REGION 2-7A CHAMPIONS: The 2024 East Coweta Indians rallied to the occasion after starting the 2-7A schedule with consecutive losses to Westlake. The team rallied back to win six of their last seven contests, taking a doubleheader sweep at Carrollton and avenging the losses to Westlake with a title-clinching victory on the road, April 18.
By CHRIS GOLTERMANN CowetaScore.comThe 2024 East Coweta Indians will never be compared to the baseball team that preceded them, even if they still found a way to repeat as Region 2-7A champions while reaching the GHSA Class 7A Sweet 16 again.
Yet while not able to match up on paper to a previous Indians team led by 10 seniors, many of which put a definite stamp on success, this year’s lineup earned their own distinct reputation, defined by grit and determination despite being the youngest lineup East Coweta has fielded so far this decade.
“One thing we can say about this group. They came to work every day,” head coach Franklin Deloach said of a 20-13 season that ended in the second round of the 7A playoffs against eventual state runner-up Grayson. “We won the program’s eleventh region championship and not a person on the planet thought we would have at the beginning of the season.”
After finishing 26-5 in 2023, this year’s Indians team already had five losses by March 4. And when the 2-7A schedule began later that month, the Indians immediately sat at 0-2 following consecutive losses to Westlake.
Six games later, East Coweta returned to Westlake on April 18 and clinched the program’s second straight region title while leading from start to finish in a 5-3 victory.
“Trying to replace 10 seniors, we knew it was going to be quite a challenge,” Deloach said. “One thing we can say about this group.
They came to work every day. We had a lot of moving parts and those parts continued to move. It took us a minute to get there, but we got there.”
When they did, the Indians were playing a vastly superior brand of baseball to the one that began the year in mid-February. On the cusp of dropping their finale against 2-7A Campbell at home on March 29, the team capped off a sweep with an 8-7 comeback win after scoring six times in the bottom of the sixth inning.
A loss would have eliminated the Indians from contending for the region title before their final 2-7A series with Carrollton. And despite dropping a tough 5-4 decision at home to the Trojans and ace John Cobb in the opener, the team responded by sweeping a road doubleheader on April 12 during arguably the biggest day of the year.
Four consecutive hits opened the top of the eighth inning of the final contest in Carrollton, breaking open a 2-2 deadlock while allowing senior Dylan Nemeth to wrap up a 7-2 victory in relief and take full control of their destiny in the region.
Nemeth and ace Evan Doss were among a trio of seniors comprising the Indians’ Class of 2024. Both added their names to school record books, including Nemeth recording four saves, tying one mark, and Doss adding two more distinctions.
Doss, who earned 2-7A Pitcher of the Year honors, led the pitching staff in every major category except for saves, where he had already set school records during his first three
seasons on the varsity.
His six walks were the fewest for any East Coweta pitcher who recorded over 50 innings in a single season. Doss did it in 76 2/3 stanzas, equally the third highest in school history, capped off by a nine-plus inning stretch where he held Grayson scoreless.
Doss also led the Indians offensively in OPS (1.045), slugging (.577), hits (34), doubles (7), and homers (5) among 12 offensive categories in which he was among the top-five.
Doss, Nemeth and senior Reece Davis were honored on the All-Region 2-7A Team, with Nemeth among four first-team selections and Davis adding an honorable mention. The trio earned five of the six decisions in region play while combining for two-thirds of innings pitched.
After graduating aces Jansen Kenty (Alabama) and Bryce Alewine (Southern Union), the staff had to rely on new faces. Sophomores Kade Corbitt and Logan Wynn were region starters, while juniors Will Davey, Derrick Hand, Dylan Soutter, and Austin Ellis added depth.
A starting outfield was rebuilt from scratch and netted three All-Region selections led by freshman center-fielder Hunter Bedenbaugh. In his varsity debut, Bedenbaugh led the Indians with a .381 average while also among the top five offensively in 11 categories, including second in on-base percentage (.506) while a threat in the No. 9 spot in the order.

