Risch Introduces Bill to Delay Lava Ridge

U.S. Senator Jim Risch (R-Idaho) has introduced legislation to delay the Lava Ridge Wind Energy Project. This bill would prevent the Secretary of the Interior from authorizing the Lava Ridge Wind Energy Project until a GAO study is conducted to analyze the projects impact to the Minidoka National Historic Site. During the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee business meeting on the Energy Permitting Reform Act, Chairman Joe Manchin (I-W. Va.) made a commitment to place this bill on a business meeting agenda in September.

"The Lava Ridge Wind Energy Project is opposed by virtually all Idahoans and especially the Japanese American community. The Interior Department cannot continue to push through a project without considering the impact to the Minidoka National Historic Site, where Japanese Americans from across the West were incarcerated during World War II," said Risch. "My bill ensures this project does not proceed until the real impacts to Minidoka and our cultural and natural resources are considered." August 14, 2024

2024 Idaho Wildlife License Plates

Whether you buzz around town in a Tesla or an ’89 F-150, the chance to upgrade your vehicle’s license plate artwork is finally here. The 2024 Idaho wildlife license plates are now available - and they benefit a pretty great cause.

The Idaho Fish and Wildlife Foundation (a partner of Idaho Fish and Game) provides Idaho residents with three colorful license plate options: elk, cutthroat trout, and mountain bluebird. All three feature new, original artwork by Idaho artists.

Proceeds from each license plate purchase goes to three distinct causes—all of which are designed to support Fish and Game's wildlife diversity program. It doesn’t matter if you’re a backcountry archery hunter or a backyard birdwatcher: By purchasing an Idaho wildlife license plate, you’re supporting Idaho’s plant and animal life. And here’s how.

The new Idaho bluebird plates run $35 brand new, $25 of which goes to IFWF’s wildlife diversity program. If renewing your plate, the cost is $25, with $15 being set aside for wildlife.

The cutthroat trout plates cost $35 (new) and $15 (renewed).

A small portion of that goes towards the construction and maintenance of non-motorized boating access facilities for anglers.

The elk plates cost $35 (new) and $15 (renewed). The contribution portions are the same as above, either $25 or $15, with a small percentage of that going towards Idaho Fish and Game’s wildlife disease lab and the livestock disease control fund.

Head on over to www.itd.idaho.gov if you’re interested in renewing or purchasing one of these new Idaho wildlife plates. -- -- --

The new bluebird and cutthroat artwork were illustrated by Coeur d’Alene resident Stephen Clark. The new elk design was illustrated by Filer resident Courtney Cunningham.

End of Season Wrap-Up

With summer coming to a close and school starting soon, the bug crew would like to share some of the amazing opportunities and things we did over the summer. This includes the Camas County fair and parade, our bug collection, and presenting to the leaders of the Fairfield Soil Conservation District, one of our sponsors.

For the Camas County fair we set up a booth for people to learn more about biological control. We set up multiple boards with information to look at. We also collected cypho and larinus the day before to show the public. We set up a free raffle with fishing supplies, Jocelyn Perron won the raffle. We did this for two days, each of us taking shifts every hour or so.

During the Camas County parade we had a float that we decorated. We had nets, an inflatable bug, flags, and many more decorations. We threw out candy to the kids, and got sprayed with squirt guns! They called out our float and informed the public about what we do. We had a super fun time and were glad we got to participate in the parade.

For the bug collection we pack big lunches for a two hour road trip to Idaho City, a small town east of Boise. Once we got there we got out the nets and spread out sweeping and collecting bugs for about fifteen minutes each, once we got back we deposited the bugs into little containers. After a thirty minute break we all went out with just the containers and collected them by hand which was much easier than using the nets.

At the Soil Conservation District we all presented about what we do. Emerie talked about a normal day at work from beginning to end. Harper talked about informing the public through fair booths and newspaper articles, and Tyler talked about bug counts while doing sites.

We had a great time all summer doing all these activities with our small group. The fair, parade, and bug collection were all great experiences. We hope next year will be just as great as the last.

Wendell's Class of '69'

The Wendell High School Class of 69 held their 55 year reunion on the weekend of August 2, 3, and 4.

The festivities started with an impromptu gathering at the West Point Store Friday evening. Saturday started early with one group golfing at the Jerome golf course. Another group met in Hagerman to raft on the Snake River. Saturday even was the big gathering at the Jerome Country Club for dinner, dancing and much socializing as friendships were renewed.

Special guests included their Superintendent, Mr. Lawrence LaRue and his wife Peggy from Hagerman and one of their favorite teachers Mrs. Gay Peterson of Twin Falls. A letter from another favorite teacher, Mr. Ed Otton, was read.

The celebration continued Sunday with worship at Living Waters Presbyterian Church, then a picnic in the city park. The class also crossed the street to the South Central Idaho Veterans Monument to honor and recognize classmates and their spouses who served our country during a very turmoil time.

The city Mayor, Rebecca Vipperman, was present with comments about Wendell residents who have answered the call to serve over many years. Flowers were left to honor their service men. This class is extremely bonded and look forward to five years when they will gather again.

obituary

Contance I. Nice

Constance I. Goicoechea Hubsmith Nice, better known as Connie Nice, transitioned from this life on Saturday, August 3, 2024.

