Summer’s here at last, and for many that means tying the knot; glass of bubbles or Pimm’s in hand while enjoying the heat (which, to be fair, we need to take advantage of!). However, what I truly love about Yorkshire is that weddings are stunning regardless of the time of year. Autumn brings with it a red and amber hue, with falling leaves and a crispness to the air; winter offers a taste of magic, thanks to incredible scenery and venues dusted in snow; and spring is yet another amazing time of year to say ‘we do’, with snowdrops and crocuses blanketing the grounds. I know you don’t need convincing, but just in case be sure to turn to our two exclusive shoots that celebrate marrying in the spring (p53), or autumn and winter (p45).

Elsewhere, I’ve plenty more inspo to gear you up for the best day of your lives. Venue-wise, check out where to wed in Sheffield and close by (p15); or embrace the outdoors by committing to one another under a tent or tipi (p21). I’ve also been busy catching up with Yorkshire’s best cake-makers (p57) and venue stylists (p49); as well as chatting to three couples all about their amazing celebrations (p27, 32 and 39). Then there’s all the prizes I have on offer, from a bridal boudoir photoshoot (p9) and Titanic Spa stay (p13), to an incredible four-night trip to Thailand (p97)!

See you in September…

CRUSH Schoolgirl

Laura fell for Oli the minute she saw him in secondary school

Laura

and Oli met at school when they were added to the same Year 7 form group. “After a year of dropping hints that I liked him, my friends highlighted I was clearly being too subtle – so told Oli for me! The following day, he asked me to be his girlfriend; and we’ve been together ever since!”

Oli popped the question while on holiday to Center Parcs. “We drove there after work on the Friday and had a tight timeframe to check in, get ready, and go to the restaurant we’d booked that night,” continues Laura. “After being in the villa for no more than 20 minutes, and Oli trying his hardest to get me to stand still and stop searching for the shower bag; he pulled out a box from his pocket, opened it, and asked me to marry him. At the time I was still mentally working out where I’d packed the shampoo! I said, ‘Are you joking?’ in joyous shock and disbelief. Oli, not quite expecting that response, said, ‘No, I’m clearly not joking’!”

The couple set the date of 4th May, 2023, choosing Sandburn Hall as their venue. Here, Laura tells us more about their big day…

27 REAL WEDDINGS

When visiting one of Sandburn’s open evenings I fell in love with its wooden beams and huge windows. Oli loved it more when we realised 4th May was available, as he’s a huge Star Wars fan!

Oli and I love seeing bands and going to festivals, so I found an album style tableplan on Pinterest. We chose some albums individually and a few together from the gigs we’ve been to.

I wanted our flowers to feel like we’d just picked them from the garden, and made sure white roses were part of the arrangements, My Dad passed away in March 2022, and, as a proud Yorkshireman, the white roses reflected his presence well.

I wore the Essense of Australia D3492 gown, as it was floral and boho in style. I added caped sleeves so the top didn’t feel too bare, and accessorised with a bracelet made from silver and one of my dad’s ties.

Our wedding ‘flower’ cupcakes looked so much like the real thing that we spent the wedding trying to get people to eat them! The lady who made them was outstanding, matching the designs to the flowers and colours perfectly.

Oli and his groomsmen all wore the same navy blue suits, teaming them with lilac ties with a faux flower pin to match my bouquet.

28

My bridesmaids all chose their own dresses, as I didn’t want to make any of them feel they had to wear a dress they hated. I also liked the casual look to them all being different!

Seeing each other for the first time is a feeling you can’t recreate. Both of us were holding back tears – Oli failing at this was definitely a highlight!

We were so lucky with the weather, meaning guests could enjoy drinks and canapés before heading outside to socialise and get some great pictures.

Oli’s best man, dad and Oli himself all entertained our guests with their brilliant speeches. My mum did one, too – but made hers into a quiz!

Having all your family and friends together for the whole day is amazing, and will make your day all the more special.

Our bridesmaids and groomsmen were incredible from start to finish. The bridesmaids kept the dance floor going all evening and a few of the groomsmen cried throughout the ceremony.

