Capsule Reviews … New Rating System - A “Fix" is recommended with a rating between 6 and 10! a “No Fix” with ratings of 1 to 5 isn’t. http://dailyfilmfix.com/

Dept. Q (now streaming) – l Fix Rating 8/10

– This nine-episode crime procedural comes from “The Queen’s Gambit” creator Scott Frank. It’s based on a series of Danish novels by Jussi Adler-Olsen. The show, set in Edinburgh, Scotland, stars Matthew Goode as a brilliant but emotionally unstable investigator named Carl Morck.

After surviving being shot while investigating a gruesome murder, Morck is assigned to a new division that investigates cold cases. He reluctantly assembles a motley crew, including a former Syrian police officer played by Alexej Manvelov. Things get complicated when they decide to reopen a missing person case involving the disappearance of a controversial former prosecutor. This finely acted and expertly shot corkscrew of a story is more than meets the eye, as they uncover a disturbing conspiracy.

Wednesday (season 2 premiere August 6) – Jenna Ortega returns as the title character in this Tim Burton-created series spinoff of the “The Addams Family” classic television show. This new season follows up with eight episodes broken into two parts (part 2 premieres on September 3). The trailers tease a story that kicks off with Wednesday getting a scary

vision that her roommate, Enid (Emma Myers), will die. Of course, Wednesday decides to save her or “die trying.”

Chief of War (now streaming) – In this 18th-century set series, Jason Momoa plays Ka’iana, an ali’i (chief) from Hawaii who is forced to become a warrior. This narrative focuses on the story from the perspective of the indigenous people who battle internal strife and Western colonizers. “Chief of War” is a passion project for Momoa and his co-creator Thomas Pa’a Sibbett.

Peacemaker (season 2 premiere August 21) –With the success of James Gunn’s “Superman,” “Peacemaker” gets a fresh update with its second season. Note that the character of Peacemaker (played perfectly by John Cena) got a cameo in “Superman” in a funny blink and you’ll miss it moment. Season 2’s eight weekly released episodes will be consistent with Gunn’s DC universe reboot by having Peacemaker butt heads with Rick Flag, Sr. (Frank Grillo), the father of the character killed

by Peacemaker in Gunn’s 2021 film “The Suicide Squad.”

Borderline (premieres on August 1) – This dark comedy thriller stars Samara Weaving and is written by “Cocaine Bear” screenwriter Jimmy Warden, who makes his directorial debut here. The story is set in the 1990s. Weaving plays a pop star named Sofia, whose life changes dramatically when a delusional fan named Paul (Ray Nicholson) breaks into her isolated desert home to convince her to marry him. The absurd story is said to blend satirical elements with suspense as Warden explores the depths and dangers associated with fame and obsession.

King of the Hill (season 14 now streaming) – After a fifteen-year hiatus, the Hills return to Arlen, Texas, to discover that things have changed since their time working in Saudi Arabia. Bobby is now 21 years old and a chef who combines German and Japanese food while maturing into a fully formed adult. The principal voice cast returns with creator Mike Judge as Hank, Kathy Najimy as his wife, Peggy, and Pamela Adlon voicing Bobby. Count me in for more “King of the Hill” suburban humor that promises subtle sweetness as Hank and Peggy adjust to Bobby’s independence and their new reality in the Lone Star State.

The Monkey (movie premieres August 7) – l Fix Rating 6/10 – “The Monkey” isn’t one of the best King films. However, the wacky, absurd approach by

“Longlegs” director Osgood Perkins has an energy that might infect the cool kids with King nostalgia. The comic gore on display in this film easily fills huge vats with sinewy body parts and buckets of blood. Perkins’ unapologetically violent sequences are masterfully mounted and comedically effective, even if his narrative loses its way by the film’s middle section.

The story follows the misadventures of twins Hal and Bill (played young by Christian Convery and as an adult by Theo James) and their experiences with a wind-up organ-grinding monkey. Please don’t call it a toy, as terrible things happen when the key on the Monkey is turned.

