Salers Cattle Drive

Excitement is in the air for Salers producers with the announcement of the joint genomic research project between ASA and Neogen. At the time of this publication nearly 1,700 female DNA sample have been sent in for the Salers Cattle Drive project. The breed is well positioned to be rewarded for our true genetic capabilities. We encourage those producers, who have yet to participate, to take advantage of the program and collect those DNA samples the next time the cow herd runs through the chute. This will be a powerful tool to improve genetic predictions in females and will help both the seedstock and the commercial producer.

SalerS

Cattle Drive

This joint project with Neogen is quite simple; it provides complete genomic testing for females at a substantially reduced price. The tests costs $25 each for the entire herd which includes a genomic profile and parentage. Breeders who submit cow weights and body condition scores receive an additional $3 off per test which amounts to a 51% savings off of the regular $45 rate.

Phenotype is still important

DNA testing will never replace the need to record and submit actual phenotypes. Here are a few tips….

• Report every calf in your herd.

• If a cow did not calve, report the reason.

• Every calf should be weighed at birth.

• Weight and report the DEAD ones, too.

• Weigh all the calves at weaning.

• Weigh the ones you plan to cull

Merits of Participation

1. Increasing the accuracy of low accuracy EPDs is a primary benefit. Cows don’t have enough progeny in a lifetime to even reach moderately accurate EPDs, but genotyping substantially increases that accuracy value.

For simplicity’s sake, it might be easier to think about accuracy in terms of numbers of progeny, or more commonly called progeny equivalents. A progeny equivalent is the number of progeny it takes for an animal without genomics to have the same BIF accuracy as an animal with genomics but no progeny. If you genotype a calf at spring vaccination time, the birth weight EPD on that calf will be as accurate as a sire that has had birth weights recorded on 22

calves. So, you will know more about that 3-monthold calf than you do a sire who is at least two years old. The table below depicts the progeny equivalents for several traits

2. Correct Parentage Errors

It is estimated that about 7% of all pedigrees have a parentage error somewhere in the pedigree. Since parentage is part of the Cattle Drive Project, this testing will provide the opportunity to find and correct unknown pedigree errors which will also result in more accurate performance predictions. It also makes future parentage issues easier to address. Once parentage is on file, all a producer will need to do is test the current crop.

3. 3. Ability to test additional traits at the same time. Interested in homozygous polled or coat color testing, these can be added on to the research project genomic test.

Criteria for Participation

• For $25, submit for genotyping, at least 90% of the cows on the active inventory. This can also include replacements heifers not yet on the inventory.

• $3 rebate. If body condition scores and cow weights are submitted at weaning, rebates will be issued as a credit to the membership account once data requirements have been met and verified. Yearling heifers will not qualify for the rebate.

• DNA samples must be submitted to ASA using Allflex Tissue Sampling Units (TSUs). Payment must be provided in full with the submission of samples.

• Cows must be recorded in the ASA database and should have EPDs in order for the test to be beneficial.

• Additional trait testing, such as coat color and

horned/polled is available on these samples at the regular bundled price, as long as it’s requested at the time of submission.

• Calves born in the current project year can also participate in the project as long as 85% of the calves are submitted, based on the active enrolled females. Additional trait testing such as coat color and horned/polled tests are available at the regular bundled price as long as they are requested at the time of submission.

• Once a member has submitted 90% of mature cows for genotyping, they will be eligible to submit replacement heifers annually at the research price as long as Neogen continues to offer research genotyping each year.

• This is a research project collaboration with special research prices and rebates which are only offered provided the above criterial are met and only for the duration of the project.

Obituary - Sherry Hartley

It is with great sadness for the American Salers Association to announce the passing of Sherry K. Hartley on August 9, 2023. Sherry Hartley was a valuable member of the American Salers Association office team from October 25, 2000, to her retirement in April of 2021. Salers breeders will remember her warm voice on the phone answering breeder questions for the 21-year time span.

She was born January 21, 1939, as Sherry K Sherman. She and her husband Larry led an active lifestyle. They were both licensed airline pilots, and at one time even owned an airport. She will be missed greatly by the American Salers Association staff, her friends and family. May she rest in peace!

