DOGUE June '22: Furever Love & Pawtrimonials

Page 1

Letter from the Editor Woof, and Welcome back to another issue of DOGUE! We're so happy to have you here! June is known as the wedding month. In fact, the tradition of a June wedding dates back to Roman times. The origin of “June” derives its name from “Juno” who was the Roman goddess of love and marriage. It was thought that couples who married in June would be blessed with prosperity and happiness. This is why we decided to make our June issue a Wedding issue, and feature the wedding of the year, that happened earlier this year, between Twixie and Cowboy. A wedding so big, it was featured in the New York Times! In this issue, we discuss the growing trend of dog weddings, and professional pet photography. We also feature 4 dog photographers, from New York, Los Angeles, Mexico, and Indonesia. As always, we feature the latest of fashion from Barker's Bazbark, the latest of dog sports from Spawrts Illustrated, and the latest of travel from National Pawgraphic. We wish everyone a beautiful Summer and we hope to see you on @coverdogs! Till next time, XOXO,

T e New York Pet Pawtograp er Story by Francine Cohen

Many wish that they could spend their days rolling around on the ground with an adorable puppy, or two, and get paid for it. And, for Car en González , it’s a drea co e true! This talented photographer, and awardwinning for er chef, is the founder of NYC Pet Pawtographer, known on Instagra as @nycstreetdogs. González' love for dogs began with her fa ily dog, at the age of four. Many decades later she began her visual career in New York City as a docu entary photographer, chronicling the city and its citizens in black and white before adding color fil and putting a whole new genre of subjects in front of her lens. Now, as the city’s ost sought after puppy picture taker, she spends her days cajoling four legged furry odels into showing off their personality, and very successfully so. “My business started because of y love for dogs. While shooting New Yorkers’ co ings and goings, good o ents, and darker ones, I’d stop people walking dogs on the street, and ask if I could shoot their dogs for y Instagra . I have a natural curiosity for dogs. so I always want to know about their story, where they co e fro , and what they like..." While her business relies on subjects that ay only sit still long enough for a few quick snaps, González has developed a fool-proof ethod for capturing the best of a fa ily’s beloved pet and creating fra e-worthy i ages that grace the walls of any New York City apart ents. She says her secret is si ply... ti e!

38

“One of the things I do differently fro other pet photographers is that y sessions are not based on ti e. I give the pups as long as they need to capture a beautiful o ent." That patience, and willingness to get down on the ground with the dogs, whether it’s the iddle of the park or in front of The Met, is part of what enables González to get that great shot. More recently, González taught a sold-out class at B&H and shared with her students so e i portant truths about photographing pets. And, we asked her to share her best tips with us, too!

"1. GOOD LIGHT "Of course, lighting is very i portant. You want to have good light, but not too uch direct sunlight." 2. GET TO KNOW THEM, FIRST. "Getting to know your subjects akes a difference between a cute picture of a dog and one that captures everything there is to love about the . That's y secret to getting those coveted action shots. When you photograph a person, you could tell the what to do, which is not so ething you could do with pets. So, one of the first things I do is sit on the floor with the pups, and I play with the . I want to know their personality, and what akes the happy. I tailor to the , and they give e the best of the , in return."

González gave the best of herself last ti e she was visiting fa ily in Puerto Rico. It was there that she developed the concept of Pawlendar 2022, a calendar featuring rescue dogs (known as satos) and she partnered with United for a Cause Foundation to bring it to life. The sale of Pawlendar 2022 raised al ost $20,000 for area ani al shelters that had housed the calendar stars featured in each onth’s spread. Fro the Yunque rainforest to the beaches of Vieques, the stray dogs of Puerto Rico had their o ent in the sun, and hopefully a better chance at finding a forever ho e, thanks to her efforts. González has another Pawlendar underway for 2023, and so e ti e on her schedule to shoot a portrait of that beloved dog who takes you for a walk every day. The G Dog W The grumpy romance between Twixie and Cowboy is not an unusual tale. We could even say that it was love at first sniff! It all started when a 3 year old Twixie and a 2 year old Cowboy met at a Brussels Griffon meetup in Florida in Feb of 2021. “They got along really well from the beginning and looked so cute together! They even held paws at lunch afterward!” explained Tara and Makayla, the mamagers of the two love birds. After that, the girls decided that their pups should date. Cowboy soon asked Twixie to go to the Griff prom with him, and that’s where he proposed. Naturally, the wedding was next! From designer gowns, and designer cake, to a full on wedding ceremony, with an officiant, Twixie and Cowboy’s wedding was no different than a human wedding. The weekend long event featured a red carpet, catered food, a cocktail bar, and a wedding party, with bridesmaids and groomsmen. There were over 70 RSVPs, and over 40 Griffons from 10 different states, in attendance. The wedding outfits were custom designed by Lynne Correia from Lil' Pup Shop. The dress had a detachable long train offering two different looks; one for the ceremony and one for playtime. The four-legged guests enjoyed a meal of puppy chow from Vestals Catering, puppuccino bar and activities including a ball pit. The puptials cost about $25,000.

