National Day of Prayer

In 1952, Conrad Hilton of Hilton Hotels and Senator Frank Carlson of Kansas spearheaded an effort to pass a law that, "The President shall set aside and proclaim a suitable day each year, other than a Sunday, as a National Day of Prayer, on which the people of the United States may turn to God in prayer and meditation at churches, in groups, and as individuals."

Over the next 36 years, various individuals work to pass a law designating a specific day of each year as a National Day of Prayer. In 1988, a true bipartisan group of legislators passed Public Law 100-307 in both the Senate and the House of Representatives, and on May 5, 1988, President Ronald Reagan sign the law designating the first Thursday in May as the annual observance for the National Day of Prayer.

In 1990, President George Bush signed a proclamation stating, "Since the approval of the joint resolution of the Congress on April 17, 1952, calling for the designation of a specific day to be set aside each year as a National Day of Prayer, recognition of such a day has become a cherished annual event. Each President since then has proclaimed a National Day of Prayer annually under the authority of that resolution, continuing a tradition that actually dates back to the Continental Congress, which issued the first official proclamation for a National Day of Prayer on July 12, 1775. By Public Law 100-307, the first Thursday in May of each year has been set aside as a National Day of Prayer."

President Bush also asked for a special prayer. "I ask my fellow Americans to join with me in prayer for our children. Let us strive to help each of them sink their roots into the rich soil of God's love for the beings He has made in His own image. Let us show them through prayer that we, too, like our Nation's Founders, seek our shelter -- our rock and our salvation -- in the arms of God."

This Thursday, May 2nd, you are encouraged to pray for our nation and our world. In recognition the National Day of Prayer, the Fairfield Community Church will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. for self-guided prayer. They will have an organized prayer time at noon in the sanctuary. Prayer guides will be available as well as prayer walk guides if you would like to take a walk or drive around the community to pray for the school, city hall, sheriff's department, etc. For questions call Pastor Mike at the Community Church 208-764-2312.

Wherever you are, reach out to your local church for group prayer, or pray by yourself. Either way... God is listening!

Tim Pereira: A Voice for Rural Values

Tim Pereira, a proud product of Gooding County's agricultural heritage, is stepping up to represent the values and needs of District 1 as Gooding County Commissioner.

With roots firmly planted in farming, Pereira's journey from the Dairy Farm to Gooding, Idaho, three decades ago, has been a testament to his commitment to rural life. Alongside his wife Shelly, they've raised their family in the heart of the community, embodying the enduring spirit of Gooding.

Pereira's engagement in the agricultural industry has been unwavering, reflected in the businesses he's built to sustain both his family and the local farming community. His 32-year involvement in the Gooding Elks organization further demonstrates his dedication to serving others, raising funds for scholarships, supporting youth in music, and bolstering local charities and volunteer groups.

A firm believer in the importance of small-town businesses, Pereira sees them as the backbone of Gooding County's economy and way of life. With a deep understanding of rural values and a commitment to community service, Tim Pereira emerges as a strong advocate for District 1, poised to ensure its prosperity and resilience for generations to come.

The Gooding Alternative Learning Center

The Gooding Alternative Learning Center has had a great year! With an enrollment of just under 30, we have seen tremendous academic and personal growth in our student body. We have teachers who are committed and caring, showing a willingness to go the extra mile to help their students reach their potential.

The talent and dedication of our students is impressive. Just in the past few weeks, we’ve had students make beautiful cutting boards in Woodshop, travel to CSI to take a tour of their CTE programs, complete their CPR/First Aid certification, build new picnic tables for the alternative school, and paint a beautiful mural in one of our classrooms.

In our first two years, we graduated fifteen students, and we are excited to see an additional nine students walk across the stage this May. It will be the culmination of years of hard work and dedication. Like all students, these graduates have overcome many challenges and setbacks, finding a way to achieve their education through it all. Each of these nine students has much to be proud of and we share that pride with them.

The Gooding Alternative Learning Center is making a real difference in the lives of the youth of our community. These students are stepping up to the challenge and preparing themselves to become productive and successful adults.

...Fentanyl Awareness Information continued

Fentanyl is a pain medication that is 100 times stronger than morphine. It can be prescribed by physicians, but Idaho is seeing a growing rate of illegal fentanyl being transported in the state. Often, fentanyl is mixed with other illegal substances or fake prescriptions.