Eyes of Wakanda (now streaming) – and Iron Man and His Awesome Friends (series premiere August 11) – As the MCU moves to a new phase in the wake of the relative success of recently released “The Fantastic Four,” these animated limited series might borrow from the movies but will likely stand alone in the franchise. “Eyes of Wakanda” is a fourpart anthology that follows Wakandan warriors who travel to different times to reclaim Vibranium artifacts. The younger-skewing preschool series “Marvel’s Iron Man and His Awesome Friends” concentrates on a younger Tony Stark, “Ironheart’s” Riki Williams, and Iron Hulk Amadeus Cho, who create suits of “iron” to protect their cities.

Notes from Perry Street

Lesson 37 from ‘You Know You Are Becoming Your Dad When …’

You get on this whole serious discussion about the dishwasher and the proper loading of said device.

With four boys, my dad was constantly informing us “you will help your mother.” A lot of that had to do with cleaning up the dishes, as well as the pots and pans. This was back in the days before Teflon® (insert trademark here so lawyers don’t write letters) coating was on pots and pans.

In other words, those old SOS® pads (insert trademark here …) were what we used. Oh, and “scouring pads.” I also remember needing a lot of “elbow grease.”

Kids have it so easy today. Basically spit on the super no-stick whatever material and wipe it down with a paper towel.

Part of cleaning as you go was putting things away after cleaning them or if needed, into the dishwasher. There are distinct rules about loading dishwashers. One does not put in large pots and pans, those are for the aforementioned “elbow grease” method.

And, gawd forbid, putting drinking cups on the bottom rack goes beyond any form of common sense. Doing so means the water from the bottom sprayers will hit the cups and go no farther.

And let’s make sure we are all on the same page about putting utensils together in their little compartments. Knives with knives, forks with forks and so on. Dad was adamant that forks and spoons face up - eating side up - and handles went in first because - you could fit more in the compartment. He relented on knives and we were allowed to put the sharp blade down so we would not stab ourselves.

Let’s face it, you can tell a lot about someone’s personality just by looking inside their dishwasher. And right about now one spouse is looking at the other and going … “see, even Winters knows.”

We have three boys, most know them as the SONS of Thunder, for various and obvious reasons.

The Eldest is a Captain in the U.S. Army. His dishwasher is in perfect alignment. Neat rows of dinner plates, another for smaller plates. There are specific spots for bowls, cups and glasses. Everything is in order.

Middle is pretty much the polar opposite of his older sibling and having everything in order is just not on his radar. He has other interests and can walk by the bag of garbage by the front door multiple times without even considering it might need to go out to the trash can. Pots, pans, cups on the bottom row, he doesn’t really see the issue. And rinsing off beforehand? That would be a “no.”

Youngest is the carefree, Bob Marley “everything is gonna be alright” one. He is the calming influence and just takes everything in stride. He looks at the dishwater, everything that needs to go in and just figures out how to make it all fit. Won’t be perfect, but that really doesn’t matter, because everything is gonna be alright. He at least does not put pots in the dishwasher.

And then there is Mom, the Little Black Dress.

And If you think I am going there … not happening.

with Susan Crutchfield, Newnan Carnegie Library

It was another amazing summer at the Carnegie Library! We welcomed thousands of people through our doors for so many fun events and programs. We love serving our community!

We also have some amazing fall programs coming up for children, adults and teens! Some of the programs on the horizon are Family Open Art, Bingo, Teen Self-Care, writing workshops, author visits, screening of Murder in Coweta County, Armchair Travelers-Scotland, Self Portrait Paper Collages, screening Jane Austen films, Intro to Photography and so, so much more. You can always check out our schedule at newnancarnegie.com/ calendar for more information.

I want to leave you with some recommendations to check out this fall.

The Enchanted Greenhouse by Sarah Beth Durst— This book was set in the same universe as the author’s first book Spellshop, which I also highly recommend. This was a cozy fantasy book. I enjoyed it so much. The book features disgraced librarian, Terlu Perna. She broke the law by creating a living and talking plant and is turned into a statue. She doesn’t know who has woken her up but she ends up at a mysterious greenhouse and finds a new purpose in life. The greenhouse was so magical and I loved how it just went on forever. It was like another character in the book. This one was perfect to read with a cup of tea!

