Yup, it’s cold. It’s Winnipeg. It’s winter. What did you expect? Granted, it has been a relatively mild winter thus far (isn’t that just like us, prefacing conversations about the weather with the sentiment that we really shouldn’t complain when the mercury dips just a little?). Because we live in one of the coldest cities in the world, we Winnipeggers are entitled to complain a bit. While we endure plugging in our cars, scraping them off, balancing across icy parking lots, wiping away teary eyes and snotcicles, avoiding road ruts and putting up with parking bans, there is an undeniable beauty to winter and all it brings. We recommend following our five rules to surviving the winter woes. Even though Winnipeg winters aren’t perfect, running this list on repeat just might help with the desire to rush away the season and cut some much-needed hibernation time short. See you in the spring!
1. Bundle up, buttercup. Start by investing in snow pants simply because it’s impossible to not feel like a kid again while wearing snow pants. While out in the snow, it is imperative to complete the following tasks at least once but multiple times is good for your health: make a snow angel, give a face wash (which will inevitably lead to a full-on snowball fight), build a snowman or construct a majestic fort. 2. Don’t stand around – standing around in the cold is, well, cold! Ice fish, skate, ski, snowmobile, snowshoe, toboggan, walk or whatever activity tickles your frosty fancy. Pick a winter activity and partake, you’ll feel great! 3. Spike your hot beverage. Treat yourself by adding a few drops of flavoured liquor to a coffee or hot chocolate now and again. Need we say more? 4. Get a Slurpee and drink it outside. Brainfreeze, shmainfreeze. It’s your duty as a citizen of the reigning Slurpee Capital of the World. 5. Make a pot of hearty, homemade soup. It’s easy, delicious and good for the soul. Be sure to share the warmth of a belly full of goodness with loved ones.

A
s many designers and decorators will tell you, the process of putting together an attractive and well-dressed room can be very much like putting together a great outfit. You start with some great foundation pieces, add in a few shots of colour and pattern, and consider various textures and sheens. Balance and proportion are important, and oftentimes we add focal points to play up attractive features, or use subtle tricks to camouflage and detract from problem areas. And while I may one day regret allowing comparisons to be drawn between myself and Duarto Feliz (one of New York City’s Top 5 Worst Decorators in The First Wives Club, who decreed that valances were the eyebrows of your windows), I will go on record declaring that lighting is the jewellery your home wears. And when it comes to jewellery, who doesn’t like a little bit of sparkle? When it comes to serious home jewellery, we’re talking chandeliers. Heck, even Mother Nature likes to decorate with her own version of drippy crystal chandeliers – just take a look at the icicles outside your window. But if there’s one things you need to know about chandeliers, it’s this: the ornate confections of faceted glass you imagine hanging over a formal dining room table are not the only type of chandelier. And while they can be gorgeous in the right spaces, they’re not suitable with all outfits. We all know there’s more than one type of earring, so just think of it this
way: while diamonds are a natural with evening wear, not all fashionistas can pull off 3” rhinestone drops with their infinity scarves and leggings. But let’s start at the beginning, long before sparkle became associated with lighting. The original chandeliers date back to Medieval times, and were simple wooden crosses that held candles aloft to light spaces. They were designed to be portable and, basic as they were, they were able to be moved between multiple rooms and were used to illuminate large spaces. By the late 1400s, more decorative forms of these candle holders began to be seen in houses of worship and in the homes of the upper classes, establishing the basis for their luxurious reputation. By the 18th century, these fixtures were commonly being referred to as chandeliers (appropriated from the French, which is derived from the Latin candelabrum). The carved and gilded wood frames were now giving way to frames of cast metal, which offered artisans the opportunity to craft large, strong and comparatively lightweight frames. It was also during this period that development in the production of glass allowed for lead crystal to be produced more economically, and thus the sparkle began to emerge as a defining characteristic of chandeliers. In Western Europe, the Bohemians became expert in the production of facetted crystal, producing chandeliers that exploded with stupendous light refraction. Neoclassical motifs with
classical proportions were popular, with particular styles developing in different regions (the Adams and Regency styles in England, the Montgolfiere in France). Meanwhile in Italy, the Venetians were producing spectacular coloured glass in Murano. Impossibly lightweight and delicate, the Murano handblown glass was itself both the frame and the decoration of these chandeliers, and typical designs riffed on intricate interpretations of nature, including leaves, flowers and fruits. Today, some of the most modern and breathtaking chandeliers are created using the same Murano techniques by artist Dale Chihuly, who’s spectacular pieces are found all over the globe. While the light source of chandeliers evolved from candles to gaslight to electricity, the overall styles remained much the same until the 20th century. More modern and streamlined versions began appearing as lighting design became more directly tied to particular periods of style (think of dining fixtures in Art Nouveau or Arts & Crafts homes – yes, those are chandeliers, too). While today the candelabra-style remains popular, contemporary chandeliers come in a multitude of design options: transitional styles with frosted glass shades and rubbed-bronze finishes, steampunk chandeliers of wrought iron with Edison bulbs, or über-modern LED-lit rings of matte aluminum and Swarovski are all options for your home… it just depends on its outfit.

