News Flood Waters Rise Again
During the last week, thunder storms brought as much as two inches of rain to some areas of south central Idaho. The rain combined with warm temperatures increased snowmelt in the mountains and increased stream flows.
At the end of March, Camas Creek reach a stream flow of nearly 5,000 cfs (cubic feet per second). That, combined with over 1,000 cfs from the Big Wood River, caused Magic Reservoir to discharge over 7.000 cfs for almost three days, and left the folks at West Magic no way to leave for several days. Further down stream, flooding damaged homes and roadways. The stream flow situation is now reversed with Camas Creek running at 1,300 cfs, and the Big Wood running at 3,800 cfs and continuing to increase. Magic Reservoir is currently discharging at 6,500 cfs as the Big Wood Canal Company is trying to keep ahead of the even bigger stream flows expected over the next couple of weeks. The National Weather Service is predicting warming temperatures through Thursday with highs in the mid to high 70’s. Beginning on Friday, more rain is expected. flooding that took place in early April. Blaine County has been hit the hardest by the current flooding, which is expected to continue for at least two weeks. All of that water is, and will be, flowing into Magic Reservoir, and as it is released, will move quickly towards Lincoln and Gooding counties. Of course, high water flows are not all bad. If you get the chance, visit the Malad River Gorge. It is absolutely spectacular. REMINDER: Avoid walking or driving through flood waters. Just 6 inches of rapidly moving water can knock you down and 2 feet of water can sweep your vehicle away. And please, DO NOT drive around “Road Closed” signs. They are for your own protection.
