“Love What’s Real”

Dietrich Wins District... Barely!

Teen Dating Violence Awareness & Prevention Month

Last week’s 1AD2 Ladies Basketball Championship game between Richfield (16-6) and Dietrich (21-0) was nail biter. The first two quarters ended with the Blue Devil Girls in the lead (15 to 14), but the Richfield Tiger Ladies move ahead in the third quarter - 25 to 23. In the last quarter of the game, Dietrich held Richfield to just 5 points, but only made 7 points, ending the fourth quarter in a tie 30 points each - and forcing them into overtime. While neither team let up the pressure against the other, the Dietrich Girls managed to come out on top with a final score of 36 to 34. The Richfield Girls went on to an easy win (56 to 39) over Meadows Valley in the play-in game held in Glenns Ferry. This gave the Richfield Tiger Ladies their ninth straight trip to the State Tournament. The 1AD2 State Tournament will be held this weekend in Nampa (Nampa High School). On Thursday, February 16th, Richfield will play Mackay at 6:15 p.m. on Thursday and Dietrich will play Clark Fork at 8:00 p.m. If they both win their first game, they will play each other on Friday at 3:00 p.m. The Championship game will be Saturday morning at 9:30 a.m. at the Idaho Center. --------------------Last week, the Hagerman Girls (18-7) won a hard play-in game against Glenns Ferry (49 to 42) in overtime to take a spot in the 1AD1 State Tournament. They will face off against Notus this Thursday at 8:00 p.m. at Columbia High School (Nampa). Hagerman may play Glenns Ferry again during the tournament, but if they do well, the championship game for that division will be Saturday at 11:30 a.m. at the Idaho Center.

Hailey, Idaho - “Studies show that one in five teens say that their friends are victims of dating violence, and nearly half of teens who are in relationships know friends who are verbally abused,” said U.S. Senator Mike Crapo. February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness & Prevention Month. According to Sen. Crapo, the awareness efforts from organizations like The Advocates aid tremendously in making sure victims know where to turn for help, but it is ultimately the responsibility of all of us to speak up when we see violence and stop it. Awareness education works to prevent teen dating violence. According to the Idaho Department of Education’s Idaho Youth Risk Behavior Survey, due to the distribution of educational materials and presentations promoting healthy teen relationships to more than 15,000 Idaho students a year over the last five years, the number of Idaho high school students reporting they have experienced physical violence by a dating partner has dropped from 13.6% in 2007 to10.6% in 2009 to 8.7% in 2011. To boost statewide participation in prevention and education efforts, all Idaho secondary schools received the 2012 “Love What’s Real” toolkit, which includes posters, brochures, bookmarks, lanyards, buttons, stickers, and draw string backpacks.