Ruth and Will celebrated with friends, family, food – and plenty of fun

Images courtesy of Mark Hooper Photography
32

Ruth and Will met studying at Northampton University. “We lived in adjacent flats and think we first started talking at a party, but neither of us can actually remember for definite the first time we met!” says Ruth. “Will says he was attracted to me because I always make sure people are OK and looked after; whereas Will always makes me feel calm. He also always listens and is very thoughtful – and it doesn’t hurt that he’s a pretty good cook!”

Will proposed to Ruth while out for a walk in a little village called Marton cum Grafton. “We’d been together for around eight years and were just coming out of the strict Covid lockdown measures,” continues Ruth. “Will had unbeknownst to me already paid for my engagement ring, and was waiting for the right moment to pick it up. He wanted to catch me by surprise – and I certainly wasn’t expecting him to pop the question on a muddy dog walk! It was the perfect proposal, and he’d even arranged for us to have a meal in the local pub afterwards to celebrate.”

The couple set the date for the 23 October, 2022, choosing Yorebridge House for their big day. Here, Ruth tells us more about their amazing wedding…

LOCATION, LOCATION

When it came to where to wed, there was no question that the wedding would be in Yorkshire. “We love being outside, so were drawn to being somewhere scenic and beautiful,” says Ruth. “We wanted to have the ceremony and reception in the same place for ease and to avoid travelling on the day, and also wanted somewhere that felt intimate and homely. We knew that Yorebridge House was the venue for us as soon as we walked in. It’s a beautiful hotel and the staff were so friendly. We also loved how we were able to personalise much of our day, too.”

Another selling point for Ruth and Will was the venue’s catering. “We love food and Yorebridge provided amazing cuisine and more,” continues Ruth. “On the day guests were given a choice of rolled duck terrine with Granny Smith apple and celeriac; cured salmon with beetroot and watercress, or salt baked celeriac with king oyster mushroom and truffle to start. This was followed by Wensleydale lamb with fondant potato and creamed cabbage; gilt head sea bream with tomato and olive; or potato gnocchi with butternut squash and salsify. Then, for dessert, friends and family enjoyed custard tart, nutmeg and raspberry sorbet; or dark chocolate brownie with hazelnut and praline ice cream. And it didn’t end there! In the evening the venue prepared a cheeseboard and served it alongside our cupcakes. We love cheese so it was delicious – even if I did get chutney on my dress!”

33 REAL WEDDINGS

PURE & SIMPLE

The couple wanted an intimate wedding, so chose to invite only their closest family and friends. “Because we kept things low-key, we didn’t really have a colour scheme in mind,” says Ruth. “For this reason we didn’t do table names – and we didn’t even have a table plan! Instead, we just let everyone find their seats, with Will’s mum creating the place names as she’s very artistic. It’s a good thing she offered, as Will and I would have just printed the names off a Word document!”

When it came to decorations, the couple were keen to reuse and recycle, saving on costs and the environment. “We collected glass candlesticks from charity shops and car boot sales, and had a mixture of candles in them for centrepieces,” continues the bride. “Our florist, Amy, provided some eucalyptus which we arranged around the candles. As for the actual flowers, I’m not too sure what we had in the end! We sent Amy photos for inspiration and then let her do her thing! It was important that we didn’t have too many, as I’d hate to see them go to waste after. For this reason we used lots of dried flowers, as we wanted them preserved for us to keep. My bouquet is now on our coffee table in the lounge!”

JUST THE TWO OF US

Keeping in with the intimate celebration, Ruth and Will chose not to have bridesmaids or groomsmen. “This also gave me more time to search for a dress that was elegant and timeless,” says Ruth. “In the end I came across the designer Sarah Seven, however, there’s only one boutique in the UK you can try her designs on. So off I went with my mum and sister to London! I ended up with the top of one dress, but changed the skirt. I also thought I wanted a train, but realised it was quite heavy when trying it on and felt it would irritate me on the day. I went dress shopping in May with the wedding in October – and if I could give any bride -to-be some advice it’s to give yourself more time than that!”