PROfile is a chance to meet and get to know a local Winnipeg talent. HOW DID YOU END UP IN THE CAREER YOU HAVE CHOSEN? It seems like it took a while…After high school I studied art history at the U of Winnipeg. I soon realized that I was more interested in design and architecture so I studied for a year in Montreal at the UQAM (Université du Québec à Montréal). Unfortunately, the program out East wasn’t as challenging as I’d hoped for so I applied to the Faculty of Architecture back home here at the U of Manitoba. I graduated with my Bachelor of Environmental Design and was fortunate enough to find work in the interior design field (residential) even though my focus had been architecture. WHAT IS THE MOST CHALLENGING PROJECT YOU HAVE FACED TO DATE? Seeing as Harwood Design Builders specializes in renovations, every project comes with its own unique set of challenges ! More often than not,

when clients want open concept living spaces, the recurring challenge is how to deal with structure and mechanical once all the walls disappear. With older homes and previous methods of construction we never know what’s behind the walls until we open them up.. but it keeps everyone on their toes and forces us to get creative when it comes to problem solving. WHEN WOULD YOU DO IT YOURSELF AND WHEN WOULD YOU HIRE A PRO? If I had the option I’d always hire a pro – unless it involves painting, then I can likely do it myself. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE SPACE TO DESIGN? Kitchens and bathrooms, hands down. IF YOU COULD SPEND ONE WHOLE DAY WITH ANY DESIGNER IN THE WORLD WHO WOULD YOU SELECT? That’s a tough one, there are too many… I can’t choose right now. WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT MIXING CABINETRY IN KITCHEN PLANS. I.E. UPPERS DIFFERENT THAN LOWERS AND ISLANDS DIFFERENT THAN THE PERIMETER CABINETS? Well I definitely think it’s a trend. It depends on the layout and proportions of each project. If the kitchen is really small, keep it simple – one finish. If it’s really open and there’s room to play
around with the cabinetry in adjacent areas as well, two tones can break things up really nicely. There’s no magic rule. WHAT’S YOUR BIGGEST DESIGN PET PEEVE? Poor craftsmanship / finishing. WHEN PRESENTING A SOLUTION FOR A SPACE WHERE DO YOU THINK YOU SHOULD YOU SPEND AND WHERE SHOULD YOU SAVE? Regardless of the products, I believe there’s always an acceptable midway point that’s neither extravagant nor cheap. Personally, I like to spend on the areas that get the most wear and tear – that’s where you need the best quality: flooring, furniture, countertops… Saving on pieces that can easily get swapped out makes the most sense to me because it also gives you the ability to change the atmosphere of a space: lighting, accessories, hardware. rowth charts make a perfect and personal gift for a new baby or for measuring your own kids through the years. They become a cherished keepsake for each child and can easily make the move to a new home. As a design bonus, they fit great on that wall that nothing else seems to work on. These growth charts are not only quick to make, they are very inexpensive as well. For our boys, I used reclaimed wood from an old shed in our backyard; when designing gifts for others, I purchased six-foot fencing boards from Home Depot, costing a little over $2 each.

First, take a look at the height of your baseboards and how high you want to hang your growth chart (remember, your little one’s feet will be flat on the floor with their back to the chart). For my project, I started 7 inches up from the floor. Using a measuring tape and black pen, mark a short line at every inch. To indicate each foot mark, make a slightly longer line. I prefer using a pen because it is crisp and accurate. I have tried painted lines and it becomes tedious and imperfect. I used cardstock to make a 1” pattern, marking the length of the lines I wanted. For each of those marks you made, extend them to their actual length all the way down the board. When you get to each foot, draw them in slightly longer and thicker. There is no right or wrong length, only what looks good to you.

There are many examples on Pinterest to draw inspiration from. Next, I chose a stain that was not too dark; after all, you want to be able to see what you write on afterwards. I painted just one coat of stain for this reason. At Michael’s, I purchased a sticker package of numbers and letters in cute colours and patterns. You can choose black to make them appear more “ruler-like.” Starting from the bottom, add a “1” to the one-foot marker and work your way up to a “6” at the six-foot marker. For simplicity, I put an initial in the upper left corner to distinguish which child it is for, but you can add full names, birthday, etc. To finish, add the hanger on the back and mount the chart, matching the one-foot marker one foot up from the floor.

