I’m going to have to be brief. The magazine is again bursting with original local content, for which I must thank our contributors and the continued interest of so many local clubs, societies and organisations.

Although our Olympians, and their supporters, have done us proud – and while our Paralympians prepare to do battle – the most poignant local event was perhaps the Horsforth Gathering. Each senior citizen, 75+, was invited to a buffet and live entertainment at Leeds Trinity University. 122 attended. Much good work is done for senior citizens by the statutory and voluntary sectors, particularly the churches, so it’s not as if they are otherwise entirely neglected. But I hope you will find it as is heart-warming as I did to see the pictures of so many enjoying themselves at the same time.

One hot potato in last month’s issue was dogs running loose in public spaces. Well, in spite of the depth of emotion expressed online in local social media, both for and against, the weight of correspondence in our mailbag is nicely summed up on our letters page – support and respect for responsible behaviour by all.

Adel YCA Members Dine at Crag House Farm

The Yorkshire Countrywomen’s Association is a 4000 strong organisation based geographically on the three ridings and supporting rural, traditional and craft activities. They have a strong presence at a large number of country shows. For example, they will be represented at the Nidderdale Show on 24 September.

In July the Adel Branch held their annual dinner at the restaurant at Crag House Farm – a venue featured in the last issue of Covered. First they were treated to a talk from Lis Wilcox, Crag House Farm’s press and publicity officer, about the farm’s facilities and Caring for Life, a Christian based charity offering shelter and support for vulnerable adults.

BBC’s The One Show at Bidders Auction Room, Guiseley Researching and reporting the less well known world of police auctions, BBC’s The One Show (weekdays 7pm) paid visits to Bradford Police and then Bidders in Guiseley. In Bradford the team heard that only a small percentage of recovered property was returned to the rightful owners – mainly because the amount of time and effort spent on relatively low value items would be disproportionate.

At Guiseley, the reporter (pictured) interviewed Bidders co-director Mark Huckerby. Bidders holds the contract for auctioning goods recovered or seized by West Yorkshire Police and is therefore well placed to comment on the final destination of seized and recovered goods. The piece is due to be broadcast in mid September.

Iveson based Feral Cat Welfare Leeds is a registered charity that tends to feral cat colonies throughout the area, providing food and veterinary care. On 11 August they held a fundraising table sale in St Margaret’s Church Hall, Horsforth. Gemma Bolton of FCW Leeds is on their own stall, selling a new fundraising intiative – soaps and the like.

Critics have been proved wrong and the whole country has come together in celebrating the athletes who have done us all proud. More medals were won this year by Team GB than in any Olympic year since 1908, including 29 golds, with many world records set in the process. Yorkshire has shone through with athletes from across the region winning medals and it was particularly great to cheer on Leeds born Nicola Adams, Lizzie Armistead and all of our athletes from the city. The homecoming celebration in Millennium Square was a real highlight for me and I was so proud to see a post box painted gold in our own constituency in Horsforth to mark the achievements of the Brownlee brothers.

People from across the country have been involved from the start, from Olympic Torchbearers to Games Makers in London and the volunteers have drawn praise from around the world.

We have more excitement to come with the Paralympics and I hope everyone in Pudsey and Aireborough will join me in supporting our own Paralympian and Rawdon resident, gold medallist David Stone, when he competes to hold his title at road cycling, along with all of the athletes from Leeds.

Families Get Active in Horsforth Horsforth Children’s Centre, an initiative supported by central government, NHS, jobcentreplus and Leeds City Council were working hand in hand with LCC’s Family Learning Unit from 6 to 8 August.

The purpose of the fun and activity based “Active Families Week” was twofold. First, the promotion of healthy lifestyles through exercise (play) and diet. Secondly, encouraging parents and children to learn together through play – and, when our photographer visited, by making and eating healthy cup cakes.

The week was concluded with a visit to Ponderosa Farm near Heckmondwike, taking the nature trail and encouraging interaction between children, parents and the animals. Fundraising at Cookridge Fire Station

Cookridge Fire Station organises four boot sales each year, raising funds for the Firefighters Charity and others, and giving charities the opportunity to raise funds for themselves. On 11 August Steve and Hilary Lawther were there raising funds for Gambian Schools Trust. Steve and Hilary live in Apperley Bridge and work closely with schools throughout the north Leeds area.