The final season of JV head coach Roc Coleman’s 20-plus years with East Coweta’s baseball program was as much a feather in his cap during a year when both the varsity and ninth grade were going through their own transitions.
The original roster of 18 players included three who spent all their 2024 seasons on the varsity, which was tasked with replacing 10 graduating players.
It left the JV program equally starting from scratch.
Yet the result was a group of eight freshmen and seven sophomores combining for a 13-4-1 campaign in which the team batted .301 and posted a 2.26 ERA.
Despite the constant flux, the Indians started and closed the spring on high notes, winning six straight games to open the year and then winning six of their final eight contests.
Three of four losses were by two or fewer runs.
Four freshmen who also spent the entire year dressing for varsity saw as much JV action as allowable. At the same time, each batted over .300. They included Hunter Bedenbaugh, who was limited to 15 at-bats after almost immediately moving into a starting position for the varsity in center field.
Two more eventual starters on the varsity, catcher Jakob Gonzalez and infielder Jax Bowles, finished among the top three JV performers in batting average.
Gonzalez, who also pitched and played infield on the JV, led the Indians with a .419 average, .591 on-base percentage, and .613 slugging percentage, along with an OPS of 1.204. His 14 runs and eight walks also led the team while adding three doubles and a homer among 13 hits.
Bowles batted .349, tying for the team lead in hits with 15. He was also among the top-five performers in OPS (.788), slugging percentage (.395), doubles (2), RBIs (10) and runs scored (10).
Bowles also led the Indians with an impressive 58.82 percent among quality at-bats.
Despite being limited to less than a handful of varsity at-bats, freshman Aydan Andrade took full advantage of ample playing time on JV where most of this year’s varsity starters were forced to play in 2023.
Andrade was a two-way standout at the
Freshman Jakob Gonzalez faced double duty while starting for both the JV and varsity Indans in 2024. He led the JV with a .419 batting average.
plate and on the mound. Offensively, he was among the top five performers in batting average (.310), on-base percentage (.487) and OPS (.832). Over 14 innings pitched, the southpaw recorded two wins and struck out 13 batters.
With Bedenbaugh, a projected JV shortstop, moving to the outfield on varsity, sophomore Terry Tyler stepped up while playing most games at the position.
Along with Andrade, sophomore Aiden Lynd helped man both corner infield positions. Lynd recorded 13 hits that included two doubles. His splits included a .439 on-base percentage and a .772 OPS. He tied for the team lead in walks with eight and was also plunked four times.
Lynd added a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage in the field.
Freshman Adam Liverman also platooned at third base when not on the mound. His 17 innings ranked second among pitchers while tying for the team lead in victories with four and leading the Indians with 29 strikeouts.
Four pitchers finished with 14 or more innings, led by sophomore Carter Kinley’s 25 2/3. Kinley also added four victories to go with a team-best 1.09 ERA. He added 22 strikeouts.
Pitching leaders for the Indians also included sophomores Ayden Tyler and Aiden Chester. Tyler struck out 20 batters with a 2.44 ERA over 14 1/3 innings. Chester had 11 strikeouts and a 1.68 ERA over 8 1/3 innings.
Chester also saw action among a deep group of outfielders while finishing second on
the team with 12 runs scored.
Freshman outfielder Garrett Dingler batted .375 with team highs of 15 hits, five doubles, a homer and 14 RBIs. He was also among the top five in on-base percentage (.451), OPS (1.026) and slugging percentage (.575).
Starters in the outfield also included freshman Isaiah Alford, who finished second among quality at-bats (50%) and third in fielding percentage (.952). He recorded eight hits, including two doubles, while scoring nine times.
Sophomore Hagan Clifton shared time in the outfield and at catcher, finishing in the top five of seven offensive categories while leading the Indians in total defensive chances with 90 to go with a .978 fielding percentage.