t always brings a smile to my face when clients with older homes are adamant about infusing their renovation with the character and charm that would’ve been inherent to the space long ago. One of our main goals in styling this galley kitchen was to make it feel as though it could’ve been original to the house. Of course, when investing in a remodel certain elements, such as efficient appliances, proper lighting and smart storage solutions, require to be updated and cannot be overlooked. The Tudor-style brick house, centrally located on prime riverfront property, boasts a stunning backyard garden just a few steps away from the kitchen and adjacent sunroom. a point of inspiration for the homeowners; at almost every opportunity, natural materials were favored. While the look of marble counters was sought after, the upkeep and softness of the stone was a deterrent. A dramatic grey-veined slab of Super White quartzite was a welcome alternative that proved to be much more stain and scratch resistant. Coved shaker profiles paired with a fairly intricate crown moulding provides textural interest to the neutral cabinets. Classic white millwork brightens up the windowless room and acts as a blank canvas to let the more pronounced design elements shine. Handpicking the reclaimed cream and grey toned bricks was a particularly unique part of this project! This custom veneered wall application coordinated effortlessly with the existing fireplace surround and exterior of the house making it seem like it had always been. Aged metal finishes, warm rich tones, textured paintable wallpaper and the elaborate kitchen faucet are some of the smaller details that complete this old-world look. Contemporary, sleek and open-concept designs certainly have their place. However, as a designer, having the chance to create a layered, timeless look can be quite appealing. It’s refreshing to collaborate on projects that stay true to the style of the home. ueen Elsa captivated us with the beauty and opulence of her Frozen kingdom on screen, and now Winnipeg has enchanted the world by creating its own magnificent winter wonderland in real life. The Great Ice Show, a visually-stunning spectacle featuring dozens of statues, slides and structures now on display at The Forks, was the work of 50 specially-trained Chinese artisans, each with decades of experience working with ice in sub-zero conditions. The visiting sculptors perfected their craft at the Harbin International Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival in Harbin, China – the largest ice festival in the world. The one-month long event features four theme ice parks and attracts 10 to 15 million people annually. Winnipeg’s inaugural ice festival was modelled after Harbin. In the planning stage for four years, the Great Ice Show was born out of a discussion between local hoteliers Andy Zhao, general manager of the Hampton Inn by Hilton Winnipeg Airport, Paul Kostas, owner of Humphry Inn & Suites, and Vivian Jiao, general manager of Humphry

Inn & Suites. The trio wanted to make over Winterpeg’s frosty image, turning its notoriously cold months into a cultural advantage and creating an important winter tourist destination in the process. They invested their own money upfront to put on the ice show. Since arriving at Christmas, the Chinese sculptors worked around the clock to saw, carve and shave large-scale works of art into 250-kilogram blocks of ice. Originally, the ice was going to be harvested directly from the Red River, but thanks to the late freeze-up, it had to be trucked in from Birds Hill Park. Gliding through the collection of crystalline ice sculptures, visitors will marvel at the 40-foot replica of the Manitoba Legislature, an assortment of life-sized figures and majestic creatures, as well as engage with a number of interactive igloo mazes, winding toboggan slides, bumper cars and the 600-square foot ice bar. The intricately-designed sculptures combine opaque elements with translucent features that appear to be as clear as glass. A rainbow of over 40,000 multicoloured LEDs light up the sculptures, creating romantic variations to bring them to life in spectacular fashion. A photographer’s paradise. Temperatures hovering around the zero mark was initially cause for some concern, but the weather actually altered the appearance of some sculptures, changing their formerly smooth surfaces to a more interesting, textured look. (The larger ice

structures, such as the toboggan runs, can continue to operate safely at -5°C.) To err on the side of caution, the Chinese ice sculptors will remain in Winnipeg for the duration of the ice show, repairing and re-carving their pieces as the need arises. If Winnipeg’s first Great Ice Show is deemed a success, it could become a regular part of the city’s calendar of festivals and events – our annual celebration of ice and snow, perhaps.
Show organizers hope to redesign the park year after year to ensure that there are always new, exciting and engaging things for tourists and visitors to experience. one are the days of dark, dingy basements, where the sump pumps run and spiders and ladybugs abound. Instead, finished basements have evolved into bright, beautiful spaces that rival the main floor. Tamara Eckstein of Eckstein Design Group knows all about making the most of a home’s lower level. She recently tackled a basement development, creating a refreshing and refined recreational area from a blank canvas. Eckstein’s clients, a professional couple with two active children, wanted a functional and fun space for their family. “One of the biggest criteria for the project was to have a large games area where the family could have a ping pong table,” Eckstein explains. “There is definitely some competitive spirit within the family.”

