Gooding Fire Departments More Than Just Fire

Gooding Search & Rescue hasn’t had an official call in almost three years. In addition, they are down to two active members, and in the event of an emergency, this makes it hard to respond effectively. Because of this, Gooding County Sheriff Shaun Gough and S&R members have agreed to disband the organization. Fortunately, in a joint effort between Gooding County’s fire departments, a Special Operations Rescue Team (SORT) was recently started. Along with basic search and rescue, SORT members learn to provide medical attention in hazardous locations. It is not uncommon for an individual to need medical attention before they are moved to an ambulance. If the injured person is located on the side of a cliff, in rapid moving water, or in an inaccessible part of a factory, getting an EMT to that person is an extra challenge. Whether it means using technical rope techniques or water crafts, the goal is to get an EMT to an injured person as quick as possible, then safely move that person from the hazardous location to medical transport. Gooding Fire Chef, Brandon Covey (above photo), said he is excited to be able to provide this service to the communities of Gooding County. “We hope to add SCUBA capabilities in the near future, but SORT is already a big plus for the safety of our residents.” He also thanked Glanbia for their donation towards rescue equipment. For those of you who might be interested in becoming part of the Gooding Fire Department, Chef Covey said they are always looking for new members. You have to be in good to excellent physical condition (they often carry 100 pounds or more of equipment). Join something great... and help keep your community safe!