On Tuesday, May 7, SCPHD, the Blaine County Sheriff's Office, Men's Second Chance Living, Blaine County Prosecuting Attorney's Office, Blaine County Coroner's Office, and Hailey EMS will present a community panel and information session in Hailey, Idaho: National Fentanyl Awareness Day | Expert Panel and Information Session Tuesday, May 7 at 6 p.m.

Minnie Moore Room | Community Campus 1050 Fox Acres Road ~ Hailey, Idaho

The event will cover fentanyl information, using naloxone to reverse overdose, treating addiction, and substance misuse prevention. There will be time for questions throughout. Topics will include information appropriate for teenagers and adults.

"Exposure to dangerous drugs, especially fentanyl, is becoming more common," said Taylor Bybee, SCPHD Health Education Specialist. "One of the best ways to prevent drug-related deaths and addiction is education. Empowering ourselves with the information we need to avoid substance use, or treat it in a healthy and sustainable way, gives our community more time to fight back and prevent drug-related deaths."

Lora Sandy Silver Lewis

Lora Sandy Silver Lewis went to be with Jesus on April 2, 2024, in her home, surrounded by family. Lora was born on September 7, 1955, the daughter of Alfred and Florence Mary Sandy of Hagerman. Growing up on the family farm and ranch on Billingsley Creek provided an ideal backdrop for childhood exploration. Lora was always a curious, active, and friendly young girl who kept busy finding newborn kittens near the haystack, floating in the creek with friends, and assisting her dad as he milked the cows morning and night. Her activities were varied as she fed the bum lambs in the springtime, along with her older sister, Cheryl, and her younger brother, Robert. It was always exciting to see how many lambs could be fed at once. Lora could usually handle six bottles at once while her youthful stance shook and the fuzzy little lambs eagerly drank. She raised her lamb, Tabitha, to adulthood, and when it came time to show and then sell her lamb, she threw her arms around it, refusing to let go. Of course, her father decided she could keep the lamb as a pet. Tabitha lived a long time and became a lead sheep in the family sheep business. For years to come, Tabitha would come out of the band of sheep to visit Lora.

Lora earned her Master’s Degree in Elementary Education from Idaho State University while teaching in Hagerman. She worked diligently on this accomplishment while being married to Wayne Silver and raising three young children, Lee, Chad, and Anna. Her children have always been at the center of her heart.

With a love of music, Lora relished a chance to dream up musical themes for the grade school concerts. She pulled off beautifully creative musical performances as the children's eyes were glued to her conducting. Music was a highlight of her life. She also enjoyed theater, and in her early adulthood, she was chosen for the lead role in Dilettante’s production of Irene at the CSI Auditorium in Twin Falls.

In recent years, she joined her granddaughter, Allie, in playing piano and violin. Her love of her granddaughter's musical talent was recently fulfilled with her granddaughter's performance in the Dilettante’s production of “School of Rock." Those who have followed Lora online have particularly enjoyed her and her granddaughter’s spontaneous dance numbers. Nothing but joy comes from watching those two “ham it up.”

Rachelle Ann Maxwell Hidalgo, 53, a resident of Richland, Washington, passed away on Friday, April 27, 2024 at Kadlec Regional Medical Center in Richland. Funeral arrangements by Demaray Funeral Service.

Rebecca Steckelberg, 83, a resident of Fairfield, passed away on Saturday, April 27, 2024 at her home in Fairfield. Funeral arrangements by Demaray Funeral Service.

Lora’s love for writing blossomed as she became a young reporter for the Gooding leader, commenting on their 4-H club activities. Her first creative poem spoke of God, the creator, and she could still recite it into adulthood. Her writing skills culminated in the past two years with her series “Growing Up in the Hagerman Valley” being featured in the Magic Valley News. Following in her mother and grandmother's footsteps, she attended all 12 grades in the Hagerman School System, graduating in 1973. Lora filled her days with cheerleading, participating in FHA, the drill team, and singing in the chorus. She was cherished by teachers and classmates alike. She joined her cousin, Diane, on a “People to People” tour overseas, where they went behind the Iron Curtain to Russia shortly after graduating. The stories she would share about that experience were etched in her mind, giving a young girl first-hand experience of what freedom means.

She then attended the University of Idaho, where she pledged the Delta Gamma Sorority. She excelled academically and was tapped for several honorary organizations. Her most fulfilling involvement was with Campus Crusade for Christ, where she led Bible studies and joined other students in sharing their faith on campus. She spent three summers at the Institute of Biblical Studies earning a certificate of completion. Her life passion since that time has been regularly telling others about Jesus and seeing young and old alike come to faith in Christ.

