LITTLE RIVER FRIESIANS (LRF), OF Havana, FL, announces its multiple World Champion gelding, Co Fan S, has been named the 2016 USEF Friesian Horse of the Year, 2016 USEF Grand Champion Friesian, and 2016 IFSHA High Point Purebred Friesian! The nine-year-old gelding was awarded the title after competing and winning at multiple events, in Friesian Hunt, Junior Exhibitor, and Dressage at the Grand Champion International Friesian Show North America. LRF is also pleased to announce that three-year-old mare, Valiant, showed at her first show this year at Lexington Spring Dressage and scored very well. She placed first in 3 Year Old Mares and earned Champion Filly and Young Horse Reserve Champion. She showed in front of one of the top dressage judges and was well liked by her. The comments were very nice and included that she was very athletic.

the finest KFPS and FHANA mares in the world, specializing in producing beautiful Friesians with superior bloodlines, conformation, beauty, good intellects, and friendly personalities. Home to four world champion Model mares out of approximately 30 existing Model mares worldwide, the facility is located on the 4,000-acre Little River Plantation (LRP).

“More than 10 years ago, we had acquired what was a quail hunting lodge, but didn’t hunt quail. Instead we quickly assembled more acreage and started with Quarter Horses,” begins Constance Fernandez, “then we added the cattle, donkeys, mules, and chickens (for LRP fresh eggs), at which time we discovered the magnificent Friesians.

While my husband had always adored these regal horses, he had never owned one.

The first Friesian to come to our ranch was Crusader, a wonderful 18-hand gelding with an extensive show record. He is a gentle giant and quite talented. He is now retired as Mike’s riding horse; yet the ride of a

lifetime and the best saddle for me is to ride Crusader bareback. At the same time as Crusader came Gerrie Van De Marne, a beautiful smaller mare that anyone can ride, including our granddaughters Stella and Daniella. So that was the beginning of the love affair with the Friesians. The breed is magnificent! They are intelligent, have an excellent work ethic, and a wonderful temperament. We then went to Holland, acquired four of the best Model mares in the world and built the breeding operation from there. This has been a beautiful journey for me,” states Constance.

“Little River Friesians encompasses two barns, a covered riding arena with an observation lounge, a 60-foot round pen, with 50 acres of pastures and paddocks and miles of scenic trails winding throughout the Little River Plantation. In addition to the Friesians, the ranch also maintains an Andalusian mare, Celina, who was sired with (the late) Wander 360, via artificial insemination (frozen semen) to produce a Warlander

foal in February or March 2018. Additionally, LRF enjoys their seven Quarter Horses, including palominos and Paint pony, Anabelle.

“LRF Equine Director, Tod Roettiger, and his team Lilli, Zack, Ashley, and Chelsea, spoil these horses within a country club setting and also begin their training once of age and maturity to do so,” says Constance. “We proudly house a herd of (23) majestic, intelligent, and extremely friendly Friesians. “All bred mares remain on the ranch for the full terms of their pregnancy and are then transported three hours to the University of Florida (UF) in Gainesville for foaling. We have a great relationship with UF and feel lucky to have their expertise and care so close. Dr. Carlos Risco, DVM, Chair and Professor of UF Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences, and his equine veterinarians take over and we have had great success. The foals are imprinted at birth and return to our ranch within days. Mare and foal remain together until weaning and are pastured together with other mares with foals to socialize. The foals are then placed together in a foal group, playing, learning, and training at their own level.

Every effort is made to keep horses, yearlings, two- and three-year-olds together who enjoy each other’s company paddocked together as they mature through their years so they remain comfortable and happy.

“With such a magnificent and friendly breed, in a beautiful and serene setting, it is hard to even consider selling any,” continues Constance, “but this is a breeding facility after all, so we are open to considering a good home for them. We welcome visitors who wish to see the horses at the ranch (by appointment). Interested parties will be screened in order to present them with those horses best suited for their needs and/or interests. Little River Friesians will work with prospective buyers to help them choose the right Friesian for their goals, from foals to finished show horses.”

STAY HYDRATED As the weather gets hotter, it becomes even more important to keep your horse hydrated while traveling to shows, events, or any destination. Researchers at the University of California at Davis conducted a study looking at the impact of 24 hours of long-distance travel on horses that were experienced travelers. They monitored horses both during transit and in the recovery period 24 hours after travel. They found that the horses lost an average of six percent of body weight, and hematocrit and total protein (used as indicators of dehydration) increased during travel. Weight loss was thought to be due to sweat loss as well as decreased gut fill. Blood work confirmed that the level of dehydration increased with time traveled. Most horses regained 50 percent of the weight lost within 24 hours of arrival at their destination.

Ensure your horses stay hydrated by providing adequate electrolytes in the days running up to travel. Make sure that the electrolyte you choose provides large enough amounts of sodium, chloride, and potassium per serving to have an impact on electrolyte status.

Rider Reminder Losing track of time is easy at the barn; so is remembering when you last ate or drank. Just like your horse needs to stay hydrated in the summer heat, so do you. Pack a water bottle (a frozen bottle will keep cold if your barn is fridgefree) and a snack to ward off any exhaustion and dehydration so you can enjoy your barn time to the fullest.

CALLED CHINCOTEAGUE PONIES, THE HORSES ACTUALLY LIVE ON ASSATEAGUE ISLAND.

» There are two herds of ponies on Assateague; one on the Maryland side and another on the Virginia side. The National Park Service manages the Maryland herd, while the Virginia herd is owned by the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company. » A permit to allow 150 adult ponies to graze on the Virginia land is granted to the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company each year, so the annual Chincoteague Pony Swim and Pony Penning is held each July to manage the growing population and fund the Company.

» The ponies are known for their hardiness and for being easy keepers because of the harsh environment of Assateague. They are typically around 13 hands tall, stocky, and because of the high salt content of the cordgrass in the marshes (the main part of the ponies’ diet), the ponies drink large amounts of water, making them appear bloated. » The Virginia herd of ponies receives vaccines and hoof care three times a year, while the Maryland herd goes untreated except for a contraceptive vaccine that is administered via a dart to selected mares. » The famous Misty of Chincoteague from Marguerite Henry’s book was a real pony that was born on July 20, 1946 at the Beebee Ranch on Chincoteague.

So You Want to Show Saddle Seat

A rider with a “Look at me!” attitude is one of the things that make a great saddle seat competitor.

I’VE ATTENDED MY FAIR SHARE OF HORSE shows as a helper or spectator. Let’s face it; the day can be long and tedious. Watching horses and riders go round and round in class after class gets to be a little like watching laundry dry. As a spectator, you’re expected to—well—spectate and keep quiet about things.

Not so with the saddle seat discipline.

Stand ringside for just a few minutes and you’ll notice that each and every rider (especially those who win) are as full of expression as their horses, and audience participation is strongly encouraged. Hooping, hollering, clapping, and whistling for your favorite competitor is half the fun. The other half is riding. If you’ve had the opportunity to watch a class or two, you’re probably wondering how to get involved. We asked Chris Cassenti, trainer, judge, and clinician of Chrislar Farm in Rowley, MA, for her professional advice.

“The Classic and Country English Pleasure classes are a great place for amateurs and novices to show their own horses,” says Cassenti. “The trend over the last five years 32

or so is for clients to show their own horses.

This is a big change from years ago when the trainers often showed horses for clients in the Open or Junior Horse classes.” Cassenti points out that many people today, either due to other time commitments, the economy, or the wish to be more actively involved, just enjoy showing their own horses.

Though the terminology differs slightly between breed organizations, the fundamentals of the division are the same. “The Saddlebred and Arabian Country Pleasure Division and the Morgan Classic Pleasure Division are the same type of classes,” explains Cassenti.

“They were established for amateur or junior exhibitor participants. They’re offered under saddle or in harness and pleasure driving. The attire for these classes is reminiscent of the days when ladies and gentlemen rode to their destinations on fancy horses in fancy attire.”

The United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) lists class specifications for each breed.

“I refer to the specifications as ‘ingredients’,” says Cassenti, “because I think of how food labels list ingredients, in order of predomi-

nance. The first and most important ingredient in a pleasure class is that the horse give the distinct appearance of being a pleasure to ride or drive with a heavy emphasis on the walk and smooth transitions. Horses that do not stand quietly or back readily are severely penalized.”

In the Morgan Classic Pleasure Division, Morgan horses are shown at the walk, pleasure trot, road trot (extended trot), and canter. Horses are judged on manners, proper cadence and gait, and breed type and conformation. “Cross entering in other divisions is permitted, providing all the requirements of each division are met,” says Cassenti.

In the American Saddlebred Country Pleasure division, horses are shown at a flat walk, trot, extended trot, and canter. They must also stand quietly on the rail and back readily in the line. They are judged on manners, performance, presence and quality, and conformation. “Manners and suitability are paramount,” says Cassenti. “Transitions from one gait to another should be smooth and effortless.”

Cross-entering is not permitted.

In the Arabian Country Pleasure division horses are also judged on attitude, manners, performance, quality, and conformation. “No matter what breed you show,” says Cassenti, “light contact must be maintained with reins at all gaits. A true flat walk should be demonstrated on a loose rein with the horse’s neck relaxed and slightly lowered. A quiet, responsive mouth is paramount.”

The saddle seat class should be a great deal of fun to watch. That’s something for competitors to keep in mind. “In my clinics at the Equine Affaire, I use Dancing with the Stars and The Voice as good analogies,” says Cassenti. “You can have a singer come out and get all the words exactly right. Maybe they hit all the right keys, but it’s the ones that look like they’re having fun, the real entertainers who engage the audience that win. Maybe they don’t have the best voice of all the competitors, maybe they made a little mistake, but if their overall performance is great, they’re likely to win. So, a saddle seat exhibitor must come into the ring with that same “Look at me!” attitude and nine times out of 10, the horse catches the rider’s enthusiasm and will have it, too. That to me, makes a great saddle seat competitor.”

ave you been eager to add jumping to your riding skills? You may just want to give it a try, or you may see yourself eventually giving cross rails a try and then ultimately find yourself cruising along a show jumping course. By the time you approach that first-ever obstacle—whether your knees are shaking or you’re full of confidence—you’ll need to have established a solid jump seat—balanced and able to follow the horse’s movement without falling backwards in the saddle and pulling on the reins.

Murphy adds, “Shorter stirrups that allow you to lift your seat from the tack enables the rider to follow their horse, and encourages the horse to comfortably work through their back over the jumps.

Shortening the reins so the hands are in front of you and not at your hip or thigh also encourages the rider to follow their horse while working over fences.”

As the students build strength and balance, Hunt suggests increasing the number of ground poles. Then it’s time to introduce a single, small cross rail—two trot poles that are set low to form an X

At first it’s a real physical workout for the rider who is just learning the jump seat, half-seat, or two-point—whichever you prefer to call it—getting up out of their saddle with weight in the heels. The feeling is markedly different from a nice, quiet trot around on the flat. Half the fun is learning how amazing it is when you can ride in pure harmony with the horse up and over the jumps in two-point, and be looking ahead to the next jump with exhilaration.