Obituary - Neal Feist

Neal Joseph Feist was born on January 13, 1934 near Velva, ND to Joe and Ruth (Olson) Feist. He was raised on a farm near Velva. He attended Velva School and graduated valedictorian of his class in 1952. Neal was active in FFA, Football, Basketball, and Baseball. He furthered his education (desiring a career in engineering) at Minot State University where he played football until health conditions prevented him from doing so.

Neal married his high school sweetheart, Virginia Fry, on February 20, 1954 at Oak Valley Lutheran Church in Velva. They made their home on the East edge of Velva where they raised their family of five. He had a gift to see a vision and the desire and drive to make it happen through his strong

work ethic, perseverance, and self-discipline.

Neal owned and operated Feist Processing, a meat processing business in Velva. In 1966, he started a similar business in Minot, called Dakota Meats. Neal eventually sold that business to Cloverdale Meats in 1980 and managed the plant for them until he retired in the spring of 2006. He went on to help his sons farm and ranch until the summer of 2022.

Neal was a member of Oak Valley Lutheran Church and enjoyed attending the three nearby country churches, and most recently, the United Methodist Church of Velva. He was an avid Velva Aggie Booster and very supportive of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren in all of their many activities. Neal remained community minded his entire life in both Velva and Minot as a judge for many FFA & 4-H events. Never one to shy away from an endeavor, Neal was instrumental in bringing the Salers Cattle Breed to the United States in the 1970’s. He was a humble man who gave generously of his time, talents, and treasures. He believed in God, family, friends, country, education, and in working hard. He loved nature, farming, ranching, and sports.

Neal’s loving family includes children: Dawn (Greg) Haga of Velva, Beth (Joe) Stenvold of Minot, Nita (Randy) Effertz of Velva, David (Michele) Feist of Velva, and Brad (Janyce) Feist of Velva; grandchildren: Mandy (Tyler) Gronli, Seth Gaugler, BriAnn (Brett) Ramberg, Dustin Stenvold, Brittney (Rob) Roehrich, Danielle (Reid) Hanson, Brittany Feist, Kaitlin Feist, Bo (Jess) Feist, and Jami Feist; great grandchildren: Sloan Gronli, Hayden and Huck Ramberg, Avery Hanson, Blake and Emma Feist; siblings: Ramona Cain, Donovan (Margie) Feist, and Curt (Bonnie) Feist; in-laws: Mary Feist, Janet Fry, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

AMERICAN SALERS 9

M oving F orward with M arketing

As we approach the fiftieth year of Salers cattle in the United States, it is important to ask this: how will the breed continue to grow? How do we expand the market for Salers cattle? The answer lies not with association promotion, but with individual marketing. Cattlemen are, of course, more preoccupied with feeding and immediate care in the day-to-day. The sale is nine months away, so why worry now? However, we all know that the ultimate goal in raising cattle is to sell them, and the only way to make all that work worth it is to develop an effective marketing strategy and start it as early as possible. This might seem like a daunting task but remember: you do not need to be a salesman. You just have to tell your story.

So, how do we grow through marketing?

Presentation! Professional pictures and videos are of utmost importance in the digital era. However, the services of a professional photographer or videographer will not be nearly as effective if your cattle do not look appealing. Conditioning is key, and your cattle should be, essentially, showready on the day the photographer visits your outfit. Additionally, you should not only be photographing your sale cattle. Your herd

bulls and your ranch are key parts of your story. Your potential buyers will want to know where your cattle come from; they want to know you. Your photographs help tell your story.

However, buyers are not just going to come to you because you have nice pictures. You must go to them. There are many farm shows and cattlemen’s conventions at which a seedstock producer can set up a booth and meet potential customers. This is one of the areas where high-quality photographs are key. Scenic ranch pictures not only serve as the backdrop to your booth but also as a conversation starter and a way to draw in passersby. A tablecloth and pop-up banners serve the same purpose. Again, let your photographs tell your story, and let your story be your salesman.

Good-looking, easy-to-read brochures and business cards are another important part of the seedstock producer’s booth. People want to hold a printed object.