6:40 to Montreal by Eva Jurczyk— This was a fantastic thriller. I will always love a murder mystery train! It reminds me of when I first started reading Agatha Christie books. In a nod to the queen of mysteries our main character’s name is Agatha. She is gifted a trip on the train to Montreal by her husband. The reason for the train trip is for her to work on the book she is writing with no outside distractions. This one was especially thrilling and the ending was just horrifyingly delightful.

The Three Lives of Cate Kay by Kate Fagan—This was a really interesting fiction read about an author of a bestselling book trilogy that became a movie series. The author of the series, Cate Kay, is a mysterious figure who is never seen in public. It turns out that Cate Kay doesn’t really exist. Who is the author of these books and why is she hiding her identity? This book was written from multiple points of view, so I feel like we were able to get a really good look into this story from so many people. I listened to this one on audio and it was excellent.

The Ghostwriter by Julie Clark—This thriller and family drama kept me flipping the pages to find out what was going on! Olivia is a disgraced ghostwriter because she dared to call out a horrible male ghostwriter on social media. Her estranged father, a famous horror writer, contracts her to ghostwrite his next book. Through this project family secrets that have been long buried are revealed. This was an excellent thriller that I consumed in one day.

We hope to see you at the Carnegie soon!

Susan Crutchfield is the director of the Carnegie Library in Historic Downtown Newnan. She also is a professional photographer and enjoys volunteering with the Newnan ArtRez and the Newnan Theatre Company. 

Gray Skies, Bright Hearts: A Rainy Hamptons Day for Glioblastoma

I really want to start this off “I don’t always travel to luxurious destinations to attend fabulous fundraisers, but when I do… “ but that would be a lie—because we all know that’s exactly what I do and what my intentions are. I live for a fancy gala and an exotic locale. Some might say I’m a socialite of the world. Actually no one says that, but I thought if I gave

y’all a nudge, it might catch on.

So here we are in the summer, and naturally, you can find me in the Hamptons, mocktail in hand, surrounded by a sea of sun hats, monogrammed towels, and meaningful causes. This time, it was the Summer Soiree for Gray for Glioblastoma, a beautiful event supporting glioblastoma research— and one that hit especially close to home for me as

a cancer survivor.

Now, let’s talk swag. Just as you can absolutely judge a book by its cover, a stellar soiree can and will be judged for its level of swaginess. I knew I was in for a good time when I spotted the monogram machine cranking out custom beach towels like it was Fashion Week for terry cloth. Add in personalized luggage tags (which now live on my most impractical but cutest

Please tell them you saw their ad here!

carry-on), and it was clear this wasn’t your average benefit. Yes, it poured rain all day. Yes, my hair gave up around 6 p.m. But when you’re slurping oysters under a canopy, sipping bubbly, and wiping caviar off your chin with something that literally has your name on it, the weather just becomes…ambiance. But beyond the lovely touches and decadent bites, what really stood out was the heart of the event. Glioblastoma is a devastating diagnosis, and the community gathered that day was there not just to raise money, but to lift each other up. As someone who’s been through the ringer with cancer, it meant a lot to witness hope and humor living side-by-side. Rain or shine, this summer soiree proved that gray doesn’t mean gloomy—it means strength, solidarity, and a damn good beach towel.

The Featured Joint

Everyone has their “go-to” place to eat. It might be with linen tablecloths and waiters in ties, or where you throw peanuts on the floor and carve your initials in the wooden tables. Whatever and wherever, it’s your “joint.” This month’s featured joint is …

Sharpsburg Pizza & Pub

We are always looking for a good slice of pizza, maybe some wings and a cold brew to wash it all down with.

And this joint gets the prize for best descriptive name - Sharpsburg Pizza and Pub - because it is in Sharpsburg and serves pizza and beer. And why yes, you can belly up to the bar/pub.

According to the Little Black Dress, their salads are great. We did not get to try them on the last visit, but lots of raves on their smoked wings - jumbo wings no less. And they have a Pub Club, where you can get a buck off a domestic draft for an entire year.

Some

pizza perspicacity from the Internet.

“Do good. Be nice. Order pizza. Repeat.”
“A pizza slice a day keeps sadness away.” – Jet Paacal
“Beauty comes in all shapes and sizes: small, large, circle, square, thin crust, thick crust, stuffed crust, extra toppings.”

