Rain, Rain Go Away

Thissummer’s been pretty rubbish when it comes to the weather, hasn’t it? The odd sunny day, then apart from that rain, rain, and more rain. I can only offer my sympathy to all the couples who planned to wed outside back in July and August, with their dreams thwarted by yet another downpour. That’s why it’s important when choosing where to marry to take into account all options, with my Huddersfield (p15) and hotel venues (p21) suggestions able to cater for your day both inside and out.

EDITORIAL

Editor Claire Muffett-Reece | 01376 535 611 claire.muffett-reece@county.wedding

AFTER Appy Ever

A match on an app led to everlasting love for Sarah and Oli

Images courtesy of Tom Benson Photography

Sarah met Oli through the dating app, Bumble. “I messaged asking if I’d met Oli before – a genuine question as I really thought I had!” says Sarah. “He replied quickly, then we went on our first date 10 days later. Fast forward another two weeks, and I found myself sitting in a quaint Yorkshire pub meeting Oli’s parents!”

Oli proposed during a trip away to Bamburgh. “Before we left, I was searching for the toothpaste and realised Oli had already packed it,” continues the bride. “I went in his washbag to get it out, and was met with a stern look and a few choice words telling me not to go through his things – which was strange and totally out of character for him! The drive there was quiet, and I thought I might have upset him, but when we arrived Oli was keen to take the warm Champagne we’d packed on a beach walk with us. Looking back, the signs where there, but I wasn’t listening to them at all! Eventually, Oli suggested we sit on some rocks looking at the view across the sea, before asking me to stand up and look at the water for a picture. When I turned back round, there he was down on one knee. I of course said, ‘Yes!’.”

The couple set the date of 31 May 2023, choosing Skipbridge Country Weddings as their venue. Here, Sarah tells us more about their big day…

27 REAL WEDDINGS

We fell in love with Skipbridge Country Weddings straight away! From its outside dance floor, to the grand tipi with open fires and Chesterfield sofas, it gave off a relaxed, festival vibe that was different to the norm.

My four-yearold nephew, Jenson, was our ring bearer. However, we decided not to give him the real rings, as panic would entail if he ran off in a different direction – so we gave him Minnie and Mickey Mouse rings in his box!

The day before we married I was worried there’d be a lack of height for our centre pieces; so I sent Oli off to source gypsophila to match the buttonholes and bouquets, which we placed in vases recycled from my sister’s wedding.

I had a locket tied around my bouquet which was gifted to me by my late grandma. When I used to visit, I insisted on looking at the pictures inside; a photo of my late grandparents on their wedding day and a picture of my mum and her brother when they were young.

We decided on dried flowers in keeping with the rustic style of the venue, choosing eucalyptus and preserved roses, which are guaranteed for three to five years.

We had giant garden games including croquette, Jenga and Connect Four to entertain friends and family. It was a great way to break up the formalities and give everyone a chance to chat in a fun way.

To keep the children – and some adults!

– amused we also had a bubble machine, which looked amazing as they caught the sunlight and drifted off around the venue.

Thinking it might rain, I bought umbrellas, blankets and even personalised Mrs Clark wellies! When I then realised how hot it would be, I had a mad dash buying handheld fans and flip-flops for those who wanted to carry on dancing – even if their shoes wouldn’t allow them to!

My dress was from Wed2B, choosing the Jonah design; a draped bodice combined with off-the-shoulder straps and fitted skirt, finished with thousands of iridescent sequins and beads.

Oli and his best man wore sage green three-piece suits with a white shirt and dark green tie; while the rest of the groomsmen were free to choose their own style. We also bought matching ties and pocket squares for the groomsmen to complement the overall look.

I didn’t know what my bridesmaids were wearing until the morning of the wedding! They live in Harrogate and Surrey, so it would have been difficult to arrange a day to go shopping, and I also wanted dresses they’d wear again. I gave them our colour palette and let them choose their own!

29 REAL WEDDINGS
Sticking with our rustic theme, I made the name cards myself. I sourced wooden slices as the base, using stamps and ink for everyone’s name and their role in the wedding.

Andy, the best man, did an amazing speech, even visiting the venue to make sure he could use a projector and screen. He created a PowerPoint of different photos of him and Oli, and also wrote a poem about their friendship.

Andy also played a prank. He gave out keys at the start of the day to a few people, simply saying they’d know what to do when asked. During his speech, he then asked guests to return their keys to Oli’s house now he was married; and they all came up and sheepishly put them in the bucket!

When we were lining up for the confetti shot, Oli turned to me and said he was having an out-of-body experience as this was our wedding; our confetti shot. We had to keep pinching ourselves and reminding ourselves that this was our day!

Our photographer, Tom, was fantastic. Guests commented how friendly and approachable he was, and that they didn’t feel like they had a camera in their face, feeling totally at ease having their picture taken.

