Cove’s long unbeaten run came to an end at Balmoral Stadium following a poor performance against our visitors from Clackmannanshire.

Rumarn Burrell gave us a first half lead, but that was cancelled out just past the hour mark, and Alloa snatched all three points deep into stoppage time.

Celebrating what was his 450th game as a club manager, Paul Hartley had made two changes for this one, Nick Suman returning in goal for Balint Demus – who faces a spell on the sidelines after fracturing his hand in last week’s win at Annan – and Sena taking over from the suspended Josh Kerr.

Teenage goalkeeper Jack Robertson was promoted to the bench.

06 ALLOA ATHLETIC MATCH REPORT Cove kicked-off and enjoyed the bulk of the early possession without offering any kind of attacking threat. It was not until the tenth minute that the visiting defence was seriously tested, Michael Doyle’s inviting cross only just evading Rumarn Burrell.

With that theme continuing, Alloa finally forced their way into the game when O’Donnell’s long range free-kick was comfortable held by Suman. The big Aussie was called into action again soon after, making a good save from Cawley’s twenty yard drive.

And then, in the nineteenth minute, we took the lead with a familiar name on the scoresheet. Sena rolled the ball to Blair Yule, who clipped it over the top of the Alloa back line. Rumarn BURRELL raced away in behind and as Morrison tried to close him down, the striker cleverly angled his shot over the keeper and inside the far post.

It might have been two shortly after when McGowan wriggled clear and passed to Mitch Megginson. The captain made space, took a touch, then fired goalwards, his effort bouncing just wide of the near post.

Bobby Wales had the opportunity to level, but his decent shot flew inches wide of Suman’s left post from the edge of the box.

The second half began in the same subdued manner as the first had, and it took seven minutes before there was any

serious goalmouth action. Connor Scully fired in a dangerous free-kick delivery which was only half cleared, and Mark Reynolds struck a powerful angled volley which Morrison scrambled to safety.

We were putting together some reasonable moves, but they broke down before a shooting opportunity could be presented, and all too often the final ball went astray. The players were made to pay for that in the sixty-second minute.

Jones pass infield was intercepted

by Cawley who sped forwards and rolled the ball to Quinn COULSON. The midfielder created a yard of space then drilled a low shot beyond Nick Suman for the equaliser.

Our play deteriorated further in the wake of that, and there was only one other Cove chance. After a promising move from deep, Burrell kept the ball in play, and after it was switched, Blair Yule won a corner on the right. Scully swung it in and found the head of Will Gillingham, but the defender’s effort flew wide.

Alloa won it in the third minute of stoppage time. A hopeful ball into the box was poorly defended, substitute Sammon forced it back across goal, and Scott TAGGART slid in to net from close range.

It was a late sickener for Cove, but there could be no real complaints given the display, and the focus will turn quickly to next week’s visit of troubled Edinburgh City when the team will hope to bounce back again.

16 THE SEASON SO FAR As the season nears its midway point, this afternoon sees our final home match of the year. After a turbulent start, the players put together an impressive long unbeaten run, ended only by Alloa last week, and we head towards 2024 in a strong position to be part of the play-off shake-up.

It has certainly been a busy time following our relegation from the Championship at the end of the 2022/23 campaign, and the decision which was

taken to move towards a full-time setup at Balmoral Stadium.

Ultimately, twenty-one new players would be brought to Cove, with the first steps being taken towards implementing our own youth programme thanks to the signings of a number of promising teenagers.

After a series of warm-up matches, the season began in earnest with a convincing 5-2 win over Clyde in the Viaplay Cup, new boys Kyle Connell and Rumarn Burrell each helping themselves to doubles. That was followed by a win at Brechin, Connell again netting twice, and although we lost home to Livingston, there was still the chance to qualify for the knockout stages in the group closer at Hamilton.

At one point, with the side leading 2-1, we were going through, but results elsewhere turned against us, and our dreams of qualification for the first time were ended.

The League One campaign began with a narrow defeat at Accies, an unlucky Josh Kerr own goal deciding the outcome, and we suffered more heartbreak on matchday two. After a stirring performance we led 2-1 against title favourites Falkirk, only to see the visitors equalise deep into stoppage time.

The team picked up its first victory the following weekend with Burrell, Scott Williamson and Mitch Megginson all on target in the 3-0 success at Montrose,

but a disappointing display seven days later saw us fall to defeat at home to Queen of the South.

A 1-0 reversal at Alloa meant we had lost three of the first five games, and we crashed out of the Challenge Cup at the first hurdle, losing 2-0 to Montrose.

The campaign began to turn in midSeptember when, after having gone 2-0 down at home to Kelty Hearts, the boys dug deep, Megginson scoring both as we fought back for a 2-2 draw. We had to settle for the same scoreline at Edinburgh City a week later, a stoppage time own goal handing us a share of the points, and there was a third 2-2 in a row at Stirling when Connor Scully scored a spectacular last gasp leveller.

The side then embarked on a sensational winning run. Paul McGowan, Blair Yule and Fraser Fyvie had us 3-0 up and cruising at home to Annan Athletic, and while the visitors got a two back in the space of a minute, the boys held on for a vital victory.

Next up came the long journey to Dumfries, and with an excellent, disciplined display, Cove took all three points thanks to a late strike from Rumarn Burrell. Importantly, it was a first clean sheet for Nick Suman, who pulled off a string of fine saves, and the team clearly took confidence from that.

