Letter from the Editor

Woof, and welcome back to another issue of DOGUE! For those who are new to our publication or community— Welcome! We are a group of dog moms who live and breath dogs and fashion. We started our digital dog fashion magazine in 2019, on Instagram, and then created a real, human-size, print version of the magazine, inspired by Vogue, in 2021. Dog news is our news! Here, we explore dog fashion, news, trends, and lifestyles of pups from all over the world. This summer was all about weddings and the Barbie movie, at least in the dogs' world. In this issue, we explore the new Barkie craze that took over the world, and then we fly to Kent to meet a real-life Barkie girl, by the name of Willow. Like Barbie, the 5 lb Chihuahua loves to wear pink, and has her own closet of matching accessories. We sat down with Leone Galler to learn more about her glamorous fashion Chihuahua and English lifestyle. From Furdrobe's new collection of designer couture dresses, inspired by Willow, to Maggie & Co's new wedding line, we share the latest dog couture and our favorite looks of the season. So before we jump into the pumpkin season, with full force, let's do a proper goodbye to the Barbie summer of 2023, first. After all, it was so very pink. Till next time, XOXO,

Willow's Barkie World

The Return of the Barbie Doll The Barbie doll was revolutionairy when it launched in the United States in 1959. But a generation later, it had a huge backlash. Many got angry with the "perfect looking" doll for being too beauty oriented, materialistic and simply, "too perfect" promoting an impossible standard for girls and women to follow. Indeed, the doll was surrounded by lots of controversy over the years, from critics who said that the doll was too vain, too thin, too idealistic, too impossible, too sexy, too pink. This year, with the launch of the new Barbie movie, produced and starred by Margot Robbie, and directed by Greta Gergwig, the doll made a major comeback, and not just in the United States, but all over the world.

Story by OP The doll that we know as Barbie, was created by an American Jewish businesswoman and inventor, Ruth Handler, who also founded Mattel; one of the most successful toy manufacturing companies in the world, with her husband and his friend. The doll was inspired by her daughter, Barbara, who enjoyed playing with paper fashion dolls. Ruth realized that there was a huge gap in the female doll market. While boys had a large selection of toys to choose from, from cars, trains, airplanes and robots, girls only had one option- a baby doll. Baby doll was a traditional female toy, which represented it's culture and times. It was also designed to train little girls to become mothers. During her travels, Ruth came across Bild Lilli; a small, female figurine made of polystyrene, which also came accompanied by stylish clothes and matching accessories. But, Lilli was not a doll, and was not intended for children. It was a collectible, created for the fans of a popular German newspaper comic cartoon.

Lilli was a controvercial female character created by Reinhard Beuthien for the tabloid newspaper Bild, who was described as "quickwitted and assertive, and was often scantily dressed and never shy of being seductive and bold."

Handler thought it would make a perfect fashion doll for girls, and so she acquired the rights to Bild Lilli in 1964. Mattel recreated the doll in vinyl, revised the doll's design and called it Barbie, after Ruth's daughter. The doll was accompanied by fun, tiny sized accessories, and a slogan "You Can Be Anything." Unlike Bild Lilli, Barbie was created specifically for little girls who wanted to play dress up. Unlike baby dolls, Barbie was a grown up female, who came with her own closet, and universe. Indeed, Barbie lived in her own little world, where she could do anything she wanted. From the very beginning Barbie was an empowering female icon, which had become perhaps the most powerful feminist icon we've ever had.

I think that eventually women realized that Barbie did more good than evil. She taught little girls that they could be more than just mothers. It empowered girls and women alike to create a world of their own., beginning with their own outfits. It showed us that we could be doctors, and pilots and business women. It showed us that we could have our own homes, cars and horses, and that we could color them pink. Over the years, Barbie had grown from a fashion doll to an empire of dolls with different looks and characters. I remember the first time that I discovered a Barbie doll. It was on my TV screen during a Barbie commercial. It was the Glitter Hair Barbie of 1994 starring Mila

Kunis. Oh how I wanted this beautiful doll. The only problem was that the doll was not sold in our country, at that time. I had to wait for about a year for one of our friends to travel abroad and bring me one of these magical dolls back. I remember how excited I was to get my hands on my first American doll. I'll never forget the thrill of opening that beautiful little pink box with the word BARBIE on it. It was so much more than just a doll for me. It was like a female trophy that confirmed that I was beautiful, and powerful, too. And, that a pink world was in fact possible. I was the first one with a Barbie doll in my town so girls gathered in my house to play Barbie. Barbie will forever remain one of my first loves and inspirations.

Willow's Barkie World Little Willow may just be a teeny-tiny Barkie girl, or a 4 lb Chihuahua, but she's quickly taking over the Kenergy of her household, and perhaps, even in all of Kent! Born in the UK, and the youngest of three fur siblings, it didn't take Willow long to become the star of her family. With her own closet, and luxury wardrobe, Willow is a full-time fashion model. And like a Barbie doll, she comes with her own matching accessories! Her two older brothers, Reggie and Romeo, have started the Instagram fashion trend, posing with their fancy silk bows from Furdrobe. Together, the two pups have paved the way for their little sister. Willow started dressing up for the gram when she was just 3 months old. Today, at 15 months, Willow is an Instagram fashion model and an ambassador to brands like Furdrobe, Jordan Valentino the label, Posh Puppy and Specs of Sass. For this issue, we sat down with Leone Galler, Willow's momager, to learn more about her Barkie girl. When did you become a dog mom? I got my first dog, Reggie, in 2016. He is a mix of Chihuahua and Bichon. Then I got Romeo, a Chihuahua, and then came Willow, a long haired Chihuahua, because I wanted a girl. You have three Chihuahuas. Were you looking for this breed in particular? If so, why? Yes, I became pretty fascinated with Chihuahuas after watching the Beverly Hills Chihuahua. I find them adorable and perfect for my house size. How did you get into fashion? I was always into fashion, ever since I can remember. I would spend all my wages on Oxford street. I also used to work as a window dresser in London at different fashion stores including Harrods. I was in charge of displaying all the latest styles. I did it for about twelve years, before retiring with my pups.