DELIGHT

Craig’s Turkish proposal to Rebecca was nothing short of perfect Images courtesy of The Kensington Photographer

Rebecca

met Craig on a dating app. “We had our first date at a coffee shop and instantly clicked, chatting for ages nursing our now-freezing cold drinks,” says Rebecca. “We were talking for so long that we didn’t realise the shop had closed an hour earlier – and the staff were too polite to tell us to leave!”

Craig originally ordered Rebecca’s engagement ring at the end of February 2020, with the plan to propose in front of friends and family in Reading, where they’d first met. “Covid had other ideas, with government restrictions delaying production of the ring and stopping large gatherings,” continues the bride. “Instead, he popped the question on holiday in Turkey, where we’d hired a villa with family for two weeks. On the day, he taught his twin brother how to use his camera, instructing him to hide around a corner and get ready for ‘the moment’. Then, just as the sun started to set, our families slowly disappeared into the villa; hiding on the balcony to watch. Craig led me to the side of the pool and got down on one knee, asking, ‘Will you let me annoy you for the rest of our lives?’. Obviously, I said yes!”

The couple set the date for 8 April 2023, choosing The Oakwood at Ryther for their big day. Here, Rebecca tells us more about their wedding…

ROOM TO MANOEUVRE

The couple first visited The Oakwood at Ryther in April 2021 and were instantly drawn to how much space the venue has. “We loved the exposed beams in the ceremony area, the size of the reception barn along with its mezzanine level, and the amount of light it had,” says Rebecca. “The venue was decorated to an extent when we visited, but it was clear that it didn’t need much as it was so beautiful already. All in all, we loved the simplicity and elegance of the space that also allowed us to put our own twist on it.”

Another huge bonus came in the form of the venue’s on-site accommodation. “This meant that close family and friends were able to stay the night before, as well as on the day of the wedding,” continues the bride. “We had a lovely little celebration on the first night, hiring a pizza van to cater for us all. It was such a nice way to build up to the wedding weekend, and also meant that different members of the party got to know each other beforehand.”

IT’S ALL IN THE DETAILS

Rebecca and Craig wanted their wedding to reflect them both, so Craig chose a London Underground-themed table plan to represent his East London roots. “We recreated the tube map, with each table named after a different line, but with a hint of the eucalyptus print on our wedding stationary, tying everything together,” says Rebecca. “We used menus as place settings, folded into the napkins to show the name at the top. Decorated with the same motifs that were on our save the dates, invites, and all signage at the wedding; they featured a blend of eucalyptus leaves and white and blush roses.”

When it came to the actual flowers, the couple decided on all silk. “This was more friendly for the environment, my allergies – and our bank account!” laughs the bride. “Our florist, Anne, understood our vision of a rustic theme, and made sure that none of the arrangements were too polished or perfect. She added green foliage to complement our colour scheme, and recommended a mix of cream, blush and purple flowers. She

33 REAL WEDDINGS

also put together a beautiful wisteria arch which was placed behind the top table, as well as flower garlands across the mezzanine level. She also organised small chair decorations for the ceremony barn, along with flower arrangements for either end of the aisle.”

COME DINE WITH ME

Food was a huge part of the couple’s day. “We started with canapés of roast beef-filled mini Yorkshire puddings, rosemary and olive goat’s cheese scones, and belly of pork with black pudding purée,” says Rebecca. “For our wedding breakfast, friends and family enjoyed starters of Iberico chorizo, Whitby scallop and pork belly served with apple and chorizo cannelloni; wild Yorkshire mushrooms on balsamic sourdough toast; or chicken liver parfait with red onion marmalade and sourdough crisps. The main course was either hog roast served with Yorkshire puddings, chive-crushed potatoes, tender stem broccoli, carrots, stuffing, and ‘proper’ gravy; sea bass with pearl barley and mussel risotto, parsley purée, sea vegetables and chestnut mushrooms; or roast butternut squash filo parcel with pimento sauce, chive-crushed new potatoes, tender stem broccoli and carrots. This was all followed by Greek lemon cake with ice cream, or frozen apple parfait with apple sorbet, fresh apple, caramel, fennel meringue and sherbet.”

For their wedding cake, Rebecca and Craig opted for a design made of cheese. “Created by Love Cheese of York, it featured six cheese wheels over five layers,” remembers the bride. “We decorated it with small flower garlands put together by our florist, placing it on a personalised laser cut cake board and finishing with a wooden topper. After we cut the cake, our caterers laid it out on the top table for our evening spread, along with crackers and chutneys from Wilkin & Sons.”

