Page 1

Letter from the Editor Apparently "Woof" is old news, as some pups have already started talking! So, "Welcome Back" to our monthly issue of DOGUE, and the last issue of the year! Winter is just around the corner, but in many ways, it is already here. Christmas parades have already begun, Christmas shopping has already started, Christmas songs have taken over the radio, and in some parts of the world, it is already snowing. Christmas is a season of glitter, glamour, and miracles. And, as we get into the Christmas spirit, we are taking our pups with us! In this issue, we share our favorite finds of the season, and put together an Ultimate Holiday Gift Guide for Dogs! We believe that it’s what pups would ask Santa, if they could talk! This month, we sat down with Chris and Sarah, the humans behind the popular dog sensation of two talking Corgis: Hammy & Olivia. They share how Hammy & Olivia found their voices, and their swift rise to fame. We even get a glimpse inside their elaborate creative process. We also uncover the magic behind the Fairy Corgi Breed, and share a fairytale that we found about Two Corgis. As always, we include the latest of dog fashion from Barker's Bazbark, the latest of dog sports from Spawrts Illustrated, and the latest of dog travel from National Pawgraphic. We would also like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year! May this time be filled with miracles, sparkle, and lots of Holiday cheer! Till next time, XOXO,

A Miracle on Once upon a time, a Las Vegas Corgi breeder invited some friends over to play with his puppies. That day, a young couple, by the name of Chris and Sarah, ended up adopting one of those puppies: a baby girl by the name of Olivia. And, then two years later, another Corgi, found his way into their hearts. Hammy and Olivia are both Winter babies. Olivia was born on 12/21, the first official day of Winter, and Hammy was born on 12/23, just a few days before Christmas. Hammy and Olivia’s big personalities filled their home rather quickly. And, then, one very special Christmas morning, a miracle happened: the pups started talking, and they haven’t stopped ever since! Today, Hammy and Olivia are well known actors with over 400 videos, and over 6 million of combined social media followers, including Instagram, TikTok and YouTube. This Christmas season, we sat down with Chris and Sarah to learn more about their magical pups. How did Hammy and Olivia find their voices? “I think every dog owner, at some point, envisions what their dog might sound like, if they could talk, and we were no different. We started to really bring their voices and personalities to life while we were quarantining together. We saw Olivia as a modern-day Cher Horowitz, from Clueless, and we always saw derpy Hammy as a dog version of Patrick Star, from SpongeBob SquarePants. Eventually, we started to include Hammy and Olivia in our everyday family decisions, and answer for them… Does that make us a little crazy? Maybe… but it’s a crazy we’ll gladly accept!” What does an average day look like for Hammy and Olivia? “Our entire day is built around the pups. Hammy will wake me up at 6:30am every day, by jumping on my belly and pawing my chest, which is his way of telling me it’s breakfast time. They’ll both get a nutritious meal around 7am, and a walk immediately after, to get an early dose of exercise.

26

Las Vegas Strip In Las Vegas, we have to be cognizant of the heat, so it’s important that the pups are walked before 8 am in the summer. Afterwards, they’ll lick whatever spoons were used for my daily yogurt bowl and take their morning naps. When they wake up from their morning naps around 11am and see us walk into the closet, they know it’s time to shoot a video for the day. They get excited to get dressed up because they know it’s treat time!” Can you share your funniest Hammy and Olivia story? “We have a neighborhood cat, by the name of Chloe, that has a really big crush on Hammy, and Hammy crushes on her too! It is the one animal that Hammy doesn’t bark at, and they kiss each other on the nose every time they see each other. It started off as a rendezvous that would only happen on our walks, and now Chloe comes to our house at night, sits on the fence, and waits for Hammy to come outside! It’s the most adorable thing in the world. If Olivia sees Chloe before Hammy, she’ll bark at her and shoo her away. It’s our pet version of Romeo and Juliet, and we crack up every time Hammy’s “girlfriend” comes to see him!” What advice would you have for someone looking to create a social media presence for their dogs or pets? “Start with being authentically you. You don’t need to start by making “talking dog” skits. We’ve learned over time that we subconsciously choose to “follow” someone on social media because we can either (a) learn from them (b) be entertained by them (c) connect with them on a level we relate to, or (d) escape to them, essentially forgetting about any personal troubles for a brief moment. Start by asking yourself which of these values you want to be to someone, and always use that as your North star whenever you get lost in creating your content.” [Full Interview continues on page. 70] On behalf of Hammy, Olivia, Chris, Sarah and the DOGUE team, we would like to wish everyone a very merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

10 FACTS ABOUT OLIVIA 01 02 03 04 05 06 07 08 09 10

She's 6 years old. She was born on 12/21, the first official day of Winter. Her nickname is “OSG” which stands for “Olivia Sweet Girl”. Whenever she leans on a pillow, we call it her “diva lean". Her favorite activity to do alone is sunbathe in the lounge chair. Her paws don’t touch the floor when she lays on her side! She absolutely hates skateboards and bicycles. She loves watching over the neighborhood from the window. She expects to finish every yogurt bowl in the house. The bed we sleep on is hers. If Hammy comes on it, she’ll growl at him! After a long walk, she dunks her entire face in a bowl of water, instead of drinking it.

