The New Generation of Dog Fashion

La Vie en Rose Mia is an upcoming Pekingese fashion model who lives in between Miami and Cape Cod. Her latest "Boss Babe" photoshoot has been turning heads ever since we featured her photos on COVERDOGS. Mia's DOGUE cover has already been re-posted by Moshiqa and Hilton Pets, with hashtag "Loves it". With her designer wardrobe, and posh looks, in many ways, Mia is the Paris Hilton of the dog world. Managed by a full-time dog mom, Mia's mamager organizes regular photoshoots for her, with designer clothes and Miami's top photographers. For this issue, we sat down with Mia's team to learn more about her story and the Moshiqa photoshoot that inspired this issue. How did Mia come into your life? "My friend from College posted a photo of two Parti Pekingese puppies on Instagram and I instantly fell in love. She connected me with a breeder from Oklahoma and that’s how we found Mia, a 5 lb Sleeve Pekingese. Before Mia, I had a beautiful Shih Tzu girl who sadly crossed over the rainbow bridge a few months before Mia was born. After some time mourning I knew it was time to bring another pup into our home to love and give a wonderful life to. The second I saw Mia, she jumped into my arms and started to kiss me, so it was love at first sight for her too. My husband wasn’t sure if he was ready to love another dog yet, but the instant that Mia jumped into his arms, he fell in love with her too. And, now she has him wrapped around her little paws." Why a Pekingese? “I've always had ancient Asian breeds: Shih Tzu and Lhaso Apso, and had always been intrigued by the Pekingese due to their looks and extreme fluffiness. I wanted a breed whose sole purpose in life has been companionship. As a full time dog mom, I wanted to give my next fur baby all the love and attention that I had, and receive it right back. And, the Pekingese is a perfect match for this.”

How did Mia get into fashion and modeling? "We were asked to let Mia take part in a Mercedes Benz photoshoot to advertise a new model electric car for a local dealership. She was very comfortable wearing clothing and blossomed before the camera. I knew she would become a mini fashion queen some day, from that moment on! I discovered Coverdogs on Instagram and absolutely fell in love with the DOGUE fashion magazine. I never imagined that Mia would become a Cover Girl, though." Tell us about your Moshiqa shoot. What inspired this look? “I’ve been a lifelong fan of Paris Hilton. She was quite literary my childhood idol! When I saw she had designed a line of all pink pet clothing with Moshiqa I instantly ordered the pink gown! It screamed “Mia” at me when I saw it. I knew it would take an overly confident and extremely outgoing dog to be able to pull off such an iconic dress and do Paris’ work proud, and Mia was a perfect fit! The inspiration behind the dress is really all Paris. The dress reminded me of the book I have kept on a coffee table for a long time now which is Paris Hilton’s “Confessions of a Heiress”. The dress she is wearing is almost like a human version of the dress she designed for dogs. My heart just melted imagining the cuteness! We found Marietta, the owner of @workfortreats in a local Miami magazine which had listed the top photographers in the greater area. She was extremely nice and seemed excited to do the shoot. We had booked 3 hours but Mia was done in under an hour, and seemed, once again, to just love the camera. She was perfect for the shoot, and acted like a true professional model.” But, fashion is not everything for Mia. The little pup is also training to become a therapy dog. "She wants to continue our family fur baby tradition of volunteering at law schools in Boston. Anxiety relief and suicide prevention is an important role that we have no doubt Mia will become an expert at. She is the happiest dog imaginable, with an overly animated expression. She is so excited and full of life that it rubs off on everyone around her; and it’s almost impossible to not smile or laugh in Mia’s presence.” To learn more about Mia, visit her profile @empress_mia_thepeke.

Breed Highlight: The Pekingese

The Lion Dogs of Chinese Royalty The Pekingese breed was also referred to as Lion Dogs, Sun Dogs, and Sleeve Dogs. Held sacred in ancient China, these toy pups have been handed down through generations. Earliest known record of Pekingese existence is traceable to the Tang dynasty of the 8th century. The very old strains, held only by the emperial family, were kept pure, and the theft of one of these sacred dogs was punishable by death. The Pekingese is a compact toy companion of regal bearing, and one of several breeds created for the ruling classes of ancient China. Pekingese are toy dogs weighing up to 14 pounds. Their coat is longest at the neck and shoulders, giving them their famous 'lion's mane.' Their large, short-muzzled head is a wider-thanlong 'envelope shaped' rectangle, and the eyes are large, dark, and sparkly. A unique feature of Pekes is their effortless 'rolling' gait. Pekes are charming and confident companions who develop a tight bond with their favorite humans. Bred to live in palaces, they can be as serenely independent as the emperors who owned them. They're also opinionated and alert and make great watchdogs!

BREED OVERVIEW GROUP: Toy HEIGHT: 6 to 9 inches WEIGHT: 6 to 14 lbs COAT: Long Double Coat COLOR: Biscuit, Black, Tan, Cream, Fawn, Red, White & More! LIFE EXPECTANCY: 12 to 14 years

The Breed Created by Buddha

The Pekingese is a breed of toy dog, originating in China. The breed was favored by royalty of the Chinese Imperial court as a companion dog, and its name refers to the city of Peking where the Forbidden City is located. According to a Chinese legend, the Pekingese was created by the Buddha, in his attempt to shrink a lion down to dog size. And, many would say that he had succeeded. The Peke was likely bred down to toy size from a larger dog, probably not a lion, and probably not by the Buddha, himself, but by his earthly servants.

For many centuries, Chinese nobles were preoccupied with the breeding of these flat-faced lapdogs. The Peke, Pug, and Shih Tzu are surviving samples of their handiwork. The Pekingese's flat face and large eyes are some of the breed's most obvious characteristics. Unlike other breeds, it could only be owned by members of the Chinese Imperial Palace. By the late 1890s, Pekes had arrived in America, and were registered by the AKC in 1906.

Six years later, the breed made headlines when a Pekingese was one of the dogs to survive the sinking of the Titanic. Only three dogs survived the sinking ship: two Pomeranians and one Pekinese by the name of Sun Yat Sen. A British soldier, Captain John Hart Dunne came across a lone Pekingese, which he brought back to England. It was the first of the breed to survive the voyage. He presented her to Queen Victoria, who named it Looty. Around the turn of the century, Pekingese dogs became popular in Western countries. They were owned by such arbiters of fashion as Alexandra of Denmark, wife of Edward VII, and Elsie de Wolfe, popular American interior decorator. Later, they were owned by Rumer Godden, who wrote in her autobiography that "I do not like dogs except very large ones and one or two with such character that they cannot be denied; Pekingese are not dogs but something more" and by Auberon Waugh, who on one occasion fancifully boasted that one of his dogs shared his love of The Daily Telegraph and hatred for The Sunday Times. In 2021 a Pekingese named Wasabi won the Westminster dog show. It was the fourth time a Pekingese won Best in Show at Westminster.