Trainers Monica Hunt of Cornerstone Farm (Haverhill, MA) and Katie Murphy of Murphy Eventing (located at Autumn Hill Farm in Epping, NH) are both accomplished riders and trainers who help their students establish solid jumping skills at all levels.

Murphy is competing in eventing at the FEI** level, and travels to USEA Area 2 most often to ride her horse in these advanced venues. She is a certified trainer with USHJA. Hunt has taken students to the winner’s circle at such venues as National Junior Hunter Finals, HITS Ocala, Saugerties, Vermont, and Capital Challenge. Cornerstone Farm is a family-owned farm started by her mother, Pam Hunt, USHJA Chairman for Zone 1.

Hunt establishes the basics by using ground poles and exercises to increase strength and balance of her riders. She says, “Good balance means weight in your heels, you’re centered over the horse with a nice soft arm, bent elbow, eyes up. Another fundamental we frequently focus on is transitions. Downward and forward transitions should be unseen, from stop, to slow, or having the horse move off of your leg.” One exercise she encourages students to use over fences is to ‘hold mane’ or grab a bit of the mane in their hands while holding the reins right at the base of the horse’s neck. “It keeps the hands close to the neck so that they don’t fall back and punish the horse by hitting it in the mouth. Following the horse’s mouth is essential.”

Murphy adds that, “As in every equine sport, balance, flexible strength, and independent aids are crucial to an effective and correct position. In preparation for jumping, build your base of support: practice shortening your stirrups to a soft angle at the knee so you may hover above the saddle with your weight settling into your ankles without pinching at the knee or balancing off the bridle. A strap around the horse’s neck is a wonderful tool for moments of imbalance so the rider does not pull on the mouth for stability.”

between two jump standards. The cross rail seems less intimidating to the beginner and helps them feel how to guide the horse to the middle of the jump. A trained horse will naturally seek the middle, or lowest point, of the jump. A second cross rail is later added to allow the rider to learn control between jumps. In the beginning, they trot in and canter out. “Everyone comes into it fast, and before you know it they’re cantering courses.” Then a very small vertical (a horizontal pole at about 12" high) is introduced. When the rider is ready, they move up to 18" and then eventually a 2' vertical. Sometimes trainers set ground poles to help the horse judge the distance better, but school horses know how to adjust without the rider telling them. Hunt keeps it simple at first and says she teaches students to count strides between the lines only as they progress.

Each jump poses a “question” to the horse and rider. How will they approach and land and make the next turn? Murphy explains that setting ground poles in front of the stadium jumps “offers the horse and rider guidance as they work toward jumping over fences, while assisting in balance, maintaining a consistent tempo, and finding the correct take-off distance. (such as white) so the questions are visually easy for the horse to assess and avoid fillers until you and your horse are confident, consistent, and relaxed throughout a small jump course. Three trot poles set

These distances may need to be adjusted depending on the horse’s stride length. As you graduate from poles to fences, start with short course work of four fences. Take a

break, and then reintroduce the questions. Keep things simple: It is helpful to slowly introduce more complex questions at lower heights, allowing you and the horse to execute more difficult questions without being over faced.

Add trot poles in the large spaces between fences, focusing on your balance and softness at the trot before your next jump.

Always take the extra time you need: soft, large circles and quality transitions will help you and your horse to learn the value of riding the entire course, not just getting to the other side of the fence.”

“As with all aspects of riding: start slow, take your time in the progression, and have fun,” says Murphy. “As you start this new skill of jumping, you and your horse will be using your muscles differently. Do not push either yourself or your horse to the point of fatigue—strength takes time to build, and tired bodies are more likely to become injured or strained. If in doubt, or if you and your horse are becoming frustrated, take a break. It is always better to think, ‘We could have done more’ than ‘I wish I hadn’t pushed for that.’”

A LOOK AT SOME OF REINING’S GREATEST HORSES

A great reining horse has exceptional conformation, extraordinary balance, and agility. But a truly great reining horse is more than the sum of those parts. A reining legend has qualities that are sometimes hard to put your finger on; we call that heart or a certain pizzazz that sets the horse apart from his competitors. the 2009 sorrel stallion son, Gunners Tinseltown, and the 2004 palomino stallion, Hollywoodstinseltown, recently inducted into the NRHA Hall of Fame as a million dollar sire.

THE CHESTNUT COLT THAT COULD; TOPSAIL WHIZ

LADIES FIRST; MISS TINSELTOWN Colleen McQuay, wife of reining great, Tim Mcquay, spotted Miss Tinseltown, a 1994 sorrel mare, at the Tradition Futurity in September of 1997. She pointed the mare out to Tim, thinking she would make a nice prospect for their friend, Dave Silva, who was already a top competitor in the sport. That proved to be some of the best advice Silva had ever received. Silva bought the mare on Colleen’s advice and left her in the capable hands of Tim McQuay.

The mare, they discovered, was “family.” She was sired by Great Red Pine, a full brother to Silva’s first talented reining horse, Great Footwork. Her dam, Miss Hollywood Showtime x Docs Showtime was a granddaughter of Hollywood Jac 86.

Miss Tinseltown went on to make Silva proud, making a NRHA lifetime earnings total of $114,087. She earned a fourth place finish at the 1997 NRHA Open Futurity, championship honors at the 1999 National Reining Breeders Classic and the reserve championship at the 1999 NRHA Derby with Hall of Fame inductee, Tim McQuay, in the saddle. As a competitor and owner, Dave Silva Sr., joined the exclusive Million Dollar Club in 2012. He credits Miss Tinseltown as being a big part of that journey.

“Miss Tinseltown, or Tina, as we call her,” says Bonnie, Silva’s wife, “is now retired and spends her days in turnout on our ranch in Pilot Point, TX. Miss Tinseltown’s success wasn’t limited to the show pen. The mare foaled nine NRHA money earners, but the two most prominent are Silva’s stallions, 44

In 1986, when Bob Loomis went looking for a mare to breed to then NRHA Futurity Champion and AQHA World Champion, Topsail Cody, he found the perfect match, Jeanie Whiz Bar, by Cee Red out of Jeanie Whiz by Billy’s Whizzer. There was only one problem; her owners wouldn’t sell the mare, but they did agree to let Loomis breed her

Topsail Whiz’s talent didn’t end in the show pen. The colt went on to become a great sire. He holds the Equi-Stat’s leading reining sire title. Among his top money earning offspring is The Great Whiz, a 2000 gelding out of Shirley’s Folly by Great Pine.

The Great Whiz was the 2003 NRHA Futurity Open Champion and the 2004 NRBC Open Reserve Champion, ridden by Duane Latimer and owned by Lance Griffin. His earnings total a whopping $273,969. Other big money earners include Easy Otie Whiz and Walla Walla Whiz, making Topsail one of the best known and loved sires in the industry. He’s sired 634 AQHA registered offspring that have earned money and/or AQHA points.

to Topsail Cody. Jeanie Whiz Bar, a 1972 sorrel Quarter Horse mare, boasted numerous AQHA honors, including 1977 high-point youth reining horse.

The end result of that breeding, of course, was Topsail Whiz in 1987.

Loomis said of the colt as a threeyear-old, “It was just evident that he was extremely special. I rode a lot of great horses in my life, but I’d never ridden anything quite like him. He was just light and feely and talented and just so easy to train it was absolutely unbelievable.”

Topsail Whiz kick-started his show career with a win at the 1990 Southwest Reining Horse Association Futurity with Loomis in the saddle. Topsail Whiz placed third in the NRHA Futurity that same year. In 1991 the pair won the NRHA Lazy E Classic and placed fourth in the NRHA Derby. Loomis says of the colt, “I’ve never rode a horse that could stop as effortless as he could or as pretty. And he puts that on every one of his babies.”

colt was small at just 14.3 hands. He was a dusty-colored palomino with a dorsal stripe, primitive markings, and signature floppy ears that earned him the nickname, Bullwinkle. But, it was in the show pen that Hollywood Jac became a celebrity.

It’s said that his “drop to the basement” style of stopping revolutionized the sport of reining and he passed this trait to his offspring generation after generation. That stop is the stamp of the Hollywood Jac family line.

He was bred by John and Mary Bowling of Summer, IA. He’s by Easter King, a son of King P-234 and out of Miss Hollywood, a Register of Merit earner in 1967. When trainer Spain Prestwich saw the colt in a pen with 30-40 other colts he saw a great reining prospect. As he stood at the pen, he watched the colt run from one end of the pen to the other, slide into the fence, roll back, and then run to the other end and slide. The colt was a natural and Prestwich bought him.

Hollywood Jac didn’t disappoint. Even on the longe line if Prestwich asked the

horse to stop, he’d drop on his hindquarters, slide to a stop, and sit on his butt. Prestwich said he’d never seen anything like it before.

Hollywood Jac earned AQHA Superior Reining Award and won the NRHA 1975 and 1975 Non-Pro World Championship titles with Richard Greenburg in the saddle. The duo also won 12 NRHA bronze trophies. As a sire, he was unbeatable; his get have won six NRHA Futurities and four NRHA Derbies. He was the first NRHA Million Dollar Sire. His celebrity sons include Hollywood Dun it— NRHA’s All Time Leading Sire—and Crome Plated Jack. His daughters are celebrities in their own right; Blonde at the Bar and Jacs Maple Sugar are two of the best.

Tim McQuay once told a story of watching Prestwich and Jac compete in a reining stake class. When Spain asked Jac to back, the horse put so much effort into the back that he lost his footing and went down. The horse had so much heart—controversial because judges would sometimes overlook those mistakes in favor of his tremendous heart. He was inducted into the NRHA Hall of Fame in 1993, two years after his death at the age of 24.

Thinking of a career in barn management?

Wondering what a typical day is like? Join us as we catch up (briefly, as there is lots to do today!) with an experienced barn manager.

It’s 5:45 a.m. when Sylvia Hadcock begins work for the day. Already up for an hour, she comes down the stairs from her apartment over the stable and begins the routine of caring for 10 horses at a 400-acre private dressage/eventing barn in New England. Sylvia works with a team of people who make the farm run like clockwork, and she is charged with overseeing all aspects of horse care. At various times throughout a day or week, she wears the hat of groom, equine nutritionist, trainer, supervisor, exercise rider, and veterinarian. Her days are long and varied. As horse owners know, days at the barn don’t always go according to plan. Put 10 horses in the equation and it’s easy to see how Sylvia’s weeks often add up to 75 hours of work, not the 40 an “average” worker puts in.

ALL IN A DAY’S WORK When pressed for a typical day’s schedule, Sylvia says the following is a rough guideline, on quiet days when horses are able to be turned out (thus not requiring additional hand walking) and none require cold hosing or veterinary care.