WEAR IT WELL

Rebecca found her dream dress in Essex, where the couple now live. “I wore the Champagne Arabella design from Abigail’s Collection in Colchester,” she says. “My mum and maid of honour picked out the dress originally, but when I saw it on the hanger I initially dismissed it. However, I’m so pleased they persuaded me to try it on! The ballgown fit was very flattering for my shape, and also made me feel beautiful and ‘bridal’. The dress had a stunning glittery underlayer that shimmered as I walked, with the lace keeping it classic and traditional. I also loved how the buttons ran all the way down the back, from the top to the very end of the train.”

Craig, his groomsmen and both dads, meanwhile, headed to Slater Menswear to pick out their suits. “We wanted the men to wear a tweed-style design, as we felt it worked well with our venue as well as being in keeping with a Yorkshire wedding,” says Rebecca. “Choosing light sage green suits with burgundy ties, Craig opted for a paisley tie to separate himself from the rest of the party.”

Then there were the bridesmaids, choosing satin burgundy floor-length gowns from David’s Bridal. “Their dresses were A-line, with a plunge neckline, low back and flutter sleeves. I also had a modesty panel sewn into my stepdaughter’s dress, as she’s only 13 and this made her feel more comfortable.”

LET’S DANCE!

Entertainment-wise, Rebecca and Craig opted for a live band. “We chose Nic & The Wildhearts, booking them as a duo to perform for the reception drinks, then as a five-piece band for three sessions throughout the evening,” says Rebecca. “Nic was unfortunately unwell on the day of our wedding and couldn’t perform – but our guests were none the wiser, as she arranged

a replacement singer who was incredible. Nic also stayed in touch with our in-house wedding planner and my maid of honour throughout the day, so that neither Craig nor I had to worry about a thing.”

Also on hand to amuse the guests was a booth from Limelight Photobooth Hire. “There were loads of great props for the guests to use, including a horse head mask which was a firm favourite!” continues the bride. “Guests got two copies of the photos, one to stick in the guest book with a message, and one to keep. Then, to fill the time between the end of the meal and the band setting up, Craig’s younger brother hosted a round of Mr and Mrs – with a bride and groom rubber duck on a stick as the Mr and Mrs! He did a great job making everyone laugh, with questions like, ‘Who’s the better driver?’, ‘Who does the cat love more?’, and ‘Who’s the messiest?’ – with us obviously disagreeing with most of our answers!”

Wedded bliss

Natalie met Jonathan more than 10 years ago when working together on a construction project in Hull. “I actually used to work in internal audit for the company, and realised only after meeting Jonathan face-to-face that I’d picked him out of a bunch of co-workers to audit on a previous job,” says Natalie. “Needless to say, he passed with flying colours! After getting to know one another we learnt we shared common grounds and interests; quickly realising we’d found something special.”

Jonathan popped the question on Christmas Day 2018. “By now we’d lived together for just over three years,” continues the bride. “There was no meaning behind the date chosen, other than it just felt right for Jonathan at that point in time. He also kept the proposal to himself, as he thought it was more intimate and special that way.”

The couple set the date of 4 February 2023, choosing Carlton Towers as their venue. Here, Natalie tells us more about their big day…

39 REAL WEDDINGS

Carlton Towers is a special venue for us both, as we often spend Valentine’s Day there. We picked the first Saturday in February as our wedding date, giving guests the chance to get over the Christmas hype – plus it also fell on the day before my birthday!

We went for gold twig wishing trees for centrepieces to tie-in with the gold gothic décor at Carlton Towers. It fitted in very well for our winter wedding. We decided on sweet cones for the favours in a white and gold theme, so each and everyone attending could enjoy them.

Both of my parents are no longer with us, so my gorgeous stepson, Thomas, gave me away. He’s only 21 and was so nervous, which helped ease my own worries about walking down the aisle.

Jonathan and his groomsmen wore matching Marc Darcy suits, light in colour with navy edging to complement the bridesmaids’ dresses.

A large ornate mirror was chosen for the seating plan to be scribed on. It matched perfectly with the table décor and was very grand in appearance.

40

We had our place names hand crafted, with the hope friends and family would take them as a keepsake. Many guests have since shared how they’ve used them in their own homes.

I wanted a simple bouquet, with more foliage than flowers. My florist produced the most wonderful aesthetic bouquet you could ever imagine, even popping in a hidden blue eryngium for good luck.

The inspiration for our cake was taken from the second Sex and the City movie. Its floating illusion with crystal décor and simplicity was incredible!

I found my Elysee Bridal gown after searching for what seemed like a lifetime for the perfect dress! Opting for simplicity, it featured sheer satin fabric over decadent lace. I teamed it with a long gold veil and ivory heels with a gold butterfly.

My bridesmaids wore deep navy floor-length gowns with long lace sleeves and an open back, with the colour working perfectly alongside my ivory wedding dress and gold venue décor.

