Local Artists Win at Art & Soul

Last week, Art & Soul of Magic Valley announced the winners of their 2017 Art Competition. Among the winner were two artists from Gooding County - Sharon Breshears and Roy Mason. In the late fall of 2016, Sharon Breshears of Gooding was traveling north of Ketchum on the Stanley Lake Inlet Road when she came upon an extraordinary moment. “While I was out exploring one early misty morning, I came upon this scene of Mt. McGowan reflecting it’s wintry beauty on the flooded road ahead of me. It literally took my breath away!” The result of that moment was 40” by 60” photograph printed on metal called “Through the Mist” which she entered in this year’s Art & Soul contest. The photo won 3rd Place in the overall contest and $2500. Award winning painter and teacher from Wendell, Roy Mason, entered a watercolor called “Pole Creek

2” in this year’s contest. Real Simon Cache to be Displayed

To celebrate the return of some five replicas of the Simon Clovis Cache, the Herrett Center for Arts and Science will bring out the real Simon Cache this Saturday, May 20 for the public to see from 1 to 4 p.m. The collection generated significant local interest following the recent theft and subsequent recovery of Simon Clovis Cache replicas. The Herrett Center is grateful to the community and the Twin Falls Police Department for their help in locating the stolen replicas, which were expensive to create. This is a good chance to learn more about the cache and get a glimpse of Southern Idaho prehistory. During routine farm excavation work in 1961, Bill Simon, Jr. unearthed a collection of flaked stone tools on his family’s property northeast of Fairfield. The collection turned out to be a cache of

stone tools representing some of the oldest and finest lithic artifacts ever discovered in the state of Idaho. The cache is made up of points, blades, and bifaces from the Clovis culture, a widespread group of big-game hunters once prevalent throughout North America 11 to 12-thousand years ago. Thirty-two of the original artifacts were donated by the Simon family to the Herrett Center for Arts and Science in 1997. A smaller number of other pieces from the site are held in other museums around the country. The artifacts are kept locked in a Herrett vault and are normally examined only by CSI anthropology students and visiting anthropologists. During the May 20 viewing in the Herrett Center’s Frost/Eccles Library, the display case will be under constant guard.