She says, “The day goes sort of like this, sometimes: 5:45 - hay the horses 6:45-7:00 - feed grain 7:00-8:00 - turn out 8:00-9:00 - mix grain, do laundry 9:00-10:30 - ride/longe 10:30-10:45 - put hay in stalls 10:45-12:15 - ride/longe 12:15-12:45 - laundry, catch up on odds and ends 1:00-2:30 - ride/longe 2:30-3:30 - clean tack, finish getting ready for turn-in 3:30 - turn-in 4:30 - feed grain 5:00-5:30 - wrap legs, finish laundry 5:30-7:30 - dinner break 7:30-9:00 - “night check” Phew. And that’s just the bare minimum of tasks, when there aren’t extra blankets to be washed, when nobody is out sick, and when it is not winter, mud, or fly season. If someone is out sick, their tasks still must get done. Fitting several extra hours of work into an already

packed day requires savvy scheduling.

“The pressure of being short-handed does make you think about how to be incredibly efficient. You have to prioritize for importance,” Sylvia explains.

Experience tells her when one horse can be turned out after a day in from a snowstorm but another needs to be hand-walked for a bit in order to avoid it running recklessly and injuring himself.

“Sometimes that extra eight minutes of hand-walking will save weeks of cold hosing due to an injury that could have been prevented in the first place,” she notes.

Following Sylvia through part of her work day, I see that efficiency is something she has mastered. I suggest I’d like to take a photo in the grain room.

No problem, she says, since she is going to mix grain now anyway. How about a shot of the mares in the field? Okay, and while there she needs to remove their blankets since the day has warmed up.

Could she pose with one of the horses for a portrait? Of course, she will bring in the bay, and since he’s here he needs more fly spray. Not a moment gets wasted. Yet, the pace is never chaotic. It is measured and workmanlike.

We pass a coworker who is cleaning stalls, and Sylvia suggests I take her photo, for she is an integral part of the team. “It is really hard to find good people,” Sylvia notes. It is one of the

challenging parts of her job, training people and making sure their skills are up to par. “It takes some time to assess skill level in the help. They may say they know how to do something, but until I see them do it I won’t know if they do it properly.” Sylvia knows, without good help her job would be impossible.

THE RIGHT STUFF Okay, so how does one become qualified to be a barn manager, you might be wondering. After all, those are a lot of hats to wear and skills to have, and one must be proficient in all of them to properly care for a stable full of competition horses.

“They also need an active intellect…

Keeping up with current research into equine epidemiology and nutrition is an important part of a barn manager’s job and there are plenty of portals affording efficient access without paying tuition,” she continues. “At the same time there is a lot to be learned from texts dating from the 19th and early 20th century, when the horse played such a large role in human events on every scale, from children’s pets to transportation, food production, and warfare.”

“Working in a variety of different

barns is irreplaceable for experience,” she continues. “What works beautifully in one barn can easily spell disaster in another barn. It is very helpful to have worked in a lot of different barns. It is also helpful to have had jobs that didn’t involve horses at all. In a barn, as with any job, unforeseen situations arise on a daily basis and it is important to manage one’s reactions in a way that minimizes disruptive impact on the horses.

This is learned by much practice and I think it is better to develop this ability away from horses.”

Although Sylvia has many years’ experience as a barn manager, it was not what she set out to do.

“Actually, I never planned on a career with horses to begin with, although as a little girl I wanted to live in a hayloft—and now here I am!” she quips. “I graduated from Wesleyan University in Connecticut, with High Honors in General Scholarship, and thought I was going to do something in artist management/concert production.

Wesleyan hired me to be the Events Manager at their Center for the Arts but I found out very quickly that I don’t do well at a desk at all! Then someone who knew me from my Pony Club days offered me a job at a private eventing stable and that became my first fulltime job with horses, in 1987.”

She adds, “I think my background in horses is becoming pretty unique by now, as the days of the serious competitive ‘backyard’ rider, who kept their horse at home, competed successfully, and did their own training with the help of weekly lessons, seem to be pretty much gone. I got my first pony when I was six. We kept him (along with a horse for my mom) in a barn my dad built, and I joined 4-H. In those days (early 1970s) 4-H was a serious thing, and it played a huge role in my approach to barn management. We had barn inspections; once a month, the 4-H barn inspector (a well-meaning horsey adult volunteer) would arrive unannounced and leave behind a scoresheet along with a Danish-system ribbon. Oh how I wanted to get the blue ribbon marked Excellent, for a score of 90 or above! The inspector looked at everything: the pony for health issues, the stall and tack for cleanliness and safety issues, as well as the fencing and paddock, and the records. I was

required to keep a daily record of time spent riding and time spent on chores, as well as expenses, with monthly totals at the bottom of the page. These in turn became part of an annual summary. Did I need help with some of the math? You bet. Did I have, by age eight, a clear understanding of how much time and money went into keeping my pony?

Her unique combination of skill and experience has brought Sylvia to a stage in life where her work as barn manager really is not just a job but a way of life.

“I see myself not as the barn manager, as much as I am the horses’ advocate: their optimum physical and mental well-being is my top priority, always,” Sylvia explains. “They should all be treated like champions as much as possible. Besides that, they are my closest friends and co-workers.” Certainly Sylvia’s philosophy shows in her charges: every horse is gleaming and has a content look in its eye. The barn is a sanctuary.

After observing just how consuming her job as barn manager is, I ask Sylvia what makes this level of hard work, personal sacrifice and long days worthwhile. “I like the challenge,” she says.

“I like the fact that it lets me use a lot of the skills I have. I like that there’s been continuity in my life; that things I’ve done in the past inform the things I do today.”

What is her favorite part of the day, or most rewarding time? “It’s a really good feeling at night check when the horses are munching hay and slopping in the water. I give them each a piece of carrot, turn the radio off, and turn the lights off, and that’s very satisfying.”

Given the nature of barn management, it is necessary for those in this line of work to take breaks occasionally.

“Over the years I have learned that an important part of a live-in position (I have had several) is making sure I have suitable diversions and hobbies that don’t involve horses,” Sylvia says.

“That’s where that expensive liberal arts degree comes in handy, I suppose.”

Whether it’s a day in town or catching up with friends, time off the farm recharges the soul, making it so that Sylvia, and hundreds of barn managers like her, can be all in when they get back to work.

Wash Ashore ➜ On Martha’s Vineyard

Summertime on Martha’s Vineyard is the season of washashores, or seasonal visitors to the island as local residents call them, arriving to take over this small, 20-mile-long block of land off of the coast of Massachusetts. From June to September, the Vineyard becomes bustling with tourists and vacationers returning to their summer homes to soak up the sun and escape the mainland.

With the entirety of Martha’s Vineyard open for the summer season after a quiet winter, there is plenty to do in the small island’s towns, but any horse enthusiast will love the scenic equestrian facilities that offer riding camps, pony rides, trail rides, and lessons. Arrowhead Farm, Red Pony Farm, and Pond View Farm are all located in West Tisbury and offer just some of the island’s equine attractions.

Shopaholics should head to Edgartown on the eastern side of the Vineyard for their share of splurging. Main Street is lined with local shops and restaurants and is right on the route of the island’s annual Fourth of July Parade. Pop into Behind the Bookstore for an amazing breakfast sandwich or reserve a patio table at a restaurant to watch the parade go by. Oak Bluffs also offers a selection of shops and places to grab a meal—it wouldn’t be a trip to Martha’s Vineyard without getting the famous Dirty Banana from Donovan’s Reef at Nancy’s for those of legal age. America’s oldest carousel, the Flying Horses, and the well-known gingerbread cottages also reside in “OB.” Of course, you can’t be on an island without going to the beach. A short drive to the southwestern tip of the Vineyard will bring you to the town of Aquinnah

and the historic Gay Head Lighthouse, the first lighthouse to be constructed on the island, which sits atop picturesque clay cliffs facing the water. While the cliffs are off-limits to limit erosion, a walking path leads down to the beach for a view from below and a lookout point at the top offers a panoramic view of the area. A sunset view is best found at Menemsha Beach in Chilmark, which also has an active fishing harbor, so a fresh bite to eat is only a short walk away.

If the ferry ride to the island isn’t enough time on the water for you, a sail on The Black Dog Tall Ships are a must.

Afternoon and sunset sails on the schooner Alabama allow you to bring your own snacks and beverages for a three-hourlong sail spent learning the history of The Black Dog, helping raise the sails, and watching the sun go down over the water. Weeklong Kids Cruises are also offered on the Shenandoah if your little one is an avid sailor.

While finding a place to stay on the island can be tough, the way to go is to reserve one of the many vacation rentals owned by locals and off-islanders—just be sure to book your stay early so you don’t miss out on any Vineyard fun!

Chopped pecans or walnuts

The estimated total time to make this recipe is 25-30 minutes.

» In a mixing bowl, combine pureed banana with the rest of the wet ingredients. Stir well. Add in the dry ingredients. Stir to combine, then stir in pecans or walnuts if using. Spread mixture evenly on a baking pan.

» Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line a large rimmed baking sheet pan with foil and spray with cooking spray (or a silpat mat or parchment paper). Puree banana in food processor or blender (or using an immersion blender).

» Bake for 25 minutes, remove from the oven and break apart granola, stirring it around.

Place it back into the oven for an additional 10 minutes. Let cool completely and enjoy, or place in airtight container for up to seven days, or freezer for up to three months.

Contributes $10,000 to Riding to the Top RIDING TO THE TOP THERAPEUTIC Riding Center (RTT) announced May 8, 2017 that on a recent visit to the farm to observe a therapeutic riding lesson, Patricia Weigel, President of Norway Savings Bank (NSB) presented a $10,000 check in support of the organization’s 2017 programs. The bank’s donation kicks off RTT’s annual corporate giving campaign and ensures that equine assisted activities and therapies are available and accessible to more Maine children and adults with disabilities. Each

year, RTT provides innovative equine services to more than 250 children and adults. Since 2003, Norway Savings Bank has contributed $135,000 to RTT. The bank’s donation officially launches RTT’s annual corporate giving campaign, which has a fundraising goal of $30,000.

In the coming months, Norway Savings Bank will play an important role in helping RTT meet its fundraising goal by encouraging area businesses to join the bank in supporting the organization and its mission.

Memorial Scholarship Established

In memory of Equine Program Director THE UNIVERSITY OF LOUISVILLE COLLEGE of Business has established a memorial scholarship in memory of Timothy T. Capps, who died April 22, 2017, following a stroke.

Capps, 71, a highly regarded consultant in the horse racing industry, had been director of the Equine Industry Program since 2011.

The Timothy T. Capps Memorial Scholarship will be awarded annually to one equine business student at the University of Louisville who possesses the same positive qualities that Capps exhibited throughout his life—a strong will, a passion for horses, and a desire to succeed and learn. The award will be $3,000 ($1,500 per semester).

