Health Officials Remind Families to Get Vaccinations Now Avoid the Back-To-School Rush

As we enter the last few weeks of summer break, South Central Public Health District (SCPHD) encourages parents to take advantage of special vaccine clinics in the area to avoid the back-to-school rush for immunizations.

"Immunizations are one of the most powerful tools we have to help prevent the spread of disease," said Tamara Strong, SCPHD School Nurse. "Gathering so many kids from different households into one space gives disease a little better chance to spread and thrive. Vaccines help cut back on that risk and keep our kids and schools healthy so education may stay the priority."

Noxious Never Looked so Beautiful by the Camas Bug Crew Have you ever heard of Dalmatian Toadflax. It is a very noxious weed that used to be sold in flower shops. Since it has such a beautiful color many people thought it was harmless. This thought was a terrible assumption. The weed soon spread like crazy. Fortunately though this is where the biological control comes in. In the next few paragraphs you will learn about how we conquered this difficult problem.

Dalmatian toadflax is a perennial that grows up to 4 feet tall. Its a waxy green leaves are heart shaped, 1 to 3 inches long, and clasp the stem. Flowers are 1 inch long (excluding the ½-inch spur), yellow, often tinged with orange or red, and similar in shape to a snapdragon.plants flower from midsummer to fall. Seeds are produced in a ½-inch pod and are irregularly wing angled. A single plant may produce up to 500,000 seeds in a season which may remain viable in the soil for up to 10 years. This plant also reproduces vegetatively by stems that develop from adventitious buds on primary and creeping lateral roots. It is usually associated with sparsely vegetated areas, such as roadsides, abandoned or unmanaged land, gravel pits, and disrubed pastures and rangelands. It is found in most countries in idaho. This invasive plant and other Linaria species are reportedly toxic to Mecinuslivestock.janiformus is a toadflax stem-mining weevil. Adult MEJA are small, somewhat elongated bluish black weevils which emerge from last year’s infested Dalmatian toadflax stems in AprilMay. Adult MEJA feed on toadflax stems that are at least 0.04 inches in diameter and feed on leaves and stems from June to mid-July before mating and laying eggs inside new shoots. The eggs typically hatch in 6-7 days. Larvae tunnel within the toadflax stem for 23 to 34 days moving no more than 1.2 inches from where the egg was laid. Pupation occurs within the stem. Adult feeding on stems and leaves has a limited impact on the plant. Larval mining impacts the plant by cousin premature wilting and shoots and suppressing flower formation.MEJA overwinter as adults inside their pupation chamber. The effects of the weevil on the plant are reportedly enhanced under drought stress Don't let this flower-like weed take over your yard. This weed spreads very aggressively. Today you have read about these beautiful yet noxious plants. This knowledge could help you prevent the spread of these plants all over. As more and more people find out about these plants the plants will most likely become sustainable again. This would make them more balanced in the ecosystem and less invasive. Hopefully you have learned a lot and can help spread the word about these crazy plants.

Allow me to introduce myself! My name is Kelsey John son, I am a native of Idaho, but I also spent some time in Wyoming when I attended Northwest College to be on their collegiate livestock judging team. Growing up, I was heavily involved in 4-H and FFA programs showing cattle and judging as well as holding several leadership positions. I knew from a young age I wanted to be a teacher someday, and as I made my way through high school, I found my home in the Ag department, which solidified my decision to teach agriculture. As I continued my education, I began tossing around the idea of becoming a county extension educator. Thus, my journey with 4-H internships had begun. Camas County will be my third internship with local 4-H offices. One thing that strikes me about this county is that what it may lack in size is certainly made up for in quality. Each kid that I was blessed to have the opportunity to work with this summer put more pride and hard work into their project than I have seen in any other county. Not only that, but the community support these young members receive is overwhelming, to say the least. It has been truly amazing to watch these kids grow so much in such a short amount of time, and I can say with the most confidence that the future's so bright for every last one of them. As for myself, I would like to sincerely thank several members of the community that welcomed me into their homes this summer. This internship has been nothing short of amazing, and it wouldn't have been possible without the kindness of those individuals.

By Will Lubenau, Fisheries Biologist When summer temperatures rise, many anglers in Idaho look to alpine lakes to escape the heat, get away from summer crowds, see some gorgeous scenery, and catch some trout. While not as popular as the lakes and streams you can drive to, some dedicated anglers are willing to put in the effort to access remote alpine lakes. With over 1,000 alpine lakes containing at least one species of trout, Idaho anglers can scatter far and wide in search of the catch of a lifetime. Typically, Fish and Game stocks alpine lakes on a three-year rotation (so, lakes receive fish once every three years). Because of the remoteness and difficulty in reaching many lakes, fish are stocked at small sizes, which makes them much easier to transport. Rainbow Trout and cutthroat trout fry are the most commonly stocked fish and are normally stocked at about 1.5 inches in length. Most alpine lakes are stocked by fixed-wing aircraft, which drop the trout fry as the plane flies over the lake. Trout actually survive the drop quite well, and it usually takes 2-3 years for stocked trout fry to reach 10-12 inches in length. After stocking, IDFG monitors waters periodically by hiking into them and setting gill nets to sample the fish populations. Data are collected on how many fish are present, how fast the fish are growing, and whether the fish that are present are wild or stocked. This process of building fisheries in alpine lakes has worked well in the past and angler satisfaction is typically high. While this formula has worked well for managing most alpine lake fisheries, biologists are al ways looking to make improvements. For example, could stocking slightly larger trout in alpine lakes result in better fish survival or better size that would ultimately translate to better fishing? To answer that question, Fish and Game biologists began a new study comparing the success of stocking two sizes of trout. They started stocking 2.5-inch Rainbow Trout in one set of alpine lakes, and 1.5-inch Rainbow Trout in another set of lakes to compare growth and survival of the two groups of fish. Both groups of fish have their benefits when it comes to contributing to remote fishing oppor tunities. The larger 2.5-inch trout have more fat reserves, which could help them survive as they learn and adjust to life outside of the hatchery.

Stocking fish at a slightly larger size might also mean that fish would be larger when they are caught by anglers, resulting in higher angler satisfaction. However, 1.5-inch fish may survive just as well as the 2.5-inch fish when dropped from an airplane. If there’s no noticeable benefit to stocking larger fish, stocking smaller fish is more efficient and less expensive. The bottom line is to determine whether the cost to stock larger fry will ultimately pay off in better fishing. Fry for this study were first stocked in 2019 and 2020, and biologists will be surveying the lakes in 2022 and 2023. By winter of 2023, we will know which size is the “winner”. Stay tuned for a follow-up article about 18 months from now where we will summarize the results! -- -Seats Available For Trapper Education