Clifton batted .333 while third among players in on-base percentage (.458) and OPS (.843). He also recorded 13 hits, including the team’s only triple. Clifton also finished with nine RBIs, six walks and was hit three times.
Also handling catching duties was sophomore Dillon Hudson, who was among the top five in on-base percentage (.455), RBIs (10), fielding percentage (.923) and total defensive chances (39).
Coleman, who now moves into an administrative role at East Coweta High as an assistant principal, led his final two JV squads to a combined record of 26-11-2. Eleven JV players from 2023 moved on to play for the varsity this spring.

How do you follow up a 16win season?
How about 16 more wins?
East Coweta’s ninth-grade team dominated their competition, further improving on the previous year’s .800 win percentage. Under head coach Matt East, the team finished 16-1-1 and took an unbeaten record into the final day of the 2024 season. It was the third consecutive year that the Indians’ freshman lineup won at least 14 games, again with a majority of newcomers among a roster that included two returning players.
The Indians used a team effort to outscore opponents 130-62 while recording five shutouts. The last helped avenge the only loss of the year to Whitewater, closing the year with a doubleheader split against the Wildcats.
A roster of 12 freshmen and seven eighth graders combined to post a .314 team batting average and an ERA of 2.70. Just as impressive as a 16-game unbeaten streak to begin the year, this year’s ninth-grade team won five games by one or two runs.
The team opened the season with a walk-off over Starr’s Mill after rallying from a 4-3 deficit. Game two followed a similar pattern, with the Indians storming back from an early 4-2 deficit to beat Whitewater 8-6.
A never-say-die attitude stuck, with the team’s unbeaten stretch also being tested on March 16 in Game 1 of a home doubleheader against Pike County. Despite seeing an early 3-0 lead evaporate, the Indians rallied for another walk-off victory on freshman outfielder Chase Simmons’ game-winning RBI double that was among his 12 hits this season.
Simmons was part of a balanced offensive attack among six Indians that recorded 10 or more hits.
Chase Simmons helped the Indians stay unbeaten on March 16 with a walk-off double in Game 1 against Pike County.
He also finished in the topfive in batting average (.343), on-base percentage (.500), OPS (.929), slugging (.429) doubles (3), RBIs (9), runs scored (13), walks (10) and stolen bases (11).
Freshman Kaden Gardner led offensive standouts. An outstanding debut saw Gardner lead the team in five major offensive categories, including a. 576 batting average. He also posted impressive numbers that included a .689 on-base percentage, a 1.477 OPS, and a .788 slugging percentage.
In addition, he recorded team highs in hits (19), doubles (3), triples (2) and runs scored (17) and stolen bases, tying with returning freshman center-fielder
A.J. Gates with 19 apiece.
Gates added leadership as a constant offensive threat in the No. 3 hole, finishing in the top five among on-base percentage (.500), hits (11), doubles (2), RBIs (10), runs scored (12), walks (12) and hit batsmen (6).
He was also perfect in the field among 22 chances.
Versatility was also an asset for East, which used no fewer than three players at every position during the season. At least five Indians, including freshmen first basemen Andrio Perez, Royal Maxwell, and Lane Ryals, were capable of playing the
corner infield spots.
Maxwell was among the topfive in slugging (.429) and Perez was second on the team among quality at-bats with a percentage of 53.33. Ryals’ .957 fielding percentage ranked fifth among Indians.
Internal competition paid dividends among five players, including Gardner, who finished with batting averages over .340.
Eighth-grader Cam Corbitt made an impressive debut of his own as a two-way asset. He batted .405 and was among the top five offensively in OPS (.936), slugging (.486), hits (15), doubles (3) and RBIs (8).
Corbitt equally led East Coweta on the mound in innings pitched (18), WHIP (1.17), wins (4) and saves (2) while posting a 1.94 ERA. He was in the top five in six major categories, including strikeouts (23).
