2025 is a significant milestone in the history of The Court Theatre as we celebrate taking up residence in our much anticipated and long hoped-for purpose-built home in the heart of Ōtautahi Christchurch.
It has been a long journey to arrive at this point. Since the establishment of The Court Theatre in 1971 by Yvette Bromley and Mervyn Thompson, there have been hopes and dreams for a permanent venue in which we might put down roots. I would like to acknowledge the many people who have contributed over the years to help us reach this moment, and particularly Philip Aldridge (Chief Executive 2005 - 2018) and Ross Gumbley (Artistic Director 2006 - 2019) who were tenacious in championing the vision of a new home for The Court Theatre in the period following the 2011 earthquakes.
I would like to express The Court Theatre’s deep gratitude to the audiences of Christchurch who have supported us over the years in each of our performing venues. Your faith in The Court Theatre has sustained and encouraged us and played a crucial part in creating many memorable performances.
It is through your support that The Court Theatre has not only survived, but thrived, and we now stand eagerly on the cusp of a bright and bold future. Our new home provides us with many more opportunities, and this has inspired us to expand the role that we can play for our communities.
From 2025 we’ll be increasing our commitment to our community engagement programmes, education offerings and drama classes, as well as introducing two new theatre series featuring the very best of contemporary and classic theatrical works, dynamic works for youth and families, performances throughout the year by our celebrated Court Jesters and the return of the Rainbow Festival for a second year.
I would like to thank the many people who have contributed towards us being able to realise the dream of our new home including Christchurch City Council, Creative New Zealand, Rātā Foundation, Manatū Taonga Ministry for Culture and Heritage, Lotto NZ, The Stewart Family Trust, The Court Theatre Foundation and Friends of the Court Theatre as well as Haworth Tompkins, Athfield Architects and Hawkins Construction.
I am also extremely grateful to Ryman Healthcare for continuing their support as the 2025 Season Sponsor and am delighted that they will be standing beside us in our new home.
I look forward to seeing you at The Court Theatre soon.
Gretchen La Roche
The Court Theatre Executive Director

Ryman Healthcare
In putting the Ryman Healthcare 2025 season together, we have thought deeply about our audiences and have selected works that honour our legacy as a professional, producing company in Aotearoa New Zealand, works that we trust our long-standing audiences will appreciate, as well as those that will speak to and foster the next generation of theatre-lovers. We open with one of the foundational classics of New Zealand playwriting, Bruce Mason’s The End of the Golden Weather, expanded into a company version by Raymond Hawthorne, making the most of our large stage.
We also celebrate one of Aotearoa’s best contemporary playwrights, Victor Rodger, with his provocatively titled Black Faggot; a play written in the context of the debate over the same-sex marriage bill, which has a renewed resonance today. Rodger was thinking specifically about young people, particularly young queer Pasifika people, quietly wretched amidst suppression and prejudice—and in response has written something provocative, funny, and touching. We are thrilled to be staging William Shakespeare’s irresistible Twelfth Night; an enduring classic, sure to delight a wide audience. Alongside such foundational works, we have vibrant contemporary works from Aotearoa and abroad. Hansol Jung’s Wolf Play has highlighted her as one of the most exciting US playwrights today, and for good reason— inspired by true events, it asks questions about
identity and family with both urgency and an innovative and playful artistry. These are just a few highlights in a season that celebrates the great variety of theatre in form, style, and purpose.
We continue to offer high-quality theatre and development opportunities for tamariki, rangatahi, and their families. This includes the improvisational brilliance of The Court Jesters, performances by our Jester Youth Company and The Court Youth Company, and special events, workshops, and classes through our Education, Learning and Engagement Department.
The new Court Theatre building opens a raft of artistic possibilities. Space quite literally shapes theatrical performance and the crucial relationship between performers and audience. To frame our new season with two distinct theatres, we are introducing the Signature and City Series.
Each series makes optimal use of our new home, matching the work to the space. Across both series, you can expect diversity, standardsetting talent, assured creativity, and skill from performing arts professionals.
Dr Alison Walls
The Court Theatre Artistic Director
The Signature Series is presented in the Stewart Family Theatre and highlights cornerstone pieces that excel on a grand scale. This series features musicals, large cast productions, classic and canonical works, epic dramas, and full-blown comedies.
The City Series is hosted in The Front Room and showcases innovative theatre and exciting new works from Aotearoa New Zealand and around the world, along with more intimate productions. Expect bold and playful performances that might challenge expectations, as well as personal, heartfelt shows with one to three performers that thrive on a closer connection between the audience and the actors.

