Woof, and Welcome back to another issue of DOGUE! This month, we feature one of the most stylish models on Instagram: a little Dachshund rescue by the name of Pops. She's been gifted items from Hugo Boss and Burberry and have worked with many global brands including Disney, Sony Pictures, ZooPlus, Warner Brothers, Amazon, SSense, E.L.F, TikTok, Baby Milo, Sky Mobile, Spotify and Pokémon. In this issue, we share Pops' rags to riches story, as well as some of her most iconic fashion looks. We take an insider look into Funari's latest dog couture collection, as featured in NYFW. She shares her vision with us, her inspiration, and her NYFW experience. We also feature the latest capsule collection of an Italian luxury knitwear brand, Alanui, in collaboration with Poldo Dog Couture. FUNARI's NYFW 2022 TAKEOVER Funari New York returned to runway this season for the NYFW. The runway was full of color; unique textures, patterns and prints, but most importantly, DOGS! The collection was shown at the iconic Sony Hall theatre reminiscent of the glorious Gatsby days, with gold flecks, shining on the ceiling, reflecting each outfit revealed on the runway that night. Each model was accompanied by an extravagant pup, dressed in matching couture apparel, showcasing Spring/ Summer 2023 collection.
WHAT INSPIRED THIS COLLECTION? I was inspired by the Elizabethan and Regency time period where dresses were well-made and woman were sexy and voluptuous. I watched Bridgerton and loved it so much! I felt like it had a big influence on me. I wanted to create a line that would feel like a love story and encompass that luxurious yet effortless feel in my brand; to allow women to feel that royalty beauty and glam. I wanted to empower women to feel good about themselves, no matter what size or shape they are. WAS THIS YOUR FIRST TIME AT NYFW?
The must-have FUNARI looks included the Kaftan, palazzo pants, jackets, tunic tops, suiting jacket, pencil dress and their signature sportswear pieces for traveling. The line was colorful, comfortable and elegant. The show set the tone for NYFW and made history for Eco Fashion of Canine Couture, as it was the very first Eco-Sustainable Canine Couture Fashion from NYC. For this issue, we sat down with Janelle Funari herself to learn more about her latest collection, her inspirations, and her overall NYFW 2022 experience.

My first time was at NYFW 2013 at the Affinia Hotel, but back then they only allowed one dog per show. So, my dog, Maxine, walked the runway 3 times! WE SAW THAT YOUR COLLECTION WAS FEATURED ON TIMESQUARE! HOW DID THAT FEEL? It felt magical and so exciting to be on a digital billboard! I loved how the photos turned out. My first billboard was a large paper billboard on 47th street which went up during the pandemic. This board was very symbolic for me, and full of positive energy. It felt like it was a great day to show NYC and the world that we are back, and that dreams come true!

Today Pops is one of Instagram’s most popular dog models. She’s been gifted items from Hugo Boss and Burberry and have worked with many global brands including Disney, Sony Pictures, ZooPLus, Warner Brothers, Amazon, SSense, E.L.F, TikTok, Baby Milo, Sky Mobile, Spotify, Pokémon and heaps more! But, what’s less known is that Pops is a real rags to riches story, who went from a disaster to a Happily Ever After. For this issue, we sat down with Pops' mamager, Charlie, to learn more about her rescue story. How did Pops come into your life? Pops was an accidental rescue. I was lead to believe from an online ad that I was rehoming a family dog due to a divorce, but when I arrived I quickly realised it was actually an illegal puppy farm. As I went to leave I noticed a little dachshund whimpering inside a reptile tank and knew she needed help fast. I offered the absolute monster of a man running things £400 and he let me take Pops. I immediately took her to the vet and came to realize she was very sick. She was beaten, malnourished, burned with cigarettes, had teeth missing, infected paws, mites, ear infections and a large wound on her stomach from a back street spay. My vet said she was failing to thrive and was unlikely to survive, but we went ahead with all the procedures and meds and slowly but surely, Pops started to blossom! It’s taken many years to build her confidence and teach her that not all humans are bad, but she was worth it all! The puppy mill was closed down and they were prosecuted, but Pops will carry emotional and physical scars with her forever. She’s been my whole heart since the moment I laid eyes on her and we are utterly obsessed with each other! She rescued me just as much as I rescued her. Is Pop your first pup? I got Pops on my own. Although I grew up surrounded by dogs, she was the first animal I’d ever been completely responsible for. We lived together in London, just us two girls and had a wonderful time. She would come to work with me and I’d cycle around with her in my bike basket, it was bliss!