2017 IHSA Nationals 50 Years, 30+ Champions, One Collegiate Spirit CELEBRATING THE 50TH anniversary of the founding of Intercollegiate Horse Shows Association in 1967, the National Championships, held May 3-7 at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, KY, hosted 25 hunt seat and western teams and more than 400 individual qualifying riders to vie for the most coveted titles in collegiate equestrian sport. The Savannah College of Art & Design (SCAD) team and coach Ashley Henry delivered the ultimate hat trick, winning a third consecutive Collegiate Cup as high point hunt seat team. St. Andrews University (SAU) Knights and coach Carla Wennberg clinched their own AQHA Trophy for High Point Western Team (having shared 2016 honors with Berry College) and Brittany Abernathy made history as the first-ever AQHA Trophy high

point western rider for Northeastern Oklahoma A&M University.

Under the keen observance of hunt seat judges Linda Andrisani and Stephen Wall, and in front of USEF President Murray Kessler, Katherine Steiner topped a field of 38 qualifiers from across eight IHSA Zones, competing on the flat and over fences, winning the USEF Cacchione Cup for 2017.

“This is one of the best arenas to work in,” said course designer Tom Hern, referring to the indoor Alltech stadium. “Since intercollegiate riding is based on the draw, I built courses that incorporated options and encouraged horses and riders to keep striding straight and forward.”

The AQHA Trophy Reserve High Point Team was Black Hawk College, coached by Donna Irvin and capping a 26-year career as coach and professor of equine studies at BHC for the AQHA Professional Horseman and barrel racing clinician. “They never gave up,” she said. “This is one of the hardest working student teams I know. We’ve been third three times. This is our first reserve national title.” Under Irvin, the two-year college has qualified teams for the Nationals every year since 2002.

“We asked so much of the U.S. Team this week, from jumping on unfamiliar horses, to handling the crazy weather during their rides, and even having them compete in an intense game of laser tag,” said Christy Parker, a coach of the Stripes Team. “These riders delivered 100% every time. The U.S. Team members confidently rode their unfamiliar mounts and performed well. Coaches had the opportunity to substitute athletes for a segment (rail or pattern) where the horse/athlete combination fit best. The U.S. Team utilized this method during the ThreeGaited and Five-Gaited segments, which was a successful tool in managing the horse/athlete combinations and scores.

“All of these kids handled riding new horses, switching horses, and a few catch rides beautifully,” said Avery Bul, a coach of the Stars Team.

“They were never phased, stayed calm through their patterns, and gave it their all. We couldn’t have asked for a better group to work with, the double-gold is icing on the cake for this experience.”

Bay State Trail Riders Association Hosts First Two Trail Rides of the Summer Season SUBMITTED ANNAMARIA PAUL; PHOTOS BY SUZANNE NICHOLAS

THE BAY STATE TRAIL RIDERS Association (BSTRA) kicked off their ride season on April 9 at the Wallis Street Parking Area of Douglas State Forest.

Originally scheduled in March, the March Madness Ride was postponed due to snow and poor footing, but was worth the wait. The day turned out to be sunny and trails were dry. Four and a half miles is a perfect distance for humans and horses still getting back into shape after winter. The ride was sponsored

by Yellow Truck Gardens. Ride hosts, Kelly and Jim Shaw, grilled everyone a fabulous lunch. The chili was especially delicious. Additional thanks go to Lynn Paresky, Becky Kalagher, and Karen Parlin for their efforts to make the ride successful.

After lunch, the drawing for the $300 Tourbillon Trailer Gift Certificate for Annual Service was drawn by Mike DiPalma of Tourbillon Trailer. Valerie Clark of Thompson, CT, was the lucky winner. Mike also supplied pre-ride coffee and doughnuts.

The 19th Annual Scavenger Hunt, sponsored by UniBank, was held on Sunday, May 8 in Upton State Forest.

It was a lovely May Sunday, the type of day when deciding whether to wear the coat or not is a tough decision. Despite recent rains, there was six miles of good footing for the horses and even more importantly for the treasure hunters. The trails were littered with rocks and logs for remounting.

This year’s clues were challenging. It

took my group three miles and as many trail names to figure out the common denominator and another two miles to find the item. We were surprised to discover that while the post office does not deliver mail on Sundays, it does deliver deep into the woods. We never did find the letter but we had a stamp and money to pay the bill. Then there was the road apple. Let’s just leave that one to imagination (we were grateful for the baggie).

A tasty lasagna lunch and desserts were provided to returning riders.

Ribbons and a raffle followed lunch.

During the three-day weekend, riders competed in Hunt Seat Equitation Over Fences and Equitation. The IEA format requires that riders compete in unfamiliar tack on unfamiliar mounts; therefore, they draw their horses the day of competition and enter the arena after a brief, if any, warm-up.

In the individual competition, Abigail Whitmer, grade 10, who rides for Tuscaloosa Equestrian Team in Tuscaloosa, AL (Zone 4) was named the 2017 Leading Hunt Seat Rider, winning the Varsity Open Championship class. Whitmer is coached by Reid Rickett.

The Champion of the Upper School Hunt Seat Team Competition was Grazing Fields Farm from Buzzards Bay, MA (Zone 1), and coached

by Jennifer Sullivan and Nicole Melanson. The Middle School Hunt Seat Team Champion was Movado Farms Equestrian Team from Durham, CT (Zone 1), and coached by Tricia Carlton and Louisa Fedora. The Team Spirit Award went to Chatham Hall from Chatham, VA (Zone 3).

The IEA holds the trait of good sportsmanship in the highest regard— both for riders and coaches. Lauren Britton-Kamber from Fortitude Farm in Milton, GA (Zone 4), took home the third Annual Coach Sportsmanship Award. Carly Stirewalt from Lucky C Stables in New Paltz, NY (Zone 2), was awarded the Victor Hugo-Vidal Sportsmanship Award.

Each year at IEA National Finals, the United States Pony Clubs, Inc. (USPC) presents a non-riding competition in the form of a test—A Holy Innocents’ Horsemanship Test for the Hunt Seat riders. Anna Bihuniak from Rising Star Equestrian Team in Medway, MA (Zone 1), was the overall winner.

Since its creation, the IEA has relied on the support from its many volunteers to assist in the success of the organization. Three Volunteer of the Show Awards, sponsored by Braveheart Farm at North Gate in Sudbury, MA, were awarded to Alex Prymek, grade 12, from Shreveport, LA (Zone 7), Madison Rheinheimer, grade 10, from Cleveland Heights, OH 74

(Zone 5), and Hannah Keough, grade 10, from Burton, OH (Zone 5), for their hard work at this year’s National Finals.

The Tenth Annual Timothy J. Boone Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to K. Simon Towns.

Towns is the former trainer at Falcon Ridge Stable in Woodstock, GA (Zone 4), and is the current IEA Zone Administrator Captain and the Zone 4 Administrator.

She also sits on the IEA Rules & Ethics Committee, Education Committee, and the IEA Board of Directors.

The IEA is committed to the wellness of the horses in all competitions. To recognize the quality of the horses donated for the three-day event, “Gypsy” (provided by Memory’s Hill Farm) was named Champion Outstanding IEA Hunt Seat Horse and “Gem” (also provided

by Memory’s Hill Farm) was named Reserve Champion Outstanding IEA Hunt Seat Horse.

“The outstanding quality of the horses brought to this show by our horse providers are among the best we have ever seen at any IEA Nationals,” said Roxane Durant, IEA Co-Founder and Executive Director.

“We know that our kids appreciated the opportunity to ride such quality horses in such a competitive and beautiful environment.”

THE RHODE ISLAND FEDERATION of Riding Clubs (RIFRC) held their annual Blessing of the Horses on April 30 at the LeGrand Reynolds Horseman’s area in Arcadia, RI. The day was perfect, with approximately 42 participants. We were pleased to see many West Greenwich Horseman’s Association (WGHA) members were in attendance. RIFRC President, Beth Stone, gave a quick speech before Assistant Pastor William Bell blessed the group of horses and their riders. Maria Papa was there once again with her beautiful voice to sing for everyone.

After the gathering, the riders had a choice of going out on a trail ride or relaxing until lunchtime. Linda Krul and Celeste Santos-Rivera marked a 10-mile

loop that could be ridden once or twice before lunch.

The Go Fish Trail Ride was the ride that almost wasn’t this year. There were many speed bumps for the event…cut trees took up a decent amount of the parking lot, and had also fallen on the trail, and Chef Ida was hurt and in the hospital. Ida has thankfully since recovered. The planned Go Fish Ride was then postponed due to the heavy rains. The rain also made marking the trails a challenge. In one portion of the trail, it had turned into a wide, flowing river. Luckily, when the rain date for the ride finally took place, the skies were clear, most of the footing had dried out, and the temperature gradually warmed up to perfect riding weather. The route consisted of wide dirt roads and

single-track trails. While riding, the goal was for riders to find and retrieve one fish cutout per person. Riders got to pick out a pail with treats when they turned in a fish cutout.

Upon returning from the first loop, horses enjoyed a snack of hay at their trailers while their riders had a choice of baked fish or roasted chicken with roasted potatoes, green salad, macaroni salad, and dessert. Once again, thanks go to all participants, especially Tammy and Joel Lamphere, along with Celeste SantosRivera, for preparing the trail and cooking the tasty lunch for the riders.

SUMMER IS UPON US! THE FOURTH of July’s Long Weekend Ride begins on Friday, June 30 and goes through Tuesday, July 4. There will be a potluck dinner in the pavilion Saturday evening, hosted by Danniel Rowland. Lynn Gogoyla, Ruth Strontzer, and Olga Agostini will host the Sunday breakfast. There is a poker ride following breakfast, hosted

by Stacey Dione. We are also planning on having another CPR clinic by the Connecticut Horse Council member, Meg Sautter.

Please note that Vevette Greenberg rescheduled the Rorabeck Wildlife Management ride to July 9.

Jen Ghiroli recently hosted a ride at Chatfield Hollow State Park. There were 26 riders and 27 horses. The weather was wonderful, along with the company of friends. It was great 76

After the ride, there was a surprise toast of cake, wine, and champagne to Jen for her recent marriage. We want to wish the new Mr. and Mrs. Boggiatto the best and for a long healthy happy life together.

Christel Mature had to lay her beloved dog, Champ, to rest. He was a frequent patron of our events, and our condolences go to Christel. We also are all hoping Joe Secondino is healing well from his surgeries.

Member Jim Dominic spent some time in the hospital in Tennessee. He was ill from a bad case of pneumonia. We are glad to report that he healed well and returned home quickly.

On May 6, Christel, along with Cathy Clouse, hosted a Blessing of the Mounts ride in Cheshire, CT. It

was a combined club event with the Cheshire Horse Council. After the ride, Cheshire members, John Barry and his wife, Christine, hosted all the riders at their farm for a barbecue.

Many thanks go to Pastor Tom Buchin for blessing the steeds!

It was a busy riding weekend, because the next day, May 7, Pat Gogoyla hosted a ride at White Memorial. The weather was a bit gloomy, but the ride was nonetheless wonderful.

Our annual barbecue and auction will be held August 13. This is our only major fundraiser for the club.

We could really use a great turn out, along with great donations to be auctioned off. We ask that all members donate one or more items— whether it be horse or camp related, we would be gracious!