Having worked with Eckstein on two previous projects, the easygoing couple handed all their trust to the designer, allowing her creative control. “I act as contractor on my projects,” explains Eckstein, adding that she hires the trades and manages the scheduling of the project. “I get to ensure that my design is executed to a tee from start to finish.” Eckstein’s vision for the basement of the 2,800-square foot home was to make the space unexpected and infuse a mix of traditional and mid-century modern. To give the basement a main-floor feel, she “disregarded the standard notion that basements are meant to have drop tile ceilings and carpet.” According to Eckstein, the key to achieving a glamourous games area was “adding a bit more oomph and not accepting that basements need to look a certain way.” Going against the grain meant executing elegant custom details typically expected on the main level. “The vision was to incorporate bulked up traditional architectural elements such as the mouldings, built-ins, a fireplace and coffered ceiling, but then balance the room out with more modern furnishings and a few classic vintage midcentury pieces.” Originally, Eckstein had envisioned a two-tone paint scheme, with white wainscoting and a greyish tone on the upper portion of the walls. In the end, Eckstein tossed out the two-tone concept in favour of something a bit more fresh and fun – all white walls with monochromatic components and a few colourful accents. “It took the seriousness out of all the traditional architectural details and gave the basement more of a feeling of height,” she explains. “Mixing the traditional architectural elements with the contemporary furnishings resulted in a finished product with depth and interest.” Pot lights, stylish fixtures and a perfectly-placed pendant were installed to give off glitz, glamour and lots of light Opposite top: Preppy pops of colourful in the toss cushions brighten the charcoal sectional sofa. throughout the entertaining area. Little extras like in-cabinet and in-shelf lighting offer big impact, highlighting opulent details such as brushed brass hardware and mementos. Custom millwork and built-in bookcases keep things sleek and tidy and provide a place to tuck away photo albums, board games and electronics. A touch of rustic simplicity and natural wood comes through in accents like the coffee table, the sofa arm board and ornate antlers. Because the basement was an empty space waiting to be brought to life, very few challenges stood in Eckstein’s way. “Common in most basements was the placement of the teleposts, and making them make sense within the design,” she details. Eckstein turned a con into a pro by cleverly creating fixed pillars that flank a bar counter – an ideal place for eating a slice of pizza while still facing the flat screen TV. The eat-in area with bar-height stools splits the multifunctional space into two areas – one for TV watching, the other for game playing and exercising. The orientation also allows for the family’s first priority: the ping-pong table. With ample room around the table, guests can easily pass by to sneak a snack or two from the stunning wet bar, complete with under mount sink, wine fridge, and quartz countertop. The bar cabinets and bathroom and utility doors received a dramatic dose of Sherwin Williams paint in Gris, a greyish colour echoed in the gas fireplace’s Basaltino mosaic tile. Instead of the customary upper-cabinetry, Eckstein kept it light and airy, opting for floating shelves that compliment the equallyunconventional high-end Torlys Everwood vinyl plank flooring. “Both the clients and I were originally completely opposed to the idea of vinyl plank flooring until I saw this stuff! It is remarkable how real it looks. It is perfect for basements and great for any moisture that may come up through the floor.” The elegant and realistic wood texture flooring is impervious to water, ultra-thick and durable, and warm to the touch. abode floor, because it’s dent-resistant, quiet, and highly stain resilient. Before the floor planks were fitted, DRIcore subfloor was installed, creating a thermal break and air gap between the concrete and the top layer of flooring, adding warmth underfoot. While Eckstein admits to splurging on the flooring, budget-friendly finds, such as IKEA pillows and gold spray-painted pots with faux foliage didn’t break the bank. A sophisticated powder room is a welcome surprise off of the recreation area, combining timeless elegance and fashionable flair. Bold, geometric wallpaper counters the white walls and wainscoting and adds a playful pattern with the perfect amount of pop. “I am totally into black and white right now,” Eckstein gushes. “It always looks classic and glamorous. The wallpaper just punches it up a bit. The bold geometric makes it fun, and again, takes the seriousness off of the traditional elements. It’s the same juxtaposition of modern and traditional that we see in the rest of the basement.” A black vanity with shaker-style doors and chrome hardware flawlessly flatters the marble herringbone tile floor and grounds the room. The mirror and sconces have tons of vintage appeal, but are trendy enough to blend into the chic space. Despite the extravagant details in the basement, the most important aspect of this area can be found at the bottom of the stairs. Four framed black-and-white family photos hang there, a gentle reminder that the best part of the space is the people that play in it.