Our daughter, Erin, was only five months old when we married. She wore a stunning ivory dress with ruffles and navy bow, and was the most gorgeous flower girl you’ve ever seen.

41 REAL WEDDINGS

Our other daughter held a sign as she walked into the ceremony room that read, ‘Daddy, it’s time to give Mummy our last name’. It was a special and poignant moment for Jonathan.

Enjoy every second of your special day – it goes so quickly! One of my biggest regrets is not having a videographer to capture the moments we couldn’t be there to see.

Vicky from Ales and Cocktails offers premixed cocktails for our couples’

post-wedding celebrations, which we also wanted to promote. So, we put our heads together and came up with a fun and creative way to capture the garden for ceremonies, plus the pool and cocktails the following day. It was a great day collaborating with talented local suppliers who all have a love for weddings. Sipping cocktails by the pool, sharing ideas, and chatting all things wedding is also not a bad day at the office!”

All our jewellery is designed and handmade at our Wetherby workshop, too. Each wedding ring is created to order and is unique to you as a couple. The rings even contain a piece of river gold we’ve panned, and couples also get to choose where they would like their gold to come from.”

JULIA EASTWOOD

“I run a small independent business creating handmade wedding stationery,” says Julia. “Founded in 2012, I’ve grown from a kitchen table business to winning awards, priding myself on my high quality finish. I produce all the stationery a couple need on their wedding day, including save the dates, invitations, order of service, menus – anything you want, I can provide. I’m a ‘one man band’, so everything from the original illustrations and email enquiries, to design, printing, hand-finishing and packaging is handled by myself. From time to time my wonderful dad comes in to help with the printing press – and has also been known to tie the odd bow!”

VALERIE MILLINERY COLLECTIONS

“I make bespoke headwear and hire collections: think hats, fascinators, headbands and bridal pieces,” says Valerie Wyvill. “Located in Knaresborough, I ensure all clients feel the best version of themselves on their special day. People are not accustomed to wearing hats, so sometimes need some guidance to ensure they feel comfortable and confident in wearing a piece. The first stage is a no-obligation consultation where you will try on a multitude of hats to see which one suits your outfit, style and personality. Next, I’ll begin to create your hat and will update you and send photos along the way. You are then invited back for another fit, so I can ensure a perfect result and that you are happy with how your piece looks and feels.”

ORANGE YOU GLAD YOU TRIED IT?

I won’t lie, when Huda Beauty’s new #FauxFilter Colour Correctors Correct & Brighten turned up in the office, their orangey hues made me think the brand’s boffins had lost the plot! How wrong was I? These little wonders harness the power of colour theory by using opposing colours to neutralise unwanted discolouration. The peachy tones cancel out darkness and pigmentation to create even skin, which explains why this is the best product I’ve ever used for concealing my dark under-eye circles. Never again will I question Huda Beauty! £26, https://hudabeauty.com

WOODEN HEART

Luxury British skincare brand Ashmira Botanica is formulated with high quality natural ingredients packed with natural plant extracts, essential oils, and clays, is completely vegan, and formulated in small batches to minimise its ecological footprint.

Inspired by Chinese medicine, the core concept is derived from the ancient philosophy of the five elements: wood, fire, earth, metal and water. The holistic, natural treatments can be personalised based on your biorhythm (year of birth), current skincare issues, and/or emotions, as well as being tuned to the season and time of year.

I recently met the brand’s founder Tracey at a wedding show and discovered that my element is wood, she then proceeded to describe me to a tee based on this, which was eerily fascinating! Head over to the website, https://ashmirabotanica.com, to discover your own element and check out the box sets. The Ashmira Botanica Wood Gift Set, £45, includes a 25g pot of Elemental Clay Powder, 5ml Elemental Elixir, 15ml Rice Balm Face Cream and 100ml Organic Rose Hydrosol.

ENHANCE THAT FLUTTER

Designed to build longer-looking natural lashes in just a few weeks with a superprecise applicator, Babe Essential Lash Serum boasts an ultra-nourishing formula including biotin and amino acids to boost your lash line and lash retention over time.

It’s your evening routine essential, and is even safe to use while wearing extensions and strip lashes. Stand by for eyelash envy! £80, www.beautybay.com

Q&A Beauty

Our two experts answer your wedding hair and beauty dilemmas

NATURAL WOMAN

I’ve had three trials with make-up artists who didn’t listen to the fact I don’t normally wear a lot. It was far too much – what should I do?

When it comes to booking a make-up artist, conduct thorough research. Look for portfolios that showcase images aligning with the style you desire. What one person considers ‘natural’ might differ from another, so finding an artist who shares your vision is important. Bringing your make-up bag to the trial is also useful, showing the artist the products you use and when you typically wear them. Above all, honesty is crucial, so don’t pretend to like something if you don’t. Make-up artists want you to be happy and feel your best. While they’ll offer expert advice, remember the trial is a collaboration between the pair of you. Communicate openly at the start, middle and end, to ensure your desired look is achieved.

