Welcome The School of Mechanical, Aerospace and Automotive Engineering aims to provide excellent teaching coupled with an outstanding student experience.

This approach has shaped the culture of our forward-thinking Faculty of Engineering, Environment and Computing, with its inspirational ÂŁ50m building housing modern equipment and student facilities.

We aim to prepare and guide our students towards their first professional position and future careers. Our strong tradition of business-focused research is reflected in the important relationships we have developed with companies such as Emirates, Jaguar Land Rover, Airbus, Rolls-Royce, Unipart and Birmingham International Airport.

Working closely with the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, the Royal Aeronautical Society, the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport and the Institute of Engineering Technology, the school is proud to be delivering professionally relevant, up-to-date courses, the majority of which are accredited.

UK City of Culture 2021 Coventry University is very much at the heart of the city’s rich history as well as it’s exciting future. The continually evolving cityscape has lots to offer, including a wide variety of places to eat, drink, shop and relax.

UK City of Culture Coventry is UK City of Culture 2021. This accolade, awarded by the Department of Culture, Media and Sport, means the world will be watching our city in 2021. With Coventry University being a principal partner of the successful bid, there could be so many opportunities for students to get involved, making this a great time to study in Coventry.

From ribbon weaving and watchmaking, to being the centre of the motor industry, our city has constantly re-invented itself. Coventry University is well placed to contribute to, and benefit from, the wider cultural developments within the city.

We’re already a multicultural city, with the university welcoming students from more than 160 countries, but we can’t wait to see what being UK City of Culture 2021 will bring for us.

Cultural experiences Whatever you’re passionate about, Coventry has something for you.

For music lovers, Coventry hosts the annual Godiva Festival, one of the UK’s biggest family music festivals, that’s seen the likes of Biffy Clyro, Kasabian, The Enemy, Jake Bugg and Example taking to the stage in War Memorial Park. There’s also a range of live music venues including the Golden Cross, the Kasbah and `The Tin’ Music and Arts.

There are some impressive exhibition spaces too including the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum which is an award-winning venue for celebrating the city’s culture and history, and the best part is that it’s right next to the university in University Square, opposite the iconic Coventry Cathedral.

If you’re interested in theatre, the Belgrade Theatre hosts an exciting mix of experiences ranging from locally-produced performances, comedy nights and touring West End shows. There are smaller venues too, like the Shop Front Theatre, a unique theatre space housed in a former fish and chip shop.

As the birthplace of the British motor industry, Coventry is also home to the recently redeveloped Transport Museum, which currently houses the fastest car in the world and a 4D Land Speed Record simulator. In addition, the city is home to MotoFest Coventry, an annual motoring festival featuring motorsport demonstrations and live music.

Sport Coventry was named European City of Sport 2019, with the vision of promoting and celebrating the benefits of sport and there’s plenty to offer sports fans.

The Ricoh Arena, situated at the edge of the city, is a modern development which houses a 32,000-seat football and rugby stadium. It played host to London 2012 Olympic football matches and is home to the Wasps Rugby Club and Wasps Netball, which frequently offers volunteering opportunities to our students.

Other sports teams within the city include Coventry Rugby Football Club, Coventry Bears rugby league club - and the Coventry Blaze ice hockey team, which is housed in the city’s Skydome complex, with which Coventry Business School has a particularly close relationship, with players studying with us, and our students frequently volunteering at games and other events.

Global opportunities Opportunities to travel and/or work in the UK and overseas are a real benefit of choosing Coventry University. We aim to help you stand out from the crowd when you graduate by offering a range of overseas experiences throughout your degree.

Field trips You will have the opportunity to go on a field trip each year to help broaden your subject knowledge, put the theories you have learnt into practice, network, and experience other cultures. Some trips are free of charge, while others are subsidised. Our students have been on field trips within the UK and all over the globe, with recent visits to Holland, Belgium, Germany, Dubai, USA, Oman and China.

Placement/study abroad year Many of our school’s courses offer the opportunity to undertake a fee free, optional additional year gaining experience on a work placement, in the UK or abroad, or studying overseas. Previous students have secured and successfully completed work placements with prestigious organisations such as Rolls-Royce, Avast Software, BMW and TATA Technologies.

Collaborative Online International Learning projects

These opportunities can help you to understand how the knowledge and experiences you gain during your course are applied in a reallife setting, whilst also making invaluable connections that should help to bolster your employment prospects.

