News “Fair-A-Dise” in Gooding

The Gooding County Fair begins next Monday, August 15th. All Open Class items (except flowers and garden produce) will be accepted from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. The flower exibit will be open for entries on Tuesday, August 16th, from 4 to 8 p.m. and field crops can be brought in on Wednesday morning at 8 a.m. Wednesday evening, August 17th, the parade will roll down Main Street at 7:00 p.m. Sign up begins at 4 p.m. behind ISDB. Large entries (tractors, trucks, etc.) can line up along Main Street south of 13th Avenue. There is no fee to enter, but if you have any questions, contact Pete Etchart at the Gooding Valley County Store. This year’s theme is “Fair-a-dise.” After the parade you can head on over

to the fairgrounds for Family Night at the Carnival ($1 rides) or stick around downtown at the Sidetrack Bar for the Street Dance featuring Dirty Johnny. Or, you can get your first taste of rodeo with the WPRA Barrel Racing Slack event starting at 9 p.m. All fair exhibits are open for public viewing on Thursday from 10 to 10. Thursday, August 18th, is also Family Night at the Rodeo starting at 8:00 p.m. Friday, August 19th, is Tough Enough to Wear Pink - luncheon and live auction at 12 noon, and rodeo at 8 p.m. The 4H/FFA Livestock Sale will be held on Saturday, August 20th, at 10 a.m. Special event this year: after Saturday’s rodeo, stick around for Bullfighters Only. Six of the world’s top bullfighters will go head to head with some of the country’s best bulls. The 2016 Gooding County Fair will wrap up on Sunday morning with Cowboy Church - 9:00 a.m. at the Commercial Building.

Geocaching at West Magic

On Saturday, August 13th, the West Magic Lake Recreation Club will host a Geocaching ATV Ride (treasure hunting) beginning at 10 a.m. Geocaching is an outdoor treasure hunting game using GPS-enabled devices. Participants navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates and then attempt to find the geocache (container) hidden at that location.

Morman Reservoir Potential Heath Risk

On Monday, August 8th, the Camas County Commissioner issued a warning regarding Morman Reservoir located five miles south of Fairfield. “It appears a harmful blume of Blue-Green algae is present in Morman Reservoir. The DEQ has not confirmed this with official results from their test, but precautions should be taken.” Blue-green algae is common in freshwater lakes and ponds. Problems occur when specific types of photosynthetic bacteria (cyanobacteria, aka blue-green algae) form blooms (visible, dense build-ups). Under certain conditions, this may produce harmful toxins (not all blooms are toxic). Generally, large populations of blue-green algae are required to produce toxins at a high enough level to affect those using the water for drinking or recreational use. These toxins affect nerves, liver and skin, and can sicken continued on page 4