LOSING IT

I suffer from alopecia, and wedding stress is causing a lot of hair to fall out. What should I do?

Firstly, relax, if this is your hair and how you’re going to look at your wedding then that’s beautiful, and more importantly it’s you. Ensure your scalp is in the best condition by doing weekly exfoliations and scalp treatments – your local specialist will be able to advise on these. I’d recommend some detailed headwear to finish your natural look; perhaps a wide headband which will be the most comfortable over your scalp or finer hair – or even some soft glitter or scalp gems to create a shimmer.

However, if you’d feel more comfortable to have your head more covered on your big day there are several options. Contact a wig specialist for a full scalp coverage, or an extension specialist to add to your natural hair; both of which could then be styled in your chosen way. At the end of the day, you’ve got to do what’s right for you – it’s your special day so it’s really important you feel confident and comfortable.

A LUXURY RETREAT

Nestled on the north coast of the island in Anse la Raie (a popular kite surfing spot) sits the five-star, eco-committed boutique hotel Paradise Cove. With Mauritius fast becoming a sustainable island, Paradise Cove’s effort to go green includes being part of the Positive Impact Movement (created by the Attitude hotel group) ensuring local sourcing and no single-use plastic.

ROOM WITH A VIEW

I was excited to visit this adults-only tropical paradise, an acclaimed Small Luxury Hotels of the World, having benefitted from a renovation in 2019. It offers a warm welcome with 75 rooms and suites including the Deluxe Premium Rooms, one of which was to become my home for three blissful nights. This honeymoon hideout has been authentically designed in the island’s signature style with wood, rattan and tropical palm-print wallpaper and furnishings.

The rooms have been positioned to admire the panoramic cove views, along with the cluster of other areas that make up this glamorous getaway. Centred around the main reception built under a charming thatch roof is the stylish STAY bar; the complimentary tea bar boasting locally grown flavours; the main swimming pool where I enjoyed an early morning dip each day and The Dining Room restaurant where the delicious buffet breakfast was brimming with exotic flavours.

FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD

There’s so much choice between the four restaurants at this dreamy destination with a Dine-Around experience available in three of them for half-board and all-inclusive guests. For delicious sushi, the à la carte Japanese XO restaurant won’t disappoint while if it’s seafood you’re after, try the Cove Restaurant’s private kiosks on the sand for catch of the day.

I was in for a treat at the trendy Peninsular Restaurant and bar perched

overlooking the jetty and lagoon with far-flung views stretching across to the five north islands in one direction, and the new infinity pool (that’s heated during the winter months) in the other. A highlight was an invite to the launch of the new five-course vegan fine dining experience by Michelin-starred Chef Alexis Gauthier. I tucked into a fondant heart of palm made with pressed watermelon followed by a semi-confit cut of giraumon with a medley of grains and wild rice. The lychee wine is a must-try while you’re on the island, it became my favourite tipple of the trip!

RIDING THE OCEAN WAVES

I was lucky enough to hop on board the hotel’s 12-seat catamaran for a full-day cruise around Îlot Gabriel and Île Plate (also known as the Flat Island). After settling in for a suntan, and a delicious barbecue lunch, the boat reached Coin de Mire where it was time to grab my swimmers and jump into the warm Indian Ocean to snorkel (dive enthusiasts can scuba dive here).

Looking to make a memory on a once-in-a-lifetime honeymoon? Then book a sunset cruise or the Stargazing experience with an astrologer out on the jetty which is just one of the many You&Me Moments the resort offers.

Back on land, activities include yoga, Tai Chi, a gym plus two floodlit tennis courts. One of my favourite pastimes was relaxing in the cute love nests dotted around the grounds, promising privacy for honeymooners.

ISLAND ESCAPE

The wellness journey starts the moment you enter the lush open-air spa where

the tempting treatments are known as Beauty Rituals of the World of the organic French brand Cinq Mondes. I indulged in a 50-minute full body massage with therapist Samantha who used a scented pure coconut oil made on the island. Dreaming of a couple’s massage in one of the love nests at the water’s edge? Consider it done!

WITH LOVE FROM MAURITIUS

Step back in time at the historic Château De Labourdonnais, a twostorey, colonial-style Creole mansion and heritage site which was once a sugar plantation. This local landmark boasts French-style furnishings plus an orchard in the grounds that contributes to the fruit production on the island. There’s a rum distillery, plus you’ll be spoilt by the menu choice at La Table du Château, (https://domainedelabourdonnais.com).

No trip to Mauritius is complete without a visit to the vibrant capital city of Port Louis with its street markets and bustling scenes - it was a fun way to fill my Insta feed at every turn!

