A critical part of successful weed biological control programs is moni toring the impact of biological control agents (insects) on the target weed. Monitoring should be conducted on an annual basis for a number of years to show trends. Gathering baseline monitoring data before a new biological agent is released is critical to determining impacts. White Top (Hoary Cress) falls in this pre-release window.
SAGE-GROUSE
Statewide Sage-grouse populations increased 26 percent in 2022 compared to 2021, but are still down 28 percent from 2016. Trends were up statewide in 2022, with modest increases across southern Idaho. White-top is a perennial mustard that reproduces both vegetaively and by seed. The deep rotted, creeping plant can grow to 9 cm tall and invade crops, riparian areas, and rangelands. After its introduction into North America from Eurasia in the late 19th century, white-top has spread aggressively and is now listed as “noxious” in at least 24 states. Leaves are grayish-green, lanceshaped, clasping, and up to 10 cm long. Flowers are white, 0.5 across and bloom from April to May. The conspicuous dense flower clusters appear flat-topped early in the season, but this characteristic disappears as the stem elongates. FLowering stems contain an average of 2,300 seed pods. Seed pods are heart-shaped and contain two small, flat seeds that can remain viable for at least 3 years.

The Idaho State Department of Agriculture, in conjunction with the University of Idaho, Nez Perce Biocontrol Center, and federal land management agencies, has developed the Standard Impact Monitoring Protocol (SIMP) to enable land managers to take a more active role in prerelease monitoring in preparation for the new biological control agent, Ceutorhynchus cardariae (CECA), a system-galling weevil, and its target weed, white-top (Lepidium Draba). This monitor ing protocol was designed to be implemented by land managers in a timely manner and to provide pre-release monitoring data which will enable land managers and researchers to accurately quantify the impact of CECA once it isInreleased.conclusion, although white top is in its pre-release stage, we are look ing forward to the time when we can release insects for the plant. They must go through rigorous trials to make sure they don’t kill plants they are not supposed to. Until that time, we all need to do our part to limit its spread. Look for us at the Camas County Fair.

In our State of Idaho, we have diverse agri cultural with lots of food products. Why are we not at the top of the list as far as hungerless families? Our state should lead with fewer hungry families. Once again, the math doesn’t work very well. Maybe I’m not very good with math, but I think some basics were obtained during my school years. Back to the bread, to get a pound from a pound, perhaps the fillers are the basis in which bread is weighed. Long years ago, bread and gasoline stayed close to the same price. Today, with the price of gasoline going up (and down) the ratio changes from day to day. Still bread and wheat stays the same ol’ purchase price year after year. Maybe our government is giving us the “fill er” and not the real scoop. At the Boston Tea Party the British were not invited to throw the tea overboard into the harbor to protest unfair tax “fillers.” Maybe we need to have a bread party... Yeah, a Bread Party! This time we should invite our leaders to join us. Instead of bread we could serve the “filler” on mussel shells or something similar. We the people could say, “but that is the way it is.” Maybe it won’t all be about the math, whereas we are all shorted. Maybe we need a little English too. Pound for pound, this is my “Cup of Tee” on the short side.

I didn’t miss the 100o middle of it. More so, I missed some "Ice" tea. I was absent because I was hauling wheat to its shipping destination. I was hauling the grain in a ten wheel dump hoist truck. The doors that accommodate hauling silage corn were sealed shut to prevent leakage, and all I had was 12 inch square door to unload the wheat. The building I was delivering to was about three stories tall, tin roofed, and full of grain. With the existing 100o weather and the wheat putting off its own heat, things were warm. To add extra heat, I had to hand unload the remainder that wouldn’t go through the 12 inch opening. As I looked at the wheat in the barn type shed, I wondered how much wheat it took to make a loaf of bread. The answer... I was told... was 60 loaves of bread to the bushel. A bushel weighs 60 pounds. So, if my math serves me right, about a pound of grain per loaf of bread (which is a pound). Somehow, the mathematics doesn’t seem to jive to me. You start with pound of mate rial, process it, and still end up with a pound? The loads of grain I deliver are about 25,000 pounds. That is a lot of bread with my truck loads alone, not counting the rest of the wheat in a 30 foot high building.

U.S. Senators Jim Risch and Mike Crapo (R-Idaho) praised Senate passage of the Water Re sources Development Act (WRDA). The legislation, which passed 93-1, will reinforce western water resilience and ensure the Army Corps of Engineers carries out water projects responsibly. "It is critical we maintain the water facilities we already have, and I was proud to fight for lan guage that protected the important energy, flood control, navigation, and irrigation benefits these Army Corps projects provide Idaho," said Risch. "More broadly, WRDA will ensure the West is equipped to meet water resource challenges through improvements in flood control, ports, and inland"Goodwaterways."Neighbor Authority (GNA) plays a key part in preventing forest fires and is a prime example of what can be achieved when agencies work together to implement a shared vision of healthy, productive lands," Crapo said. "Collaboration between Senator Risch, Governor Brad Little, and me ensured this legislation will extend GNA to the Army Corps to protect more of Idaho's precious land."

Kerri’s childhood was spent in Gooding where she attended school and graduated in 2003. From a very young age Kerri was a passionate animal lover, rescuing every stray animal she came across. Occasionally without her parents’ knowledge, a stray dog or cat would be living in her room for a day or two until either she confessed or was able to find the perfect home. Kerri’s love of animals continued into her adulthood and she dedicated much of her free time to volunteering to transport or foster an animal in need.
She had quite a few battles with cancer and won every time, even during the cancer she still found a way to make it fun. She dyed her hair all sorts of funny colors until it eventually fell out, she then resorted to fun wigs and even these quirky hats, one her grandchildren dubbed the ‘chicken hat’ because it resembled a chicken. She had a black teacup chihuahua - M&M whom she loved very much. Later in her life she became a part of the Red Hat Ladies, and thoroughly enjoyed out ings with them, even bringing her grandchildren to their events. She also enjoyed having lunch with The Class of ‘64 Ladies and was always so excited to be able to go spend that time with her friends.