But let’s talk pizza. It is seriously good. The kind of pizza where you finish, get in your car, look at the other person and go, “damn, that was good pizza.” It has someting to do with the cheese.

Four sizes ranging from 10 to 18 inches. A vegan friendly red sauce; a white sauce (white sauces are amazing btw); olive oil; or pesto. Hand-tossed, thin or cauliflower (only in the 10-inch, thank goodness. Just not ready for that jump from bread to vegetable crusts yet.)

Hot and cold sandwiches, strombolis and calzones, and pepperoni balls and other assorted appetizers round out the menu.

Family and pet-friendly. Great for lunch, dinner or take-out.

August 7-10, 14-17, & 21-24, The outspoken Lizzy Bennet is determined never to marry, despite mounting pressure from society. The Interview with Jamar Joiner

Briefly describe yourself and what you do/did.

I’m Jamar Joiner, executive director of Bridging The Gap (BTG) Community Outreach. Originally from New Orleans, I’ve called Newnan home for the past 18 years. I lead a passionate team working to feed, serve, and restore our neighbors across Coweta County and surrounding areas. My days range from lifting food boxes and meeting with families to strategizing growth and engaging community partners — all in service of the mission to meet people where they are and walk with them toward stability.

Best piece of advice you’ve received.

“Don’t let anyone steal your joy.” Life will test you, but protecting your peace and joy is one of the most powerful things you can do. If I had it to do over …

I would’ve believed in myself sooner and trusted that the space I was meant to lead in already had my name on it.

You are going on an extended solo trip. What three albums and three books would you take?

Albums:

The Best of Sam Cooke Escape – Journey

Traveller – Chris Stapleton Books:

He Speaks to Me by Priscilla Shirer – a powerful reflection on hearing God’s voice

D’Angelo’s Voodoo by Faith A. Pennick – an R&B deep dive that blends music and culture

Empire of Sin by Gary Krist – a rich and raw look into the real New Orleans

Tell us one thing about yourself that few people know.

I enjoy baking — it’s therapeutic for me. There’s something peaceful about creating something from scratch and sharing it with the people I care about.

You are hosting a dinner party for six. What five people, living or dead, would you invite and why.

John Legend – for his creativity, advocacy, and perspective

Sam Cooke – for his unmatched voice and the soul he brought to the civil rights movement

C.S. Lewis – to explore deep topics of faith and humanity

Langston Hughes – to hear him recite poetry and speak truth to power

Frederick Douglass – for his courage, intellect, and ability to move nations with words

Name an as yet unfulfilled dream.

To build a multi-acre resource campus that offers food, housing assistance, mentorship, mental health care, and workforce development — all in one location. A place where families can truly rebuild.

If you weren’t doing what you are, you would be …

Mentoring young men — coaching, guiding, and walking with them through life. That’s still a big part of my purpose.

Your go-to food.

Chinese takeout — give me sesame chicken, fried rice, and egg rolls and I’m good.

Favorite movie(s).

The entire Fast & Furious series — but Fast Five is the ultimate favorite. It had the perfect mix of action, family, and legacy.

Dogs or cats?

Dogs — specifically American Bulldogs. Loyal, strong, and full of personality.

Your favorite quote and why.

“Service is the rent we pay for the privilege of living on this earth.” – Shirley Chisholm

It grounds me. We’re not here just to exist — we’re here to serve.

Name something that you are extremely glad you did or accomplished.

Stepping into leadership at BTG. It was a leap of faith that aligned with my purpose and gave me the chance to impact lives daily.

What advice would you give your younger self just starting out on their own.

You don’t have to prove your worth — just walk in it. Everything that feels like a delay is really just preparation. Keep showing up.

Piedmont NEWNAN

Piedmont Newnan Nationally Recognized for High-Quality Diabetes and Stroke Care

Piedmont Newnan has received three achievement awards from the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association for demonstrating commitment to following the latest research-based guidelines for the treatment of stroke and diabetes, ultimately leading to more lives saved, shorter recovery times and fewer hospital readmissions. Overall, Piedmont received 47 awards across its 25-hospital system.