From a disaster to a Happily Ever After I then met my now husband, who came with an insta famous pug @thepuggysmalls. It was so ironic that people warned me I’d be single forever because I was too obsessed with my dog, and then I met Nick who was as obsessed with his pooch, if not more! Pops and Puggy have been besties ever since and are inseparable. When we left the city, we rescued our crazy Pomeranian @itspomegranate and this year we added another pug to our pack and named him Pugyay West! What inspired the name Pops? It was all a happy accident! The original dog I was going to adopt was called Poppy. So when I rushed Pops to the vets after saving her, they needed to know her name. In a panic all I could think of was Poppy, but decided to shorted it to Pops because it sounded more fierce and I couldn’t bear to give her a name from that evil place. Pops is such a cool name, its short, sassy, sweet and memorable, just like her! How old is Pop? And, how big is she? Pops is almost 11! She’s a miniature dachshund but is exceptionally small for the breed. She’s a delicate little lady with an XL attitude. How does Pop celebrate Summer and Autumn? Pops is a sun worshipper and loves to basque in the rays in the garden. She also loves BBQ season as she knows there’s always a sausage on offer! But, I think Autumn is her favorite. We recently started lighting our open fire and it’s a pleasure to see her curled up on a sheepskin in her happy place. She also loves to wear clothes and her Autumn wardrobe is pretty impressive! Dog Couture of ALANUI Italian luxury knitwear brand Alanui finally launched a designer collection of knitwear for pups! The former Vogue Japan fashion editor collaborated with Poldo Dog Couture to create a capsule collection of her signature boho sweaters. The colorful fringed cardis are pawfect for fashion-fuward pets, and wanderlust pups. “I’m a big dog lover,” says Carlotta Oddi, co-founder and creative director of Alanui. I’ve always designed mini Alanui cardigans for my own dog, so this season I decided it was finally time to allocate a small collection to her and all her four-legged friends. Paldo Dog Couture was the perfect partner for this adventure.”

Alanui x Poldo Capsule Collection Alanui was founded in 2016 by Milanese siblings Carlotta and Nicolò Oddi. “[In 2015], I was working in the family business — water technologies — and during August, when Italy closes, I rented a house in West Hollywood for three weeks,” Nicolò told Mr. Porter in 2019. Carlotta came to visit on her way to Hawaii and the two of them made a pilgrimage to the historic Rose Bowl Flea Market in Pasadena, where Carlotta — then a fashion editor for Vogue Japan — bought an oversized wrap cardigan from the 1970s. She took the cardigan with her to Hawaii, and when she returned she could not stop raving about its style and versatility. The following year, the brand of Alanui was born. Alanui which means “large path” in Hawaiian combines the retro style of SoCal with the Italian luxury knowhow. These eclectic Bohemian knits have since been spotted on everyone from editors to influencers like Chiara Ferragni and Annabel Rosendahl. With Poldo Dog Couture — whose past partnerships include Missoni, Moncler, and DSquared2, to name a few — the Oddis designed a six-piece collection consisting of three jacquard-knit wool sweaters and three transparent raincoats. The sweaters feature signature Alanui intarsia patterns and fringed collars, while the raincoats are embellished with classic bandana designs in black, yellow, and red. The sweaters come in three color patterns; earthy beige, vibrant teal, and bright orange, and retail for $535, while the raincoats go for $540. The Iconic Dachshund The famously long, low silhouette of Dachshund has made him a superstar of the canine kingdom. The word 'icon' may be overused, but the Dachshund, with his unmistakable long-backed body, little legs, and big personality, is considered an icon of purebred dogdom. Dachshunds come in two sizes and in three coat types of various colors and patterns. The standard-sized Dachshund is usually between 16 to 32 pounds, and the miniature version is 11 pounds and under. Dachshunds come in one of three coat types: smooth, wirehaired, or longhaired. Although Dachshunds aren't built for distance running, leaping, or strenuous swimming, these tireless hounds are game for anything. They’re smart and vigilant, with a big-dog bark, and they make great watchdogs. Bred to be an independent hunter of dangerous prey, they can be brave to the point of rashness, and a bit stubborn, but their endearing nature and unique look has won millions of hearts the world over.

The History of Badger Hunters
The Dachshund was bred in Germany some 600 years ago. "Dach" means badger, in German, and "hund" means dog. As the breed name suggests, the Dachshund was built to hunt badgers. For a dog of any size, a badger is a formidable adversary, weighing anywhere from 25 to 40 pounds, with razor-sharp teeth and claws. The cleverness, courage, perseverance, and strength that are hallmarks of today’s Dachshund were first bred into his long-ago ancestors to best equip them for battling a deadly foe. The little dog’s surprisingly loud, houndy bark is also a throwback to his working roots: It allowed the Dachshund’s aboveground human hunting partner to mark his hound’s underground location. The Dachshund has short, strong legs that enable the dog to dig out prey and go inside burrows. Dachshunds of various sizes were bred to work on different kinds of quarry. Larger versions of the breed were used to chase deer and fox. Smaller Dachshunds were bred for hunting hares and ferrets. Packs of Dachshunds, according to breed authorities, were often used on wild boar. The three varieties of Dachshund, smooth, wire, and long-coated, originated at different times. The smooth was the first and arose from a mixture of a miniature French Pointer and a Pinscher.
In addition to the breed’s short, smooth coat, selective breeding produced types with wire coats for work in thorny brier patches, and long coats for cold climates. By the late 1800s, the process of standardizing the breed according to size, coat, and color varieties had begun. Admitted to the AKC Stud Book in 1885, their popularity in America was immediate and enduring. Today, the Dachshund is one of the most popular AKC breeds.