Hamilton headed north the following weekend, still boasting an unbeaten record, but the players put an end to that with another assured showing. The only goal was a thing of beauty, Mark Reynolds’ pinpoint forty yard delivery expertly headed home by Fyvie.

We then chalked up a third straight 1-0 win, Burrell snatching an early opener against Kelty on what was our first ever visit to New Central Park.

Having been postponed because of October’s storms, our second league meeting with Montrose went ahead in mid-November, and in tough conditions, the side ground out a fourth successive 1-0 victory, Burrell again the goal hero.

And Rumarn was at it again a few days later, notching his first senior hat-trick as the side came from behind to beat Stirling Albion 3-1, and firm-up their position of third in the League One table.

We took on Albion the following week too, Doyle and Scully netting to clinch a fourth round Scottish Cup tie away to Brora Rangers, and after our game at Falkirk was called off, three more points were collected at Annan, Rumarn Burrell, fresh from having been named as the November Player of the Month, notching his second hat-trick in three matches.

Eleven games unbeaten and eight wins in a row, the team was flying, but that ended last weekend when Alloa scored late to snatch the win.

Nevertheless, the first half of the campaign has left the side in a decent position to challenge, with the players all fired up for what will be another demanding stretch of matches.

22 CAPTAIN’S VIEW We go into this afternoon’s meeting with Edinburgh City off the back of what was a hugely disappointing encounter with Alloa Athletic last weekend.

The result was obviously a sickener, but it was the performance that hurt even more, particularly given how we’ve been playing for the past few months.

It’s difficult to explain exactly what happened. I thought we started the game pretty well and played some decent enough football up until the goal, but from that point on we just stopped playing, there was no fluency, and we let them back into the match.

It was so frustrating, we were in a comfortable position, and they really weren’t causing us too many problems, but in the second half they got back level, and that seemed to spur them on.

Alloa played a high press, and on the day, we just couldn’t seem to find a way around that. We did not show enough quality, there was no real tempo, and when that happens, which it can, you need to dig in and fight as we had been doing throughout our recent run. For whatever reason, we didn’t have that last week either.

Both the display and the result came out of nowhere, but we need to push that to one side, and get back to doing what we do best.

That has been the theme in training this week, and the motivation is there from all of us. It is all about getting that momentum going again and building another unbeaten sequence like the one just ended.

We have proved we are capable of that; there’s no reason at all why we cannot start again.

Edinburgh are next, and despite the problems they have been suffering, they will be up for the challenge; that happens so often in the face of adversity.

I do feel for the boys there. As a player, all you want to do is concentrate on the football side of things, but when there’s uncertainty behind the scenes, that’s not always easy. I hope it all gets sorted out quickly for everyone at the club.

We cannot afford to dwell on that though, we just have to focus on ourselves; it’s all about Cove Rangers and what we hope to achieve, and that means being single-minded and determined to right the wrongs of last week.

The strong run we put together pushed us right up the league and we want, at the very least, to secure that third place. Falkirk and Hamilton have a bit of a gap at the top, but we’re not getting hung up on that. The main aim is to get back to winning ways, stay clear of those clubs behind us, and we will see where that takes us.

There are games coming up against Montrose and Kelty Hearts, so a win this afternoon would be the perfect start to our festive programme and put us in the right frame of mind for those challenges.

PAUL HARTLEY Welcome to Balmoral Stadium for what will be our last home game in 2023, and I certainly hope it will be a more enjoyable experience for all of us than the last match here.

The defeat against Alloa was hugely disappointing, we were nowhere near our best, and I just didn’t see that coming. We had been so good, so consistent in terms of how we had been playing, how we had been working, and we lost two really poor goals, which has not been like us over the past three months.

We should have managed the game, we should have at least got the point to keep the unbeaten run going, but it is time to bounce back; that’s the sign of a good team.

You do sometimes find throughout the season there’s one side that for whatever reason you struggle against; when we won the league in 21/22 it was East Fife, who were bottom of the table at the time, so we just need to take last week on the chin and look for a big reaction, which I’m sure we will get.

It will be about getting back to the basics, being a good unit and working hard; that has been the theme in training this week.

We didn’t move the ball quickly enough last Saturday, so it has been about trying to break the lines quicker, to show more intensity, just reminding the players about all the things we had been doing so well up until the Alloa game.

It hasn’t been the easiest in terms of preparing for this one, to be honest I’m not sure what kind of Edinburgh City team are going to turn up. They’ve found themselves in a difficult position financially, a lot of players leaving, so it’s really hard to gauge what line-up they’re going to go with.

We’ve done what we can; I’ve watched the footage from last week against Queen of the South, but we obviously don’t know too much about some of the personnel, the younger players they’re using. It’s about what we do though, how hard we have worked this week, and I fully expect a much better showing.

This is the start of what is going to be an important period, with Montrose and Kelty to come, followed by the away games against Falkirk and Hamilton, so we want to get off to a positive start.

We want to finish off 2023 on a high, so for now we are fully focused on Edinburgh. Like all the games in this league it will be a tough ninety minutes, we cannot afford to have the mindset that we can go in and win easily, that just doesn’t happen. You have to earn the right first.

They will have a number of young players out there who will be fit, enthusiastic and full of energy, so we have to match that, then hope that our quality will come through.

Over the piece, the first half of the season has been okay. We had a poor start, then had that great run, and that’s what we need to get back to. The players were all disappointed last week, but I know them well enough to know that they can bounce back, and that’s what I expect this afternoon.
