A REAL STEAM ENGINE!

This Friday, April 21st, a Living Legend will arrive in Gooding for an overnight stop. At the invitation of the Gooding County Historical Society, the Union Pacific restored steam engine, UP844, will chug into Gooding about 11:30 a.m. and depart on April 22 about 10 a.m. From Gooding, UP844 will head to Glenns Ferry for a quick stop (11 to 11:30) before it moves on to Boise. On its return trip, it will make another stop in Glenns Ferry (April 24th from 11:30 to noon), then move on to Shoshone where it will arrive Monday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. The engineer, Ed Dickens, from Cheyenne, Wyoming will talk about the engine and its history. At the Museum, the Magic Valley Model Railroaders will have four different scales of model trains be on display, including a scale model of the original Gooding train depot. The model trains will be on display and running during the event,

and on Saturdays through June. Other events on April 21st will include an Opening Ceremony by the American Legion where the county’s mayors and commissioners will be introduced at 9:15. Craft tables will be available with various handmade crafts for purchase, a blacksmith will show how the metal was worked in earlier days, and the children will enjoy the face painting booth and the Girl Scout cookies available for sale. Designated parking places near the railroad tracks will be featured on the map you may pick up at the Museum and various retail establishments will designate parking areas downtown near the tracks. The area restaurants will feature Steam Engine Specials during the week-end. Don’t miss the beginning of the “Year of the Train” in Gooding County at the Historical Museum April 2122. The Museum is located next to the North Canyon Medical Center at 273 Euskadi behind McDonalds and the Valley Country Store.

Cooper Pavkov of Gooding Advances to Elks Hoop Shoot National Finals

Over the past nine months, tons of young athletes from the across the country stepped up to the line to show off their free throw skills through the Elks Hoop Shoot. Only six will become National Champions. Cooper Pavkov is one of 72 of the nation’s best free throw shooters ages 8 to 13. Cooper’s hard work and dedication has taken him from Gooding to the Elks Hoop Shoot National Finals in Chicago. Last fall, Cooper joined 8- to 13-year-olds across the country who competed in the 2017 Elks National Hoop Shoot Free Throw Contest. Cooper advanced through the local, district and state levels of competition, sinking the most of 25 free throws in his division at each contest. With a score of 24 out of 25 at the Northwest Regional Semi-Finals, Cooper secured his chance to shoot on the foul line at the National Finals. The Elks Hoop Shoot National Finals tip off on April 22, 2017, in Chicago—home to the Elks National Headquarters. At the contest, the 72

National Finalists will compete to sink the most of 25 free throws and claim the National Championship. One boy and one girl in each of three age-groups will earn the prestigious title and have their names permanently inscribed on the Hoop Shoot plaque in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass. Funded by the Elks National Foundation, the Elks Hoop Shoot has been developing gritty kids for more than 40 years, installing characteristics that lead to success, on and off the court.
