County Governments Start New Year

Join the City of Fairfield at 6:30 p.m. for an evening of Skating Fun!

Monday of this week was the official swearing-in of most newly elected county officials. In Camas County, Chairman of the County Board, Janet Croner, administered the oath of office to Ken Backstrom (re-elected) and Barbara McMurdo (new). While the outgoing commissioner, Bill Davis, officially ending his term of office, a more festive sendoff has been delayed until next month to let Mr. Davis recover Mr. Backstrom, Mrs. McMurdo, and from some recent surgery. Sheriff Sanders take their Oaths of Office. In Lincoln County, Cresley McConnell stepped into the shoes of Charles Ritter to represent Lincoln County residents in and around Shoshone, Richfield, and Dietrich. In Gooding County, Wayne Chandler was sworn-in to fill the position held by Terrell Williams for the last six years. The job of county commissioner, while sometimes tedious and thankless, is important. Their main task is similar to Congress determining how your tax money should be spent. There are many services that the county provides - from maintenance of various buildings to emergency services Mrs. Edwards and Mr. Chandler and the commissioners have to take their seats in Gooding County. decide how to divide limited funds between those departments. The county commissioners also administer pass-through funds from other agencies and authorize county agreements with federal and state organizations. To do all of this, the county commissioners rely on reports from department heads and other individuals, and they often discuss the local impact of things going on at the national level.