Global Leaders Programme (GLP) This exciting, members-only programme aims to develop industry leaders of the future. Expand your global skills in our specialist workshops, experience new cultures and different countries, countries, and undertake behind-the-scenes industry visits around the world. You will also be able to take advantage of opportunities to meet global leaders, which have in the past included networking events with the likes of Google, Microsoft and Facebook. This programme is optional and involves an additional fee.

Collaborative Online International Learning is the term that we use at Coventry University to refer to ‘virtual mobility’ experiences. These are included within the curriculum and provide an opportunity to interact with international universities and industry professionals. You can use these experiences to develop your inter-cultural competences and digital skills, while working with others on subject specific learning tasks or activities.

Participating in such projects can be an important part of your university experience and a helpful step towards becoming a global graduate with excellent intercultural competence and digital fluency, both of which can provide you with the opportunity to improve your employability prospects.

A recent project included aerospace students undertaking a full design and build cycle of an Unmanned Aircraft System, capable of delivering 21kg bags of flour as humanitarian aid. Students had the opportunity to interact with peers and mentors from industry across the world. Students also engaged at the fly-off event with national and international teams.

Placements We know what a big difference work experience and placements can make to your career prospects. Our current students agree, with an increasing number opting to broaden their horizons through a year-long placement in their third year, or short placements throughout their course. These opportunities could help you to gain the valuable experience needed when entering the competitive employment market.

In 2018/19, more than 380 students from the faculty were placed across a wide range of industries and companies.

Add+vantage modules Our Talent Team works closely with our academics to ensure that employability skills are embedded into our curriculum. Most of our courses include the university’s Add+vantage scheme. This scheme allows you to complete career-focused modules at each stage of your course as part of our employability programme.

Modules include a range of work experience and career development activities. They cover topics ranging from foreign languages and entrepreneurship, through to modules led by employers including Jaguar Land Rover and Severn Trent Water; all designed to help you gain relevant skills to take into your future career.

Our focus is on learning that is led by experience, with the aim of giving you the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the practical application of what you are taught.

We are proud of our teaching achievements, which saw us awarded Gold in the Teaching Excellence Framework 2017, the Government’s first major assessment of teaching quality in universities, and also saw us awarded maximum 5 Stars for both our teaching and our facilities (QS Stars 2020). The Guardian University Guide 2020 has ranked Coventry University 3rd in the UK for ‘Mechanical engineering’.

Facilities The High Performance Engineering Centre, sited within our £50m faculty building, houses an impressive range of industry standard equipment.

Facilities for students studying our Mechanical, Aerospace and Automotive Engineering courses include:

Coventry University is also home to the UK’s first ‘Faculty on the Factory Floor’, the Institute for Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering (AME). This is a collaboration between Coventry University and Unipart Manufacturing Group, providing students with training in the Unipart best practice manufacturing methodology and seeking to offer the opportunity to work with engineering professionals.

Opening in late 2020, our new Beatrice Shilling building is the third building to be used by the faculty. The four-storey building provides a range of learning spaces, all designed around a full height central atrium configured to promote student and staff collaboration.

Professional accreditations The majority of our courses have been formally recognised by professional bodies, which means the courses have been reviewed and tested to ensure they reach a set standard. In some instances, studying on an accredited course can give you additional benefits such as exemptions from professional exams (subject to availability, fees may apply).

Research-informed teaching At the School of Mechanical, Aerospace and Automotive Engineering, we seek to deliver an education that is informed by research, allowing our degrees to cover some of today’s most challenging issues and the solutions we are finding for them. This approach seeks to empower our graduates to become future global engineering and management professionals. our research expertise ranges from the development of autonomous, electric and hydrogen fueled vehicles, renewable energy, human factors in aviation, laser shot peening, composite materials, welding and joining, drone technology and applications and 3D printing applications.

Our annual summer research internship programme aims to provide further opportunities for shortlisted students to work closely with researchers on existing and new research projects. The programme supports students in gaining invaluable experience in a research environment while getting paid. Please note that this programme may be subject to an application process and spaces may be limited.

Learning support The university’s Centre for Academic Writing (CAW) is an innovative teaching and research centre that aims to help you to become a better academic writer. Through workshops and one-to-one sessions, you can access the advice and guidance you need on topics such as essay writing, reports, dissertations and theses.

This service is free to all students.

The university’s Mathematics and Statistics Support Centre, sigma, is available to all students, and aims to provide free support to improve your maths and statistics. The centre runs a drop-in service, as well as hosting online resources, workshops and one-to-one sessions.