Cookridge Fire Station will be holding its entertaining and informative annual open day on 2 September.

Town Garage Take on Talented Technician Established since 1962 Town Garage has been on the Horsforth map for generations. Having recently lost a vehicle technician who relocated to Hull (yes really!) a search began for his replacement. Rather than opt for the now customary route of contacting a recruitment agency, Managing Director Phil Leeks asked Covered to run a job advert. “I wanted to ensure that we were getting a local person” said Phil “we’re a family owned and operated business. We work and live in the area and I think it’s important to employ locally where possible”. The advert was an immediate success and connected Town Garage with Daryl Coghlan who was previously employed at a Mercedes main dealer in the city. Daryl lives just round the corner from his new workplace, you’d think that would be reason enough to change employer however, it was working for a family concern that most tempted Darryl to apply.

Cllr Barry Anderson: Holt Park Leisure Centre

More Space This Summer?

A number of residents raised concerns about the need to close the Holt Park Leisure Centre in December 2012 well in advance of the new Centre opening. These have centred on lack of communication, alternative provision, length of closure and provision for the disabled. To try and address these issues I met with a number of LCC officers.

The main reasons given for closure in December are to tie in with the school terms and meet planning conditions - the current site must be demolished so a path can be installed to the new centre. An additional month is needed to decommission the site.

I have been told that letters were given to as many regular users as possible, plus letters distributed from the Reception area. All schools were contacted.

A further letter is planned at the end of August.

Alternative provision for schools has been agreed but work is needed on transport for them. Block bookings are being relocated to other Leisure Centres. Officers need to work with Ralph Thoresby School so that any capacity there can be prioritised to the benefit of those being displaced.

I have raised the problem of access to public transport to the other leisure facilities, a problem for those with no transport of their own. And, for those with their own transport, other centres do not offer the same parking facilities as Holt Park.

A newsletter is about to be produced to give up to date information and I have offered to host a public Question and Answer session for residents.

I will continue to keep residents advised in this matter.

Lawnswood Cemetery is immense. It contains hundreds of grand examples of Victorian and later monumental art – some Grade II Listed. There are the graves of generations of Captains of Art, Industry, Commerce and Society including, for example, those of fourteen of Lord Mayors of Leeds.

Friends of Lawnswood Cemetery was formed last October by a group dedicated to its protection, improvement and promotion. Now fifty strong the group holds action days, where around twenty volunteers are set about the task of tidying areas of the cemetery. They also hold informative walks during the summer months, for parties of twenty or so. Some focus on the cemetery’s wider connections with the outside world.

There were two walks in July; The Leeds Pals Battalion in WWI and Lord Mayors of Leeds. Covered attended the former - 1 July being the 96th anniversary of the commencement of the Battle of the Somme, when local historian and member Andrea Hetherington took us through the history of Leeds Pals, their involvement in WWI and their memorials.

Greg Mulholland MP Wow, what an incredible Olympic Games Great Britain had! Finishing third in the medals table just below America and China was incredible but, not only that, were Yorkshire to be counted as a nation then we would have finished in 12th place putting us above the likes of Jamaica, Spain and even the host for the 2016 games, Brazil.

I was delighted when Otley’s Lizzie Armistead began our medal-winning roll by taking silver in the Women’s Road Race and her thrilling sprint to the finish will stay in my memory forever - as will the incredible performance by Bramhope’s Brownlee brothers.

I had the pleasure of being with a crowd of people from Leeds University in London’s Hyde Park to watch the end of the men’s Triathlon and shouted myself hoarse as Alistair Brownlee triumphantly crossed the finish line in first place and as his brother, Jonny, finished in a fabulous, bronze-medal winning third place even after a 15 second timepenalty! The whole of Yorkshire was behind these amazing boys and I am so proud to be their Member of Parliament.

My only disappointment with the Olympic Games was LOCOG’s choice of official beer. There are some 840 breweries in Britain who produce over 8500 beers so I fail to understand that, with so much British beer to choose from, the Olympic organisers picked a fizzy, bland, foreign lager to be the London 2012 beer of choice. The games were really great at showing the best of British but sadly failed to do this when choosing the beer!

