Medical Center Shelterbelt Project
Trees serve many purposes: shade, beauty, food (nuts and fruit), and in our area, protection against the wind. While most of the City of Fairfield is protected from wind, out on the western edge of town the wind can be big problem, especially at the Camas Medical Services building. During the winter, drifting snow covers walkways, the driveway, and the helipad, and it is a constant battle to keep those areas clear and safe for people needing to use the facilities. Last year, Wes Fields
called the Camas Conservation District (CCD) expressing concern about this problem and offered donate trees for a shelterbelt project. The CCD coordinated meetings with Wes, Medical Services personnel, city and county officials, and NRCS representative Bob Josaitis. Mr. Josaitis has drafted a cost effective design for the area west of the clinic and the City of Fairfield has completed the installation of irrigation water main lines to the site. Donation of pipe for lateral distribution lines is pending, and
the CCD has dedicated $800 to the project. This community effort is off to a great start, but help is needed to complete the project. There are two ways you can participate: funding for distribution line equipment, landscape fabric, mulch, etc. is still needed; manual labor (irrigation equipment installation, landscape fiber and mulch placement, tree planting, etc.) is also needed. During the Camas County Fair being held this weekend, be sure to stop by the CCD booth and see what you can do to help your community. You can also contact the CCD at: 208-764-3223 or P.O. Box 156, Fairfield, ID. All monetary donations are tax deductible. (Be sure to check out the city’s other tree project at the Fairfield City Park.)
