Let Us Be Brave & Bold “Let me win, But if I cannot win, let me be Brave in the attempt” is the Motto of the Special Olympics Athletes. If you read it again, it is more than just a motto but a philosophical way of thinking. It reminds us that we should be hopeful and courageous in our lives.

As President of AADMD, and a Special Olympics Global Clinical Advisor, it's my mission to bring this spirit to our organization.

Equipped with hope and courage, AADMD can educate, advocate, collaborate and propagate the attitude of inclusion and improve health care for all people. Injustice is wrong, but to sit back and watch it happen is worse. Now is the time to find "The Way Forward" and do our part to make a difference - together.

AADMD was formed to improve interdisciplinary healthcare, create more access to care, and end health disparities for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). We invite likeminded people and organizations to join us in "One Voice" for this cause. When we advocate together, we create change.

LET ME INTRODUCE MYSELF Sit back, relax and settle in for a good time. I’m Kim Hing and I’ll be your emcee for the next couple of days.

K

im Hing is an autism self-advocate.

She wasn’t diagnosed with autism until she was in her 40s. She graduated from Smith College with a degree in Mathematics. Kim is an active Special Olympic athlete and Athlete Leader.

As a Global Messenger for Special Olympics, she often emcees events and gives speeches to schools to promote inclusion, as well as to corporations to fundraise and encourage people to volunteer. She has been on panels to educate Stanford medical students on best practices in treating patients with

IDD. Kim was excited to participate in this year’s Special Olympics Capitol Hill Day where she met with members of Congress to tell them about the Healthy Athletes program and Unified Champion Schools program. Kim currently teaches kindergartners, second-graders, and third-graders in an after-school program. Additionally, she interns at Different Brains.org. She enjoys painting, photography, watching movies, and playing with her two kittens - Brooke and Cinnamon.

WHO WE ARE Founded in 2002, the American Academy of Developmental Medicine & Dentistry (AADMD) is a non-profit, membership organization of interdisciplinary health professionals — including primary physicians, medical specialists, dentists, optometrists, nurses and other clinicians — committed to improving the quality of healthcare for people with intellectual & developmental disabilities (IDD).

One Voice for Inclusive Health is AADMD’s annual educational conference, held every year since 2002. We believe it takes one voice to make a difference and one voice — the voice of a person with IDD — should be heard when it comes to their healthcare. In addition to this robust educational forum, AADMD hosts webinars, develops curriculum, crafts topical guidelines, issues white papers and trains clinicians to offer the highest quality of care to people with IDD.

People with IDD are treated poorly in the US healthcare system and experience unnecessary deaths as a result of poor healthcare. In 2002, these healthcare challenges were outlined in the Surgeon General’s report “Closing the Gap1.” So why does the disparity for people with IDD still exist? This is why we advocate. In order to change policy and systems of care, it takes persistence, passion — and it takes time.

AADMD’s members are the nation’s leading clinicians in IDD healthcare.

Patients with IDD need a medical team that works together. That’s why we promote an interdisciplinary approach to care - and membership.

People with IDD should have access to quality healthcare - which includes being able to find care easily, get their health needs met wholly and get services covered without the hinderance. AADMD works to make this vision a reality.

Blythe Ryerson, PhD, MPH is currently the Acting Director for the Division of Human Development and Disability (DHDD) in the National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities at CDC. In this role, Dr. Ryerson oversees the strategic direction of inclusive programs, surveillance, and research to improve the health and development of children and adults with, or at risk for, disabilities.

Prior to her role as Acting Director, Dr. Ryerson served as the Associate Director for Science within DHDD. She was the principal advisor on scientific matters for research papers, congressional inquiries, and other relevant scientific reports. In addition, she previously served as the Director for Science in the Division of Viral Hepatitis in the National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention, and as a lead epidemiologist for chronic disease efforts at CDC where she directed the National Program of Cancer Registries.

Sheri Schully, PhD, is the deputy chief medical and scientific officer of the All of Us Research Program. Prior to this role, she was a team lead and senior advisor for disease prevention in the Office of Disease Prevention (ODP). There, she led the effort to systematically monitor NIH investments in prevention research and assess the progress of that research. She also served as the team lead for the Knowledge Integration Team as well as a program officer in the Epidemiology and Genomics Research Program at the National Cancer Institute (NCI). She came to NCI as a Presidential Management Fellow in 2005.

