On Monday, Memorial Day services were held around the nation to honor our military heros. In some locations it was simply the display of flags, throughout our towns and on the graves of those who gave their lives to protect our freedoms. Other communities gave full honors to those who so richly deserve our respect. May God bless and protect all of us for another year.
Farmers Can Submit CFAP Applications News Release
As of Tuesday, May 26th, eligible farmers and ranchers are able to begin submitting applications for the Coronavirus Food Assistance Program (CFAP) administered by USDA. The program is the result of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act, which was supported by the entire Idaho Delegation, and includes $16 billion to provide immediate relief through direct payments to farmers and ranchers. Due to the rapidly evolving nature of the pandemic, farmers and ranchers are encouraged to submit their application in a timely manner. To apply, farmers are encouraged to contact their local Farm Service Agency (FSA) office. Meetings are currently by appointment only, but local offices are available by phone and email for help processing the application. Applicants are also encouraged to visit www.farmers.gov/ cfap for details on information needed to apply, the program, and eligibility. The program is open to a large range of commodities including but not limited to potatoes, dairy, livestock, malting barley, and many more. The USDA has also asked for more information on aquaculture and nurseries to be better understand the impacts due to COVID-19. The Idaho Delegation has been closely following the agriculture losses due to the economic downturn and the associated shutdowns of the food service industry and communicating the needs of Idaho agriculture directly to USDA Secretary Sonny Perdue. The Delegation has sent letters to USDA outlining the effects of COVID-19 to dairy, potato, onion, cattle, sheep, grain, and hops production to ensure the CFAP program takes into account the diverse representation of the Idaho agricultural industry which is more than 20 percent of Idaho’s economy. The Idaho Delegation also sent letters to USDA expressing concerns with payment limitations given the larger sized farming and ranching operations in Idaho. The final rule on CFAP increased payment limitations from the original proposal.

Summertime Events ???
Summer is a great opportunity to enjoy community events, however, the uncertainty of trying to plan ahead for large gatherings this year has been a big challenge. Organizations spend months planning events to make sure they have enough vendors and performers. Popular events can be book-uped a year in advance, and to make sure you know about it, advertising has to take place. The shutdown orders due to Covid-19 have made it nearly impossible to plan for some events. Events like Shoshone’s “Arts in the Park,” Camas County’s “Lily Days,” and Richfield’s “Outlaw Day” have been cancelled for this year. On the positive side, other events like the Fishing Derby in Fairfield (June 6th at the Kid’s Pond east of town) will still take place. All three County Fairs (Lincoln, Camas & Gooding) are a go as well, including the rodeos - at least for now. Farmers Markets around the area will be starting up soon, including the Gooding Market on June 2nd (see page 2...). These people are local farmers and crafters who need your support, and there is no better place for fresh produce. And... while it may be tempting to head to the big city for gardening and landscaping supplies, there are businesses in your community that have nearly everything you need to make your home beautiful. Look around and think local!