10 FACTS ABOUT HAMMY 01 02 03 04 05 06 07 08 09 10

Hamilton is 4 years old. He was born on 12/23 and weighs 35 lbs. His breeder name was “Winston”. Born in North Carolina, he flew to Las Vegas with a “flight nanny”. Whenever he whips toys back and forth, we call it a “Hamnado”. He’s afraid of the ceiling fan! His favorite human snack is blueberries. He’ll go to sleep in the bathroom and will close the door behind him. He knows how to rollover. He can skateboard! When he’s tired, his lower body swings back and forth when he walks. We call it his “Thunder Wiggle”.

Breed Highlight: Corg 66

The Pembroke Welsh Corgi The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is a cattle herding dog breed that originated in Pembrokeshire, Wales. It is one of two breeds known as a Welsh Corgi. Pembroke Welsh Corgis descended from the Spitz family of dogs. The other is the Cardigan Welsh Corgi, which descend from the Teckel family of dogs, which comes from the same family as the Dachshund. Pembroke Welsh Corgis have been favored by British royalty for more than seventy years. They’re famous as the preferred breed of Queen Elizabeth II, who has owned more than 30 Royal Corgis during her reign. The Pembroke Welsh Corgi has been ranked 11th in Stanley Coren's The Intelligence of Dogs, which states that the breed is considered an excellent working dog. And, according to the American Kennel Club, Pembroke Welsh Corgis are one of the world’s most popular herding breeds, and in 2020 they were ranked 11th most popular dog breed. Among the most agreeable of all small house dogs, Corgis are strong, athletic, and lively. They’re bright, and sensitive dogs who enjoy play time with their humans, and respond well to training. As herders, bred to move cattle, they are fearless and independent. Corgis also make great watchdogs, because of their acute senses and their “big dog” bark. Families who can meet their need for activity and togetherness, will never find a more loyal, and loving pet.

BREED OVERVIEW HEIGHT: 10. 12 inches WEIGHT: Up to 30 lbs COAT: Short, double coat. COLOR: Fawn, Black, White, Tan, Sable, Red. LIFE EXPECTANCY: 12 to 13 years

The History of the Fairy Breed

According to the AKC, Corgis were brought to Wales from Northern Belgium in 1107 when Britain invited a community of master craftsmen from Belgium, to live and work in southwestern Wales. These people brought all they needed to re-create their agrarian way of life, which included the dogs that they bred to herd cattle and sheep. These sturdy, shortlegged herders were the foundation for the breed we now know as the Pembroke Welsh Corgi. The Pembroke has been a distinctly separate breed from the Cardigan Welsh Corgi since the late 1800s, but the two breeds are often intermingled. The Corgi Club was founded in December 1925 in Carmarthen, Carmarthenshire.

Pembrokes and Cardigans were officially recognized by the Kennel Club in 1928, and in 1934, the two breeds were recognized as separate and distinct. The world’s most famous Pembroke fan is Elizabeth II. The queen got her first Pembroke, Dookie, in 1933 and has not been without one, or more, ever since. Corgi in Welsh stands for “dwarf dog”. It is therefore not surprising that there's a lot of folklore surrounding the breed. According to the Welsh legend, the fairies and elves of Wales used Corgis to pull fairy coaches, work fairy cattle, and serve as the steed for fairy warriors. Corgis still have the marks of the “fairy saddle” over the shoulders in the Pembroke's coat.

The Fairy Tale of Two Corgis By Kim Campbell Thornton

Wales is a fairy tale country, with castles around every corner and elves or fairies behind every standing stone. It stands to reason, then, that Wales would have fairy tale dogs. Here then is the tale of how the Corgi came to be. Queen Mab clapped her hands, "I am bored" she cried. "Let us take our steeds and go for a ride". Instantly before the fairy queen appeared a small red-and-white dog wearing a gold collar and bell. On his back was a tiny saddle made of the finest leather and chased in silver. Similar dogs appeared to the other members of the fairy court. They each mounted their enchanted dogs, and led by Queen Mab and her huntsman, Dark Edric, they rode out of the hollow hills. By the light of the moon, they flew through the forests of Wales.

Suddenly, one of the fairies gave a cry. His steed had brushed against a trap set by poachers. Made of iron, its touch was deadly to fairy folk, and both the courier and his little dog were laid low by its power. The other fairies gathered round, yet keeping their distance lest they too be struck down by the cold bite of iron. "What should we do?" said Queen Mab "We cannot leave them here to die." A small, hesitant voice broke the silence that followed her question. A human boy peered from behind a tree, his frightened sister at his side. "If you please, your majesty, I can move the trap away so that it won't be touching them anymore." he said. "And my sister knows herbs. She may be able to ease their pain."