F
or Adam Bumbolo and Jaclyn Wiebe of Fireside Design Build, every home design starts with the question: Where is the light? “It’s important to read the house before starting any design project so that everything we do in the house makes sense. We always try to be site sensitive,” Bumbolo says. “Among the first considerations is the solar orientation – what amount and quality of natural light am I going to get, what are the peak times of day and what are the seasonal differences? You need to plan around that. “Nine times out of ten when we meet a client, they will tell us that they want it to look ‘light’ and ‘bright’. They want modern, but not sterile. We can achieve that by maximizing how much light is going to get in there.” Daylight was a factor in a Birds Hill home renovation recently completed by Fireside Design Build. While the rural property basks in plenty of natural light, it invited the opportunity to widen windows and open up spaces, allowing that light to travel more freely between rooms. “The homeowners wanted modern, clean lines but to maintain the rusticity and texture of a farmhouse. The design had to suit a house in the country,” Bumbolo recalls. One of the project’s earliest challenges was making critical foundation and mechanical repairs to the kitchen area (an addition to the home’s original footprint) before the renovation could begin. This is where Fireside Design Build’s expertise came in. “We blur the lines between a traditional design firm and a general contractor, so that we can meet with the client, design with a realworld budget in mind and then problem solve while still being able to maintain the integrity of the design,” he explains. “Being able to stay

within budget and still provide the client with all the features they want is pretty much impossible if you’re not a design-build firm.” Bumbolo says that because Fireside was engaged in every aspect of project, they were able to pivot as issues arose using a process called Save and Splurge. “This methodology lets us evaluate the client’s priorities and compels us to find creative solutions that suit the space and fit the budget without compromising functionality.” In terms of the “Save,” they were able to use IKEA cabinetry in the kitchen, while a “Splurge” was the visually-stunning custom millwork showpiece, including a three-door wall cabinet and extended canopy separating the kitchen and living areas. “The canopy continues across the ceiling to create a room within a room, so that when you’re sitting under it, you know you’re in the dining area,” he explains. “Open concept can make people uncomfortable because when you’re in one giant room there are no cues to tell you what kind of space you’re in. We always try to delineate zones within an openconcept space to clearly define where you prepare your food and where you’re going to eat from where you’ll relax for the evening.” The designers planned for the immediate and future needs of this growing family, from a sunken TV room and play area off the kitchen to creating a comfortable front parlour for relaxing and entertaining. The home’s expanse of natural light, neutral tones and warm colours, including flagstone around the contemporary fireplace, extend into these areas to create a visual flow.

Made from locally-reclaimed ash, the wall cabinet is designed to be shallow enough so as not to be obtrusive while open and when closed, looks like an architectural feature. Behind each of the doors is a separate component – a space for dishes, a broom closet for cleaning supplies and a walk-up bar. “We custom-engineered hinges so that the bar in the middle swings all the way open and stays open so that people can access it comfortably while the hosts are entertaining,” says Bumbolo, adding that his favourite design feature is the triangular cutbacks integrated into the cabinet doors. “This finger pull is a very engaging detail that allows you to interact with the natural wood as opposed to an applied handle.” In addition to the kitchen, dining room and living room, Fireside Design Build provided new flooring, lighting, paint, and modified the fireplace with a hearth and storage in the front parlour. They also widened the doorway of a sunken living space that doubles as a playroom for the couple’s toddler. “The homeowners love the new ‘farmhouse modern’ design because it’s natural to the surroundings, it flows well and most of all, it works for them. They have a dog and a baby and everything’s held up,” Bumbolo says. “That’s really important to us as well. We want to design intuitively and to ensure that things are well built and well designed; we don’t want to create something that looks good for a photo shoot but isn’t functional for real life.”

veryone can relate to the thrill of having something new. Whether it’s the price sticker on the bottom of a shoe, a phone with an unscratched screen or anything packed in bubble wrap, we all understand the special kind of excitement that can only be found in the shine (or the warranty) of a new acquisition. For some, that kind of thrill extends to the buying of brand new home: unblemished flooring, smudge-free walls and sparkling appliances can easily quicken the pulse of many a home buyer. But eventually, just like the blue plastic film covering the control panel of a washing machine, the edges begin to peel back a bit and you suddenly realize that your “new” house from the 1990s is starting to show its age. Such was the case for the owners of a bungalow in a prime location in Linden Ridge. While many of the original features that first attracted them to the space – soaring vaulted ceilings, and an intelligent floor plan floor plan that combined defined zones within an open floor plan – still maintained their appeal, the original finishes were beginning to feel tired. They turned to designer Arthur Liffmann of Envy Paint & Design, who had previously reworked their daughters’ bedrooms, to reimagine their main living space. Liffmann quickly determined that the two main focal points in the space required attention. “In both areas, it was about correcting proportions. The original fireplace, aside from being slightly off-centre, was underscaled to the room; the patio doors felt dwarfed by the volume of the space due to the pitched ceiling. Aside from that, the existing layout could be reworked to accommodate their needs.” Those needs included a list of requests for a space that needed to function as a family room for an active family with two young daughters, an intimate space for entertaining friends, and a comfortable zone for hosting a large crowd for holiday parties. The designer began by reconfiguring the fireplace wall: the original gas fireplace was repurposed and refreshed by a clean-lined mantel, split-face tile surround and a new widened hearth, and then flanked by creamy white Shaker-style built-ins that provide both the display space and the closed storage the clients required. “The original orientation was very vertical, and fancied up with multiple styles of traditional trim work,” notes Liffmann. “The new elevation balances the room and is more in-line with the architectural style throughout the rest of the home.” To re-proportion the feel of the patio doors, Liffmann employed a classic decorating trick. “The draperies are hung at eight feet – the same height as the fireplace wall. We selected substantial drapery hardware in black, which helped to create a Touches of black in the art and accent furnishings add contrast that heightens the light and airy feeling in the space; a rustic industrial cart provides smart storage for extra cushions and throws beside the large sectional. Opposite clockwise from top: The modern lines of the new mantel echo the clean Shaker-style trim of the cabinets flanking the fireplace; contrasting patterns in a similar palette create a comfortably layered feel; the existing gas fireplace was reimagined with a new surround, hearth and mantel.