Connie was born the second child of a growing Basque family on May 4, 1948, to Rupert and Clara Pagay Goicoechea at St. Valentine Hospital in Wendell, Idaho. Connie’s family moved from Gooding, Idaho, to Richfield, Idaho, to the Eusebio and Jesse Anchustegui Sheep Ranch when she was five years old. Connie would be a part of the Richfield Community for the rest of her life. Life in those days was different. Open range was truly a regular part of life. Crater and Dietrich Buttes were not fenced. Cattle watered in Little Wood River at “water cuts.” The only fences surrounded the farms to hold out the range cattle and sheep. Union Pacific Railroad maintained lines from Shoshone to the section town of Richfield where the tracks split for destinations to Hill City, Idaho, and Ketchum, Idaho. Milk was sold in ten gallon cans.

Connie grew up milking cows, herding cows, rolling bales, chopping thistles, swimming in Little Wood River, riding horses and generally getting into mischief with her siblings. Connie attended Shoshone schools until the eighth grade when her family moved three miles into the Marley Valley area. As a teenager, Connie was proud to have been selected as an Outlaw Day Rodeo Queen. Connie graduated from Richfield High School in 1967. On September 3, 1967, Connie married Ray E. Hubsmith in Elko, Nevada. They were married until Connie and Ray were involved in a train collision in front of his parents’ home in January, 1976. Ray died a week later in February, 1976. As a result, Connie raised two, beautiful daughters with the help and support of the Richfield Community, Irene Renae and Michelle Rae.

Connie milked cows for the Tim Sanders/Mont Johnson Dairy, hauled livestock in a small truck, worked at the Shoshone Sale Yard, and for many years was employed in the potato processing industry. Connie married Kenneth Glen Nice at Richfield, Idaho. Ken preceded Connie in death in April, 2011. Connie remained in her home in Richfield until a fall, and related injury, made living alone no longer feasible. She has resided at Ashley Manor in Jerome, Idaho, for the last six years.

Connie was known to be an independent soul and lived life to the cadence of her unique melody. Over the years, she was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Shoshone and St. Russell’s Catholic Church in Richfield. She was a past member of the Richfield Grange, Richfield PTA, and proud to have earned her twenty year chip of sobriety from Alcoholics Anonymous.

Connie was preceded in death by her parents, Rupert and Clara Pagay Goicoechea, husbands, Ray Hubsmith and Ken Nice, brother, Richard Goicoechea (Cathy), sister, Marie Buttcane (Charles), her in-laws, Fred and Irene Hubsmith, brother-in-law, Jack Hubsmith, sisters-in-law, Fern Coates (Burl) and Marjorie Stevens and a host of family and friends.

Connie is survived by her daughters, Irene Renae Call (Holbrook) and Michelle Rae Irish (Rocky), brothers, Roger and Ronnie Goicoechea, Twelve grandchildren, Hawk (Zoe), Hunter (Julie), Brooke (Andrew Spyhalski), Forest, and Reed Call; Carissa (Anthony Ojeda), William, and Benett Richards; Brayden (Olivia), Raely (Robert Evans), Cyla, and Waycee Irish; and five great grandchildren. She is also survived by brother-in-law, Earl Hubsmith (Vickie), sisters-inlaw, Sharon McGaughey (Jim) and Faye Hubsmith (Jack) and a multitude of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Thank you to all of those that have helped, and supported, Connie through the years. Graveside services were held Monday, August 12, 2024, at the Richfield Cemetery, Richfield, Idaho, with a reception at the Richfield City Park following the services.

Carol Rose Kitt

Carol Rose Kitt passed away in Twin Falls on Saturday August 3rd, 2024 at the age of 76.

Carol was born in Havre, MT on January 8th 1948 to Elmer and Erma Casady, the second of four children. She graduated Havre High School in 1966 and was married June 11th of that year to the love of her life, Robert Kitt, at the 6th Avenue Christian Church in Havre. Of this union, 3 Children were born: Kami, Brent and Brian. Robert and Carol moved to Rupert, ID around 1975 and made it their home for many years before moving to Paul, then Burley and eventually Gooding.

After she raised her own children, she and Robert would go on to be foster parents for over 60 children. One of those fosters, Skylar, would become their son and another, Casady, was adopted by Kami to become one of their six grandchildren.

Carol loved art, music and being creative and enjoyed sharing those things with friends and children. She was active with the youth in church, including VBS and Church Camp, Christmas plays and school. Carol attended the Rupert First Christian Church for many years and later the Kimberly Christian church. Her love of God was ever present in her life and in her emulation of His love for all. She always found a smile, a hug or kind words to share with others, even in the most difficult times.

Carol worked outside the home, while raising her children, including working at Round Table Pizza, in the Circulation Dept. at the South Idaho Press, and as a Librarian at Paul Elementary School.

Carol is survived by her husband; four children; six grandchildren, Colton, Mikayla, Kade, Zane, Avery and Casady Rose; two sisters, Deanna (Richard) Lervold and Tami; her brother Joseph (Karla); four Nephews, Scott, Donald, Jimmy and Doug; and two nieces Tina (Dwaine) Omyer and Shayla.
