Late drama as Cove and Alloa share the spoils

The team showed tremendous resilience to turn the game on its head, only to be denied by a stoppage-time equaliser as Alloa Athletic snatched a point in a dramatic 2–2 draw at the Indodrill Stadium.

After falling behind early on, late goals from Adam Emslie and Mitch Megginson looked set to secure the side’s first three points since late December, but a late strike from Liam Donnelly ensured the points were shared.

The manager made three changes to the side that fell to defeat against Hamilton Academical in our previous match. With Chris Maguire sidelined through injury, Joe Teasdale was handed his first start since joining on loan from Aberdeen. Fraser Fyvie returned to the starting line-up for the first time since sustaining an injury on the opening day against Queen of the South, while Parker also came back into the side after a short spell on the sidelines. Layton Bisland and Justin Eguaibor dropped to the bench.

Cove fell behind early when Rangers loanee Josh GENTLES opened the scoring for the hosts in the eighth minute. After receiving the ball on the left wing, the youngster cut inside before drilling a fine strike into the bottom corner from 20 yards.

The response from Cove was immediate and positive. Fyvie went close on 12 minutes after being picked out by Emslie on the edge of the box, curling narrowly wide on his weaker foot. Emslie then threatened quickly after, firing just wide after beating Foster on the wing.

At the other end, Mutch was called into action, producing a strong stop to deny Stewart’s powerful effort, before doing brilliantly to keep out Cameron O’Donnell from close range after the forward was slipped through by Donnelly. Cove continued to pile on the pressure down the other end in search of an equaliser. Megginson fired straight at the goalkeeper from a tight angle, before flicking Emslie’s cross wide at the near post. McFarlane then produced an excellent save to tip O’Donnell’s strike around the post.

Moments later, Cove were given a warning at the other end as Clarke dragged a low effort inches wide following a neat one-two on the edge of the box as the clock ticked towards half-time.

Just before the break, we came agonisingly close to an equaliser. Megginson slipped Teasdale through with a perfectly weighted pass, and after holding off his defender, the Aberdeen loanee clipped the outside of the post.

The second half saw Cove continue to search for a breakthrough. Megginson’s glancing header was well saved by McFarlane just before the hour mark after the striker made a clever run to get on the end of Darge’s inch perfect cross, while moments later Mutch was again alert at the other end, denying Gentles a second goal with a strong stop at his near post.

We finally got our reward in the 83rd minute. Bisland, introduced moments earlier, delivered a cross

Three minutes later, the team completed the turnaround. Alloa attempted to play out from the back, but Megginson intercepted a loose pass from Foster. David Eguaibor, also introduced just minutes earlier, reacted quickest and unselfishly squared the ball back to MEGGINSON, who calmly slotted beyond McFarlane to make it 2–1.

Deep into stoppage time, Alloa found a late response. DONNELLYpicked up the ball on the edge of the box and clipped a fine effort into the top corner beyond Mutch’s reach to deny Cove what would have been a deserved three points.

A frustrating conclusion for the side, who produced a spirited performance and showed great character to fight back, but were ultimately forced to settle for a point after a dramatic afternoon.