THE 2017 QUIZ QUALIFYING RALLY was held April 22 at Chase Collegiate School in Waterbury, CT. The region would like to thank Chase Collegiate for hosting our event on such short notice due to a snow day. Also, a huge thank you goes to the two organizing clubs, Old Chatham and Running Fox Pony Clubs, along with the many volunteers that make these events possible.

There are many phases to the Quiz Competition, including Written Test, Classroom, Mega Room, Stations, and Barn. This year, there was one competitor who had a perfect score in the Mega Room—congratulations to Gabriella Femia. The high scoring individual for the day was Vicki Sawyer from Mystic Pony Club, followed by Emily Herbert of Ridge Riders.

In the Junior D Division, there were two sections: Junior D Division 1 first place winner was Mystic Pony Club with a score of 505.001. Second place went to Millbrook/Ridge Riders with a score of 485.502. Third place went Old Chatham with a score of 457.503.

The Junior D Division Section 2 first place winner was Connecticut Valley with a fantastic score of 541.001.

Shetucket Valley followed in second with a score of 494.002, and Oakendale II Riding Center rounded out the top three, finishing in third with a score of 389.503.

Sleeping Giant Pony Club took first place in the Senior D Division, with a score of 491.001, followed by Old Chatham/Brumbies with a 481.002 for second and Millbrook/Oakendale with a

479.003 for third.

There were very close scores in the Senior C Division. Two teams from six different clubs combined took first place—Granby, Ridge Riders, and Running Fox all received a score of 504.001. Second place had a similar tie between the Brumbies, Millbrook, and Sleeping Giant with a score of 429.002.

The United States Pony Clubs will hold their Annual Championships in Lexington, KY, at the Kentucky Horse Park. Every third year, members come to the Horse Park for championships followed by a festival. This year the dates are July 17-24. Members from across the country will come together to compete in the Quiz, Mounted Games, Dressage, Show Jumping, Eventing, and Tetrathlon.

SUMMER BRINGS WITH IT A BLANKET of leisure and downtime. The Norfolk Hunt Club (NHC) enjoys these brief moments of relaxation as they are few and far between! In the down time we have the opportunity to focus and familiarize ourselves with the small details and formalities of the hunt field.

First and foremost, hounds are never referred to as “dogs.” Being a hound is a privilege and comes with a distinct differentiation from a domesticated household dog. Another interesting note about hounds is that they are only counted in twos, and are called “couples.” It does not matter what gender the hounds are, couples can be same sex or opposite sex. This is because usually a young hound is attached to an older hound as a sort of apprentice in learning the ropes of his job. The term couple was derived from the double collar used to attach two hounds, which is called a couple.

In terms of hunt etiquette and normalcies; there are a few guar-

anteed things you will encounter at each hunt. The meal served after a hunt is always called breakfast even if it takes place later in the day. One might finish hunting at 3:00 p.m., but the meal would still be formally referred to as a breakfast. It is also proper to wish a master good morning at the beginning of the hunt and good night at the end of the hunt, regardless of the time of day the hunt begins or ends. An odd tradition, but it has been passed on and preserved for the overall hunting experience.

Formal attire as well as cleanliness is expected at all breakfasts, and no one may wear their spurs while in attendance.

Speaking of spurs, following proper attire is a large component of hunting. The little bow on the back of the hunt cap has a meaning.

If the bow tails point up, the rider is an unpaid member of the hunt or the hunt staff. A professional, or paid, huntsman wears their ribbons down. Ratcatcher attire is consid-

ered informal and is acceptable for weekday hunting or hunts before formal season begins. Ratcatcher attire consists of tweed coats, brown coats, and hues of tan. Once formal season starts, all attire must be standard and black—no brown. However, there is always the exception. Brown gloves are proper with formal attire because black gloves were previously only used when in mourning.

It is a cardinal rule that horses in the field are turned out as if they were heading to competition. Horses with red ribbons in their tails signals a potential kicker who needs space, where as a green ribbon in the tail represents a green hunt horse or novice rider. All horses should be clipped (full body clip or hunting clip) to avoid looking shaggy, manes should be pulled and on the proper side, and tack should be clean.

Masters have the right to excuse people from the hunt if they do not fit the bill, including incorrect attire, lack of braids at formal hunts, or poor behavior of horse, hound, or human. While it might sound stern, upholding these rules allows us to continue our imprint on the local community and hunt communities nation wide.

SHOW PREPARATIONS Blythewood Stables in Pittsfield, MA, held a clinic with international grand prix show jumping veteran and renowned trainer Mark Leone to kick off the season and participants had a great time. Riders rode in over fences sessions ranging from 2'6" to 3'3" and left feeling prepared to win some ribbons this show season.

TAKING AN EARLY LEAD Kathy Chiaf’s Kindred has enjoyed a successful spring season under the auspices of SBS Farms, Inc., based in Buffalo, NY. As of May 1, the bay warmblood leads the USHJA Green Hunter Incentive Program National Overall Standings with earnings of $3,876 as well as the Colts & Geldings and five-year-old section standings. Kindred topped the standings after impressive performances during the Pin Oak Charity Horse Show in

Katy, TX, in March, where he won the Green Hunter Incentive stake during Week 2 and placed second during Week 1.

With her win, Silvestri qualified for IEA National Finals and won Varsity Open Over Fences.

Abby Brand of Mount Ida College placed first in Novice Flat

at IHSA Regional Finals and qualified to ride at Zone Finals where she placed fifth. University of Mary Washington’s Olivia Blake placed second in Novice Flat at Zone Finals and finished seventh at National Finals.

At Fieldstone, Silvestri won the Pessoa/U.S. Hunter Seat Medal aboard Nice and placed second in the ASPCA Medal Maclay, T.H.I.S. National Children’s Medal, NEHC Junior Medal, and MHC Junior Medal.

Lydia Stenmark took champion in the Large Pony Hunter division on Rise and Shine while Katherine Dade and National Treasure took reserve in the Pony Jumpers.

NEEC CHANGES It was announced that the New England Equitation Championships adult divisions will be split into four age groups for the 2017 show. The four divisions will be 18-21, 22-27, 28-45, and 46+ and an Overall Grand Adult Championship class consisting of the champion and reserve champion of each of the divisions will be held.

THE NEW HAMPSHIRE HUNTER Jumper Association (NHHJA) kicked off its 2017 show series on Friday, May 12 at the Cheshire Fairgrounds, in Swanzey, NH. Like the month of March, the three-day show came in like a lamb, but ended like a lion with snow covering the grounds for early morning on Mother’s Day. The show management did a great job in migrating all of Sunday’s scheduled outdoor classes into the indoor arena days before the show started so that most of the classes stayed dry.

Many exhibitors wore smiles despite the challenging weather and enjoyed the last day of the show on Mother’s Day with an equestrian hug. Many mothers attending had the same response when asked how they felt about being at a horse show on Mother’s Day. “There is no place I’d rather be than watching my child here on Mother’s Day.” Some mothers responded with, “I’m riding today and

enjoy celebrating here instead of a dinner out.”

NHHJA President Melissa Barden commented, “we are thrilled about our show attendance and are very optimistic by the great interest in our 2017 show series. It took a little juggling with the tight schedule. Both our judges, Mr. Richard Luckhardt and Ms. Lisa Foster, were happy to accommodate the revised indoor ring schedule due to the challenging New England weather.

A competitive, safe, and fun exhibitor experience is our goal and we’re pleased to announce we achieved that this weekend.”

Kudos to the show secretary, Kara Quigley; with all of the changes and revisions, there was rarely ever a line at the show office and everything ran very smoothly.

Zimmerli powered through the jumpoff and galloped her victorious mount to the win in 36.42, two seconds ahead of the leading time. Zimmerli and Calido’s Treasure were fifth in the Johnson Horse Transportation Prix earlier in the week, and they made their exciting climb to the top on Sunday with an undoubtedly great ride to finish out the week on top.

“There was an option to do seven or eight strides to the triple combination and I chose the seven, I thought that would be the most challenging part of the course for my horse because he has a big stride and is not as tight in the front end,” said Zimmerli.

There was only one more trip left in the jump-off, Harold Chopping riding Basje, owned by Kendra Bullington. They clocked in at 37.76, sealing the victory for Zimmerli and securing the second place prize.

Madden, who hails from Cazenovia, NY, bested a field of 48 horses for the win over a course designed by Ken Krome of Westminster, MD. Riding Breitling LS, an 11-year old Dutch Warmblood stallion owned by Abigail Wexner, Madden was third to return

“Anytime you win it is special because this is quite a humbling sport; you can win one day and be on the ground the next,” said Madden, who was a member of the 2016 silver medal-winning team at the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games. “Last year, I concentrated a lot on the Olympics and didn’t try to win many grand prix events, but this horse has picked up two wins already this year and it feels great.”

For Ramsay, Sunday’s second place finish aboard Cocq a Doodle is a step in the right direction towards the 10-year-old Dutch Warmblood mare becoming a top grand prix mount.

Ramsay has had Cocq a Doodle for about a year and is competing at Old Salem Farm for the first time this year.

“She is a great horse—really fast and competitive,” said Ramsay. “She gave it her all, and in the end it wasn’t quite quick enough today, but we will keep on trying. The track posed some good questions with some options, so you weren’t locked into the numbers and it allowed us to adjust for our different horses.”

The Old Salem Farm Spring Shows is the first competition for Jacobs and Cassinja S after competing at the Longines FEI World Cup Final in Omaha, NE, earlier this spring.

Cassinja S, an 11-year-old Dutch Sporthorse mare, is coming off a month-long rest.

“I am debating whether or not to show her next week because of how nicely she went,” said Jacobs, who has owned Cassinja S for four years. “As with most great horses, as they get older they tend to mature and develop in terms of their repertoire and ability, and she really showed that here. I could not be more proud of how she is jumping.”

DYNAMIC DUO The team at Murphy Eventing based out of Autumn Hill Farm in Epping, NH, sends congratulations to Sarah Chappell Armentrout and her family on their purchase of “Duds.” Previously owned by Pamela Payson, Duds is a chunky Quarter Horse that the Armentrout family is sure to love.

WHAT A GIRL Daryl Kinney of Tamarack Hill Farm in Strafford, VT, traveled to Maryland with Rosie’s Girl for the Fair Hill International April Horse Trials and the trip was worth it! The pair had a clean crosscountry round and a single rail in show jumping to finish in ninth in Intermediate with a score of 54.8.

SEASON OPENER Students of Teich Eventing of Orchard Hill Equestrian Center in Berlin, MA, began their competition season this spring at the University of New Hampshire (UNH) Spring Horse Trials. Trainer Caroline Teich took fourth in Training A with Dondarrion while student Olivia Alminde and Moonstruck were second in Training C alongside Riley Mongeau and Deep Sea. Lastly, Sarah Listzwan and

NEW PAIRS True North Farm of Harwich, MA, has some new pairings in the barn to report! Congratulations to Sam Morse on her lease of Saltando Conejo or “Bunny” and to Katie Brackett on her lease of Royal Music or “Apollo.” Both pairs are training hard for the event season.