This year, Piedmont Newnan received the following achievement awards:

 Get With The Guidelines®-Stroke Gold Plus Award

Target: Stroke Honor Roll Elite

Target: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll

Additionally, Piedmont Newnan continues to be designated as a Primary Stroke Center, meeting specific scientific guidelines featuring a comprehensive system for rapid diagnosis and treatment of stroke patients admitted to the emergency department.

“Piedmont Newnan is honored to be recognized for our dedication to helping stroke patients have the best possible chance of survival and quality of life,” said Stroke Program Manager Maria Wills, MSN, RN. “Every 40 seconds, someone in the U.S. has a stroke, and it is the fifth leading cause of death and a leading cause of adult disability in the U.S.”

A stroke occurs when a blood vessel that carries oxygen and nutrients to the brain is either blocked by a clot or bursts. When that happens, part of the brain cannot get the blood and oxygen it needs, so brain cells die.

It’s important to “BE FAST” as early detection and treatment are key to improving survival, minimizing disability and speeding up recovery time:

 B: Balance— watch for dizziness or loss of balance

 E: Eyes— check for vision loss or double vision

 F: Face— look for an uneven smile

 A: Arm— check if one arm is weak

 S: Speech— listen for slurred speech

 T: Time— call 911 at the first sign of a stoke

Get With The Guidelines put the expertise of the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association to work for hospitals nationwide, helping ensure patient care is aligned with the latest evidence and research-based guidelines. As a participant in both programs, Piedmont qualified for the awards by demonstrating how the organization has committed to improving quality care. Studies show patients can recover better when providers consistently follow treatment guidelines.

Prepare Your Child for a Healthy Start to the School Year

The new school year is in session and now is the time to start preparing for a successful and healthy year ahead.

“It’s a good time of year for getting kids physically and emotionally ready for the next school year: reviewing their health, academic record, their emotional health, making sure their routine health is up-to-date, including their vaccines and physicals,” said Jamison Roberts, M.D., Piedmont Physicians Pediatrics at Fischer Marketplace.

Whether your child is heading to kindergarten or high school, Dr. Roberts offers tips for you to help make sure your child has a healthy school year ahead:

Limit backpack weight

Children should not be carrying a heavy load as heavy backpacks can stunt a child’s growing body. Backpacks with two padded straps are recommended, and its contents should not weigh more than 15% of your child’s weight. Remember to use both straps so the weight is evenly distributed.

Sleep schedule

As the school year approaches, children should gradually ease into an earlier sleep schedule and wake-up time. In general, pediatricians recommend between nine and 12 hours of sleep each night for ages 6 to 12 years old, and teens need eight to 10 hours of sleep.

Healthy eating

Students who get proper nutrition are more attentive. It is best to avoid foods with added sugars. For breakfast, whole-grain breads, oatmeal, yogurt, cottage cheese, and fruit are a great way to start the day. A well-balanced lunch and dinner should include protein, whole grains, fruit and vegetables.

Try to avoid offering the same types of food to your child to keep them interested in a variety of healthy options.

Keep hands clean

Illnesses and sickness can be spread through the transfer of germs. Washing your hands is one of the best ways to get rid of germs that could make you sick. Make sure to wash your hands with warm water for at least 20 seconds.

Sports physical

Sports teams, and often band groups, require a sports physical for participation as a proactive approach to identifying students who may be at higher risk for injuries or other health conditions.

Sports physicals can be combined during well child visits with your provider. They are also offered at our 75 Piedmont Urgent Care clinics, as well as at Piedmont QuickCare locations based on availability, to

check vitals, heart and lung health, joints, flexibility and medical history to complete any necessary forms.

Wellness check

Dr. Roberts encourages parents and guardians to make sure their child’s wellness checks and preventative visits are up-to-date (within the past year). He added that parents should also be checking in on the mental wellbeing of their child, assessing for any emotional or social situations their child may have concerns about.

“Parents should be having really good open conversations with their kids, and also not hesitating to make an appointment so we can put a good success plan in place for the child,” Dr. Roberts said.

Immunizations

Certain immunizations are also required for students before starting the new school year. Generally, some school systems will require a vaccine or boosters before starting kindergarten, before seventh grade and before 11th grade. Some colleges and universities may require updated vaccinations as well for incoming freshmen.

The immunization schedule can be found on the Georgia Department of Health website.