So there we have it, seven years of planning, two weeks of cheering, seven golds, two silvers and three bronze medals for Yorkshire and the London 2012 Games are now over. But, though the competition is now just a memory, the legacy of those who did our country proud will live on forever. The athletes will inspire generations to come, new heroes have been born and the world has seen the true prowess of Britain’s athletes.

Congratulations to all Olympic and Paralympic competitors of 2012 and as for future games, Leeds 2040 - anyone?

Leeds Trinity Business Network Reconvenes in

Local Matters

LTBN reconvenes on Wednesday 12 September, after a short summer break, this time with the usual informal networking over a buffet lunch due to be followed by a session on Conflict Resolution with Darren Good of Good Sense/ Privitas Security.

The network group, now a year old and facilitated and provided free of charge by Trinity’s Employment Partnership, exists to put local business in touch with each other and the wider local business community. It is also gives Trinity an opportunity to promote their own business-related short courses and seminars - and to connect with local employers willing and suitable to take students on structured placements.

Fayre by Alley

Alleyne Oman moved from Toronto to London in 2001 to pursue a career in financial services. Two years ago, on relocating to Leeds with her partner, she decided that she’d had enough in the world of finance and started her own catering business, offering a mixture of traditional sandwiches and rolls, deli products and Canadian desserts. Outside catering has recently included Leeds Loves Food and the beer festivals at Newlay’s Abbey Inn, Pudsey Civic Hall and Horsforth St Margaret’s Church Hall.

In mid-June Alley Oman took over an existing sandwich shop in Kirkstall, quickly refurbishing and rebranding it Fayre by Alley. Conveniently located between Headingly train station and Stadium, the shop serves both the local office community and passing sports fans.

Some of Alley’s most popular Canadian specialities are her own varieties of Nanaimo bars. Named after its city of origin, the basic Nanaimo bar has a crunchy biscuit, butter, cocoa and coconut base, a sweet creamy custard middle and solid chocolate top. Beyond that, it’s a matter of the confectioner’s own inspiration.

Give Covered a call to claim Editor’s Note - Following last month’s article ‘Leeds on Dogs’ our postbag was bursting with letters in defense of owners rights to exercise their dog in our open spaces. In contrast, we haven’t received communication from anyone demanding that laws be altered to ensure dogs are leashed in public places. Of all the ‘pro-dog’ letters we’ve picked Jean Slavin’s to print as it summerises the thoughts of most.

Dear Chris, As a responsible dog owner, and animal lover in general, I could not let the article in the most recent edition of your magazine go unchallenged. I do not visit Hall Park with or without my dog but I do use other parks in the Leeds area.

First of all how do you get the statistic of “60% fearful of dogs in parks”? Until this magazine article I had no idea (I’m sure along with many other park users) that a campaign to get LCC to “do something” was ongoing.

It would appear that the majority of your respondents are anti-dog, and will therefore do anything (other than consider that dog owners also have “rights” as well as responsibilities) to ban dogs from parks altogether or have them permanently leashed.

I would like some statistics on exactly how many people have actually been bitten or attacked in public areas. The fact that people are “fearful” of dogs is not of itself reason to demand that LCC do something.

Yes I think education, along with a recognition that public parks are for everyones’ benefit, would go a long way to resolve many of the conflicts associated with this emotive subject. “Education” however always seems to be aimed at dog owners. What happened to educating everyone, particularly young chidren, on how to behave around dogs? Safety is paramount and when I was a child my parents took the responsibility of making sure I understood the

possible consequences of behaving inappropriately around dogs and animals in general. It seems that all of the “responsibility” is put onto dog owners with no “rights” being considered. On the other hand the “rights” of children, parents and non-dog owners are accepted as a given with no “responsibilities” on their part.

Dogs, especially young ones, are very much like children and the majority of owners take responsibility for educating their pets. They are however living ,breathing creatures with instincts and not as much reasoning power as humans. They all have their own personality and traits and should be respected as individuals. A few simple rules followedby non-dog owners and children would, I am sure, help to reduce their “fearfulness”.