Offensive leaders in batting average also included pitcher Hudson Harrison (.379), who joined Corbitt among key contributors at the plate and on the mound.
In addition to finishing in the top-five offensively in on-base percentage (.526), OPS (1.009), hits (12), doubles (3), RBIs (9), runs scored (13), walks (10) and hit batsmen (4), Harrison posted a team-best 0.93 ERA
while matching Corbitt’s four wins over 15 innings. He also recorded a save and had a WHIP of 1.20.
Pitchers Reginald Sims and Garrett Grantham also won multiple games for the Indians on the mound. Sims recorded a team-high 27 strikeouts over 17 1/3 innings, winning three games and posting a 2.02 ERA.
Grantham added 17 innings of work and a 1.24 ERA with two victories and a save, striking out 15 batters.
Ryan Rogers, Zeb Jenkins and Carter Tchantz also recorded victories for East Coweta’s pitching staff. Standouts included Caleb Harris, who posted a 1.57 ERA over seven innings with eight strikeouts.
Jenkins had 17 strikeouts in 11 2/3 innings, ranking among the top five in both categories.
The depth on the field featured seven eighth graders who also contributed immediately.
Robert East batted .346 while playing both middle infield positions. He was among the top five in on-base percentage (.575), OPS (.960), RBIs (8), runs scored (13) and fielding percentage (.967). East also led the Indians with six hit-by-pitches and four sacrifices.
Tristan Gopie also held down second base and appeared at first and catcher. He led the team with 12 RBIs and 13 walks while recording 10 hits.
Gopie and outfielder Baylor Rumsey were among the eighthgraders with a perfect fielding percentage. Rumsey made three highlight-worthy catches alone in Game 1 of the team’s sweep of Pike County on March 16.
The incoming eighth-grade class also featured catcher Ben Thrailkill, who recorded a .947 fielding percentage among a team-high 76 chances. Tristan Lee earned playing time in the infield and outfield, posting a team-best rating of 53.57-percent among quality at-bats.

What began as a constant rotation among corner outfielders ended with sophomore Lathan Gibby and junior Avery Butts seeing the most action in left and right field, respectively. Both were named to the 2-7A Second Team, as Gibby was among the top five in OBP (.405), doubles (3), RBIs (21), walks (20) and stolen bases (5).
A late surge saw Butts bat .333 during region play with a 1.057 OPS. Three of his six doubles were against 2-7A teams while also finishing in the top five in OPS and slugging percentage.
Juniors Logan Bence, Gavin Lee and Koen Eschman all appeared in at least 23 games among outfielders in their varsity debuts. Catcher also posed a significant vacancy
heading into 2024, with the Indians turning to an effort by committee to fill a hole left by Hayden Blair.
Juniors Aaron Abke and C.J. Rivera joined freshman Jakob Gonzalez and Doss while handling the load.
Rivera, meanwhile, was among East Coweta’s greatest strengths heading into 2024 at third base among three returning starters in the infield with junior shortstop Chance Izzo and Doss.
Named to the All-Region Second Team, Rivera finished among the top five in average (.272), slugging (.340), hits (28), doubles (3), triples (2) and RBIs (18). He also posted a .952 fielding percentage among 126 chances.
Junior Carson Kish, who had stepped in at second when Doss was on the mound, also
showcased his defensive abilities at third when Rivera was behind the plate. He posted a .966 fielding percentage for the year while named an All-Region honorable mention.
Junior Conor Goltermann filled another sizable vacancy at first base while thrust into the cleanup spot in his first season as a starter. He responded by finishing in the top five of 12 offensive categories en route to earning AllRegion First Team honors.
Behind a 27-game on-base streak, Goltermann led the Indians in on-base percentage (.533), doubles (7), RBI (29), walks (27), hit by pitch (12) and quality at-bats (49.18%). He also posted a .986 fielding percentage playing both corner infield positions and facing a team-high 148 chances.
“Seven innings to play, a lifetime to remember.”