Couples can get married at Paradise Cove – the Classic Wedding Package includes locally grown flowers, no single-use plastic and locally sourced ingredients for the dinner – a romantic Renewal of Vows is also an option. Stay at five-star Paradise Cove boutique hotel from £334 per room each night, based on two people sharing a Deluxe Premium Room on a half-board basis, www.paradisecovehotel.com/en www.instagram.com/paradisecovehotel www.facebook.com/ParadiseCoveHotel

A WARM WELCOME

I was invited to stay at the newly opened adults-only Sunrise Attitude, a four-star hotel committed to tourism with a positive impact with 153 rooms commanding prime position on the east coast. It’s opposite the powder-white sandy beach at Belle Mare boasting picture-perfect views of the clear lagoon which I couldn’t wait to swim in. Beach volley is a pastime here, along with sundowners on the shore - the local Phoenix Beer is a must-try!

Stand-out features include eight villas with plunge pools where you can wake up to room service. The 28 swimup rooms are another fab offering for honeymooners, linking each terrace to the main Papaya Pool and swim-up bar, plus there’s also Bar 31 boasting a stunning view of the beach and pool.

As with all eight Attitude properties, Sunrise Attitude has been designed in keeping with the local surroundings, marrying earthy tones with on-trend, hand-crafted furnishings created by local artisans using locally sourced materials including raffia. In their bid to eliminate single-use plastic, this eco resort provides you with a reusable water bottle and tea and coffee are collected from reusable glass jars at the Bulk Shop - don’t miss sampling the local passionfruit, mango and vanilla tea!

DINE IN STYLE

I had high expectations for an authentic tapas-style dinner at the brand’s signature Kot Nou restaurant (present at all Attitude hotels) and I wasn’t disappointed – you can take a cookery class here to learn the local recipes.

Similar to Paradise Cove, the DineAround option allows you to pick between three restaurants on a halfboard basis where you’ll be spoilt for choice! The Market restaurant specialises in local and international delicacies using the freshest seasonal and sustainable ingredients – I tucked into vegan pancakes for breakfast.

The Social House restaurant and bar is an informal setting playing live music during the evening where I shared tasty vegan platters, and my favourite spot for lunch had to be Taba-j, the brightly painted kiosk serving traditional takeout street food. I couldn’t get enough of the local roti washed down with alouda (a Mauritian milkshake). Experience one of your first meals as newlyweds with an invite to a local team member’s home for an Otentik dinner. My host was Concita Fortuno, who welcomed me for a wonderful evening of food, music and dance – she even taught me how to cook gateaux piment (chilli bites!)

EARLY TO RISE

I couldn’t wait to experience the Secret Sunrise guided meditation to music on the beach – even if it did mean getting up earlier than normal! Chilling out wearing headphones, it was an experience I’ll never forget. It’s free and takes place twice a week and a private 20-minute session can be arranged, with large groups invited to experience the interactive dance session.

LET THE MAGIC HAPPEN

I indulged in treatments at the new Spa POZ (meaning to relax and take a break). Dotted within this tranquil leafy space are single and double open-air creole treatment huts, a salt hammam (that helps to soothe skin problems) and a beauty salon. The vegan spa products packaged in reusable tins are handmade on the island using local plants with 5% of each purchase at Spa POZ (and from the Otentik Bazaars selling souvenirs) donated to

WISH YOU WERE HERE

Why not split your stay between the three and four-star Attitude hotels that cater for most budgets in adults-only and family-friendly properties? Coin de Mire Attitude offers great value for money (https://hotels-attitude. com/en/ coin-de-mire-attitude) while Lagoon Attitude boasts 182 rooms including ten romantic whirlpool suites (https://hotels-attitude.com/ en/lagoon-attitude). It’s home to the Marine Discovery Centre, dedicated to the preservation of the marine ecosystem from where I set sail on a glass-bottom boat for a snorkelling trail to marvel at the underwater world. If you’re lucky, you might spot some whales from the boat ride too!

I was fortunate to visit Tropical Attitude with its 58 sea-facing rooms and 11 villas with private pools where a floating breakfast can be served (https://hotels-attitude.com/en/ tropical-attitude). A complimentary boat trip departs twice daily from here to the untouched Ile aux Cerfs where I sunbathed on the pure white sand.

If you’re searching for a fun-filled family-moon then head to Zilwa Attitude (https://hotels-attitude.com/ en/zilwa-attitude) which faces the northern islands. I couldn’t wait to take the raft over to Gran Zil for a beach barbecue lunch and chill out in an over-water hammock - I didn’t want to leave. Weddings take place here, with exclusive use of the island booked creating memories made in Mauritius.