1. If a dog comes towards you stand still. Never run away as this provokes a dogs chase instinct.

2. Never scream as this excites a dog and it is likley to want to “join in the fun”.

3 Never run at a dog or stare it in the eyes as this is seen as a sign of aggression.

4. If you are eating or having a picnic be aware that dogs are likely to come towards you. They have a scavageing instinct and many owners really struggle to tame this.

Responsible owners will always call their dogs off, but sometimes they may need a bit of help. For non-dog owners I would also add that, although having dogs leashed and muzzled may appear to be the answer, it is in fact likely to cause more problems. Dogs (like children) need chance to run free in order to expend physical energy which in turn calms the mind. Dog owners know that dogs who are normally placid, can display aggressive behaviour when on leads as they feel trapped. They also pick up any anxiety from the owner, become fearful, and revert to their “survival instinct” behaviour. As dogs no longer roam the streets it is imperative that they have places where they can display “normal” behaviour and running free is a huge part of this.

In conclusion I think a bit of tolerance on everyones’ part is what is needed. For non-dog owners, and parents in particular, please remember that a dog may be the only companion a person has. Dogs contribute to physical and mental wellbeing, and teaching a child about the positive side of dogs may be one of the greatest gifts you give them.

This month your harvest should be in full production, with peas, beans, cabbages, cauliflowers and a full range of soft fruit. It is the time of the year to bake, freeze, bottle, jam and thoroughly enjoy all the benefits of your hard work.

In the vegetable garden it is possible to purchase small plants of spring cabbage, sprouting broccoli, brussel sprouts etc to plant in vacant spaces. A light sprinkle of lime around the planting holes will be beneficial, together with protection from birds.

Gooseberries and red currants should have new side growths reduced to five leaves from the main stems, also cut down summer fruiting raspberries to 3” above the soil after all the berries have been collected. Cut off and plant strawberry runners into new ground, replacing old beds after every three years.

In the flower garden it is a daily task to deadhead all the faded flowers, as this stimulates the plants to produce new growth. Sweet peas in particular, will stop flowering if seeds pods are left on the

plant. This year some of the tall perennial plants appear to be growing taller than normal, so a few bamboo canes and a circle of string will help them to look their best when in full flower.

Lavender plants are in full flower at the moment, and the flowers may be cut and dried to make scented sachets for linen drawers. Consider picking cooking herbs, either for drying or freezing to use during the winter.

Tomatoes and cucumbers are now producing good quantities of fruit, and the skill in keeping them this way is to water and feed regularly. Keep an eye open for green and white fly on your crops, taking appropriate action as soon as they are spotted.

The Horsforth Gathering is the present title of the annual event where the town’s most senior citizens, aged 75+, are invited to a buffet and entertainment. Founded in the 1940s, its original purpose was to help local pensioners meet medical bills.

But the arrival of the NHS in 1948 let the charity turn their attention to helping meet social needs rather than medical.

Cause for Celebration at Slimming World

Slimming World holds numerous weekly sessions throughout the area, aiming to accommodate wide preferences for location, time of day and day of the week. One of those sessions is on Friday mornings at Horsforth’s Grove Centre, New Street.

I loved every minute of the olympics. It gave me such a good feeling. It was a perfect demonstration of how amazing it is to achieve something you have worked so hard for.

Pictured are thirteen members who have achieved, and are maintaining, their target weights.

Individually they have shed between one stone and three and a half – and collectively in excess of 31 stones. The group as a whole is a mixture of all ages ranging from young mums to grandparents. It is also a happy group. Members share and try new recipes and foods, while supporting and inspiring each other to achieve their own weight loss goals in a friendly, fun environment.

In the first six months of 2012 the Horsforth Friday group lost an amazing 1898lbs - 135st 8lbs. Current members are now looking forward to adding to this in the second half of the year.

You could palpably feel the emotion of the athletes who won. The elation, the relief and the disbelief that they had done it, that their hard work had after all been worthwhile. So what do you want to achieve? Losing weight, running a marathon, getting a job? Whatever it is, when you finally succeed you will have the same fantastic feeling of elation as the athletes who won a medal. But remember the amount of effort put in is equal to the reward.

I found that out when I climbed Everest. It was the hardest thing I have ever done, but the incredible feeling of achievement I got will be with me forever.