Will’s outfit was found much closer to home; in All About The Suit in Darlington. “He chose a three-piece blue checked suit with burnt orange tie,” continues Ruth. “We also bought matching ties for our brothers and dads to wear.”

NIGHT FEVER

When it came to the evening entertainment, Ruth and Will opted for a DJ and saxophonist. “The saxophonist in particular made our evening,” says Ruth. “He played along to the DJ set which was amazing, and it was the moment where everyone came together and really let their hair down. What made the night even better was the fact I’d seen an online video a week before our wedding where a couple used a pair of white sunglasses with their names on for the evening party. We didn’t realise they would be such a hit! Every guest had their time wearing the sunglasses and were beckoned to show off their best dance moves on the dancefloor.”

Emotions certainly ran high for the couple on the day. “It was really surreal,” explains Ruth. “You’ve planned something for so many months and all of a sudden, all your plans come together and it’s right there, happening. I really thought I was going to cry at some point, but I think I was too excited and happy in the end. And I knew that Will was going to be emotional so it would have been a nightmare if we were both inconsolable! We both can’t believe how fast the day went – people warn that you blink and miss it, but you really can! It’s most definitely worth taking a minute to soak it all up.”

REAL WEDDINGS 35

RUTH’S TOP TIP: “Keep it simple, as it will save money and stress. Your guests will remember the venue, the food and the atmosphere.”

BEST FRIENDS

Sadie and Joshua’s friendship soon blossomed in to something more

forever

Images courtesy of Photogenick Photography

Sadie and Joshua met at nursery aged three. “We went to different primary schools, then a few months before starting high school a friend reintroduced us – and we became best friends pretty much straight away!” says Sadie. “It was a gradual process falling for each other, and it was only when we left sixth form that I realised how much I missed seeing Joshua every day – and that being with your best friend is all you could ever wish for.”

Joshua proposed when the couple had been together almost six years. “We were on holiday in New York for Joshua’s birthday,” continues the bride. “We walked to Central Park and Joshua suggested we hire a rowing boat. As we rowed close to Bow Bridge Joshua picked his moment, as there was a saxophonist on the bridge playing Elvis Presley’s Can’t Help Falling in Love. Joshua stood up and got down on one knee with the ring box, and I was so gobsmacked my initial response was much less polite than ‘yes’! I’d secretly searched the house before our holiday and never found a ring – it turns out he’d given it to my best friend the day he bought it, who kept it at her house for four months!”

The couple set the date of 30 April, 2022, marrying at St Katherine’s Church and choosing Unique Occasions at Loversall Farm for their reception. Here, Sadie tells us more about their big day…

39 REAL WEDDINGS
Scan to view video

A friend suggested we view Unique Occasions – and we fell in love with it right away. The marquee was stunning, and the barn perfectly rustic with beams and gorgeous staircase.

For our table plan we opted for a New York theme as a sentiment to our engagement, all named after the City’s landmarks.

I stayed on the farm the night before the wedding with my bridesmaids, so we had a horse and carriage transport us to the church.

I opted for lots of mixed foliage for our wedding flowers, mixed in with some gypsophila, roses and hydrangeas.

Our centrepieces were stunning acrylic plinths with large white foliage arrangements. Even the venue’s owner got emotional saying how lovely it looked.

Our cake was a simple yet stunning three tier bake, with a hidden Mickey Mouse with our initials inside as a nod to our love of Disney! We decided on lemon, chocolate orange and Victoria sponge flavours.

40

We had a cigar bar for guests to help themselves to, which went down a treat! Both our families enjoy a cigar on a special occasion, so it was the perfect touch.

During our welcome drinks we ditched traditional canapés for a cheese table from Smart Occasions, which was a really popular choice.

We lost Joshua’s Grandad the previous Christmas, and he never got to open his Christmas present; a special edition whisky. We had a whisky station set up with his photo for family toast him.

Joshua and his groomsmen wore three piece tuxedos, complete with Hugo Boss velvet bow ties. He also wore a velvet jacket and different coloured tie to stand out.

