Lincoln County Chamber of Commerce Annual Award Banquet Last month, the Lincoln County Chamber of Commerce held its Annual Awards Banquet on Saturday January 19th at the Lincoln County Community Center. The Chamber hosted a potluck dinner where the Chamber and Community Members brought wonderful food. Guest speaker for the night, Dave Wendell, Mayor of Shoshone, spoke about the city’s plans for this coming year and the hope to bring more people to town by beautifying downtown and some of the residential areas. Also, there are plans improve the parks and other recreational activities for the town of Shoshone. President of the Chamber of Commerce, Payson Reese gave an overview of all the things the Chamber had accomplished in 2012, and the goals for 2013. Some of the goals for the Chamber are to have an extensive marketing campaign for the Chamber and its members, and to bring more businesses to the area. Payson said that, “We need to shop local because without our small businesses and local owners we would not have the towns of Shoshone, Dietrich or Richfield. Small continued on page 4.....

Elks National “Hoop Shoot” 2013 On January 25, 2013 several young boys and girls traveled from Camas to Gooding for the area Elks Hoop Shoot. It was an exciting event with students from all over the area. Camas had six participants, one for each age group. Ashly Botz and Trey Smith each took first in their age groups. Keely Wolf took second in her age group. Tristin Schroeder, Skye Sabin and Connor Eaton each participated in their age groups. Everyone had a great time and did a wonderful job. On February 2, 2013 Ashly Botz traveled to Minico High School to participate in the District Hoop Shoot. There were three participants in each age group. Ashly took first place making 17 out of 25 shots. She now has the opportunity to move on to State. She will shoot at the Nampa Christian PK-8 School on February 9, 2013 for a chance to move on to the semifinals in Oregon.
Idaho Youth Challenge Academy Program To Give Idaho High School Dropouts A Second Chance The Idaho Adjutant General, Major General Gary Sayler, today announced that the first director of the new Idaho Youth Challenge Academy is Mr. Derek Newland. This program, which will build its cadet body with Idaho youths aged from 16 to 18 years old, will give high school dropouts a second chance to earn their high school diplomas or GEDs. Newland comes to the position with a strong military background and vast experience working with youths. Prior to accepting this role, he flew and instructed new military pilots in how to fly and perform the mission of the Idaho Air National Guard, in several different aircraft. He later assumed senior management roles as one of the 124th Fighter Wing’s com-
manders and recently retired from his military career as the comptroller/chief financial officer for the Idaho Air National Guard. He was educated through the Boise and Meridian school districts and earned a bachelor’s degree in Business Management from Boise State University in 1981. In his free time he spent over 18 years coaching and mentoring young boys and girls thru the Boise Noon Optimist football program. Newland and his wife Marcie are native Idahoans who currently reside in Boise, where they raised their three sons.