SANDBOX SCHOOLING After a week of “boot camp,” JH Eventing students of Baile Hill Farm in Sutton, MA, headed to the Charles River Dressage Association show to put their training to the test and do some schooling in the sandbox. Helen Crosby took third and fifth on Dante’s Tale with their USEA 2014 Test Of Choice, while Mayce Spangenberg and My Lucky Clover were third and Adelaide Grave took fifth on I’m Yellin’ Timber.

CONDOLENCES Our condolences go out to John Williams on the loss of his Olympic mount Carrick. Williams and the Canadian Sport Horse competed at the four-star level in competitions such as the 2002 World Equestrian Games and the 2004 Olympic Games.

GRAND GRANTS The United States Eventing Association (USEA) Foundation announced the creation of the $1,000,000 Wilton Fair Fund donated by David and Cheryl Lenaburg to support developing riders. The Fund will allow up to $100,000 in grants to be given each year for a variety of educational opportunities for riders

CLEAN SWEEP Emerald Isles Eventing Center in Westborough, MA, took riders to the Orchard Hill Equestrian Center Spring Two-Phase for some pre-season preparation. Maya Gaines on Bantry Bays Winston, Anna Miksis on Bantry’s Bay Dublin, and Julia Clive on Little Miss America all had clean show jumping phases to finish on their dressage scores!

RETIRED Allison Springer of Upperville, VA, announced that her longtime partner Arthur has been

diagnosed with a heart condition and subsequently will retire from eventing. Together, the pair completed 38 of 44 FEI events they entered, with highlights including a USEF National Championship and an overall second place finish at the Rolex Kentucky CCI4* in 2012. The duo was named to the United States Olympic Team Short list in 2012 before going on to finish sixth at the Burghley CCI4*. Arthur will now enjoy doing dressage and light jumping with Allison.

Jersey Fresh International Three-Day Event Crowns Dutton, Dorr, Little, and Keiffer Champions THE WEEKEND OF COMPETITION at the Jersey Fresh International Three-Day Event (JFI), presented by B.W. Furlong & Associates, tested the fitness and athleticism of both horse and rider over three days of high caliber competition. In the CCI3*, Phillip Dutton aboard Mr. Candyman won the weekend with a final score of 58.9.

Dutton and Mr. Candyman, the 16.3 hand Hanoverian gelding owned by Ann Jones, Tom Tierney, Caroline Moran, and Bridget Cole, finished their weekend as the CCI3* winner with a score of 58.9 after efficiently navigating the obstacles on Capt.

Dutton and Mr. Candyman were also awarded a brand-new County Saddle, provided by JFI sponsor Country Saddlery and the “Best Conditioned Horse” in the CCI3* sponsored by Horseware. Lizzy Jahnke and Princeton, an 11-yearold New Zealand TB gelding owned

by Lightspeed Equestrian, jumped a clear round in their first CCI3*, only 86

incurring one time penalty to finish in second place on a score of 75.8 after moving from tenth to second place following cross-country. Also competing in his first CCI3*, Dom Schramm and Bolytair B, the 11-yearold Dutch Warmblood gelding owned

by Connor Giesselman, had two unfortunate rails down to add to their score. The pair however, held onto their position to finish in third place with a score of 87.4.

“To win at this level is a great achievement,” said Dutton. “Cements my idea that he’s ready for a four star now. With the difficult conditions yesterday, I liked the way he handled things and was very mature about things and then to come out and jump well today. I couldn’t be more pleased with this horse.”

Completing her first CCI2*, Cornelia Dorr and Louis M, her 12-year-old Rhinelander gelding, were victorious in the CCI2* division ending her weekend on a 49.8.

Boyd Martin and Kyra, the 10-year-old Canadian Warmblood mare owned by Christine Turner, secured a second

place finish with a final score of 52.2 after a double clear show jumping round. Rounding out the top three, Jennie Brannigan piloted the sevenyear-old Twilightslastgleam, owned

by Nina Gardner, around the ring to producing a fault-free performance to take third in the CCI2* on a score of 56.6.

In the CIC3*, Marilyn Little and RF Scandalous, the 12-year-old Oldenburg mare owned by Jacqueline Mars, Robin Parsky, and Phoebe Manders, pulled one unlucky rail in the show jumping phase to add four penalties to their score, ending the competition with a total score of 57.7. With the healthy lead after their cross-country round, Little and RF Scandalous maintained their position and took home the top honors. Boyd Martin and Testserleg, the 16.3 hand Trakehner gelding owned by Christine Turner, continued to climb the leaderboard, jumping clear to move into second place with a final score of 69.6. In third place in the CIC3*, William Coleman aboard Boris O’Hara, the 11-year-old KWPN gelding owned

by Kathleen McDermott, were foot perfect in show jumping, soaring up the ranks ending their competition weekend on a 70.2.

It is with no surprise that after a successful weekend in all three phases, in all kinds of weather, D.A. Duras was awarded the “Best

Conditioned Horse” in the CIC2*.

Keiffer’s groom, Jenn Cain, was also recognized by winning the best groom award. Sharon White’s own Cooley On Show, the 16.3 hand Irish Sport Horse gelding, came in second place in CIC2* with a final score of 51.8.

Rounding out the top three in the CIC2* division was Sara Kozumplik Murphy and Ruben D’Ysieux, a 12-year-old Selle Francais gelding, had a double clear round in show jumping to end in third place with a final score of 59.9.

In an emotional awards ceremony, White was also awarded the Philippa Humphreys Memorial Sportsmanship Award, where a contribution from JFI was made in White’s name to go towards Humphreys’ daughter, Millie’s, scholarship fund. “I think the Philippa award kept everything in perspective,” said White. “She loved her relationship with her horses and this is what it is all about. That’s the important thing about this weekend, you’re out here getting to know your horses and getting the job done.”

Jung Scores a Three-Peat At Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event

IN THE 39-YEAR HISTORY OF THE Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event, presented by Land Rover, only three riders have ever managed to win two years in a row. But Michael Jung made history by winning the 2017 Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event for a third consecutive time aboard FischerRocana FST. The German duo lowered one rail in show jumping to finish on 42.7 penalties, just ahead of France’s Maxime Livio and Qalao Des Mers in second with 44.6 and England’s Zara Tindall and High Kingdom in third with 46.6.

However, his six-point lead going into the show jumping allowed for one mistake to claim the victory.

“Without the horse you are just walking people, I’m not sure how you say that in English,” said Jung with a laugh. “This is a very wonderful horse, she is absolutely a top horse, and she is always fighting for me. We have a partnership, I know everything that she needs for me to motivate her. But she was perfect. I am so thankful for my

whole team and my horse.”

Livio of Saumur, France, had been chasing Jung all weekend, and he is the only person to have beaten him in recent memory, but he settled for second place. His powerful doubleclean round put the pressure on Jung as he cantered out of the ring.

“Of course there is pressure because I want to be good enough for my horse, and after that it’s good for me to start to put pressure on (Jung),” Livio said. “I think to try beat such a rider you have to be 100 percent all the time. All this week my horse was 100 percent, but I was maybe only 90 percent in dressage.

But after that I have no regrets.”

“I was quite unsure about whether I should bring him,” Dutton admitted of the 18-year-old Mr. Medcott who suffered an injury and has spent the last two years recovering. “He’s been off for two years, but there wasn’t much else for him the rest of the year that was suitable, and for a horse like this, this is an appropriate event. But for him to show so much heart—I mean, I only did one horse trial on him in two years. He’s such an incred-

ible horse. I probably didn’t have him fit enough, but he was just incredible this weekend.”

In the Dubarry of Ireland Nations Team Challenge, Team USA jumped out in front of the combined New Zealand/ France/Germany team to win with a score of 179.2. The combined team finished second with 180.3 over Team Canada in third with 231.5. Team USA included Hannah Sue Burnett on Under Suspection, Boyd Martin on Cracker Jack, Dutton on Fernhill Fugitive, and Lauren Kieffer on Vermiculus.

New Hampshire Dressage and Eventing Association Youth on a Mission for a Great Cause EARLIER THIS SPRING, SEVERAL New Hampshire Dressage and Eventing Association (NHDEA) youth volunteered at Dawn-Mar Riding Academy in Hopkinton, NH, to help prepare the horses and barn for the riding season.

Dawn-Mar is a therapeutic riding facility dedicated to helping people with and without life challenges and disabilities gain confidence, find acceptance, and experience the joys of life through riding. Part of the mission of Dawn-Mar, offered through the charitable program Shared Gifts, also provides care and love for older, retired, and rescue horses, pairing them with children of all abilities to compete in Special Olympics and 4-H events.

Marcia Evans, Dawn-Mar owner and operator, has been working with New Hampshire youth for more than 40 years.

A decorated dressage rider and clinician, Marcia was once an Olympic hopeful.

She successfully reached the second level of Olympic trials, training under Barbara Kemp and Colonel Burton, before an injury sidelined her. Since that time, Marcia has been very busy breaking down barriers and creating opportunities for New Hampshire equestrian youth.

She founded the Merrimack Valley Equestrian Special Olympics Program, which runs out of UNH each spring.

Marcia, leader of the 4-H Easy Rider program, also pioneered the “unified barn” concept by which special students are included and compete in 4-H competi88

tions throughout the state.

Thanks to this equal opportunity approach, in addition to learning to ride, children of all abilities learn to care for their service animals as they embrace their differences and offer each other support and friendship.

On April 22, NHDEA youth spent the day clipping and grooming several of the horses and ponies at Dawn-Mar. They sorted, cleaned, and labeled show tack to do their part in helping Dawn-Mar prepare for its busy show season.

SPECTACULAR SHOW Colleen O’Connor-Disk Dressage of Harvard, MA, has started the 2017 show season.

Congrats to Sue Mercer and Bianca GGF for getting their second score at Fourth Level, in their second show competing at that level. Kudos also go to Renee Suprenant and Prin for a beautiful ride, also competing at Fourth Level.

Achilles 3, owned by Jane Gannon, won the PSG Stakes class with Archie’s highest score at that level. Thrilled with Wild Orchidee, owned by Karin Hoeffler, was spectacular in her second Intermediary I test.

The team won the FEI Test of Choice class with a 66.9%, with one of the judges awarding a 69.9%! Cary Dyer and Carrera GGF also earned their final score toward the Bronze at

Mystic Valley Hunt Club. A very exciting start to the show season to say the least!

COLLEGE CHALLENGE Thanks to five days of hard work, this year’s Intercollegiate Dressage Association (IDA) National Championships, hosted

by Centenary University in Long Valley, NJ, was an immense success. Twelve college dressage teams qualified for the event, and riders on each team randomly drew Centenary University and Cazenovia College horses to ride. The top teams were close in points throughout the competition—however, Averett University took home the national title followed by Mount Holyoke College.