We also had a dog treat station for guests to take home a bag of treats for their fur babies from our pup, Joey. It was so popular guests kept asking me if I had any more bags!

I wore the Dream gown by Ronald Joyce. It was exactly what I wanted –traditional A-line, it featured lace sleeves and left me feeling covered up enough for a church wedding.

My bridesmaids looked gorgeous in their multiway dark sage dresses from La Closet De Chanel. They’re all different shapes and sizes, so could style them exactly how they felt comfortable.

41 REAL
WEDDINGS

Marrying in April on a farm meant that there was lots of new life around. A new baby lamb was even carried into the marquee after our wedding breakfast – everyone was lining up for a cuddle!

During our evening reception we opted for an Ibiza-style saxophonist and DJ. They both worked amazingly together and entertained our guests all night long!

Magic MOMENTS

This exclusive shoot shows how weddings can be just as spectacular during autumn and winter

We decided to put this shoot together for autumnal/ festive wedding inspiration,” says coordinators Hannah from Hannah Brooke Photography and Laura of Laura Jane Bridal. “With rising costs, many couples are looking to save money by marrying out of the main summer wedding season. We wanted to show how couples can make a festive wedding beautiful and to not let the potentially bad weather put them off a winter wedding. We chose Bunny Hill Weddings for a venue as it has lots of stunning spaces inside and out, meaning we could showcase plenty of different ideas. For our theme, we opted for twinkly lights, elegant and relaxed glamour and all the festive feels.”

SPRING

sensation

Exclusive looks from a talented team of Yorkshire wedding suppliers

This shoot came together for two reasons,” says coordinator Charlotte of Charlotte Elizabeth Photography. “Firstly, we wanted to create some beautiful springtime images and highlight the new outdoor ceremony spaces at Cannon Hall Museum. I contacted some local suppliers that I knew would embrace the spring theme and work well together. The sessions I organise are always relaxed; I let the suppliers know the theme and give them free reign from there!

“The outdoor spaces at Cannon Hall are beautiful. Initially we had plans to capture three different outdoor spaces, but rain meant part of the

session took place inside the ballroom. Everyone adapted quickly and we managed to capture two very different looks with the same colours.

“Cristello Bridal provided two laced wedding dresses and a blue bridesmaid dress, the colour of which matched the chair sashes beautifully. The cake provided by Katrina’s Bespoke Cakes was decorated with delicate sugar flowers which mirrored the soft colours of EVR.Made’s latest collection. Everything was pulled together with Nicola’s neutral bridal hair and make-up, against our beautiful backdrop.”

THE GREAT YORKSHIRE CAKE OFF

After a wedding bake to impress your guests? You’ve come to the right place!

My Little Cakery

“My design style focuses on a wild and whimsical, naturally beautiful look,” says My Little Cakery’s Natalie Crooks. “Mixing lots of textures with florals for a relaxed yet romantic feel; I love pressed edible florals, big bold statement flowers, eye catching colours and organic textures. I also really enjoy pushing boundaries with modern designs that reflect my couples’ personalities.”

www.mylittlecakery.com

Weddings by Tasha’s Cakery

“I create modern, elegant and unique cakes using lots of texture and colour,” says Weddings by Tasha’s Cakery Tasha Johnson. “I love to bring the couple's personality and theme for the day to the cake, while still keeping it classy. I like to work with couples who don’t want just a typical wedding cake – but still yearn for something beautiful. I’m also easy to work with, making the whole process simple as I know how stressful planning a wedding can be.”

Blossom Tree Cake Company

“My background is in fine dining desserts and French patisserie,” says Blossom Tree Cake Company’s Kean Ong. “I combine my passion for using the freshest locally sourced natural ingredients and make everything from scratch. I like to focus on creating timelessly elegant wedding cakes with contemporary clean lines and exquisite sugar flowers. Taking inspiration from nature, I’m always looking to continue to develop my own style rather than following trends.”

