Industry Sources
Check out the Beef Cattle Institute at Kansas State University Ksubci.org
The Beef Cattle Institute utilizes collaborative multidisciplinary expertise to promote successful beef production through the discovery and delivery of actionable information and innovative decision support tools. This site can be your source for webinars, podcasts, calculators and chats on multiple industry topics. Check it out.
One such example is a financial calculator for prostaglandin injections to increase early pregnancy.
Beef Cattle Institute - Kansas State University - Bob L. Larson, DVM, PhD
One strategy to increase the number of cows becoming pregnant early in the breeding season is to give all cows a prostaglandin injection the first day of the breeding season.
This strategy may be beneficial, but it is important to recognize that the only cows that can benefit are the ones that have resumed fertile cycles by the start of the breeding season.
To determine if giving all cows an injection of prostaglandin is likely to create more income than it costs, please answer the questions below.
Before You Turn Out
Spring means turn-out time. ASA has a few recommendations to make your 2025 calf crop successful. Before you turn out, make sure all of your herd bulls, including walking bulls, have a DNA type on file. DNA submissions can be via a blood card, hair card, TSU or even semen. If you are not sure regarding the DNA status, send an email to sherry@salersusa.org regarding any details. Our highest priority as seedstock producers is to keep accurate pedigrees and the best insurance is to get parentage markers on all herd bulls.
AI Sires – Keep in mind, all bulls used artificially must have an AI permit on file. Even if you own the bull, the permit is necessary to register future progeny conceived artificially. An AI permit includes; complete parentage verification and a Beta Mannosidosis test or test result clean via parentage. It would be best for all of those herd bulls to have a genomic test on file. Genomic tests are $45 each and will not only give you genomic enhanced EPDs, resulting in higher accuracy EPD, but will also verify parentage.
Cost of giving prostagaldin per cow (drug cost + labor & facility cost)
Each of those herd bulls has a dam, so be sure to grab the dam sample as you run them through and give those spring shots. ASA talks to breeders each year wanting to sell semen on the great, now proven herd bull, but without the dam on file, that will never be possible, so be sure and grab those dam DNA samples. If you have sold a herd sire

prospect this spring to a seedstock producer, also remember that the seedstock producer will need a dam DNA sample on file to use semen or sell semen on the purchased bull, so be sure to keep that in mind and collect those dam samples for your fellow purebred producer.
Salers DNA samples for genomic or parentage are all sent to the American Salers Association. You can find the DNA forms on the Salers website. Beta Mannosidosis testing forms are also available on the website but Beta Mann tests are sent direct to the Michigan State Veterinary Diagnostic Lab. Testing samples include a TSU, blood or hair card or semen (not frozen). Breeders must send those Beta Mann results to the American Salers Association for entry into the ASA Database.
Spring ASA Inventory Submissions
ASA Inventory lists have been sent out to each breeder. The complete inventory for 2024 is due back to the ASA office by the end of March with the first half of the inventory payment. The inventory sheets are self-adjusting for each breeder. All breeding age females born on or before May 15, 2022, in the membership will be on the inventory listing. For those dams no longer in the herd, just mark the disposal code on the sheet and the date, adjust $11 per cow removed then return to the ASA office with the first ½ of the payment. Be sure to check the box if a paper registration form is still needed. ASA will only send out a paper registration form if one is requested.
Registrations can also be done through the online system or via an electronic spreadsheet. Keep in mind your inventory fees cover everything a breeder needs for the 2024 progeny including all of the performance data from birth through yearling information. The fee includes the calf registration and the first-time transfer of the progeny, even if years later. ASA encourages everyone to turn in complete performance data of every calf born in 2024, even if they are not registered. Complete performance data only makes the Salers database stronger and provides more information for our commercial customers.
Obituary - Bill Jasperson
William R. (Bill) Jasperson, husband, father, grandpa, great-grandpa, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on January 29, 2024. Bill was born September 16, 1937 in Spanish Fork, Utah to Orval Thomas Jasperson and Grace Robinson Jasperson. He is the second of three children and the only son. Bill was raised in Goshen, Utah where he attended elementary and junior high school. He attended Payson High School where he graduated in 1955. He attended Trade Tech (now Utah Valley University) where he was certified in Auto Mechanics which is something he loved, and did as a lifelong
trade and hobby. He also enjoyed watching the National Finals Rodeo, Nascar and Indy car racing.
Bill married Donna Kay Jasperson from Mona on August 9, 1958 in Mona, Utah. They were later sealed in the Manti, Utah LDS Temple March 11, 1964 and together they raised six children.
Bill worked for Van Gas delivering propane in Utah for a short time and was transferred to Idaho where they moved in 1960. They lived there for about a year and when Bill’s father passed away, they returned to Goshen where he dedicated his life to the success of the family ranch. He was on the forefront of farming and ranching; he always had the newest irrigation systems and top cattle genetics. Bill spent time building his own boat and racecar, and fixing farm equipment and anything else that was broken.
Bill was elected the Mayor of Goshen in 1969 where he served the city of Goshen for several years. During that time he met and made many acquaintances, friends, and lifelong connections. He served on the Goshen Volunteer Fire Department, and served on the board of the Goshen Irrigation Company and then as President being involved since 1965.
He was a founding member of the Utah Salers Association and is the reason Jasperson Cattle are in the Salers business today. Bill purchased is first registered heifers in 1984 from Roy Moore and Ai’ed 40 of them to Jet (#1). Those heifers then calved in the spring of 1985 and were the beginning of the Jasperson Cattle Salers operation.
Bill was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints where he served in many callings. He served as a counselor in the Young Men’s program for over ten years. He also served as a counselor in the Elder’s Quorum and the Scouting program. He enjoyed serving as a home teacher and went regularly to visit and serve his families. He was Christ-like and selfless at every point in his life. He dedicated all of his time to serving and giving to others, especially his own children.
Bill was a wonderful patriarch, husband, and father to his family. He loved Donna and each one of his children and grandchildren more than anything. There isn’t anything he wouldn’t have done and hasn’t done for his children. They were his life and he was dedicated to guiding them, teaching them, and helping them in many aspects of their lives.
Bill is survived by his wife Donna and his six children; Brent, Gregg (Tamie), Jill Hammond (Wally), Chad (Shantele), Jimmy (Amy) and Gina Wheeler (Elias), 20 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents (Orval, Grace), his two sisters (Sue Ann, Janet), and daughterin-law (Robyn).