ROMANCE Rural

Olivia Gibson discovers the delights of Provence at Hôtel Crillon le Brave

Known for its diverse landscapes, picturesque views, iconic lavender fields, vineyards and Mediterranean coastline, Provence is the ultimate honeymoon destination that oozes romance at every turn. When the opportunity arose to visit Maisons Pariente’s Hotel Crillon le Brave, I packed my bags and headed to the airport alongside my partner for a magical stay at the sought-after property.

After a short flight and transfers to the five-star destination, we were welcomed by the oh-so-accommodating staff, who gave us a personal tour of the hotel. The charming spaces captured our hearts from the moment we arrived – it was like something out of a movie! The architecture made from blond Crillon stone is perched at the top of the village, boasting captivating views of Mont-Ventoux and the surrounding rolling countryside. Every corner of the private setting offered a stunning backdrop to escape the outside world and disconnect for a while.

BREAKFAST IS SERVED

While strolling through the labyrinth of 17th- and 18th-century buildings, hand-in-hand, we had to take a step back to bask in the gentle breeze, chirping birds and the occasional church bells. Together it created the ideal atmosphere to relax while enjoying a delicious Provençal buffet for breakfast on the panoramic terrace. What better way to start the morning than by eating delicious food while enjoying such breathtaking and wide-ranging views? We tucked into homemade pastries, fresh fruit and granola on our first morning before enjoying a cooked breakfast with freshly baked breads on our second day ‒ the Nyons olive bread is a must try!

PAMPERING PLANS

The Spa des Écuries is the perfect location to relax with various beauty,

body and facial treatments. Located in an ancient 18th-century stonevaulted stable with three treatment rooms, one of which is a double room, the team has paid close attention to the spa with cosy features and charming touches to create a calming atmosphere. After being greeted by the beauty therapist, I was whisked away to a room for an expertly executed massage. During my hour-long treatment, the masseuse went to town tackling my problem areas using traditional massage techniques to help me relax, reduce muscle tension throughout my body, and promote blood circulation. I felt all my worries melt away, as well as my knots. An aroma of essential oils filled the dark-lit room and I almost drifted off! The intimate setting combines gentle and effective approaches to enhancing overall wellbeing – I felt fully disconnected from the outside world, bliss!

REST AND RELAX

With 17 bedrooms and 17 suites, the hotel offers a stunning range of spaces for all celebrations. Our beautiful suite was complete with a spacious bedroom, lounge area and bathroom with all the amenities needed. The interior was something out of a storybook with a charming style, plush furnishing, neutral materials, an ornate fireplace and a green colour scheme. The red floor tiles are typical of Provence and can be seen throughout the space, through to the bathroom, which has a freestanding bathtub, double sinks and a spacious shower. The luxurious touches continued to the living room with a flat-screen TV, minibar, tasteful artwork, comfortable sofas and armchairs. With the summer approaching, we were thankful for the adjustable air conditioning too!

Sleeping in the large, king-sized bed was like laying on a fluffy cloud. The large windows overlooking the valley allowed plenty of natural light for a gentle and calming morning wake-up call, leaving us feeling wellrested and rejuvenated.

MAKING A SPLASH

I was desperate to catch some rays after the winter months, and the pool area at Hôtel Crillon le Brave was just what we needed! The heated, turquoise water overlooked the surrounding countryside and provided just enough space to get some morning lengths in. We spent most of our time in the tranquil setting, whether having a dip or enjoying the peaceful atmosphere with a good book. With multiple sun loungers scattered around, guests can easily find the perfect location to sit, whether it’s in the sun or under an umbrella.

For the fitness-fanatics, the on-site fitness room boasts all the equipment needed to break a sweat; I recommend enjoying some morning yoga to start the day off before breakfast.

Alternatively, I would recommend taking part in some friendly competition with a game of Pétanque, a French sport with the objective of getting boules closest to a target. I’m happy to announce that I won most of our games!

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

As a massive foodie, I was excited to try the local cuisine. Hôtel Crillon le Brave has two on-site restaurants offering local produce. Head chef Adrien Brunet has presented new menus with locally sourced delicacies, inviting guests on a gourmet journey through Provence. La Madeleine is a Michelin-starred gastronomic restaurant that offers a spectacular experience on a panoramic terrace with must-see views. Expertly balancing textures and flavours, the team has created a gourmet menu with extraordinary dishes exquisitely presented.

