Expiration Dates Are for Commodities, Not People

A diagnosis of cancer is, for some people, an expiration date. Yet, in all of our communities there are people who have survived that dreaded disease. And those who do, rarely do so alone. This Saturday, October 14th, a Benefit Dinner will be held at the Gooding County Fairgrounds to help Sherry Tschannen Fuqua in her third battle against breast cancer. The dinner will begin at 6:30 p.m. and will include a silent auction and a gun raffle. Tickets are $15 per person or $45 for a family of four. Dinner tickets will be sold at the door. Tickets for the raffle are available from Pete Etchart at the Valley Country Store. There is also a facebook page and donation site (youcaring.com). If you need a tax deduction, contact any member the Gooding Elks (members will be at the event), or you can make a donation at Zion’s Bank. Come on out this weekend and help Sherry’s friends and family help her. It will be a great evening and... there will be live music with Rough Draft.

The Return of the Hagerman Sheep

After a brief vacation, the bronze sheep have returned to their place at the north end of Hagerman. Last Thursday, volunteers worked in the cool fall weather to replace the sheep that were damaged earlier this year, just in time for last weekend’s Fossil Days celebration. In 1972, Bill and Deloris Jones traveled to South America to visit a friend, Dr. Simmons. While there, the group took an accidental trip to Punt Arenas, Chile, and when they arrived, they found a monument of a sheepherder with his horse and sheep. That image was the inspiration for the monument that now stands at the north end of Hagerman. While the Sheepherder Monument is a historical reminder of the kind of men and women who made Idaho what it is today, it is also symbol of hard work and resilience that continues to make Idaho great. If you would like to know more about this monument, the artist who made it, and people who made it possible, contact the Hagerman Valley Historical Society.

November Elections

This year’s general election date is November 7th. Being an off-year, this election is mainly about city officials. However, there will be a few other items on the ballots that you will want to know about. In the City of Gooding there two related ballot items: One, an advisory vote asking the city council to consent to inclusion of the City within the Gooding Fire District, and a levy override request from Gooding Fire District. While they seem to operate as one organization, the Gooding Fire Department and the Rural Fire District are in fact separate entities. The Fire District is a taxing district in Gooding County and the Fire Department is part of the City of Gooding. In the ongoing effort to maintain and upgrade equipment, it has become impossible for the existing 80-year-old firehouse to house newer trucks. Even some older trucks are too tall to fit through the doors resulting in having to park several trucks outside, and during the winter months, these trucks must be winterized making them unavailable for fire fighting. The proposal is to combine the two entities into one Gooding Fire District. This requires the consent of the city council, and a new property tax levy. The two budgets will then be combined resulting in a slightly larger single budget, but the overall tax burden should change very little. If approved, the new fire district would be able to build a new building for their trucks, a classroom for the district’s volunteers, and training center for firefighters around the area. In Hagerman and Bliss, the Hagerman Cemetery District is asking for a levy increase in the amount of $45,000 to begin October 1, 2018. The Hagerman Cemetery District maintains four cemeteries: two active sites (the Hagerman Cemetery and Upper Clover Creek Cemetery north of Bliss) and two inactive sites (the Pioneer Cemetery north of Hagerman and the Lower Clover Creek Cemetery).