Personal achievement gives you a feeling that never goes away, it’s amazing and you can have it too. But you can’t buy it, you have to make it happen. So whatever it is you want to achieve take the first step today. Stop thinking about doing it and just do it!

Take A Trek With Susan In 2004 Susan Harper Todd became the first British woman to be leader of an Everest Expedition and only the Fifth British woman in history to stand on the summit of Mount Everest.

Covered reader, Richard Clarke, joined Susan’s last adventure and he told us “ In summer 2011, whilst waiting for a friend in a north Leeds bar, I read an article in Covered magazine regarding the trek to basecamp. Covered’s Guide To...

Extending Your Home Here at Covered we are always keen to learn new things. And what kind of a community magazine would we be if we didn’t share our knowledge with our readers? So in the first of our new series, let us guide you through the process of extending your home.

Firstly, think about what you hope to achieve from your extension. Look at the extensions other people in your area have built recently, especially on homes of a similar style and age to yours to get not only inspiration but to learn from their experiences Secondly, think about employing an architect.

Architects train for a minimum of seven years to qualify – so you’ll be in safe hands! Architects provide much more than just a set of drawings they’ll guide you through the planning and building process and bring value for money, peace of mind and imagination to your project.

Development, others will require Planning Permission which involves submitting your proposals to the council. You will also need to apply to the council for Building Regulations Approval.

Finally, be prepared for mess! Dust gets everywhere during a build! Accept that this is unfortunately just a necessary part of the process and it will all be worth it in the end!

Golden Brownlee Post Box

Alistair Brownlee ran out as the comfortable winner ahead of his younger brother Jonny who claimed bronze despite suffering a penalty during the race. The Brownlees later enjoyed a helicopter entrance back into Leeds for a homecoming party and Alistair now has his own golden post box!

However, it all could have been so different however.

Alistair suffered an Achilles tendon tear in February and had to miss several of the world triathlon events through injury in the early stages of the year. In his absence, younger brother Jonny became took the reigns, winning in Madrid and San Diego before Alistair returned to win at Kitzbuehel, Germany.

That was his first elite race since injury, less than two months before the Olympic final in London which saw the brothers finishing 1st and 2nd in Germany and collecting Gold and Bronze in Hyde Park, London.

The golden post-box will be something which Horsforth can be extremely proud about, after all only gold medal winning towns have the privilege!

Rawdon Juniors Simply Unbeatable!

Rawdon Cricket Club’s under-17s ended the season undefeated as they took the East section by storm to win the league without losing or drawing a game throughout the entire campaign. Manager John Statham’s side were untouchable throughout and have even reached the Denison Cup final where they will travel to Guiseley CC and look to beat the hosts to secure the cup victory on Sunday 9 September.

Rawdon reached the final of the cup by seeing off North Leeds CC in comfortable fashion and are now just one game from winning the league and cup double. Furthermore, the successful under-17 team at Rawdon will face the winners of the West section in the championship decider. The venue and opponents are yet to be confirmed.

The club will be grateful of anybody who wishes to support the boys in the final at Guiseley and spur John Statham and his lads onto victory where they can get their very safe hands on the much deserved silverware.

Guiseley Hoping It’s Third Time Lucky Guiseley AFC will head into the new Blue Square Bet North season after a pre-season which included the glitzy visits of Championship side Huddersfield Town and League Two Bradford City.

The Lions held just two home friendlies following restoration to the Nethermoor ground and began with a stunning 1-0 victory over the Terriers of Huddersfield courtesy of a Danny Forrest strike. Guiseley’s build up was nothing short of fantastic, neatly playing the ball around the static Huddersfield defence and ending with forward Forrest unleashing a drilled shot across goal and into keeper Alex Smithies’ right hand corner. Manager Steve Kittrick said going into the game that his side were “just invites to the party and hoping to spoil it.” And spoil it they did, bettering a full strength Huddersfield side which included £3 million price tag striker Jordan Rhodes who played the second half.

Following on from the victory over Huddersfield was the visit of nearby neighbours Bradford City who took no prisoners as they punished the home side with clinical finishing running out 4-0 winners on the night.

