Devil’s Corral: Past, Present & Future

Next Thursday, the Hagerman Valley Historical Society will host a special presentation at the Hagerman Senior Citizen Center on one of Idaho’s unique treasures - Devil’s Corral. Devil’s Corral is a geological area located on the north rim of the Snake River Canyon upstream from Shoshone Falls. It was created from lava flows and then carved by the Bonneville Flood. It was home to Native Americans who documented their presence with pictographs in cave dwellings. Its more recent history includes parts of the Oregon Trail, Chinese Miners, and interesting homesteading stories. The area is mostly public BLM land, but the scenic heart of this area contains 200 acres of undeveloped private land. Will this private land become another subdivision, or could it be preserved as a park and open space? Karl Ruprecht, president of Friends of Devil’s Corral, will discuss this areas colorful past as well as its possibilities for the future. Karl Ruprecht is the president of Friends of Devil’s Corral, a local group dedicated to preserving Devil’s Corral as a public open space. He spent much of his youth climbing, canoeing, and exploring in the Snake River Canyon and has a deep appreciation for the beauty of this area. Karl lives in Twin Falls and works as a physical therapist. He is married to his wife Jennifer and has two teenage sons. The Devil’s Corral presentation will be held Thursday, February 6, at 7:00 p.m.