new horizontal line, and we stacked the drapery off the windows, which makes them feel wider,” he notes. While effectively balancing the scale of the doors with the height of the vaulted ceiling, the decision to ended up providing the jump-off point for the interior decorating scheme. “The embroidered linen fabric used for the drapery is luxurious and fabulous. While it was a splurge, the clients understood that it was a significant decorating element that really set the tone for elevating the space. When the drapery was installed, the open concept area of the house really started to come together.” Drawing from the drapery palette, the designer selected a large charcoal sectional that provides comfortable lounging space for the entire family. A rust and copper-toned drum coffee table, coordinating metal-studded cushions and customized chair featuring a striped back cushion all reference the tones and shapes of the drapery fabric. Bold, large-scale artwork above the sectional complements the subtle pattern of the wallpaper on the fireplace wall it faces. While almost entirely neutral, the room feels energized by the mix of textures and contrasting tones. The homeowners are equally energized about the refreshed space. “We’ve really enjoyed working with Arthur; he’s very professional and easygoing, and we like that he’s very open to our ideas for the house.” With the living area is now mostly completed (future plans include new flooring throughout the space and the remainder of the house), updates to the kitchen and dining areas are also on the horizon. In the meantime, the homeowners are enjoying their renewed sense of excitement about their home. Says the wife, “It was so exciting to come home when it was all staged for the big reveal – we really feel like we have a new home!”

PULLED PORK WITH CHIPOTLE AIOLI AND BARBECUE SAUCE (SUMMER 2013)
Serves 8 1 teaspoon ground paprika 1 teaspoon ground chili powder 1 tablespoon ground cumin 2 tablespoons dark brown sugar 1 teaspoon freshly ground pepper and sea salt 1 (3 to 4 lb) boneless pork butt (shoulder) roast 1 recipe barbecue sauce ( see below) 1 recipe chipotle aioli (see below) 8 soft rolls Mix together paprika, chili powder, cumin, sugar, salt and pepper. Rub pork all over with spice mixture. Refrigerate at least 3 hours or overnight. Preheat one burner of a two burner barbecue to high; reduce to medium. Temperature should read 250°F to 300°F. Place pork on oiled grill over unlit burner. Close lid and cook pork for 3 to 4 hours and meat thermometer reads 160°F. Transfer to cutting board, tent with foil and let stand 20 minutes. Using 2 forks, pull pork into shreds; place in bowl. Warm sauce and pour 1 to 1 ½ cups over meat; toss to coat. Serve on buns with remaining sauce and chipotle aioli. Chipotle Aioli ¾ cup mayonnaise 1 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 2 tablespoons chipotle peppers, chopped Mix together in small bowl. Cover and chill. Classic Barbecue Sauce Makes 3½ cups 2 tablespoons canola oil 2 cloves garlic, minced 1 small onion, finely chopped 2 cups canned diced tomatoes 1 cup ketchup 1 teaspoon ground cumin ½ teaspoon paprika 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce (Continued on page 80)

Cut butter into dry ingredients and press into ungreased 9” square pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes. While crust is baking beat all ingredients together. Pour our over crust and bake at 350 degrees for 25 minutes. Cool and sprinkle with icing sugar. Cut into squares. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Butter and flour two 8-inch round cake pans, tapping out excess flour or spray with cooking spray. Insert a round of parchment paper cut to fit in the bottom of each pan. In a medium bowl whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and lemon zest. In a large bowl, using an electric mixer, beat butter and sugar until light and fluffy. With mixer on low, beat in eggs one at a time. Beat in lemon juice. Add sour cream. Alternately beat in flour mixture and buttermilk beginning and ending with flour mixture; mix just until combined. Divide batter between pans and smooth tops. Bake until cakes pull away from sides of pans (about 30 to 35 minutes). While cakes bake bring ½ cup sugar and ½ cup water to a boil in a saucepan. Add lemon slices and simmer 25 minutes. Place lemon slices onto a waxed-paperlined plate. Stir ¼ cup fresh lemon juice into syrup and set aside until cakes are done. Once cakes are baked let cool in pans 10 minutes. Run a knife around edges of pans and invert cakes onto a wire rack. Poke holes in warm cakes with a toothpick or thin skewer. Spoon syrup over each cake five times and discard reamining syrup or make into lemonaid by adding water and ice. Let cakes cool completely. Frost cooled cakes and top with candied lemon slices.

