Fairfield Downtown Revitalization
As Camas County gets ready for their County Fair, the City of Fairfield is prepairing to remove the old sidewalks from the downtown area, begining as soon as the festivities are done. For several years, the City of Fairfield has worked hard to improve the downtown area with the addition of street lamps and landscaping. However, the deteriorating condition of the sidewalks has been an expensive roadblock to improving the look of the city. In May the city was awarded a $375,000 Idaho Community Development Block Grant by the Department of Commerce. These funds will be used to replace sidewalks, build curbs, gutters and storm water catch basins, create handicapped accessible street corners, and install lighting to improve safety and aesthetics. The original plan was to work on both sides of Soldier Road from Garnet Avenue (the Strickland Real Estate building) to Camas Avenue (the Post Office). Certain design challenges arose on the east side of
the street at Willow avenue, and it was decided that improving the sidewalk in front of the school was more important. Hopefully the east side of Soldier Road from Willow to Garnet can be completed next year, along with other projects that will help revitalize the downtown area and make Fairfield more attractive to travelers and recreationists. As part of in-kind contributions, both the city and the county will be working on the sidewalk removal part of this project. Bids for the concrete and construction are now being accepted (see legal notices).

The Fleck Summett fire north of Fairfield was brought under control last Thursday. The fire, which consumed mostly sagebrush and grass, started near the South Fork of the Boise River and moved up into the timber (lodgepole pine and spruce). Just over 500 acres of forest were burned and the cause of the Fire is under investigation. Crews on the fire included 4 Hot Shot Crews, a Type 2 Interagency Crew, 4 Engines, and 4 Helicopters. The smoke currently visable over Soldier Mountain is from the Pioneer fire north of Idaho City. Wind has push that fire to over 3700 acres and has consumed at least three sturctures.
