CSI Music Department Announces First Ever High School Honor Band
On Monday of this week, the College of Southern Idaho Music Department announced its first-ever high school honor band, which will begin on the evening of Friday, April 13, and conclude with a 4 p.m. performance the following day. Guest conductor will be Dr. Mark Davis Scatterday, Professor of Conducting at the Eastman School of Music and conductor of the famed Eastman Wind Ensemble. This honor band offers a rare opportunity for area students to rehearse and perform under an internationally-known conductor. To apply, participants may go to finearts.csi.edu/music/honorband. Applications will be accepted through Wednesday, April 12, but students receive notification that they have been accepted beginning Monday, April 2. As part of the application process, each student will need a recommendation from their ensemble director or private instructor. The recommendation form is also available on the website. Applicants are also encouraged, though not required, to submit a recording that best illustrates their performing ability. All students accepted will be required to pay a $65 fee and will be responsible for their own food and lodging. If a student who would benefit from participating in the honor band might have difficulty paying the $65 fee, please contact George Halsell directly. There is a limited amount of scholarship money available to help students in this situation. In conjunction with the honor band, CSI is also offering music educators the opportunity to earn one undergraduate credit. To earn the credit, educators must attend all rehearsals and the concert performance, participate in a Saturday lunchtime seminar with Dr. Scatterday, and submit a final paper. If you are interested in enrolling in this course, or if student participants have any questions, please feel free to contact George Halsell, D.M.A. Professor of Music at 208-732-6767 or ghalsell@csi.edu. Thank you for encouraging your band students to take advantage of the CSI Honor Band 2018.

Youth Turkey Hunt
By Roger Phillips, Public Information Specialist Idaho’s general season youth turkey hunt runs Sunday, April 8 through Saturday, April 14. It’s an opportunity for kids to get an early shot at turkey hunting, and a way for parents, grand parents and other adults to mentor a young hunter without affecting their own hunt. Licensed youth who are 10 to 17 years old on April 8 may participate in the general youth turkey hunt. Turkey hunting is exciting, inexpensive, and you don’t need a bunch of specialized gear. Turkeys are often found in fairly accessible places where long hikes into rugged country are not required, and it’s also easy to pack one out if you have a successful hunt. Part of the excitement is talking to a tom turkey with calls is visually and audibly appealing because you often know your quarry is in the vicinity, and the trick is to lure it within shotgun (or archery) range of the waiting hunter.