SHOWSTOPPER Michael Bragdell, head trainer

at Hilltop Farm of Colora, MD, had a fantastic time at the Commonwealth Dressage & Combined Training Association Dressage Show at Morven Park Equestrian Center. Mitch and Lara Mitchelson’s Faberge Blue continued his winning ways with 73% and 76% scores in his Fourth Level Test 3 and Fourth Level Freestyle classes. Iris Aberbach’s Boxster A made the move up to the Intermediate A test and handily won both his FEI Test of Choice classes with a 70%. Well done!

IN IT TO WIN IT Ashley Holzer, who is now representing the USA and residing in New York City, and Havanna 145 rode to their first major international win in the FEI Grand Prix Freestyle at the Tryon Spring Dressage I CDI 3* hosted at Tryon International Equestrian Center (TIEC). Holzer and Havanna 145 scored a 73.735% for the win, while Megan Lane (CAN) and San D’Or rode to second place, receiving a 72.660%. P.J. Rizvi (USA) and Breaking Dawn rounded out the top three finishers earning a 71.650%.

Holzer, who is representing the United States for the first time internationally after representing Canada at the highest levels of competition for a majority of her career, guided the mare to an impressive win in the George H. Morris Arena.

In their Large Tour debut, the pair picked up a seventh place finish in the FEI Grand Prix.

HEALTHY HORSE AWARD Barroco (Torre x Vadia), a 10-year-old Lusitano stallion owned by Candace Platz, is the epitome of equine beauty. In recognition of Platz’s topnotch horse care, Barroco, known as Roco for short, won the Omega Alpha Healthy Horse Award at the Gold Coast Dressage Association Finale I & II in Wellington, FL. Barroco is based out of Ruth Hogan-Poulsen Dressage, which operates at Bespoke Farm in Wellington, FL, during the winter and at East Hill Farm in Plainfield, VT, during the summer. Platz, who is from Poland Spring, ME, trains with Hogan-Poulsen year-round.

Heather Blitz and Praestemarkens Quatero HEATHER BLITZ (USA) AND Praestemarkens Quatero made an impressive FEI CDI debut in Small Tour competition at the Tryon Spring CDI 3* presented by Adequan® at Tryon International Equestrian Center (TIEC).

Blitz and Praestemarkens Quatero received a 74.250% to secure the win in the FEI Intermediaire I Freestyle CDI 3* presented by Adequan. Christilot Boylen (CAN) and Rockylane took second place with a 72.600% while Ashley Holzer (USA), who placed first with Havanna 145 for the FEI Grand PRix Freestyle the day before, and Radondo finished in third place with a 71.775% on the final day of competition.

Blitz and her own Praestemarkens Quatero, a 2009 Danish Warmblood gelding (Quarterback x Rohdiamant) made their first FEI CDI appearance this week, taking all three classes in the Small Tour including the FEI Prix St. Georges, FEI Intermediaire I, and FEI Intermediaire I Freestyle. Blitz has been riding Quatero since 2015 and has taken her time solidifying their communication and understanding together before pursuing a 92

competition schedule.

“I was a little funny getting started today and was a bit behind the music from the beginning, so I played a bit of catch up. I wasn’t sure how he would do in the rain, but quite frankly, we have such a great trust in each other now that if I tell him it’s going to be okay he goes with it,” commented Blitz. “There were a few little errors in the test, but for his first time in a CDI and to do the freestyle, which we only finished two weeks ago, is just amazing. I couldn’t be happier.”

Blitz worked patiently and diligently to earn the trust of Praestemarkens Quatero, who she feels has an immense talent and strength that will make him a top mount in the future. While it’s taken time for Blitz to feel completely confident in bringing the gelding out, over the past month he proved that he was ready to be tested in a larger competition atmosphere.

“I got him two years ago and during that time we have gone through a lot. It’s been all about learning to trust each other from day one. Whatever he has in his mind is what he’s passionate about, so now that

I’ve gained his trust he passionately wants to please me,” she elaborated. “His willingness to listen to me was phenomenal this week; especially knowing that deep down he was very nervous. He stuck with me and I thought the strength for us this week was his steadiness. He flows really well and he’s a powerful horse, which comes across quite impressively in the ring.”

Having worked with freestyle choreographer and composer Marlene Whitaker for over a decade, Blitz felt confident that the pair’s music selection would show off the quality of Praestemarkens Quatero’s movements and expression. Whitaker helped Blitz pull together the routine, which was only completed two weeks prior for the pair to begin practicing.

“Marlene Whitaker has been working with me for almost 10 years and I completely trust her opinion and judgment when it comes to choosing music. She gave me three adaptions to look at and as soon as I heard this one, I knew that it was it. The choreography is very fitting for him and I couldn’t have been more pleased with how it went today.”

Connecticut Dressage and Combined Training Association Makes Powerful Strides in 2017 SUBMITTED BY CALLY HENCY

THE CONNECTICUT DRESSAGE AND Combined Training Association (CDCTA) has made a powerful step into 2017, hosting many fantastic events for the riders in Connecticut. The CDCTA is an organization dedicated to providing opportunities to train and educate riders of all ages. We strive to give our members a memorable experience each and every time they participate with the club.

The best thing about January with the CDCTA is celebrating the successful year prior with friends, awards, and always delicious food. Each time, we ask our members what they want to do and what they would like to see added to our list of events. Together, we came up with a pretty strong and enjoyable 2017 season!

The winter is always the toughest part of being an equestrian in New England. Our club takes advantage of these months by keeping our minds on sunny weather.

In February, we welcomed Liz Piacentini for a seminar about our mental toughness. She was able to aid us in creating our own tools to add to our toolbox, which came in handy later on.

When the weather started to break, the club took some time to watch a dressage test from C for a change. Holly Whitney of Windham Hill Farm taught a great clinic on how to scribe for a judge, which was a great learning opportunity for riders and volunteers alike.

Warmer weather brought outdoor riding, where Tim Malin taught a busy day of stadium jumping. Many different types of horses and riders attended, which made an exceptional and entertaining audit experience that kept Tim on his toes all day. Alison Eastman Lawler came to satisfy the eventers in June, teaching an incredible cross-country clinic at Scarlet Hill Farm. As cross-country normally

does, the day brought the adrenaline junkies together to enjoy an exciting day of jumping.

The CDCTA also prides itself on running an organized and friendly competition.

The club’s show series is fantastic, adding new features each year. 2017 brought fun and popular classes to the list, including Western Dressage and Leadline Dressage.

In addition to allowing adults to learn and enjoy the art of dressage, the leadline class brings the younger riders to the sport and gives them the same show experience.

Charles River Dressage Association Members Share the Benefits of Belonging to the Club SUBMITTED BY ANGELA RICE AND KEVIN HADFIELD

AT A RECENT MONTHLY CHARLES River Dressage Association (CRDA) meeting, we discussed our detailed stories of what the CRDA community means to us. The organization provides opportunities to its members, but most importantly, it provides a wonderful learning experience and positive circle of supportive members. Members receive discounted rates on CRDA sponsored functions, clinic auditing, and reduced fees for shows.

Additionally, members earn year-end awards for participating in the dressage schooling shows hosted four times a year at Apple Knoll Farm in Millis, MA. The shows are run as smoothly as any rated show, and the volunteers and show organizers are pleasant and friendly. One student who started showing at CRDA competitions went on to win at National Pony Championships! Many of the

competitors are regulars, and the environment is positive and helpful. Not only have I competed with my own horses, but I also bring many clients with me, most of whom are junior riders. The show is well organized and the stewards are so helpful that it makes students less nervous and more confident going into the ring. The show offers a large range of class options, which cater to all riders.

Clinics offered by CRDA are well run and offer a range of high-level dressage expertise. Their year-end clinician is always a trainer of note and an event to look forward to all year! This year the club will welcome back Jacqueline Brooks.

“I started with CRDA at a young age in 2001 when my trainer encouraged me to find a love for dressage by attending the

shows and clinics provided by CRDA. As a young rider, I experienced the environment of a show whilst also learning the requirements for the varying dressage tests as well as dressage show etiquette.

This has helped shape me in all facets of my riding career, where I’ve translated this education into other riding disciplines.

More recently, I’ve brought my green horse, Preston, to CRDA to give him positive experiences at a show. Last year we competed at Training Level, and attended the year-end clinic with Jacqueline Brooks; this has allowed me to better understand Preston’s potential beyond what I thought.”

CRDA provides educational opportunities for those who may not be able to experience it otherwise. We encourage amateur riders to take advantage of all that the club offers.

CONDOLENCES Our condolences go to the family of Edward L. Werner, 84, of Newville, PA, and Woodbury, CT. Edward passed away on Friday, April 14 at Carlisle Regional Medical Center in Carlisle, PA. The son of the late Edward and Cecilia (McNamara) Werner, he was born on May 7, 1932 in New York City and was an avid golfer, horseman, and storyteller. He and his wife enjoyed and participated in combined driving events with their horses for many years.

DRIVING DEBUT Heidi Johnson officially made her driving debut at the Green Mountain Horse Association (GMHA) Combined Test and Arena Driving Trial in May, finishing first in the Training Horse divisions on both days. Heidi wishes to thank Bonnie Jean of Blackbridge Farm in Southbridge, MA, for Merlin. This pair will be ones to watch.

FIRST PLACE RIBBON In the Two-Phase Event at GMHA this year, Sue Rogers driving her new pony, Rory, took Preliminary Single Pony blue ribbon. The pair drove double clear on cones on Saturday and got a 43.6 for their dressage score.

REMINDER The location for the ADS Northeast Region Recreational Drive has been moved to Myles Standish Park in South Carver, MA, although the dates remain the same, with the event scheduled for September 28 through October 1. Besides

driving, there will be historic tours of Plymouth and the famous Carver Cranberry bogs, hands on demonstrations, a silent auction, and much more.

PICKPOCKET ADT The Pickpocket Arena Driving Trial was held May 7 in Brentwood, NH. Ten drivers showed in the first of a series that will run over the summer and fall season. Linda and Eric Wilking offered a beginner friendly environment for drivers. All report that they had a great time and the food was fabulous. Janet Oliver took home the blue ribbon in the Intermediate Pony division

SUICIDE PREVENTION PROGRAM The Carriage Barn of Kensington, NH, with the support of the Exeter Hospital Foundation, announces that it will be offering scholarships for its Youth Suicide Prevention this summer. The program focuses on working with preteens and adolescents and runs though mid-August. The desired outcome is that these youth will feel a supportive, emotional tie and have the coping skills to regroup, identify, and rebuild relationships. THE SOUTHERN NEW ENGLAND Carriage Driving Association (SNECDA) kicked off spring with our annual SNECDA Arena Driving Trial (ADT) Fun Day at Blackbridge Farm in Southbridge, MA, on April 22. Eleven drivers turned out on a cold, damp day for friendly competition, education, and just plain fun.

Keith Angstadt judged the event this year, providing drivers with insightful instruction in all three phases of the ADT. The Training Level winner was Kathy Richard and her Very Small Equine (VSE), Poco. Kathy and Poco also won the High Point Dressage Score Award. Second place in the Training Level division went to another VSE, Noodle, driven by Pat Musser. The Preliminary Level winner was Leila McNeff and her VSE, Honey.

