NAPA Auto Parts Comes to Wendell Idaho Rodeo

This Saturday, August 1st, NAPA Auto Parts of Wendell is set to open its doors at 460 North Idaho in Wendell. This store is the latest in a group of regional NAPA stores owned by Bob Dyson, headquartered in Twin Falls. Under the leadership of Wendell

resident Sheena Raidiger, this store will strive to provide an experienced team of parts professionals that has been part of NAPA for over 50 years. NAPA carries parts for automotive, agriculture, heavy duty and lawn and garden. They also make hydraulic hoses to order. In addition to regular parts service out of the NAPA Distribution Center, NAPA Wendell will also get daily parts shuttle service out of the Dyson NAPA Warehouse in Twin Falls. Store hours will be Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. until 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 8 until 5. You can call ahead for parts at 208-536-6118.

The Myth of Food Expiration Dates If you had three bags of groceries and dropped one of them on the way to your car, would you turn around and pick it up before going home? While that might seem like a silly question, Americans waste that much food (or more) every year by either throwing it away or by refusing to buy food that is less than perfect. Our landfills are literally filled with mountains of perfectly eatable food. That wasted food (which costs $100 billion annually to produce) could completely eliminate hunger in America, but we are a na-

tion full of misconceptions regarding what is safe to eat and what is not. A large amount of the food we waste is due to the myth of “expiration dates.” With the exception of infant formula and baby food, the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) DOES NOT require food dates - this information is entirely at the discretion of manufacturers. Additionally, stores are not legally required to remove food from the shelf once the expiration date has passed. Meat is the one product you should pay attention to the package date, unless you freeze it. Freezing will pre-

serve meat for 6 months or longer. With the advent of ultra-pasteurization, most dairy products can last well beyond the date printed on the package. If stored at or below 40°F, unopened milk will still be good 7-10 days after the date. Eggs are good for at least a month if refrigerated. Canned foods may lose a bit of aesthetic appeal over time, but an undamaged can will last practically forever. As you can see, the safety of food is all about how you store it once you get it home. So, don’t waste your food, eat it. For more information, goto www.eatbydate.com
