News New Library & Senior Center

by Ryan Foster

The town of Wendell is proposing the renovation of a vacant building to be turned into a new library and senior citizens center. The vacant building is located next to the City Hall and across the street from the city park. Both the current library and the senior citizens center are in need of more space and updated facilities. “Our library is falling apart, the floors are buckling and there is not enough space,” said library director, Annie Burke. Along with the structure falling apart, the building was never insulated resulting in a very high cost to keep the library heated throughout the winter. Elsie Aslett, assistant library director said, “We can’t put all of our books on the shelves because there isn’t enough space.” The problems for the Senior Citizens Center are also significant. Technically, the seniors have to pay rent just to have a space for use. Margaret Presnell said, “We need more room for meals and a place to host activities for the seniors.” She also said, “Some of the activities we would like to have room for would be card games, a pool table, an exercise room and possibly enough extra space for a coffee and social room.” Laverne Silva would like to also implement a commercial grade kitchen and possibly a full time chef. Silva said,

Building to Renovate “We need a better kitchen and larger area to feed the seniors, also we want to be able to offer food more than just once a week like we are now.” “It’s all up to the public to get this facility renovated and updated,” said Brad Christopherson, City Administrator. He also said, “The new building is in a perfect location adjacent to the park and will have enough room to rent out events to people in Wendell.” The only obstacle in Brad’s mind to getting enough votes for the facility is the time frame. Although Brad said, “We will be getting the word out around Wendell more significantly in the weeks to come.” For more information, call 536-5161.

School Year Begins

The 2014-2015 school year has begun for several of our school district. Shoshone and Bliss started classes on Monday while Gooding and Hagerman started today, August 20th. Richfield, Camas, and Wendell will begin classes next Monday, August 25th. Dietrich and North Valley Academy start on September 2nd. Please remember to slow down when driving through school zone. Richfield is looking for bus drivers and all our districts need substitute teachers (call your local school district for more information). Although Dietrich will not begin classes until after Labor Day, they will be hosting a Football Jamboree this Saturday at 5 p.m. Camas may also host a jamboree this Saturday, but that is not certain. Camas football is also returning to 8-Man this year (more on that later). Sports scheduals are available online at each school district, but changes are still being made.