From one of our most celebrated playwrights, this seminal piece of New Zealand theatre immerses us in the world of an innocent young boy.
A boy welcomes us into his world: the fictitious beachside community of Te Parenga, a golden territory in the land of milk and honey. Life here is idyllic and simple, filled with sun-drenched days by the sea.
But as time goes on, the encroaching reality of the outside world starts to seep in. The Queen Street riots ignite whispers of unrest and Boy watches from the sidelines as the local policeman tries to keep the peace. Christmas comes and goes and life feels like it’s flatlining until he stumbles across local eccentric, Firpo. At first Boy is frightened by Firpo’s strangeness then later he finds himself captivated by Firpo’s dedication to “getting himself fit for the Olympic Games”. Curiosity changes everything about that summer.
Filled with bravado, the local lads challenge Firpo to a race and Boy prays he’ll beat them to the finish line. History runs its course, then some weeks later, when Boy goes to visit Firpo, he’s gone. He is suddenly struck by the realisation that summer is fleeting and — like his childhood — it is coming to an end.
“...a powerfully insightful and poignant coming-of-age story that every New Zealander should be familiar with.”
- John Smythe, Theatreview
“Bruce Mason’s masterpiece continues to astound, entertain and reveal deeper levels of meaning.”

The wāhine of Kōpū weave live music, performance, poetry, and poi through a hilariously honest, no-holds-barred account of their femininity on their own terms.
Kōpū invites you into a cheeky ballad of a show, sharing the songs of our young wāhine Māori as they navigate this world—hairy nipples first—following in the footsteps of our naughty nannies from the kāuta home.
Multi-talented performers weave live music, performance, poetry, and poi through a hilariously honest and no-holdsbarred account of their experiences of wāhinetanga womanhood now; the day-and-night duality of being fiercely everything at once.
“A selection of thoughtful, funny, seamlessly woven and heart-grabbing vignettes.”

Prepare for a wild ride with Shakespeare’s riotous rom-com, where laughter and bewilderment go hand in hand. This fresh interpretation will have you doubled over with laughter while you ponder the twisty, unexpected turns. In this world, nothing is quite as it seems.
Stranded on the coast of Illyria, the clever and resourceful Viola, separated from her twin brother Sebastian, disguises herself as a man and enters the service of Duke Orsino.
As she navigates her new life, she becomes entangled in a whirlwind love triangle where identity, passion, and gender blur and collide. Bursting with vitality and romance, Twelfth Night introduces one of Shakespeare’s most captivating heroines, who matches wits with an array of memorable characters, from the lovesick Olivia to the puritanical Malvolio.
This play is a rich tapestry of comic courtship, mistaken identities, and fluid romance. With its ingenious central plot involving twins of different genders, and its delightfully funny side plots, Twelfth Night serves up a feast of laughter, poignant moments of grief, and the joy of unexpected revelations.
“A lively farce that builds to breakneck speed, with plenty of the usual elements to drive the story – a love triangle, character confusion and mocking of character and society’s pretensions.”

Based on the Academy Award-winning film starring Colin Firth, this is the inspiring story of how King George VI found his voice.
“Imagine yourself as a child, terrified of your own parents because every time you speak you disappoint them. Teased. Unable to share a joke with friends. No friends actually. Unable to answer in class, so you’re ranked last. Trapped in a body that refuses to obey your commands.”
Imagine being faced with the biggest moment of your life, and you cannot find your voice. The weight of the nation sits on your shoulders as you assume a role bound by duty, and your family is in crisis. Your only hope lies in someone from the opposite side of the world, in geography, stature, and convention.
Originally conceived as a play before being turned into the Academy Award-winning film, TheKing’sSpeech takes an intimate view of one of life’s most unorthodox relationships between Bertie, the soon-tobe-crowned King George VI, and Australian speech therapist Lionel Logue. As Hitler’s threat on Europe encroaches, Bertie fights his own battle to overcome his speech impediment at the time his country needs him most.
“The King’s Speech is a triumph, full of heart and drama.”
- Michael Billington, The Guardian
“A slick, appealing package.”
- Henry Hitchings, The Standard
“It’s a fascinating play that brings out the human as well as the history.”

By Victor Rodger
The critically acclaimed playwright and producer Victor Rodger’s powerfully funny play comes to The Court Theatre for the first time.
Rodger saw young people marching in a Destiny Church rally against same sex marriage and thought, “at least one of those kids will be gay and feeling quite wretched about himself”. The result is a series of (mostly) humorous monologues from a vast array of (mostly) queer characters in Auckland’s Pasifika community.
From a camp, closeted member of Destiny Church who finds himself on the march against the Civil Union Bill, to a staunch queer man who is loud and unapologetically proud; from a Samoan clean freak who’s annoyed that his partner has just soiled their brand-new bedspread, to an award-winning fa’afafine artist who relishes explaining the true meaning behind her new work ‘Cracker Wanna Poly’.
With cracking comic timing, this play is funny and filthy, raw and emotional and full of love. Black Faggot took the Edinburgh Fringe by storm, and has enjoyed sold-out seasons in Aotearoa New Zealand and Australia.
“A riotous and wickedly fun ride.”
- Sydney Morning Herald
“Victor Rodger’s Black Faggot is a riotous romp from chapel to gay club.”