The Cake Parlour

“My style is elegant and modern with clean sharp lines,” says The Cake Parlour’s Julia Timmins. “I love sugar flowers – although time consuming, they elevate the aesthetics of the finished cake to another level. I also love how guests are surprised to discover they’re actually made from sugar – and are not real! Whatever you want, I’m passionate about creating beautiful designs and flavours, and it’s my goal to provide a show stopping centre piece for your day.”  www.facebook.com/cakeparlourdoncaster

Cake and Coe

“I specialise in buttercream and ganache cakes with modern and elegant designs,” says Cake and Coe’s Sammi Williamson.

“My style of cake is very much the ‘less-is-more’ approach; showcasing clean-cut and smooth edges, but with the ability to add elements of rustic charm or other details to ensure each cake is a reflection of the couple it represents. I also love a smooth buttercream finish with fresh florals to complement your bouquet and venue decorations.”

Blooming Marvellous Cakes

“I offer bespoke hand piped floral buttercream cupcakes; an alternative to a traditional cake,” says Blooming Marvellous Cakes’ Jane Tucker. “Flowers have always been a key element in cake designs; and with me my cupcakes look like real flowers! I tend to offer vanilla cupcakes as they best complement Madagascan bourbon vanilla buttercream. Some couples also request an additional six inch cutting cake to accompany the cupcakes, which can be in a flavour of their choice.”

Hannah’s Kitchen

“My cakes are bright, creative and fun,” says Hannah’s Kitchen’s Hannah Andrews. “I love a twist, I love a quirk, and I love colour. During the planning I enjoy finding out about my couple and their plans, and if I have the chance to put something personal in their bake, I embrace it. My couples also like the idea of offering their guests different options – and with mini cakes and cupcakes to brownies, millionaire’s shortbread and cookies, there’s something for everyone.”

www.hannahskitchenleeds.co.uk

The Bakery Barn

“We offer all styles of wedding cakes,” says The Bakery Barn’s Heidi Banks. “With many couples choosing a more rustic setting for their venue, the naked cake is often the choice and is always popular when we exhibit at wedding fairs. The semi naked cake is probably the most ‘on trend’ cake, with the full buttercream cake being another popular option. Whatever you choose, we care about what we do and have the experience essential to be trusted to supply your big day bake.”

www.thebakerybarn.co.uk

Dreamcatcher Cakes by Tracy-Anne

“I create cakes which include inspiration from details on wedding dresses or artwork from stationery,” says Dreamcatcher Cakes by Tracy-Anne’s TracyAnne Hirst. “More drawn to modern-looking designs, I’ve noticed that my couples are open to trying different flavours, especially combinations they may not have thought of before. My personal favourite is a zesty lemon and poppy seed sponge combined with Sicilian lemon flavour buttercream.”

CAKES 59

Cakerbells

“My favourite cakes to make are semi naked and rustic buttercream,” says Cakerbells’ Jessica Richmond. “More adventurous flavours such as Biscoff and red velvet have been a huge hit with couples, and I find that traditional fruit cakes are rarely requested. Whatever you choose, being a small business, it’s always a privilege being asked to make a wedding cake for a couple’s special day. I put a lot of love into my cakes, and each bake leaves me with a cherished memory.”

www.cakerbells.co.uk

Katrina’s Bespoke Cakes

“My style is modern and elegant, focusing on tall, sharped edges with handcrafted sugar florals,” says Katrina’s Bespoke Cakes’ Katrina Meggitt. “I’m seeing a lot of flowers for this year, however, I think the main trend is that couples are not afraid to choose a design based on what they love. I don’t think they feel pressured to stick to one idea of what a wedding cake should or has to be anymore. This means cakes are becoming more like pieces of art and so much fun for a cake designer.”

The Paradise Cake Company

“Timeless and elegant, my cakes are luxurious and made of the finest quality ingredients,” says The Paradise Cake Company’s Hannah Ephraim Walpole. “My most popular flavour right now is lemon, combined with other flavours such as elderflower or blueberries. Whatever flavour you choose, I pay attention to detail – all my bakes are works of art created with you as a couple in mind, to give you the wedding cake of your dreams.”

Those in-the-know solve your wedding dilemmas

WE’RE ENGAGED!