Additionally, consider investing in giveaway items. Ink pens are, of course, a cheap and common promotional item. If you are willing to spend the money, perhaps give away a larger and handier item such as a rattle paddle or a knife sharpener. Either way, the goal of a physical object is to remind your buyers as often as possible that you exist and are ready to serve them. Another option for a giveaway is offering a sale credit, where you give a potential buyer a certain dollar amount off the price of an animal if they attend your sale.

At last, be sure that your potential buyer fills out a registration card with their contact information, including both their email and physical mailing address. Registration cards are your connection to the buyer. It does not matter if you talked to an individual for ten minutes and shook their hand. If you do not have a way to contact them, you will not see them again.

WINTER 2024 10

Once you have established a line of communication with a potential buyer, use it. Mail out flyers and sale catalogs. Print media is still the king; it is trusted and valued because it is a tangible object. Do not be afraid to spend money on your print items. A flyer or card on heavy cardstock projects a feeling of sturdiness and reliability. If you send a potential buyer a quality printed product, they will naturally assume that the other things you have to offer them are quality as well. Flyers should also be posted in any communal gathering space where potential buyers might go, like a coffee shop, feed store, or gas station.

Print items aside, it is extremely important to be online in the modern era. However, it needs to be understood that a digital presence and a social media presence are two different things. Social media, in general, is more casual than a website. You can maintain your connections—which is very important—through social media, but you cannot truly inform in-depth. A well-kept, routinely updated website should be the information hub for your outfit. A website can be built and maintained in-house. You do not necessarily have to worry about hiring out web design. Website-building platforms such as Wix, Squarespace, or WordPress offer easy-to-use, prebuilt templates. Domain names can be purchased and maintained for less than one hundred dollars per year.

Once flyers and sale catalogs have all been mailed and the website and social media accounts have been updated, it is time for your sale. Remember that you have options in this day and age. Private treaty and consignment sales are still popular and allow you to interact one-on-one with your buyers, but online sales can be just as effective. This may take a year or two of trial and error and figuring out what works best for your outfit.

After the sale, you need to maintain a relationship with your buyers. Herd visits are a wonderful way to accomplish this. People want to show off their cattle, and you get an opportunity to see your cattle thriving in a new environment.

This is an area where an active social media presence is exceptionally helpful. You can share the daily life on your ranch and make your buyers feel like they are a part of your life. Thank-you cards after a sale and greeting cards around the holidays are also a great way to make your buyers feel appreciated.

As we move forward into the next fifty years, we must focus on individual marketing to foster the breed’s growth and expand its market. This can be achieved by presenting well-conditioned, professionally-photographed cattle in print, online, and at trade shows; cultivating an online presence for your operation, through both a website and social media; and maintaining a lasting, personal relationship with cattle buyers. Again, you do not have to be a salesman to effectively sell your cattle. You only have to tell your story.

Versatility

Salers & Optimizer

Signature Traits

Fertility

It all stats with the female getting bred. Without this essential foundation, cowherd profitability is unattainable. Research shows and cattlemen agree, Salers & Optimizer cattle have the inherent fertility to get bred and calve on time year after year.

Cow Longevity

How does a cow get to be old? By calving without a fuss, raising a big calf and coming in bred on-time, year after year. They do it by having sound udders, feet and structure. They possess unmatched foraging ability by having the willingness to cover rough country with better grazing distribution and range utilization, even in higher altitudes. And they do it by having hte mothering instinct that turns even first calf heifers into nurturing mothers at calving. These are all signature traits of the Salers & Optimizer female.

Calf Survivability

The easy-calving shape of the Salers & Optimizer calf and the larger pelvic area of the female just comes with the cattle. Newborn calves get up and are sucking fast, even in tough weather conditions.

Bull Durability

Those who use them know - Salers & Optimizer bulls are energetic, agile breeders who have the breeding stamina to service more cows year after year. These cattle are sound, sure-footed and travel high country with inherently low incidence of brisket disease.

Gentle Disposition

Over 25 years of selection pressure for disposition in Salers & Optimizer cattle have resulted in a steep genetic trend for improved docility. Today’s Salers & Optimizer cattle are bred to be quiet and easy to handle.

Why Salers & Optimizer?