Tell us about some of your fashion inspirations. I started going clubbing when I was fourteen years old and I remember it was exactly when Madonna came out with her song Holiday. I loved how she styled her clothes and jewelry, in her video, and that's when I realized that I wanted to do this for a living. So, I went to London to work in fashion. Today your three dogs are Instagram fashion models. How did that happen? I watched the world's most expensive presents and came across Furdrobe. I had purchased the fancy bows for my boys who were going to attend a Chihuahua festival. Romeo ended up winning the title of "The Most Handsome Chihuahua" and Reggie came third. And that's how dog fashion became a hobby. Your dogs are not just fashion models, they are also pioneers, in a way, since Romeo was one of the first dogs on Instagram that we know of, to have a virtual dog wedding! Yes, Romeo married Delilah back in September of 2020. We thought it would be fun to marry our dogs. So we had a virtual dog wedding on Instagram, with couture outfits, and lots of dog guests. Tell us more about Little Willow. And, does she get along with her brothers? Yes, Willow loves her brothers. She is especially attached to Romeo. She follows him everywhere. He's the one who taught her how to bark. Willow also loves the camera. As soon as I go upstairs to her closet, she gets all excited because she knows she is going to pose for treats. She loves getting all glammed up, almost as much as she loves to play in the dirt. Because of this, she has more baths than both of her brothers. She's still a puppy so she has plenty of energy. She'll jump on the boys' heads when they sleep because she wants to play with them. I call her Little Willow. I was so honoured that Rachelle from Furdrobe made a beautiful dress and named it after her. To learn more about Willow, find her on Instagram @littlewillow10.

The Ameri an Purse Pups The Chihuahua is a tiny dog with a huge personality. A national symbol of Mexico, these alert and amusing "purse dogs" stand among the oldest breeds of the Americas, with a lineage going back to the ancient kingdoms of pre-Columbian times. The Chihuahua[a] (or Spanish: Chihuahueño) is a Mexican breed of toy dog. It is named for the Mexican state of Chihuahua and is among the smallest of all dog breeds. Chihuahuas are tiny pups weighing no more than 6 pounds, but they possess loyalty, charm, and big-dog attitude. These balanced and graceful dogs of terrier-like demeanor, have a rounded "apple" head which is a breed signature. Their erect ears and luminous eyes are acutely expressive. Coats come in many colors and patterns, and can be long or short. Compact and confident, Chihuahuas make ideal city pets. They are too small for roughhousing with kids, and special care must be taken of them in cold weather, but Chihuahuas are adaptable, as long as they get lots of quality time in their preferred lap. DNA studies suggest that these native American dogs entered North America from Siberia roughly 10,000 years ago. The American Kennel Club first registered a Chihuahua in 1904, Midget, owned by H. Raynor of Texas.

BREED OVERVIEW GROUP: Toy HEIGHT: 5 to 8 inches WEIGHT: 6 lbs and under COAT: Smooth (long and short) COLOR: Many colors and patterns LIFE EXPECTANCY: 14 to 16 years

The Treasured Pups of An ient Azte s

Likenesses of Chihuahua-like dogs decorate the artifacts of lost civilizations around the world. How the Chihuahua type first came to the peoples of Mexico, however, is a secret of prehistory. We do know that when the Toltecs held sway in Mexico about a thousand years ago, their breed of choice was the Techichi, a larger, heavier ancestor of today’s Chi. The Aztecs conquered the Toltecs in the 12th century. Historians credit the Aztecs with refining the Techichi into a smaller, lighter dog.

By the time Spanish conquistadors toppled Aztec civilization in the 1500s, the Techichi was so integral to Aztec culture it was considered one of Montezuma’s fabled treasures. But the hardy little dogs lived on in remote villages and, in the mid-1800s, when Americans began to take an interest in the breed, they found many specimens in the State of Chihuahua. So it was that this survivor of two lost civilizations gained worldwide fame as the Chihuahua. The first AKC-registered Chihuahua, a little guy named Beppie, was recorded in 1908.

The famous bandleader Xavier Cugat did much to popularize Chihuahuas in the 1940s and 50s. More recently, these natural performers stole the show in “Beverly Hills Chihuahua,” “Legally Blonde,” and “Sex and the City.” The minor-league baseball team of El Paso, Texas, is also named the Chihuahuas.

World Famous Chihuahuas The world shortest dog is a Chihuahua from Orlando, Florida. Pearl had been crowned with the tile of the world’s shortest dog living, according to Guinness World Records. Pearl is only 3.59 inches tall — slightly shorter than a Popsicle stick. Pearl descended from one legendary Guinness World Record-holding canine, Milly, owned by Vanesa Semler of Dorado, Puerto Rico. The world's smallest dog based on length is a female Chihuahua by the name of Brandy owned by Paulette Keller of Largo, Florida. Brandy is 6 inches from tip of nose to tip of tail, and weighs only 2 pounds. Spike, a Chihuahua mix from Ohio, was crowned the world’s oldest living dog, per the Guinness World Records. He was 23 years and 43 days old. Since then, a 30-year-old dog from Portugal stole the title. Bobi is a purebred Rafeiro do Alentejo from Portugal.
