West Nile Virus found in Lincoln County

South Central Public Health District (SCPHD) officials have confirmed the first reported human case of West Nile virus in Lincoln County. The patient is an adult male, 39 years old, and was not hospitalized. Typical symptoms of the virus include fever, headache, body aches, joint pains, vomiting, diarrhea, and rash. People over 50 years old, with medical conditions, are at greater risk for serious illness from the virus. More severe infections may involve the central nervous system. “We focus on prevention because there is no specific treatment for the virus,” said Christi Dawson-Skuza, SCPHD epidemiologist. “Health care providers can only try to ease symptoms because there is no vaccine or antiviral treatments available.” Public Health officials remind residents to protect themselves and their families from mosquito bites. Use insect repellents with an active ingredient like DEET, especially at dawn and dusk when mosquitos carrying the virus are most active. Wear loose-fitting clothes with long sleeves and pants. Install screens on all windows and doors. Drain any standing water around your home every three to six days. In July, mosquitoes carrying the virus were found in Gooding County and it not suprising that insects are also carrying the virus in surrounding areas. More information is available on our website at: www.phd5.idaho.gov/WestNile and on the CDC website at: www.cdc.gov/westnile. Over a year ago, the small town of Shoshone, Idaho, did a great big thing. With a lot of work from a dedicated group, led by Dr. Keith Davis, Shoshone opened Good Samaritan Clinic to serve the people of Lincoln County afflicted with limited medical and pharmaceutical resources. Dr. Keith Davis of Shoshone Family Medical Center, who has spent his latest 30 years in service to the medical issues of Lincoln County, teamed up with the late John Sexton, founding Director of The Mustard Seed Twin Falls, to set up the clinic, and the doctor began seeing patients one evening a month in a room set aside for the free clinic. They formed a panel of key people and, whoosh! – in just over a year a plan was built, a grant obtained, and a clinic opened to the public. The Clinic is run by volunteers and donations. Congressman Mike Simpson, on hiatus, was scheduled into several events in the area on Tuesday, August 21st, including a visit with the panel at Dr. Davis’s clinic where he heard the presentation about how this new clinic impacts the residents of Lincoln County, including children not presently under insurance. Presenters were : Moderator Desiree DeGiorgio of Complete Insurances, Owner/Broker; Pam Lowder, SFMC Director and Manager/CSC Board Member; Lonnie Rogers, SFMC front desk – Manager/GSC Treasurer; Jason Reading, pharmacist; Al Kooiman, the late John Sexton’s Assistant; Steven Moore, Blue continued on page 7...
