News Pilates is for Everyone!

Last year, Matt & Diane McFerran took over the Soldier Mountain Ski resort and experienced one of the best ski seasons the mountain has had in a long time. However, the move from Bend, Oregon, was not without sacrifice. Mrs. McFerran left behind a successful Pilates studio. A couple of weeks ago, Diane began offering pilates classes at the Soldier Mountain Lodge. Pilates (pronounced pi’l-ah-teez) is similar to yoga but emphasizes strength, flexibility, muscular endurance, coordination, and balance — with a much lower chance of injury than with other forms of exercise. Pilates was developed by Joseph Pilates, a former carpenter and gymnast, who invented the exercise

for injured soldiers and dancers. Many of the moves were inspired by yoga and/or patterned after the movements of zoo animals such as swans, seals, and big cats. This form of exercise requires you to engage your whole body. The moves take lots of concentration - you can’t simply go through the motions. And then, just when you think you’ve mastered a particular move, pilates has another version that’s a little different and a little harder. On August 20th & 21st there will be a Mountain Pilates Escape at Soldier Mountain. This one night, two day minivacation is a perfect blend of outdoor fun, rejuvenating spa treatments and invigorating Pilates. If you think this is something for you, give Diane a call at 541-480-7561 or email her at Diane@ soldiermountain.com Men and women are welcome.

Soldier Mountain Trail Project

The Soldier Mountain Ski Area is proposing to implement a number of improvements within the permitted ski area boundary on the Fairfield Ranger District of the Sawtooth National Forest. Projects include constructing a 40’x100’storage building in the existing overflow parking lot that is south of the magic carpet area. This structure would allow indoor storage and a work place for groomers and other equipment. In addition, the ski hill proposes to construct approximately 7.5 miles of downhill mountain bike trail and a mountain bike skills park. These trails would ultimately be “lift-assisted” and offer a new opportunity for summer recreation on Soldier Mountain. “We hope you will take the time to review the scoping report and provide us with your comments,” says Mike Dettori, Fairfield District Ranger. Comments regarding this proposal will be most useful if received by August 29, 2016. continued on page 3