Guiseley can take a lot of positives from the two matches and will go into the new campaign full of confidence that it’ll be third time lucky in their pursuit to reach the pinnacle of non-league football.

Old Modernians CC will need to turn their fortunes around for the final six games of the season after losing three matches on the bounce in the Wetherby Cricket League Division One. Modernians’ last win came at the tail end of July when they beat Sicklinghall, bowling the opposition out for just 102 as they chased a target of 141 set by Mods.

Mods are just five points from 3rd place in the Wetherby Division One and will be confident that a strong finish to the season could see them surge back up the table and finish in the top three.

Old Mods were then beaten by Bilton-in-Ainsty by four wickets, Kirk Deighton by 126 runs and Great Preston by six wickets. Batsmen Lucas Ligt (pictured) was unlucky to be on the losing side for Mods as he posted 65 of his side’s 165 runs in the loss against Kirk Deighton.

Success for Lam in Leeds Pro-Am Cookridge potter Sanderson Lam was victorious in the Leeds Pro-Am snooker tournament held at the Northern Snooker Centre in August. Lam booked his place in the final winning 3-2 against Indian player Lucky Vatnani, a professional on the main tour last season.

recorded a 4-1 win over Lam to knock the Leeds player out at the first hurdle.

On a positive note, Lam has been selected to represent England in the Under-19s Home Internationals. The tournament which takes place between 7th- 14th September at the Pontins Snooker Centre in Prestatyn, Wales.

Lam met another young talented player Oliver Lines in the final and recorded a 3-1 victory to secure the Leeds Pro-Am title.

Adel Hockey Tasters Leeds Adel Carnegie Hockey Club is holding FREE taster sessions and a junior hockey tournament at the Adel Sports Club on Church Lane in September.

The morning allows girls and boys under-12s and under-10s who have never played the sport before to be involved and the club will be hoping the London Olympic motto ‘Inspire a generation’ has worked to encourage youngsters to get involved in trying new sports.

The event is to be held on Sunday 2nd September with the first taster session starting at 10:30am, running for 45 minutes as the newbie’s get their chance to try hockey. After that there will be a tournament for the current members.

The afternoon will then give under-14s and under16s who want to get involved the chance to do so in the second free taster of the day before a second tournament for current members and some presentations along the way.

Adel will be keen to get everybody involved and maintain the Olympic fever that has swept the nation. Current GB men’s captain Barry Middleton hails from Yorkshire, who knows, maybe Adel could help provide the next Yorkshire success!

Rawdon’s Paralympic Hope Paralympic gold medallist from Beijing David Stone will be aiming to achieve the same success when he heads to London for his home games. The Rawdon resident scooped cycling gold in both the road race and the time trial in China and has a sea of gold medals with wins in World Championships in 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2010.

David grabbed silver in the 2011 World Championships and will be aiming for a return to gold when he starts his Paralympic campaign where the road cycling runs from 5 to 8 September. In a recent blog David claimed that he was being plagued by the fact he has never beaten the times that he posted in Beijing and believed that he has to if he is to win in London.

However, in a race in June he set a new personal best and shaved three seconds off his Beijing time and beaten the up and coming German Hans-Peter Durst who had beaten him to gold in World Championships. Everything looks to be going to plan so far for the 31-year-old, an inspirational athlete who suffers with cerebral palsy and a genuine gold medal contender for the Paralympic Games in London.

However, he was less successful in the UK Players Tour Championship Event which took place the week after at the South West Snooker Academy in Gloucester. He faced a tough match in the First Qualifying Round playing against another exprofessional, Joe Swail. The Northern Irishman, who was once raked as the 10th best player in the world,

A Case of Mistaken Identity...

Covered have been snapped in action as photographer Ivor Hughes, as seen in the picture as Boris Johnson, and sports writer Jake Harvey were caught on top of a Guiseley AFC roof as the magazine reported on Guiseley’s impressive 1-0 victory over Championship side Huddersfield.

The picture was part of a Huddersfield cartoonist who creates satirical copy to accompany his matchday photos only this time it was ‘Covered’ at the sharp end of Danny Gee’s comical works!

It’s always good to see that the magazine and its photographer is getting out and about. Take a snap and write a witty caption. You never know, it might just get printed!