The bistronomic restaurant, La Table du Ventoux, has a relaxed atmosphere, and Adrien has created a classic menu inspired by the best of southern France. We were privileged to dine at the restaurant twice. On the first night, I enjoyed the tempura scampi for starter, with shiso and juice extract, before tucking it into the Ardèche trout with watercress ravioli and lemongrass broth. I finished off the meal with a soft and fluffy Fraisier cake, which melted in my mouth! On our second evening, I opted for the fish bouillabaisse with a delicious sauce and spring vegetables, followed by the lamb Wellington with chlorophyll, nut-brow buttered polenta, and bay leaf. What better way to finish the meal than with a lemon cheesecake finger adorned with gold flakes? Thanks to the attentive staff

and passionate chefs, the service was impeccable on both evenings. My favourite beverage of the trip was the La Douceur de Crillon, a must-try cocktail featuring white peach, apricot from Roussillon, homemade lavender syrup and prosecco – yum! After our meals, we spent time in the bar area, the oldest house in the hotel. Located on the ground floor of the Maison Roche, this gorgeous space provides a cosy setting to relax with a drink in hand, especially with the extensive wine menu! An equally wonderful setting to relax during the day with a game of chess, whilst taking a break from the sun.

THE FINAL VERDICT

After such a memorable experience, I cannot recommend Hôtel Crillon le Brave enough! It’s the ultimate setting for romantic honeymoons, with a rural location, spectacular views, delicious dishes, charming buildings and a tranquil setting. The magical trip will always hold a special place in our hearts, and we have many memories to treasure for years – we will definitely be returning!

Those in-the-know solve your wedding dilemmas

HARPING ON

I want a harpist for our ceremony and while guests are mingling, but my wifeto-be isn’t convinced. Any thoughts? Imagine a wedding without music. Impossible, isn’t it? Music is a vital part of your celebration, and the harp creates a dreamy fairytale atmosphere, transforming your ceremony and adding that extraspecial wow factor. You’ll also be surprised by how many of your guests have never seen or heard a harp before! It’s probably the most romantic musical instrument for your ceremony, drinks or wedding breakfast –or a combination of all three. I suggest for your ceremony you select songs that mean something to you as a couple, to walk down the aisle, to sign the register and for your exit together. Then, for your drinks and meal, the subtle sound of the harp is the perfect accompaniment as you chat to friends and family. Overall, having music played with passion by a harpist could be one of the highlights of your day. I truly hope she says ‘I do’ to having one at your wedding!

ALL PRESENT AND CORRECT

My guests keep asking what we want as gifts – but we’ve no clue. We need ideas!

This is more common than you think –nowadays most people already live together before getting married, so don’t need the traditional plates and toasters. Asking for money has now become a go-to response, and can be included on your invitations with a poem. You can then put the money towards your honeymoon or something you’d both really love, but might be out of budget for just one person to gift. One thing I’d recommend, regardless of whether you live together or not, is to have something personal made from your special day. You could ask for a personalised photo frame, album or name plaque to put up in the house – something that makes you smile every time you look at it.

How do I know which is the right team to choose for wedding glam? I Googled ‘Yorkshire wedding hair and make-up’ and there’s over 19 million results!

First, have a clear idea of what you want – do you need an individual hair stylist, make-up artist, or someone to do both? Where you will be getting ready, what time you need to be ready for, and how many people are in your wedding party, are all other questions to consider. The reason for this is that your glam squad will need to establish whether they’ve the time to get you all ready on the morning of your

RAISE A TOAST

My mum’s adamant we need a toastmaster – what’s their role in our big day?

Firstly, a toastmaster brings the style and presence of that famous red tailcoat, which adds colour to your wedding. They also manage all the stress and anxiety of organising your day – no matter how big or small. This is done by meticulously planning for your exact requirements, ensuring what you want happens when, where and with whoever you wish. They also liaise with other professionals involved in your wedding such as photographers, videographers, musicians, DJs or catering staff – meaning you can relax and enjoy your celebration. Remember that for us there’s no such thing as a silly question – your concerns are our concerns. We will listen and advise every step of the way.

wedding, as well as if they’re prepared to travel to your location. What’s also worth noting is that the most expensive stylists and makeup artists are not always best. Take a look at their work on socials or ask them to send you examples by email. Many offer a trial as part of their package, which should be taken before you book. Be warned that many of Yorkshire’s popular suppliers are already taking bookings for 2024/2025, so do your research and get booked in their diary as quickly as you can.

EVERY LITTLE HELPS

My fiancé and I want our one-year-old twins at our wedding; but don’t want family babysitting. Is there a Yorkshire company to help?

The Yorkshire Nanny Company has checked nannies available to come to you on the morning of your wedding and help get the children ready. They can stay throughout the day and make sure all needs are met, such as meals, sleep, play and exploration, as well as nappy changes. Your family and friends would still be able to see them, but the nanny would be responsible for their care, allowing guests to fully enjoy your day. A nanny can also babysit in the evening, making sure no one misses the reception. Care can be given at the wedding venue, a private home or within a hotel room – and overnight care is also a possibility if required. Whatever your needs, we can provide a tailored approach to fit.

These may include Photographers, Videographers, Musicians and DJ’s or Catering staff. I aim to ensure that you have a most enjoyable event.
