Water Bond in Gooding
On Thursday of last week, the Gooding City Council held the first of three meetings to discus the upcoming Bond Election scheduled for November 5th, 2013. Earlier this year, the district court rejected the city’s request for judicial conformation which would have approved spending money to improve the city’s water system without voter approval. The city still needs to address a number of problems including a flood irrigation system that is useless to a large percentage of residents and a potable water system that may not be able to meet the needs of the city (water demand and fire flow) in the next four or five years. To address these problems, the city is asking the voters to approve a $5 million bond. The bond will be used to install three new wells, upgrade water lines, and deal with the flood irrigation issue. For many, the down side is the increase in water fees that will be needed to repay the bond. The fee increase, which will not go into affect until the project is finished, is estimated at $30 to $40 per month, but some of that will depend on how much water a particular household uses. Two more meeting are scheduled: October 2nd and 29th at the Walker Center (605 11th Ave. East).
