New Owners at the Miramar

After 14 years of running the Miramar in Gooding, Bill Manly decided the age of 85 was a good time to retire. If you are a regular at this watering hole, don’t worry, it is in good hands with the new owner - Tonya Baum. For now, the Miramar is an investment but she hopes to return to Gooding to run the bar herself at 214 Main Street. Meanwhile, her dad (John Moody) is running the bar along with Stockmans in Wendell. They are still going through some transitioning with licenses, but once things get settled down, they hope to get regular tournaments going with pool and darts. Of course, the best thing about a place like the Miramar is getting together with friends.

One Hundred Years in Camas County

In the late 1800s, communities began springing up all over southern Idaho, and with these settlements came churches. For the first thirty years of Camas Prairie settlements, most of the ministers were itinerant, traveling from as far away as Boise to conduct church services. The first actual church building was built by the Methodists/Episcopals in 1901. That building was later moved (not without some strenuous protests) to Fairfield in 1915. In 1918, the Immaculate Conception Chapel was built on Camas Avenue, just a block west of Soldier Road in Fairfield. While the Catholic population in Camas has always been small and their chapel was one of the later church buildings to be built, they do have legitimate claim to being the first to bring religious teaching to the folks of the Camas Prairie. Somewhere between 1881 and 1883, Father Louis Verhaagd conducted Catholic services in the town of Soldier. The Chapel was built by Father Nicholas Witzberger and dedicated in 1918 by Bishop Daniel Gorman. In 1957, the interior of the chapel was damaged by fire. After the renovation, services continued but by the late 1900s the parish was all but non-existent. Then ten years ago, a renewed interest by the Catholic community birthed the reestablishment of the parish. On September 9th, 2018, the small chapel was full of community members of various faiths, celebrating together, the one hundredth anniversary of the Immaculate Conception Chapel in Fairfield.