SNECDA would like to thank Phil and Bonnie Jean for hosting the event at their beautiful Blackbridge Farm. Participants were grateful for the brand new indoor arena as rain fell during the morning dressage portion of the show. Fortunately, the sky cleared for the afternoon in time for the cones competition. Thanks to the tremendous space available to us at Blackbridge Farm, we were able to have a separate cones course for the VSEs, which allowed the show to proceed in a timely manner and accommodate horses, ponies, and VSEs. Participants returned to the indoor arena for the hazards portion of the ADT. Blackbridge Farm provided an ideal setting for the event.

We would like to thank the event

organizers, Ginny Halfpenny and Lisa Terrell for their hard work, Carleen Crummett for scribing, and our many volunteers. The success of all of our SNECDA events is due to the many dedicated carriage enthusiasts we are lucky enough to have as members.

Other SNECDA events include the Annual Pleasure Driving Show at Celtic Cross Farm in Dudley, MA, on Sunday, September 17. This ADS-sanctioned event will be judged

by John Greenall, with Susan Koso as Technical Delegate. Our annual Scurry Challenge will also be held at Celtic Cross Farm on Saturday of the same weekend, September 16. This light competition will include five different cones courses. Participants in both days are invited to stable and camp onsite. COMPETITION SEASON IS UPON us. Things kicked off at Orleton Farm in June, and we look forward to the Lorenzo Driving Competition this month, and the Saratoga Driving Association Driving Trial on October 7-8. Muffy Seaton is coming to us for the first time as judge and Erika Matulich, as technical delegate. Muffy will be giving a clinic on Monday, October 9.

Competitions are wonderful for keeping us focused. Is the horse good enough if we want to show? What should we work on to get prepared? Is it too much for our old campaigner or is the green horse ready? What would we do if we don’t compete? Should we bother to volunteer?

All these questions go through most riders’ heads. This year’s cold spring has put us behind and made it more

difficult to get horses in condition. So this year, the club scheduled clinics that will help riders get their horses show ready. This includes the process of getting your horse loaded up, transported, and then harnessed and hitched in a new place.

We scheduled John Greenall on June 21 and July 19, both midweek dates for $75. For new drivers without a horse or to audit, the price will be $20 to work with Jeff Morse.

Marc Johnson is coming for a Cones Clinic on Saturday, August 5.

Registration for this clinic is $75. We had a very successful clinic with Marc last year and we are delighted to have him return. We are also thrilled that once again he is our course designer for the Driving Trial in October. We intend to build a new hazard with

Marc’s design out of money we raised at the conference. We plan to improve our Competitor’s Dinner on Saturday night at the competition.

The final clinic is the Monday after the driving trial with our judge, Muffy Seaton. This is the first year that Muffy comes to us. We have found that hosting a clinic after the competition is a great way to get immediate feedback from the judge to make suggestions and corrections for riders.

We always need volunteers, so please make it a priority to join us October 7 and 8. We try to make this an enjoyable day out in the October foliage. Bring a friend, a coworker, a spouse, or someone you think might be interested. We will take you for a half day, or promise to keep friends together, and we promise you will have a great time.

WILD SEASON Cazenovia College’s Equestrian Team of Cazenovia, NY, placed eighth in the AQHA Team Trophy competition at the 2017 IHSA Nationals. Riders included Dana Reynolds (Open Horsemanship), Saralyn Darmstatter (Advanced Horsemanship), Gabby Tebo (Novice Horsemanship), Kristen Perry (Intermediate Horsemanship), Shannon Fairbairn (Beginner Horsemanship), and Kristen Wesoja (Reining). STARTING GATE JD Performance Horses of Oswego, NY, hit its first AQHA show of the season with some great results. Emma Parrish and her new mount, GoodnReady to Rumble, won their western pleasure classes and finished at the top of all of their showmanship classes.

Mia Morgia and Invite Me Up won all twelve of her under saddle classes, also taking home wins in the equitation and the performance geldings. Arianna Ostrander and Hes The Rage won in the performance geldings, plus took home ribbons in her first western pleasure class. Great job girls!

TERRIFIC TEAM Crystal Farm LLC of Dunstable, MA, had a great showing at the Northeast Reining Horse Association’s Spring Spin in Springfield, MA, with new trainer Jake Masterson. The team consistently improved throughout the weekend, taking home 13 first place

NINE MILLION DOLLAR SIRE Following a successful event for his offspring at the National Reining Breeders Classic (NRBC), the National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) is excited to announce that the NRHA Hall of Fame Inductee Gunner (AQHA Colonels Smoking Gun, APHA Colonels Smokingun) is the newest Nine Million Dollar Sire. Tim and Colleen McQuay of McQuay Stables Inc., Tioga, TX, own Gunnar. He is only the third sire to reach this milestone.

Twentieth Year Passes, Memories Remain At National Reining Breeders Classic THE NATIONAL REINING BREEDERS Classic (NRBC) is known for big payouts and meeting milestones.

During this show, Hollywoodstinseltown became National Reining Horse Association’s (NRHA) newest Million Dollar Sire through the success of ten of his offspring that entered the show.

Together, they earned more than $52,800 at the event, catapulting his offspring earnings over the million-dollar mark.

A second milestone was met, as Shawn Flarida became the NRBC’s first Million Dollar Rider. Flarida has a long list of wins with the NRBC including four Championship titles. He can boast having earnings of $1,011,159.27 from the NRBC Classic alone!

In the National Reining Breeders Classic’s historic twentieth year, the world’s most elite reiners battled it out for the coveted NRBC Open Champion Title. Andrea Fappani and Chic Dreamin scored 229 to win the championship and the $75,000 check.

The five-year-old stallion, by Magnum Chic Dream out of Skeets Red Dunit, is owned by Silver Spurs Equine.

Fappani said, “It never gets old to win anywhere, but especially here. It’s a special place. I have a special place in my heart, because this is where I marked a 236, which is still today the highest in NRHA history, so it’s a great place where you can really showcase your horse.”

Chicsdreamofdiamonds, a gorgeous palomino mare with a remarkably long, flowing mane, carried 19-year-old Jack Medows to win the Non Pro Classic Championship.

Chicsdreamofdiamonds is by Magnum Chic Dream and out of Princess In Diamonds. Magnum Chic Dream, owned by Jack and Viola Scott, is a NRHA Hall of Fame Four Million Dollar Sire by Smart Chic Olena and out of Sailin Barbee and in this landmark year, he is the sire of both the Open and Non Pro Champions.

Besides bragging rights, the pair earned the $30,000 check and a plethora of other prizes. It doesn’t sound like Medows plans to use his bragging rights, however, as he gives credit to others.

“My hat’s off to the mare and Fernando Salgado for helping me prepare,” Medows said. “All three of us really work as a good team. All week [Chicsdreamofdiamonds] has been real steady, really good-minded. I asked for more today, and she really stepped up and gave me her heart.”

Medows has had a lot of success with the mare, having won the 2016 National Reining Horse Association Non Pro Futurity Championship along with other big wins, but Medows says the $30,000 NRBC win is special.

“Between the prelims and here she really stepped up her turns. She’s a really good turner, but for some reason she goes in the show pen and she’s so relaxed that she almost dulls up a little bit, but today she really sparked in her turns, and when I loped her off she was so slow and so collected it was a really cool feeling,” Medows said. “[The win here at the NRBC] is so special and she deserves it, she’s such a good mare. I’m glad I stayed out of her way and let her do it.”

Cade McCutcheon of Tioga, TX, slid into a close Reserve Non Pro Championship, scoring a 223 on Custom Made Gun. Custom Made Gun is by Colonels Smokin Gun and out of Custom Made Dunit. The 16-year-old earned $15,750 for the win.

Trainer/driver Cassandra Adams was at the reins when the jawdropping champagne-colored mare won the blue ribbon in the Part Bred Friesian Carriage Driving class at the Fiesta Charity Horse Show in Burbank, CA. It’s no secret that our IFSHA horses are mesmerizing and alluring—not even proficient judges can resist the desire to experience the power and grace of the Friesian horse. Beverly and Mark McGovern’s six-year-old stallion, Klaas (Fridse 423 X Jasper 366), charmed the judges at the Spring Fling Horse Show at Texas Rose Horse Park. After winning Sport Horse In-Hand Champion with a score of 87.75, Armor Costume Champion, Halter Champion, and earning Overall High Point Champion for IFSHA and Friesian Horse Association of North America, USEF Judge Joanne Crockett asked if she could ride Klaas and the McGoverns happily obliged. 2. Pretty is as Pretty Does: This proverb, first shared to me by my grandmother, applies to horses and people. I have always believed that seeking the right horse is a lot like dating. It is easy to fall in love with that good-looking flashy horse or person, only to find out later while well into the relationship that he or she is unstable, unreliable, emotional, or dangerous. I am not suggesting that you should not want to find your horse or significant other attractive, but I am saying the other qualities, abilities, and skills are superior assets.

3. Start with the End in Mind By this statement, I mean that each person has a plan for his or her own riding goals and future. Looking for a horse that has the mind, athleticism, temperament, and training for your chosen task is important. Your new horse should also truly enjoy his or her future work. Each horse and rider team should be compatible in personality, riding experience, and future equestrian goals.

returning to riding after many dormant years, should never buy a young, green, or untrained horse. The rider’s safety is the most important component in purchasing a good horse as horseback riding is inherently a dangerous sport. I have met many people who were afraid of their own horse, a sure sign that the horse and rider are mismatched. If you are fairly new to riding, consider a teenage-horse with lots of experience. With the advances in veterinary medicine, these slightly older horses have 10-plus years of great, safe trail miles ahead to share with their owners.

They often bring knowledge, stable minds, less excitability, and a caretaker mentality.

5. Phone a Friend Always take a knowledgeable friend or trainer with you to evaluate a potential horse and send videos of potential horses to your knowledgeable horse-friends. This level-headed comrade’s job is to help evaluate the dream horse in a non-emotional, well informed way and talk you down from a potentially regretful purchase, or remind you of your goals and requirements for your new horse.

RECENTLY, I WAS FORTUNATE enough to take a cross-country trip in search of a quality gaited horse to purchase. My friend and mentor, Julie Dillon, and I travelled through nine states, and as we drove, the collective wisdom of my friends and family echoed in my head with tried and true adages for buying a great horse. I make no claims on superior knowledge in this area and in fact, many of these lessons, I have discovered through 15 years of personal experience.

We all fully know that our passion for riding comes with a hefty price tag.

This maxim applies in two categories. First, buy the best trained, most experienced horse you can afford.

The upfront cost of a horse is nothing compared to the long-term bills. Paying an extra thousand or two for the right, well-trained horse will save you much more in money and frustration down the line. Second, have the prospective horse thoroughly vetted before purchase. The $250 to $500 it costs to vet check a horse could help save thousands of dollars in the future.
