WWII Veteran Receives Bronze Star On June 18th, 2016, VFW Post 3001 along with members of the American Legion Post 46 gathered at the Veteran’s Memorial in Jerome’s South Park to present a Bronze Star to the family of WWII Veteran, Raymond Appell. In March of 1945, the U.S. Army finally pushed the German army back across the Siegfried Line Germany’s prewar boundary along the western front. The Siegfried Line was network of more than 18,000 bunkers, tunnels and tank traps, that ran 390 miles from the Netherlands to the border of Switzerland. During this offensive Private First Class Appell, a member of the 254th Infantry Regiment, was wounded during a battle near Hartungshof, Germany (just
southeast of Luxembourg). Dispite his injuries he held his position. During a counterattack Raymond was again wounded, and true to form, he continued to fire his rifle, even while medical aid bandaged his wounds. For his selfless bravery and devotion to duty during the battle that took place on March 3, 1945, Private First Class Raymond Ap-
pell was awarded the Bronze Star. The medal, however, was never sent to the brave soldier. Bob Morgado, a member of VFW Post 3001, spearheaded the effort to rectifiy this oversight. On June 18th past State VFW Commander George Peacock and Samantha Marshall from Senator Crapo’s office presented the award.
