In 2003 the Airport Authority in Hailey, Idaho, decided to start searching for a site to relocate the Friedman Memorial Airport. What followed was indepth study of multiple sites including locations outside of Blaine County. One of the prime locations for a new airport was north of Highway 20 between 10 to 16 miles east of Fairfield, Idaho. This was not first time this area had been considered for an airport. In the mid1990’s similar relocation discussions took place, and for over twenty years there has been the possibility of an airport on the east end
of the Camas Prairie. Last month construction began on a private runway located one mile north of Highway 20 and 11 miles east of Fairfield. This construction has, of course, spawned all kinds of rumors as to what it might or might not be. While there are several private runways/airstrips in Camas County, this particular location is noteworthy because is owned by Bruce Willis, and was at one time offered as a land donation to the Friedman Memorial Airport Authority. According to FAA documents, Soldier Field Air-
port will be 8500 feet long and 100 feet wide, and will be limited to private use and Visual Flight Rules (clear weather only, no instruments). The FAA documents also indicate that this airport (estimated in 5 years) could base ten singleengine and/or multi-engine aircrafts, but no jets, helicopters, or military. Contrary to rumors, there is no immediate plan to pave this runway. According to the owner (Ix-Nay Investment Trust), it will remain gravel for the foreseeable future, and the actual landing area will likely be limited to 5000 feet or less.