Calving Ease

“Salers are low maintenance, low labor cattle. That’s why we love them, they are trouble-free cattle. They calve without a fuss and the calves get up and get sucking fast. We also appreciate the general hardiness of Salers and Optimizer cattle.” Tim Erbele - Streeter, N.D.

Profit

“Using Optimizer bulls allows us to take advantage of heterosis and get the full value of the calving ease, calf vigor, fertility, milk and mothering ability that Salers genetics pu into our cowherd. Generating our replacements from Optimizer crossed with Angus gives us an ideal sized cow for our environment. We’ve sold our Salers/Angus cross calves to the same feedyard for 25 years and they keep coming back for them year after year.”

Longevity

“The Salers cow is tough and resilient. They have better feet and legs, are more resistant to pinkeye and definitely have more longevity. We have 15 and 16 year old cows that are Salers. They are still sound and producing. We are getting an extra 2-3 years of production - that’s an extra 2-3 calves to sell over the other breeds.” Bob Kassing - Mt. Sterling, Ill.

Disposition

“We work everything on foot in the corrals. We train the heifers as calves to come when you call for them. It makes life a lot easier. We spend more time with cows following us than us following them. It takes less people to move them when they follow you, rather than when you have to push them.” James Plasek - David City, Neb.

o ne M ore Y ear

We cull our cows most every fall, There are times you nearly bawl. When your best cow, you were hopin’, To have a bull, comes in open.

Should I keep her or should I sell, What else is wrong I’m here to tell. Because she’s open, she has to go, But there are times I’d like to know:

If the lump on the jaw, or just a bad eye, Can’t I give her one more try?

So I thought about, if it were me, Would I see things so differently?

Because I wear glasses so that I can see, And I have a brace on my right knee. I take Flomax so that I can pee, And a big blue pill for my ED.

I have hearing aids so that I can hear, That only work if you are near.

My heart has had a three bypass, And my colonoscopies were a gas.

Doc cleaned up spurs on my left shoulder, He said he’d do the right when I’m older.

Doc’s worked on my right thumb’s grip, So when I pick up a glass, it won’t slip.

I’ve had hernia surgery, both left and right, And I still get up six times at night.

I have the shakes and they’re the one’s, The Doc says comes with Parkinson’s.

He ran some tests and was satisfied, My Parkinson’s was caused by a pesticide. There are times when there’s lots of stress, I’m a worrier, so I am a mess.

I take a pill so I don’t get gout, Indigestion is what it’s all about. I went to the Doctor, two times in a row, And I was just praying for a status quo.

But the Doctor said on my update, I now have cancer, in my prostate. Being concerned, I asked my wife, How much longer can she take the strife? She said if I kept the dishes done, And trash in the barrel and shells in the gun, Keep the lawn mowed and gas in the car, And keep my hands out of the cookie jar.

I need to make sure that the cows are fed, The fences fixed and paint on the shed, The hay is put up and the barn is clean, If I do all that, she won’t be mean. But the very first time she wipes my rear, She’s loading me up and I’m out of here.

It’s off to town to the nursing home, One with locks so I can’t roam.

So, 493, I think your eye will be fine; Your lump might be an old piece of twine. And 493, though our time maybe near, I think we’ll both try, for one more year.

2023 ASA Gold Dam & Sire Listing

The ASA Gold Dam and Sire program recognizes Salers breeders’ top producing cows within a herd based on number of calves weaned per cow exposed and weaning weight of calves. Cows and sires can be recognized from any environment because the list is based on within herd performance.

To become a Gold Dam, cows must meet a tough selection criteria.

• Gold Dams must have had a calf before they are 2.3 years of age and calve within a 395-day calving interval which allows the producers to calve heifers earlier than the main cow herd.

GOLD DAMS

DEFFINBAUGH

• Dam’s must have a minimum of three natural (non-ET) calves with an average weaning ratio greater than 105.

• These are the top quality, most efficient cows in a herd. Only the tope 2% of the registered cows make the Golden Dam list. Gold Sires – Salers bulls can earn the title of Gold Sires by Siring five or more Gold Dams. Gold Dams and Sires can be identified in Salers pedigrees by an (*) behind each name in the pedigree.
