Write-in Campaigns for General Election This the year for write-in campaigns in Lincoln and Camas counties. Write-in candidates usually have a hard time winning elections, but the circumstances of two commissioner races are unusual. In the Primary Election, Janet Croner (the current commissioner for Camas County’s District 2) lost the Republican nomination for that position (135 to 165) to Ron Chapman. With the close results and less than half of the registered voters (43%) turning out for the Primary, Mrs. Croner has mounted a write-in campaign in order to give unaffiliated voters in Camas County the opportunity to affect the outcome. Mr. Chapman’s name will be on the ballot, but those wanting to vote for Mrs. Croner will have to write-in her name. The District 2 Commissioner in Lincoln County, Marsha Hiatt, decided not to run for re-election earlier this year. The timing of that decision, however, was such that no one filed for the primary election, meaning there will be no names on the general election ballot for that position. Three write-in candidates have since filed for the L.C. District 2 Commissioner race - Rebecca Wood, Robert Newey, and Jessica Scott (photos). Rebecca Wood recently opened up a new business in Richfield - Off the Grid and is concerned about economic development in the Richfield area. 15 miles might not seem like that far, but when everyone drives into Shoshone for gas, it is a drain

on the community as well as a safety hazard when those travelers are young drivers. Robert Newey (who just had a new baby girl) works at Intermountain Financial Services in Shoshone. Many of our young people go away to college and while many of them would like to live in our small communities, there few opportunities to make a living. Mr. Newey wants to make sure everyone has the opportunity to live and work in Lincoln County. Jessica Scott, the fourth grade teacher at the Richfield School District, wants to make sure the county is fiscally responsible and that tax dollars are being put to their best use. She also believes that people at every level of government need to be involved in making our public education system the best it can be. All three of these candidates agree that the future of Lincoln County is in the hand of our young people, but only if they have local job opportunities. Next week we will cover the other two commissioner races: Lincoln County’s District 1 race between Cresley McConnell and Keo Kelly; and Gooding County’s Second District race between David Maestas and Mark Bolduc.