Dr. Schully has authored or co-authored more than 70 papers, many focusing on the translation of genomic technologies into clinical and Public Health practice. She earned both a Ph.D. in biological sciences with a concentration in population genetics and a B.S. in zoology with a minor in chemistry from Louisiana State University.

Dr. Ryerson was also a co-lead on the COVID-19 Pandemic Response for vaccinating critical populations, has published in nearly 70 publications, and received numerous awards in recognition of her scientific work. She has a Master of Public Health and a Doctorate in Epidemiology from Emory University and currently lives in Atlanta, GA with her husband and two children.

Hoangmai Pham is President of Institute for Exceptional Care, a nonprofit dedicated to transforming healthcare for people with IDD. A general internist, Dr. Pham was Vice President at Anthem responsible for value-based care initiatives and previously Chief Innovation Officer at the Center for a founding official, and the architect of foundational programs on accountable care organizations and primary care. She serves on numerous advisory bodies, including for the National Academy of Medicine, the Agency on Healthcare Research and Quality, the Maryland Primary Care Program. Dr. Pham earned her A.B. from Harvard, her M.D. from Temple University, and her M.P.H. from Johns Hopkins where she was also a Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholar.

Timothy Shriver, PhD leads the Special Olympics International Board of Directors, and together with 6 million Special Olympics athletes in more than 200 countries, promotes health, education, and a more unified world through the joy of sport.

Shriver joined Special Olympics in 1996. He has been a leading educator who focuses on the social and emotional factors in learning. He co-founded and currently chairs the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL), the leading school reform organization in the field of social and emotional learning. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, Co-Chairman of the National Commission on Social and Emotional Learning, President of the Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. Foundation, Member of the Board of Directors for the WPP Group, LLC, and a co-founder of Lovin’ Scoopful Ice Cream Company.

Shriver earned his undergraduate degree from Yale University, a Master's Degree from Catholic University, and holds a Doctorate in Education from the University of Connecticut. He has produced four films, authored The New York Times bestselling book Fully Alive – Discovering What Matters Most, and has written for dozens of newspapers and magazines. Shriver and his wife, Linda Potter, reside in the Washington, D.C. area and have five adult children.

Catherine (Cathy) Rice, PhD is a Developmental Psychologist and Branch Chief in the Disability and Health Promotion Branch at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). At CDC she leads several public health programs using data to promote health and wellbeing among people with disabilities. Dr. Rice was the Director of the Emory Autism Center (EAC) and Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Emory University from 2015-2020. At Emory, Dr. Rice was honored to lead a team of faculty and staff supporting meaningful improvements in quality of life with people on the spectrum across the lifespan. Central to these services is the Early Emory Center for Child Development and Enrichment (formerly the “Walden” preschool) and the myLIFE Social Engagement Groups, both models for inclusive behavior support programs. In addition, she oversaw a range of clinical, training, and research programs around assessment and behavioral supports, working closely with partners across the State of Georgia.

At Emory, Dr. Rice established the first undergraduate seminar on Neurodiversity. She is now Adjunct Faculty in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Emory.

Gerald E. Harmon, MD, a family medicine specialist having practiced for more than 30 years in coastal South Carolina, became 176th president of the American Medical Association in June 2021. He was first elected to the AMA Board of Trustees in June 2013 and elected board chair in 2018. In addition, Dr. Harmon also served as the secretary of the AMA in 2016.

Previously, Dr. Rice spent 14 years as a Behavioral Scientist and Epidemiologist at CDC. Her work included the establishment of the Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring (ADDM) Network to estimate autism prevalence and describe the population of children with autism in multiple areas of the United States. Dr. Rice represented CDC on national and international committees and was the Autism Society of America Professional of the Year in 2008. She also worked with the Learn the Signs. Act Early. team to improve early identification and led the effort to collect data on the important safety issue of wandering among people with autism and other developmental disabilities.

Before his retirement from the military as a major general, Dr. Harmon served the nation in the Air Force Reserve, on Active Duty, and in the Air National Guard holding responsibilities as chief physician for the National Guard Bureau and assistant surgeon general for the U.S. Air Force. His military decorations include the Distinguished Service Medal, the Legion of Merit, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Air Force Commendation Medal and the Humanitarian Service Medal.

Dr. Rice received her undergraduate degree in Psychology from Emory University and her doctorate in Developmental Psychology from Boston College. She is a licensed psychologist in the state of Georgia and conducts specialized training on the diagnosis of autism.