CHICKEN IN LETTUCE CUPS
2 tablespoons canola oil 4 cloves garlic, minced 1 cup finely chopped baby boy choy 1 ½ pounds ground chicken 3 green onions finely sliced ½ cup hoisin sauce 2 tablespoons soy sauce 1 teaspoon sweet chilli sauce sea salt, to taste 1 head baby butter lettuce, separated into leaves ½ cup dry roasted peanuts, crushed fresh cilantro leaves, to garnish Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add garlic and cook for 4 minutes.. Add ground chicken and cook 5 to 7 minutes or until no longer pink, breaking mixture up with a wooden spoon. Add bok choy and cook 2 minutes. Stir in green onions, hoisin, soy and chilli sauce; season with salt and heat 2 minutes. Transfer mixture to serving bowl. To assemble, spoon 3 to 4 tablespoons filling into lettuce leaves. Sprinkle with peanuts and cilantro. Roll up tightly. Serves 8 Tip Best way to eat this dish is to have a platter set with bowl of peanuts, cilantro, lettuce leaves and chicken mixture. Have each person assemble their own. The dish is slightly messy – make sure to have plenty of napkins on hand.

CHORIZO CON QUESO DIP (WINTER 2012)
½ pound chorizo or pork sausage, casing removed and crumbles 1 cup chopped white onion 2 cloves garlic, minced 2 jalapeno, seeded and finely chopped ½ cup fresh tomato salsa 4 ounces cream cheese ½ cup grated Monterey Jack cheese In a large non-stick skillet, over medium heat, cook the chorizo until pink. Add onion and cook until soft and fragrant, about 3 minutes. Add garlic and jalapeno and cook for 4 minutes. Stir in tomato salsa and cream cheese and mix well. Add grated cheese and cook until cheese is thoroughly melted. Transfer to a serving dish. Serve warm. Serves 10 Kitchen Notes Chorizo is a spicy Mexican sausage made from pork and seasoned with chilies, garlic and cumin. Look for it in the deli section of your local supermarket. BLUEBERRY MADELEINE WITH LEMON CURD (SPRING 2013)
1 cup all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking powder 4 eggs, room temperature 2/3 cup sugar grated zest of 1 lemon ½ cup butter, melted and cooled slightly 1/3 cup frozen wild blueberries, not thawed icing sugar, to dust Butter Madeleine mold; set aside. In medium bowl, sift flour and baking powder. In another bowl, whisk together eggs with sugar until light and fluffy about 4 minutes; stir in lemon zest. Fold flour mixture into egg mixture and drizzle melted butter over batter; stir gently. Cover and chill batter in refrigerator for 1 hour. Preheat oven to 375°F. Spoon batter into mold shapes, ¾ quarter full, do not spread. Divide blue
berries evenly between two batches. Bake cakes for 10 minutes, or until edges are lightly golden. Invert pan and tap out cakes; cool on wire rack. Repeat with remaining batter. Dust with icing sugar to serve. Makes 24.
LEMON CURD
6 egg yolks, room temperature 2 eggs, room temperature 1 cup sugar ½ cup fresh lemon juice ¼ cup unsalted butter, cubed and chilled For lemon curd, in small bowl whisk together eggs, sugar and lemon juice. Pour into small sauce pan. Cook over low heat, stirring with wooden spoon until thickened, about 3 to 5 minutes. Remove from heat and mix in butter, piece by piece. Transfer to bowl. Cover and chill 1 hour or up to 2 days. Makes 1½ cups

SNUG AS A BUG Choosing the correct rug size is essential to filling a space properly. This will make the rug look the best it can and do the most for the particular living area. Appropriate rug size should be based on furniture configuration in combination with the room size – not on one of these factors alone.
GOOD : Place a 5’ x 8’ rug in front of the sofa, or a rug that is at least the length of the sofa. If possible, leave a few inches of exposed floor between the rug and sofa to accent the furniture. When the rug is under a coffee table, make sure the rug is large enough to rest under all four legs of the table.
BETTER : Tuck a rug under all the front legs of the furniture pieces. The back legs of the sofa can be on or off the rug. This will typically require a rug that is 8’ x 10’ or larger. The rule of thumb is to leave 18” to 24” between the walls of the room an d the rug, creating a border of exposed floor that frames the furniture arrangement.
BEST: Select a room-sized rug that allows for all of the furniture to sit on it completely. This usually requires a rug 10’ x 13’ or larger. Leave 10” to 18” of exposed floor to create a border around the rug. Interestingly, this application, despite utilizing the largest rug, will make a room feel larger than using a small rug.

