In 1862, President Lincoln signed the Pacific Railway Act which brought to life the Transcontinental Railroad. The Pacific Railway Act also chartered a new railroad company - the Union Pacific. Union Pacific broke ground in Omaha in December 1863, but due to many delays, it was July 1865 before the first rails were laid, three months after President Lincoln's death. In celebration of their 150th anniversary, Union Pacific established the Train Town USA Registry to honor cities and towns across the West that represent their ongoing and historic connection with nearly 7300 communities. On Thursday, September 6, 2012, a very special passenger train arrived in Shoshone, Idaho, to promote the railroad safety program - Idaho Operation Lifesaver UPCARES.