"What are you doing out at this time of night boy?" the queen demanded. "Do you not know that the night holds many dangers for mortals?"

And on Midsummer's Day, if the dogs were a little tired for once, as they so rarely were, the shepherds simply nodded their heads wisely.

"My father is a shepherd." the boy replied. "Our best ewe is lost, and without her we shall surely starve."

They knew that every Midsummer's Eve, the fairies returned to ride the Corgis so they would never forget where they came from.

"Heal my friends," the queen said, "and I shall repay you many times over." The boy and his sister tugged at the heavy trap until it was far enough away to do no harm. Then the girl gathered white oak bark and blackberry leaves. Wetting them in the stream, she made a soothing compress. With their rapid healing powers, the fairy and his dog steed were soon well again. "I promised you a reward, boy" Queen Mab said. Twice she rang the golden bell that hung around her dog's neck. Two red-and-white puppies appeared. They were low-set, strong and sturdy, with dark eyes that gleamed with intelligence. "These are the fairy dogs," Queen Mab said. "They are swift and clever and true, and they can herd cattle as well as sheep. Treat them well, and you shall never loose your livestock again." Then she clapped her hands and the entire fairy court disappeared, leaving behind only the two pups. The shepherd's family prospered, and the fairy dogs gave birth to puppies. The Corgis as they became known--from the Welsh words cor meaning "dwarf" and gi meaning "dog" were highly prized throughout the land for their herding ability. As a mark of their fairy steed origin, they all bore saddle or harness marks behind their shoulders.

The End. Source: Welsh Corgis Magazine, Vol. 31, 2003 Fancy Publications, Inc., Canada Kim Campbell Thornton is an award winning author who has been writing about dogs and cats for twenty five years.

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 26: Interview with Hammy & Olivia What first attracted you to the Corgi breed? Their energy! Prior to Hammy and Olivia, English bulldogs encompassed our dog life. We raised five of them. For 20 years, we assumed all dogs were conditioned to spend their entire day eating, sleeping and sunbathing. When we got to see just how playful and spunky Corgis can be, we got excited by how much of our daily lives we could include them in! How would you describe Hammy and Olivia's personalities? Olivia is as sweet as they come and is a total “daddy’s girl”. She won’t sleep or nap unless she’s leaning against one of us (or a fluffy pillow) and she wears the hat of the “family guardian” – she’s the first to greet anyone at our front door.

Hammy is a social butterfly that approaches every human he sees with a big smile on his face. He’s a sucker for a good round of tug-ofwar and he only knows two speeds: (1) playing as hard as he can and (2) crashing as hard as he can, afterwards. He’s also a total lush for his mom, Sarah, and is the very definition of a “momma’s boy”. Why did you decide to start an Instagram account for Hammy and Olivia? Prior to the Coronavirus pandemic, we were an incredibly active couple. Sarah was working regularly on the Las Vegas strip, and I was on an airplane twice per week, to and from California, for work. When we were quarantining in March of 2020, we had more time together as a family than we had ever experienced during the first 7 years of our relationship. We wanted a creative outlet for ourselves that we could enjoy together and creating an account for the pups seemed like the best way to share their shenanigans with others that might need a distraction from the wild circumstances. What is the thought process behind the content you create? Do you brainstorm ideas and scenarios or do you tailor the dialogue around things that come up day by day? Hammy and Olivia came to life during the rise of TikTok and short form video, so, for us, a piece of content coming full circle results in 1520 seconds of entertainment. It might not seem like a lot of time, but each 15-20 second clip requires a ton of creative attention. Sarah and I treat each video as if we’re cooking a meal. We always start with a concept, i.e. “Hammy is a magician”. The most difficult part of the entire process is bringing the concept to life. What ingredients do we need to make this dish, i.e. a cape? A wand?... What is Hammy’s magic trick? How will Olivia react to this? What visual effects do we need to come up with, to add a layer of polish to the skit?

What is the chronological order of each shot so that we can introduce an idea, add some humor, and tie it off in 15-20 seconds? Will the script be clear and concise? The quality of the dish we cook is only as good as the ingredients and execution. The creative preparation is the most difficult part, and it doesn’t get any easier after 400+ videos. That said, filming the content and working with Hammy and Olivia gets easier and easier. They’re total professionals at this point and understand what they need to do after a couple practice rounds! How much work is involved in running such a successful Instagram account overall? Is it a full-time job and/or have you managed to turn it into a full-time job? Running an online presence with an audience of 6M+ across platforms requires full-time attention. If we’re not creating content, we’re engaging with our communities on these platforms, responding to comments/direct messages, and handling meetings/phone calls pertaining to the business side of the brand. And, social media doesn’t turn off on the weekends so we treat this as a seven day per week profession. All of that said, neither Sarah nor I have abandoned our other careers. It’s stressful, but it’s a stress that we’re grateful for and a pressure we enjoy putting on ourselves to continue making the world smile. To learn more about Hammy and Olivia, visit their profile @hammyandolivia.