THE RIGHT HEIGHT How to measure your bar, table or countertop to determine the perfect seating.
A kitchen table stands between 28" and 30" high. It requires a chair with a seat height of 17� to 18�.
A bar typically stands between 40" and 42" tall. A stool with a sea height of 28" to 30" is ideal. Some bars are a bit higher at 45" to 48" high. This is termed spectator height and demands a seat height of 33" to 34".

A counter usually stands between 35" and 36" high. A stool with a seat height of 24" to 25" would be required.
The Space Case The industry standard is to allow 21" to 25" between the centres of each stool. Approximately 14" from the end of the bar or table to the first stool will provide adequate spacing for people to sit comfortably. If your stools have arms or swivel you should add a bit extra room.

For this reason I have a great interest in the history of art; and in certain artists and even more specifically, certain paintings by certain artists. Part of this interest is in technique; it can be nothing more or less than understanding how an artist painted a hand or a piece of drapery. The other part of this interest is in the process of how meaning is created by the artist. And even more importantly, how that meaning changes over time. In some ways it’s like taking an image apart to see how it works- as if it were a clock. And in the process of putting it together again, it’s meaning changes along with its appearance so that it is

never quite what it started out to be. And this process is of great interest to me. What it is to the viewer depends on their view of history. If the past is merely “over” then the work will offer very little. But I think the historical past is no more“over” than the personal past. What would any of us be without our memories of what has come before? And if that holds true at a personal level, by extension, does it not also hold true at a cultural and historical level? Are we not all involved in figuring out the past at some level and giving it meaning? That’s what I’m trying to do. And because I’m an artist I do it with paint. GOOD BERRY, BAD BERRY My family picks wild strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, and saskatoons. We pick what we know and leave everything else alone but I’ve always suspected there were more edible berries out there than we know about. A great guide that has just landed on our radar is Good Berry, Bad Berry, by Helen Yoest. The book is divided into three sections: Bad Berries; Good Berries; and Good Berry, Bad Idea. Each berry profile tells you what type of plant it is (vine, shrub, etc.), describes what the berry looks like, tastes like, what it’s used for, why it’s a bad or good idea, time of year you see the berries, what the flower looks like, what the leaf looks like, how big the plant gets, geographic origin, habitat type, hardiness zone, and further information. There’s also two pictures for each berry–one showing it on the plant, and a close-up. It’s pretty comprehensive and written as much as possible in plain English. If you're looking to add some adventure to your summer harvest pick this up in preparation for summer (available from Amazon.com).

BAKED BRIE WITH WILD MUSHROOMS (WINTER 2012) 1 tablespoon unsalted butter 1 medium onion, finely chopped 1 shallot, finely chopped 3 cups sliced assorted wild mushrooms 1 tablespoon brandy or dry sherry sea salt and freshly ground pepper, to taste 6 –ounce wheel of brie 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed 1 egg, beaten Melt butter in a large skillet, over medium-high heat. Cook onion and shalllot, until soft and fragrant. Add mushrooms and sherry; cook untill soft. Season with salt and pepper. Remove from heat and let cool. Remove rind from top of brie and discard. Spoon mushrooms evenly over top of cheese. Roll out puff pastry on a lightly floured surface. Place cheese in center of pastry

and gather up edges to enclose cheese ( Make sure not to tear pastry or cheese will run out when cooked). A small bundle of dough will form on top. Pinch top together and trim excess dough with scissors. Brush egg wash on top of pastry. Place on a parchment lined baking sheet. Cover and chill 30 minutes. Bake in a preheated 400°F oven for 2025 minutes, until pastry is golden brown. Place on an serving platter. Serve warm with assorted bread and crackers. Serves 10
TORTILLA CHIPS 6 6 -inch soft tortillas canola oil for deep-frying sea salt, to taste Lay tortillas on cutting board and cut tortilla into 8 wedges. In a medium saucepan with a heavy bottom, heat oil to 350 degrees. Fry tortillas in
small batches until light golden, about 5 seconds per side. Quickly remove from heat and drain on paper towels. Sprinkle with salt. Tortillas can be made several hours in advance and warmed in a preheated 350 degree oven for 10 minutes. (Continued from page 57) 1 tablespoon molasses 1 tablespoon cider vinegar 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard 2 tablespoons brown sugar 1 teaspoons coarse salt Heat oil in medium saucepan over low heat. Add garlic and onion; cook until fragrant, about 5 minutes. Add rest of ingredients. Bring to boil. Reduce to simmer and cook, uncovered, for 20 to 25 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat and let cool. With hand held blender, blend sauce until smooth. Store in refrigerator up to two weeks.
