Letter from the Editor Woof! And, welcome to the Fall issue! Although I'm a huge Summer lover, I've never felt more ready to embrace the sweater weather and pumpkin spice, on everything! Maybe it's because we had an extremely hot California Summer here, which was especially challenging for our hairier fur babies. Or, maybe it's simply the magic of changes, in the air, mixed with the spell of fresh pumpkins... This Halloween season, we set out to find the 3 cutest witches on Instagram, and we found Leo, Olivia, and Jolie. They shared a little about their magical life in New Jersey, as well as the Tricks and the Treats of their influencer dog experience. Over virtual pumpkin lattes, we discussed The Good, The Bad, and The Scaries of Instagram, with their mamager, Tati. In this issue, we also share the new Fall trends, that we fell in love with, our favorite Fall covers, and the last three events that we attended: the Last Summer Soiree of '21 at the Beverly Hilton, the 12th Annual Dog Surfing competition in Huntington Beach, and the First Halloween Pawty of the season at the Haunt O' Ween Premiere in Woodland Hills, CA. Dogs Attend the Endless Summer Soiree at the Beverly Hilton One of the advantages of living in LA is the fancy red carpet events that we get to attend. This month we were invited to Debbie Durkin’s EcoLuxe “Endless Summer” Party honoring Primetime TV Award Nominees, at The Beverly Hilton, in Beverly Hills, CA. The 15Th Annual VIP event featured many sponsors, including Honest Tea, Smart Water, Sea Solution Organic Beauty, RevealU Skincare, Magtein, Merci Life Co. and John Paul Pet Products. Jamaica Tourism Board attended with Blue Mountain Coffee, gifting a few luxury resort stays from Sunset at the Palms and the allinclusive Couples Resorts. Guests also had the opportunity to try some ecologically and socially aware pet products from John Paul Pet Products, as well as Magtein’s magnesium health supplement that supports improvement of cognitive functions. Hilton’s very own Chef Matthew served his famous five-star champagne brunch, complete with a churros dipping bar. And, Leonie McDonald, Strictly Vegan’s certified vegan chef, served up her delicious ‘Reggae Vegan Wraps.’

Debbie Durkin gave us a great Summer party, and with it, a great reminder that: “It’s not about the dress you wear or the jewelry you buy; it’s all about self-care and wellness.”

The Annual Surf City Surf Dog Competition The first time that we came across a surFUR on Instagram, it was Flofy; a 5 lb Maltese wearing a pink body suit, and chasing waves on her pink surf board. It was one of the cutest things we had ever come across! But, we didn't think that it was actually a thing- dog surfers?! Turns out, it is! Apparently surfing is not just a human sport, it is something that dogs can learn too! And while it pains us to say that Flofy is no longer here, her younger brother, Mikey, is continuing his sister's surfing legacy. He is only 1 year old and he is already taking surfing lessons with Jill Nakano, a professional surfer from Good Kharma Surf. He will most likely compete next year, according to his mamager.

With last year’s competition canceled due to COVID-19, everyone was excited to be back for the 12th Surf City Surf Dog competition in Huntington Beach, organized by @surfdogevents. The Dog Beach was packed with dogs, humans who came to cheer them on, and the news media. There were a total of four categories: (1) Weight (2) Tandem: Dog & Dog (3) Tandem: Dog & Human, and (4) Shredders. The winners of the 1st category were (1) Derby (2) Giselle and (3) Charlie. The winners of the 2nd were (1) Faith & Rusty (2) Carson & Giselle, and (3) Charlie & Koa. The winners of the 3rd were (1) Skyler (2) Sugar and (3) Bamboo. And the winners of the 4th were (1) Sugar (2) Skyler and (3) Finn.

Instagram: the good, This Halloween season, we set out to find the cutest witches on Instagram, and we found them! Meet Leo, Olivia, and Jolie— 3 Maltese models from New Jersey, and seasonal witches, pirates, mermaids, bunnies, elves, superheroes, and so much more! These Maltese pups are pawfessional models, Cover Dogs and brand ambassador to over a dozen of brands. Leo, Olivia and Jolie love to play dress up for the gram, and pose for treats, especially Jolie-our Cover star! And, after spending over a decade on Instagram, their mamager knows all the treats and the tricks of the trade. We sat down with their mamager, Tati to discuss the good, the bad, and the scaries of Instagram. Tati has been using social media for about 20 years. In fact, she started long before these 3 pups, and long before Facebook, and Instagram, with a platform called Orkut. Today, she uses mostly Facebook and Instagram to manage the career of her three dog influencers. Now speaking of tricks, at the beginning of this year, the trio’s account was replicated by someone who was pretending to be them! "They copied our Instagram handle, except for that they added 2 extra letters in their profile name. They copied our profile picture, and they copied our photos, essentially pretending to be us" explains Tati. Tati had already reported the fake account, but nothing happened. The account was still there, the last time she checked. Talk about the scaries of Instagram! And, the worst part, is that this is not even the scariest part!

the bad & the scary "Leo, Olivia & Jolie is our second Instagram account, explained Tati. I started my first Instagram account years ago, and when we reached 14K followers, our account was hacked and deleted, so we had to start all over again, from scratch!" Indeed, there are lots of pirates and witches on social media; and not just during the spooky season! Like anything else, Instagram is a weapon that can be used for good, and bad. And while for some, Instagram is a real treat, for others it is a way to trick people. Another thing to note is that social media is always masked. We only get to see the photos that people post, and not what's happening behind them. In reality, we never really know who is behind them. But Instagram is also a treat, and full of good tricks! It enables us to connect with people from all over the world, and build long lasting friendships. We asked Tati what advice she has for people newer to Instagram, and she shared several great tips. [1] Be original, and don't try to copy others. Indeed, everyone is unique in their own way, and it is only when we embrace our uniqueness that magic happens! [2] Be respectful of your dogs, and remember that they're not humans. Sometimes they don't want to play dress up, and you should never push them. Let them play on their own time. [3] And, lastly, when you get weird messages from people pretending to be Instagram managers, simply report, and block them. And, don't click on any links that you don't recognize.