She has worked with people on the autism spectrum and with other developmental disabilities through teaching, diagnostic assessment, program planning, consultation, training and research for over 30 years.

In South Carolina Dr. Harmon has held several leadership positions in the South Carolina Medical Association, including chairman of the board and president. Dr. Harmon serves as a clinical professor at two of South Carolina’s medical schools and is a member of the clinical faculty for the Tidelands Health Family Medicine residency program while regularly precepting physicians in training.

In his hometown, Dr. Harmon is an advisor to the board of trustees for his community health system. He is a medical director for several organizations and volunteers as medical supervisor for his local school district’s 23 schools. He has also been recognized with the Lifetime Achievement Award from his county’s Chamber of Commerce.

Dr. Harmon received his undergraduate degree in physics and mathematics from the University of South Carolina and, more recently, an honorary Doctorate of Public Service. He received his medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina and completed his residency training program in family medicine with the U.S. Air Force at Eglin Air Force Base and is recognized as a fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians.

During the rare times when not actively practicing medicine, Dr. Harmon and his wife, Linda, enjoy spending time outdoors in their coastal hometown of Georgetown with their three married children and eight grandchildren. www.aadmd.org

Cesar Sabates, DDS is the 158th American Dental Association (ADA) president. He is the first Cuban-American dentist to hold the position.

Previous to his new role as president, Dr. Sabates served as the 17th District trustee for the ADA Board of Trustees from 2016-2020 and as a delegate in the ADA House of Delegates from 2000-2016. He also was the past president of the Florida Dental Association (FDA) and the South Florida District Dental Association (SFDDA).

Dr. Sabates received his dental degree and certificate of advanced education in general dentistry from the University of MissouriKansas School of Dentistry. In addition to the ADA, FDA and the SFDDA, he is a member of the Academy of General Dentistry, Hispanic Dental Association. He is a fellow of the American College of Dentists, International College of Dentists, and Pierre Fauchard Academy.

During his presidency, Dr. Sabates will prioritize inclusivity and increasing diversity within the pipeline of councils and committees, while emphasizing the value of membership to dentists. Looking at the business model of the ADA and ensuring that membership is providing what members truly need will be an ongoing effort throughout the next year. Diversity of thought is something Dr. Sabates has valued throughout his career and will continue to emphasize during his presidency. With decades of experience working with dentists from all over the country, Dr. Sabates brings insight and vision that will help make strides towards these goals during his time as president.

Neil Romano is a distinguished Council member and past Chairman of the National Council on Disability (NCD) – an independent, nonpartisan federal agency that advises the President, Congress and other federal agencies on disability policy.

Neil Romano has dedicated his career to the marketing of ideas and messages to help save lives and promote public policy. Romano’s extensive professional background includes tenure as director of communications for the White House Office of Drug Abuse Policy.

In that role, he worked on notable public awareness campaigns including “Just Say No” and “America Responds to AIDS.” In 2007, Romano was nominated by President George W. Bush to be the Assistant Secretary of Labor for Disability Employment Policy and was unanimously confirmed by the U.S. Senate. As head of the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP), Romano advised the Secretary of Labor and worked with all DOL agencies to lead a comprehensive and coordinated national policy regarding the employment of people with disabilities in the United States. His work as a member of the Committee for Purchase from People Who are Blind or Severely Disabled, helped improve the quality of life for workers with disabilities. In 2010, Romano’s work as a member of that committee was recognized by the full committee with a special leadership award.

As a producer/director, Romano’s film, “Youth Homicide: A Public Health Crisis,” earned a Best Director Emmy Nomination. Romano graduated from New York University, Phi Beta Kappa. Romano lives with his wife of over 30 years, Barbara, and is the proud father of two adult daughters – Bianca Romano Stephens and Christina Romano.

manda Harrinauth, is a poet and global ambassador for the Special Olympics movement.

Ms. Harrinauth began writing poetry in 2016, after receiving a diagnosis of autism at the age of 26. As Ms. Harrinauth says, “poetry has power to heal the world.” Ms. Harrinauth’s work

has been published in autism parenting magazine, Exceptional Parent magazine, NPR, Women's Daily Magazine and World Wide coaching magazine. She was recently recognized by President Joe Biden, for a poem entitled “ Rest in the World.”