“Honest, raw, energetic, thoroughly entertaining and thought-provoking.”

Iconic playwright Sir Roger Hall’s beloved character, retired cow-cockie Dickie Hart, finds himself struggling to navigate life in the city.
Loveable curmudgeon Dickie and his wife Glenda have moved into an Auckland apartment, Seaview, with a body corporate and a tiny peek of the sea, to be near their grandchildren.
The crusty old bloke — the protagonist of Sir Roger’s hit plays C’mon Black and You’ve GottobeJoking — tries valiantly to confront life in the great big, bad city, and with Hall’s signature comedic touch.
Then, like a bolt from the blue, Covid strikes and Dickie finds himself isolated and starting to go downhill. Thankfully, he rallies. There’s still life in this old dog and, by crikey, he gives it heaps!
Sir Roger has been making us laugh for over five decades with hit comedies such as Glide Time, Spreading Out, Four Flat Whites in Italy, Who Wants to Be a Hundred, and Last Legs.
“Amusement, laughter, gasps and ‘oof’s at the slings and arrows launched by life.”
- John Smythe, Theatreview

Luigi Pirandello’s revolutionary play blurs the lines between reality and fiction.
Six fictional characters, abandoned by their creator, invade a rehearsal in progress and demand to be brought to life by a new author.
The Father explains that they are unfinished characters in search of an author to finish their story. The Director initially believes them to be mad, but as they begin to argue among themselves and reveal details of their story, he begins to listen. While The Director is not an author, he agrees to stage their story despite disbelief among the jeering actors. But the characters’ existential agenda collides with the more lighthearted ambitions of these theatre artists, whose open rehearsal “audience engagement event” becomes darkly entangled with the characters’ tragic story.
This intimate adaptation of Luigi Pirandello’s absurdist classic highlights the comedic tension between melodrama and the contemporary sensibilities of the acting company, all while prompting us to question our own perceptions of reality.
“...like a bombshell that blew out the last and weary residues of the old realistic drama.”
- Antonio Illiano
“A seminal play that allows actors to dig deeply into the text and explore the many facets of theatre and the relationship between actor and character, character and audience, audience and actor.”

Mischievous and affecting, Hansol Jung’s Wolf Play deftly explores the intricacies of the families we choose and un-choose, and how far we would all go to defend our pack.
Inspired by a true story, an American father “un-adopts” a boy over the internet, fulfilling Robin’s dream of becoming a mum. It’s a decision Peter instantly regrets when he discovers Robin and her partner Ash are lesbians and that the boy he was quick to usher out of his life will be growing up without a ‘dad.’
Wolf Play is a highly theatrical, imaginative piece about the primal need for kinship. It tells a messy, funny, and disturbing story of survival, family, and belonging, focusing on a lone wolf desperately seeking his pack.
It poses the question: “What is a family?”
“There’s an unruly quality to Jung’s idea of what theater can be, jagged and untethered, coy and dreamlike. It’s thrilling to see that potential unleashed on the vagaries of love.”
- New York Times
“Thrilling... portrays a traumatic situation, but with an antic disposition and a goofy heart... there’s a lightness here that chases away the shadows.”
- The New York Times
“Mischievous... grips you with both its facts and its fictions. Jung’s play is based on grim real-life experiences; The fantastical touch of the puppet and the Wolf... lightens the experience with humor... pulling you in emotionally so the punches land when your guard is down.”

Every round of APPLAUSE counts – can you help us complete the new Court Theatre?
We’re nearly at our $12 million fundraising target for our new home, and your support would be the final act in this exciting journey. By contributing to the new theatre, you’re not just donating; you’re ensuring that Christchurch’s vibrant arts scene continues to shine on a global stage. The move into the city centre is more than a change of address. Your generosity will ensure the highest quality of professional live theatre lives on, provide further support to Ōtautahi Christchurch’s talented artists, and guarantee that future generations can experience the magic of live performances. Together, we are creating a space that will engage, entertain, educate, and inspire our communities for years to come. Let’s make this vision a reality – join the applause today!
Donations can be made directly through The Court Theatre website, courttheatre.org.nz, and any amount over $5 is tax deductible.
If you’d like to speak with us further about making a donation to the new Court Theatre, including options of naming rights and support of specific areas of interest, please contact Sophie Hicks, Partnerships & Development Manager. sophie.hicks@courttheatre.org.nz.
We’d like to give a standing ovation to those who have already generously contributed to the new Court Theatre.