My fiancé and I are considering an engagement shoot. What should we look for when booking a photographer? My advice would be look for someone that understands your style. Speak to different photographers (even ones that have a portfolio you’re not necessarily too keen on) and get to know them, seeing what ideas come out of those conversations. Personally, when I’m working with clients I talk with them, invite them to my studio space for a look around and try to understand what they would like to reflect in their images. Also, don’t ever be frightened to say no! Sometimes photographers just are not the right fit, and a good one won’t be offended and will understand.

SAY CHEESE

We want to capture our guests having fun at our reception, and are looking for something in addition to our photographer. What should we consider?

Imagine trying to get all your guests to pose for your photographer! It’s never going to happen, but we have the solution. In our opinion there’s no better choice than one of our high-end luxury oak photo booths, each offering something slightly different for your wedding. All our booths are provided with a large choice of backdrops to beautifully frame your photographs and they all produce studio quality photography, thanks to the professional flash equipment and lighting. Staffed by our friendly team, we’ll ensure your guests have the best photo booth experience available – think instant prints, unlimited usage, black and white or colour, instant digital sharing via email and text and a full online gallery after the event.

63 ASK THE EXPERTS

SOUND OF MUSIC

We don’t want conventional music for our wedding, and instead fancy something completely different. Do you have any suggestions?

There are many ways to make the music at your wedding unique and different from the norm. Incorporating traditional folk music from your cultural heritage can be a great way to pay homage to your roots and add some personal touches to your celebration. Alternatively, a surprise act such as our Love Actually Band is a brilliant way to add

colour to your celebrations. Another idea would be to incorporate some of your more daring guests in a musical flash mob! You can even hire a live band that plays a genre of music that’s not typically heard at weddings. The back catalogue of Aqua may be considered a bit lame by most but if you like it go for it, as everybody secretly loves a bit of Dr Jones and Barbie Girl!

LOVE IN LEEDS

We’re struggling to find a venue in Leeds centre to get our guests talking! We want something stylish but different from the norm. What can you suggest?

In the heart of Leeds City Centre lies a hidden jewel! Leeds Library is the oldest library of its kind in the UK, and to step into its Georgian Grade II listed building is to step back in time over 200 years, leaving the bustle of the modern world behind. This unique venue is available for ceremonies with up to 88 guests. The 150-year-old New Room provides the setting for intimate and atmospheric ceremonies; and the galleries, spiral staircases, sash windows, window seats, book-lined office and reading room are the perfect backdrop for lovers of both books and history.

www.theleedslibrary.org.uk/weddings

HOT & COLD

We’re getting married in winter, and I’m worried about choosing a dress that stops me being cold for the service, but makes me too hot dancing at night! What can I do?

Please don’t stress too much, as the adrenaline you’ll naturally be creating on the day will keep you warm anyway. The best thing to do in this situation is think about adding something to complement your gown, while knowing you’ll stay warm during your service. This can be anything from a veil, in a single or double tier, to a bolero or jacket in a fabric like lace or faux fur. These give coverage and warmth if you’re chilly, as well as letting you remove it at night to dance the night away! Some brides choose to be a little more casual and wear a cool denim or leather jacket; whereas if you’re looking for real drama, why not go for a full length fur cape?

Q&A Beauty

Our experts answer your summer hair and beauty dilemmas

FIGHT THE FRIZZ

How can I stop my hair from becoming a frizzy mess at our summer wedding?

Worrying about the humidity creating frizzy hair is understandable, but there’s plenty you can do to help. Preparations can start a few months ahead by using a professionally recommended shampoo and conditioner, so speak to your bridal hair specialist for the brand they advise works best for your locks. If possible, avoid using heat on your hair a month before your wedding, turning the dial down and considering ‘heat as a treat’. On the day style your hair dry, using a texture spray to further prevent frizz. Next, use an anti-frizz smoothing cream, applying sparingly a section at a time, before styling and finishing with a small amount of anti-frizz serum or argan oil to the ends of the hair.

MAKE-UP MELTDOWN

Is it really possible for my make-up to last all day for our August celebration?