as well as a

Grumpy Wedding "The weekend kicked off with our rehearsal dinner at Odyssey Pets, the wedding was hosted at Twixie's house, the after pawty was at Mutts Cantina, and, the morning after Brunch was at The Aussie Grind." explained the girls. “Having the whole wedding party come down the grand staircase aisle was amazing, and the ceremony was so much fun and hilarious! The wedding was officiated and they commenced their marriage with bone broth! Everyone got along really well and one pup even decided to take a dip in the pool! We also raised over $2,000 for the National Brussels Griffon Rescue League. ” explained Tara. “The whole wedding process, even the planning, was so much fun! We planned the wedding a few months prior to the wedding date and were so excited when the weekend finally came! It was so fun getting all the dog pictures on the red carpet! The day of the wedding is still one of the best days both Cowboy and I had ever experienced together." explained Makayla. But, of course, it didn’t stop at the wedding. The couple honeymooned during the South Florida Griff meetup, right after the wedding. And, Twixie and Cowboy will be attending the upcoming Griff Prom in LA, this September, as a married couple. The Most Expensive Pet Wedding of All Time In 2014, there was another dog wedding in New York that made headlines for being the most expensive pet wedding of all time. Coton de Tulear named Baby Hope Diamond got married to a tie-dyed poodle named Chilly Pasternak. After they got hitched, the couple was presented with a Guinness World Record in the category of Most Expensive Pet Wedding, at $158,187.26. Some even say that the actual price tag of the event was $250,000. Considering that a 1996 cat wedding in Thailand which rang in at $16,241 was the previous record holder, Baby Hope and Chilly easily pawed their way into the record book. So how does a doggy wedding add up to $250,000? No expense was spared for this black-tie gala, held at the Jumeirah Essex House Hotel at Central Park. The ceremony was conducted by a celebrity officiant Triumph the Insult Comic Dog, and their team included Harriette Rose Katzs, a celebrity wedding planner, a “lighting guru” and highly touted chefs for the reception. Chilly and Baby Hope Diamond were decked out in a designer tux and gown. Baby Hope Diamond's couture gown reportedly cost $6,000, alone, which was designed by Henry Roth, a wedding couturier. Baby Hope Diamond’s collar also looked like it was made of real diamonds. And, let's not forget that a seven-piece human orchestra played them down the aisle. The luxury goods and services that went into the wedding were all donated. Guests bought tickets for the Manhattan fundraiser. The extravagant wedding, organized by Baby Hope Diamond's owner, Wendy Diamond, was all for a good cause. According to the Huffington Post, the promotional event raised $50,000 and gained international attention for the Humane Society of New York.

Breed Highlight: Brussels Griffon

84

The Griffon Bruxellois The Griffon Bruxellois or Brussels Griffon is a breed of toy dog, named for their city of origin of Brussels, Belgium. The Griffon Bruxellois may refer to three different breeds, the Griffon Bruxellois, the Griffon Belge and the Petit Brabançon, which have descended from a dog called a Smousje; a rough coated, small terrierlike dog. In Belgium, coachmen were so fond of their alert little Griffons d'Ecurie that in the 19th century, they bred their Griffons with imported toy dogs. Breeding with the Pug and King Charles Spaniel brought about the current breed type, but also brought the short black coat that led to the Petits Brabançon. Brussels Griffon is known for their big personality that comes in a 7 to 12 pound package. This humanlike toy of complex character has enough personality for 10 ordinary dogs. A sensitive companion for discerning grownups, the Brussels Griffon is smart, devoted, and comically self-important. The Griff's big black eyes, coupled with a fringed beard and mustache covering his short muzzle, gives him the air of a worldly, French-speaking philosopher. Griffs come in four colors: red, black-andreddish-brown, black and tan, and black. They come in two coats: smooth coats, like a Pug, or rough coats, like a Schnauzer. Griffs are alert, sociable, and easily trained. They do really well in agility training, and make great dog athletes.

BREED OVERVIEW GROUP: Toy HEIGHT: 7 to 10 inches WEIGHT: 8-12 pounds COAT: Medium: Rough or Smooth COLOR: Red, Beige, Black, Black & Tan, and Mixed LIFE EXPECTANCY: 12 to 15 years

The Griff's Story & Rise to Fame

Courtesy of the American Kennel Club Library and Archives

Griffon-type dogs were well known in Europe for centuries. For instance, the Van Eyck’s celebrated 1434 portrait of the “Arnolfini Couple” features a small, griffon-type dog with a long muzzle. But, the Griff’s story begins in Brussels, Belgium’s capital city, in the early 1800s. It was then that the Griff began his rise from rough-and-tumble rodent chaser to a sophisticated laptop companion. The coachmen of Brussels commonly kept small terrier-type dogs in their stables to control rodents.

These were typically Affenpinscher-like dogs known as “Griffons d’Ecurie,” or “wire-coated stable dogs.” The hack drivers experimented with various crosses to improve their dogs. And while there are no official records of these breedings, dog experts have surmised that the Pug, English Toy Spaniels, an old Belgian breed called the Brabancon, and perhaps even Yorkshire Terrier, were all part of the genetic mix that produced the Brussels Griffon that we know, and love today.

The turning point of Griff history came in the 1870s, when the dog-loving Henrietta Maria, Queen of the Belgians, took a liking to the breed. The Queen, a dog enthusiast who visited the annual dog shows religiously, became a breeder and booster of Griffon Bruxellois, giving them fame and popularity. The royal boost received by the breed led to international interest, and Griffs were exported to England and America. The first Griffon Bruxellois was registered in 1883 in the first volume of Belgium's Kennel Club studbook, the Livre des Origines SaintHubert (LOSH). And, the AKC registered its first Griff in 1910. As is the case with so many European breeds, the two world wars decimated the Griff population. If not for the dedication of U.S. and British enthusiasts, the breed might not have survived. The Griffon Bruxellois grew in popularity further in the late 19th century with both workers and noblemen in Belgium. And in 1997, the Brussels Griffon won millions of new fans when a spicy Griff named Jill upstaged Jack Nicholson in the hit movie "As Good As It Gets".