Upon graduating with her bachelor’s degree in elementary education, she began her teaching career, which spanned 40 years, first in Hansen and then most of her career in Hagerman. Whether Lora was teaching 1st, 2nd, or 3rd grades, acting as a reading specialist, or leading music classes, she loved and helped the children far beyond the classroom. Random acts of kindness were the joy of her heart.

Lora’s infectious smile and laughter would light up a room. Her sister, Cheryl, would often say her humor could land her on Comedy Central. Her joyful spirit and love of giving as she toured around Hagerman made everyone smile. Lora always enjoyed being a behind-the-scenes giver, quietly doing small acts of kindness. She often delivered her homemade soups to senior citizens around town or stopped by to pray for a friend. Generous with her time, she was known to spend an hour or more in the local grocery store just to connect and converse with friends, of whom she had many. Her love of family has been demonstrated by being a caregiver to her mother, Florence Mary Sandy, who is celebrating her 101st birthday on May 2nd of this year.

Lora was married to Mark Lewis at the family cabin in Stanley, Idaho, on June 21, 2008. Since then, their morning coffee time has soothed Lora’s heart. She especially loved to walk with Mark along the sunny Florida coastline and enjoy the cool ocean breeze during their trips to visit his brother.

Whatever Lora did she gave her all passionately for her faith, family, and community. “And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.” - Colossians 3:17

Lora’s father, William Alfred Sandy, passed away previously. She is survived by her mother, Florence Mary Sandy; her children, Anna Silver White (Travis White), Chad Silver, and Lee Silver; her granddaughters, Allie Silver and Emerie White; and her siblings, Robert Sandy, Cheryl Sandy-Miller (Steve Miller), and John Sandy (Robin Sandy).

A graveside service will honor Lora at the Hagerman Cemetery on May 4, 2024 at 10:00 am, immediately followed by a Celebration of Life at the Hagerman United Methodist Church - 270 Salmon St E. The family requests everyone to wear bright colors to celebrate in Lora style. www.demarayfuneralservice.com

Jim Sage

Jim Sage, 59, a resident of Gooding, passed away on Friday, April 5, 2024 at the St. Luke's Medical Center in Boise.

Jim D. Sage Born August 19, 1964 to Bobby Jo and Betty Sage. Jim was born in Bakersfield California, and moved to the Shoshone/Dietrich area when he was a young boy where he lived with his 4 sisters and 1 brother. Jim graduated from Dietrich High School, and worked on the family dairy, as well as for the railroad when he was young.

Jim met the love of his life, his soul mate in 1992, Joyce Jacobson Sage. The two were married July 2, 1994, and started their story. Jim worshiped Joyce, he always said she “saved” him, in reality they completed each other. Jim’s love for Joyce was as pure as the fresh falling snow. Their love story will be an envy for all married couples.

As a father, the most important thing to Jim was his family. He always said that his main priority was to make sure his family was taken care of with a roof over their head and food in their belly. His family was and will always be his main priority. The pride that Jim had when he spoke of Dakota, Shaneese, and Aaliyah would make everyone take notice and feel that pride within them. Jim was always there for his children, providing love, support and guidance every step of the way. He was their rock, their protector, and their biggest cheerleader. His children knew they could always count on him, no matter what.

As a friend, Jim was always there to lend a listening ear, offer a shoulder to cry on, or share a laugh with. He was the type of person who would drop everything to help a friend in need and his loyal and caring nature made him a true asset in anyone’s life.

As a coworker, Jim was a team player always willing to pitch in and help out wherever needed. His positive attitude and strong work ethic made him a huge asset to the team, and his presence in the field will be greatly missed.

Jim was the type of person that would give his shirt off his own back if someone needed it. He had a heart of gold and kindness that most people didn’t get the chance to see. Jim loved to do anything outdoors, fishing, hunting, camping, even working. He loved to teach his kids and grandkids how to fish and hunt. Some of his most enjoyable times in the last few years were sitting around a campfire, passing a bottle, and listening to memories of loved ones that have left. Jim loved with all his heart, he worked hard and took pride in the work he did.

Today we celebrate Jim, a man who brought joy and love to all who knew him. He was kind, loving, and supportive. REST IN PEACE Jim, You are the LEGEND!

A celebration of life for Jim will be held on Friday, May 3, 2024 from 5:00 to 10:00 pm at the Hummingbird House in Gooding.