The Bichon Family According to the AKC, the tiny Maltese has been sitting in the lap of luxury since the Bible was a work in progress. The Maltese is an ancient breed of the Bichon family, descended from the Barbet. The name "bichon" is derived from "barbichon", which means "little barbet”. It is believed that the Bichon type dates back to at least the 11th century. The Bichon family includes Bichon Frise, Havanese, Bolognese, Coton de Tulear, Lowchen, and the Maltese. Maltese is the smallest of the breed, typically weighing less than seven pounds. Famous for their show-stopping, floor-length silky white coat, these pups depict a free-flowing elegance and luxury. And, despite their aristocratic bearing, Maltese are playful, charming, and adaptable toy companions. Being alert and fearless, they also make great watchdogs. While the exact origin of this delightful breed remains a mystery, it is believed to have originated in the central Mediterranean, Sicily, Egypt, and various parts of Europe. However, the island republic of Malta is where the breed draws its namesake. The name Malta is believed to have been derived from the Phoenician word for “a haven." It is largely believed by breed historians that the ancestors of the Maltese breed were brought to the islands of Malta via Phoenician trade routes. These dogs were often described as small and mostly white, with shaggy or long coats.

The History of the Noble Breed

The Maltese breed is originated in Malta, which lies 60 miles south of Sicily, in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea. Story has it that during a 2,000-year period beginning in 1500 B.C. this strategic gateway was conquered and occupied by successive waves of seafaring empirebuilders, such as Phoenicians, Greeks, Carthaginians, Romans, Arabs, and Normans. Thus the island became a clearinghouse for precious commodities, such as spices, silks, gemstones, and a certain little white lapdog! These small white dogs were also used to keep the Phoenician trade ships free of vermin, in addition to serving as companions to the sailors and the landdwelling natives. Maltese dogs grew in popularity to the point that they were kept as lap or sleeve dogs by wealthy aristocrats and even the Roman Governor, Publius. Trade and the invasions of other empires brought the Maltese out from the island of Malta into the world, where demand for these small lapdogs only increased. Queen Elizabeth I and Queen Mary of the Scots were both avid lovers of these little dogs. The Greeks of the fourth and fifth centuries B.C. were fascinated by the Maltese’s geometric beauty and left behind a rich legacy of breed-specific treasures: The “Melitaie Dog” is depicted on Golden Age ceramics, and Aristotle refers to it as “perfectly proportioned,” notwithstanding a diminutive stature.
Aristocrats of the Roman Empire perfected the Maltese’s role of status symbol and fashion statement. A Roman matron wasn’t fully dressed without a “Roman Ladies’ Dog” peeking out of her sleeve or bosom. Even the crusty Emperor Claudius succumbed to the breed’s charm. It is therefore not surprising that the Maltese was a persistent motif in Roman myths, poems, and fables in which the breed symbolized loyalty. The breed was also very popular in France, where they were kept as pets of the royalty and aristocracy. From France, these dogs spread throughout the courts of Europe, with dogs of very similar form being seen in a number of portraits of the upper classes. With its immense charm and eye-catching looks, it comes as no surprise that the Maltese was a fixture at dog shows from the very beginning. At New York’s first Westminster show, in 1877, the breed was exhibited as the Maltese Lion Dog. The original breed was bred throughout the 17th and 18th centuries. However, by the 19th century, they were bred with the ancestors of today’s Bichon Frise, Poodles, and small spaniels. Originally occurring in any color up until 1954, the standard now requires the coat be solid white. Today, the little Maltese is one of the most well-recognized breeds in the world. They are well-known for their luxurious long coat and endearing personality. They're also very popular among the Hollywood royalty.

“Our story really started when we adopted Henry, formally known as Buttercup, when he was just 3.5 months old. He convinced us to take him home within seconds, when he crawled into my lap going belly up right away. We took Henry on his very first hike that week and immediately he scaled the steepest rock to get a better view. Andre and I looked at each other and smiled. This was the mountain dog we have been dreaming of. Two and a half, adventure filled years later and Henry’s love for the outdoors only grew stronger. Now it was time to get Henry a friend, so we decided to adopt a kitten that could come on all of our adventures. Finding the right personality for an adventure cat turned out to be quite tricky, searching for three months before I met Baloo.
The Story of Henry & Baloo Henry and Baloo embark on their adventures across the US. This duo loves nothing more than following their noses and running free. Both of are rescues, and the stars behind the blog entitled “Our Wild Tails”. A family of four, based in Colorado, consisting of two humans, Cynthia and Andre, a dog named Henry, and a cat, named Baloo. “From backpacking to canyoneering, Henry and Baloo always want to come along for the ride, so naturally, we started taking them everywhere.” Explain the humans behind the pet stars, on their blog.

As I walked into his room, he was the first out of hi slitter to jump off the chair and run up to me, begging to be picked up. During the hour I spent getting to know him we played, snuggled, and bonded. He was absolutely perfect for our family.