If you need any additional academic support with your course during your studies, you can visit the THETA Centre for a drop-in session on the ground floor of the faculty’s Engineering, Environment and Computing Building. All our academics spend time in the THETA Centre. They are available for you to drop-in and ask for further support with course materials, exam revision and tutorial queries which may not have been covered in formal timetables sessions.

Expert staff Staff within the school are drawn from a variety of backgrounds and are internationally diverse. You could be taught by staff with professional experience in a range of industries, as well as by staff who are research active. This diversity can give you the opportunity to gain fresh perspectives on the topics you study, as well as helping you to understand how skills and knowledge can be applied to real-world situations.

The Applied Mechanical Engineering top-up degree is designed to enhance your existing engineering skills and qualifications and in turn, your career. The course is aimed at those who have chosen a more vocational route and have a Foundation Degree, DipHE, HND or equivalent in engineering.

Qualified mechanical engineers are in great demand. Successful completion of this honours degree could open up a wide range of careers in many engineering disciplines and prepare you to apply for further postgraduate study.

We aim to help you build upon and ‘top up’ your previous qualification and experience with activity-led, hands-on learning, giving you the opportunity to further develop your engineering and mathematical knowledge, understanding, management and analysis skills in a professional manner to problem solve engineering problems.

Automotive Engineering

Automotive manufacturers and designers are using cutting-edge technology to solve the transport and sustainability issues of the future.

Focusing on how engineering is used in automotive applications, this course enables you to qualify first at bachelor’s degree level, and then, if you choose to follow the MEng pathway, at master’s degree level. The MEng is ideal for those seeking to demonstrate additional knowledge and possible leadership positions in the development of new technologies and design of future vehicles.

The course aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the design criteria required to create a successful brand and product, setting you on the path to registering and practising as a Chartered Engineer, if you successfully complete master’s level study.

Engineering Business Management (top-up) Course information Engineering Business Management BSc (Hons) top-up UCAS code: HN1C www.coventry.ac.uk/ug/HN1C Study option: 1 year full-time Overview Successful completion of this course enables you to `top-up’ your existing qualification - an undergraduate diploma or equivalent in engineering or related fields - to the internationally-recognised `Honours’ degree. It is designed for UK, international and European students seeking management roles in technology-based business.

Building on your existing engineering skills, this final-year course will present the key aspects of managing a company in an engineering -based organisation and offer the latest in business management theory, e.g. strategic management, supply chain and logistics, quality management, project management and environmental management.

As a student member of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT), you will have access to the institute’s knowledge centre, which features traditional library and online facilities, as well as career support and access to the student hub. Your studies will take place between our £50m Engineering and Computing Building and the Institute for Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering (AME), based at Unipart’s Coventry site. This ‘Faculty on the Factory Floor’ allows you to experience technology on the manufacturing frontline, including robotic automation, forming, joining, analysis and simulation, metrology and product verification technology. Taught modules are applied immediately in a real factory setting and complimented by continual live experiences of how things are manufactured in real time.

Our professionally accredited courses aim to produce graduates with the versatility and depth of understanding to deal with new and unusual challenges in mechanical engineering, alongside the necessary imagination and creativity to innovate. If you are an aspiring industry leader, our MEng route provides the opportunity to develop advanced technical, application and leadership skills to meet the full academic requirements for Engineering Chartership.

Our High Performance Engineering Centre includes a full size Harrier Jet, a 20% scale model wind tunnel, automotive workshop, four-pot shaker rig, composites lab, metrology lab, three further simulators, a range of CNC machinery and a laser workshop.

Our courses aim to provide a route into many careers across the global engineering industry, from aerospace, automotive, rail and marine to construction, chemical and defence.

This course responds to the demand for motorsport engineers with strong analytical and problem-solving skills (MIA 2019) to ensure the industry remains at the cutting edge of innovation.

The course is designed to equip you with relevant, up-to-date skills and knowledge to work as a motorsport engineer. We also aim to provide you with a sound understanding of the commercial context of motorsport engineering. The MEng route is designed for high achieving students who wish to continue their studies to develop advanced technical, application and leadership skills.

Teaching is highly practical, focused on providing a thorough understanding of the fundamental principles of motorsport engineering and, more importantly, how this knowledge is applied in the industry. You will have the opportunity to work with staff on real-world problems from industry, commerce and research groups, as you would in professional practice.
