WHAT IS THE MEASURE OF A FULL LIFE?
At Ryman, we believe the measure of a full life is one that gets richer with age.

Rediscover lost passions and plunge headfirst into new ones. Surround yourself with new people, old friends and close family. Live with opportunities and experiences at your doorstep.
That’s why we’re creating communities that challenge the expectations of ageing, and investing in organisations that bring joy and meaning to our residents and team members.
Ryman are proud sponsors of The Court Theatre.

NAU MAI HAERE
MAI
Welcome to Dance Nation, a play that we have been looking forward to creating for you for more than a year now. The amazing music and excitement coming from our rehearsal room over the past few weeks has made us all curious and eager to see and experience this production for ourselves, so we hope you enjoy it.

This production is our Artistic Director Alison Walls’ debut directing on the mainstage for us. She has assembled an incredible team to bring the stories to life. Our thanks to Alison and the team for this tremendous effort.
Our new home continues to take shape in the city and for Friends of The Court Theatre, we have launched
a way to be involved. We invite you to Play Your Part in our fundraising campaign. More information can be found at applause.courttheatre.org.nz
Please enjoy our show tonight and of course, the warmer weather, the cherry blossoms and the spring flowers that are making a wonderful showing all across our city.

Somewhere in small-town America… an adolescent dance troupe is poised to claw their way to the top. ONE. EXACTING. ROUTINE. AT. A. TIMEEEEEEE! And if they do… they ‘will fly all the way to TAMPA BAY, FLORIDAAAAAAAAAAAAA’

‘For NATIONALSSSSSSSSSS’

DANCE NATION
Amidst the glittering swirl of sequins, perspiration, and high-stakes performances, six teenage girls and one boy (all portrayed by adults ranging from their 20s to 50s) remind us of what it is to be thirteen – a volatile blend of naiveté and wisdom, of humour and pain.
In this darkly comic, award-winning play, the lines between reality and fantasy meld in captivating ways. The characters extend a compelling invitation to revisit the realm of ‘thirteen-yearold-land,’ guiding us through their voyage of self-discovery as they unveil their vulnerabilities and aspirations.

Get ready to reconnect with the fierce and ambitious thirteen-year-old residing within you… Or, gain a deeper insight into the psyche of the teen in your life! The globally lauded, sold-out sensation, DANCE NATION, finally graces the stages of The Court Theatre and New Zealand for the first time.

ALISON WALLS
DIRECTOR
in a body that is controlled, suppressed, unpredictable, joyous and exhilarating. It is unapologetic, energetic and heartfelt.
As Barron puts it: Cuteness is death. Pagan feral-ness and ferocity are key.
Clare Barron deftly moves us between finely tuned naturalism, wild surrealism, the liminal space of inner thought and memory, and a kind of heightened subjective reality; reality as it is felt and remembered.

Played by adult actors of all ages, the characters are at once their past and future selves, each haunted by the other. Reading this play for the first time, I felt swept along by its dynamism and a profound sense of recognition—the 13 year-old girl that will always be part of me.
Through a competitive pre-teen dance troupe, Barron excavates the way in which ambition, desire, friendship and fear butt up against each other and against everything that tells girls to make themselves smaller. Dance Nation viscerally captures the complexity of living
Everyone is nice.
Everyone is vulnerable. And everyone is trying their hardest.
I am grateful to my brave and talented cast, who have leapt into their roles with power, vulnerability, intelligence, and wicked humour. I am grateful too, to the designers and creative team who have understood and captured the multiple and overlapping realities of this sui generis play and for the support of the remarkable production team.
Partly inspired by the reality show Dance Moms, Dance Nation traverses the realms of reality in a manner that is original, fierce, and bracingly honest.