Of course, so long as you remember that as with any bridal make-up, skin prep is key. Make sure you are well hydrated and have been drinking plenty of water. If you’ve oily skin invest in an oil-free, hydrating moisturiser/primer. Foundation-wise, choose the correct shade if you tan well and buy a good setting powder. A good waterproof mascara is also a must, as is setting spray; asking a professional makeup artist what one they’d choose for you.

When it comes to the actual day, get ready in a cool room that’s not too crowded. Take a handheld fan with you and if you find yourself in direct sun try to at least keep your face in the shade. If you sweat, be sure to dab and don’t wipe! The less contact you have with your face the longer your make-up will stay in place.

Being Sophie

Sophie Stonehouse on body positivity, self-love and flawless skin

Social media sensation Sophie Stonehouse, is perhaps best known for her appearance on the fourth series of Netflix’s reality dating show, Too Hot To Handle. Hailing from Brighton, she was the only British cast member and made her mark as the group of risqué singletons were put to the test of abstinence in order to keep their prize money high and stay in with a chance of winning it. Since leaving the villa, she has dedicated her time to producing fashion and style content for her social media followers, now numbering in their hundreds of thousands. Lesser known however are her struggles with body dysmorphia and her fight to achieve body positivity. Being the centre of attention on their wedding day, isn’t every couple’s dream with issues such as Sophie’s becoming more prevalent, and importantly more commonly discussed. So, CWM’s beauty and wellness editor, Kelly Andrews, caught up with Sophie to find out how she overcame these personal challenges, as well as discovering her top health and wellbeing tips.

What will you take away from your time on Too Hot To Handle?

The experience really taught me about self-love and respect. It also taught me that the most incredible experiences in life, happen when you least expect it. I feel very lucky to have had the opportunity to go on the show.

What have you been up to since you left the show?

I’ve completely transformed my career to become a full-time content creator. It’s a job I’ve always wanted to do. It’s definitely not an easy one, but it’s very fulfilling. I’ve also found a new relationship since leaving the show, and I’m very happy.

You seem very at home in your own body. How did you find this confidence?

Body confidence is something I’ve definitely struggled with, and I’m definitely a victim of body dysmorphia. But, I found the confidence to be at home in my own body, when I realised that I was never truly going to be happy with it. I noticed that I was always finding something to complain about whether I was overweight or underweight. Once I learned to accept myself, only then did I truly feel at home.

Are you able to tell us a bit about your battle with body dysmorphia and coming out the other side?

I’ve suffered badly with it over the past couple years. Since being

82
© James Rudland

a young adult, my weight has fluctuated year after year, and when I turned 18, I put on quite a bit. Then, as the first Covid lockdown hit I fell in love with fitness and completely transformed my life and body. However, that did come with its own disadvantages. I became obsessed with it all and would really get down on myself when I didn’t work out or eat right. Ultimately though, it taught me that no matter where I am with my body, I’m always going to want to change something whether I’m in perfect shape or not. I feel that now I have a happy balance and have accepted myself the way I am. I know that I want to look good, but I also want to enjoy my fried chicken burger, fries and a gallon of mayo without feeling bad!

How do you want to encourage and inspire women to discover their own self-love?

I think it’s important to remember that no one really cares. That’s what I learnt after suffering with pretty bad acne. I thought everyone was looking at me and the reality was that they just weren’t. As soon as you start putting yourself outside of your comfort zone, your confidence will grow. Another big one: don’t be mean to yourself, give yourself a break.

Wedding dress shopping can be a stressful time for those with worries about certain aspects of their body. What should they be looking for to feel more confident on the big day?

I think it’s so important to leave any expectations at the door. Go into the shopping experience with an open mind and a clean canvas. I’d be looking for something I feel comfortable and myself in. I think it’s important to remember that most people aren’t completely happy with themselves, and that’s okay. Go with what feels right and remember: on the day you really won’t care about the little things.

For many, their wedding day is the first time a couple will find themselves the centre of attention with all eyes on them. Some may find this uncomfortable, particularly if they’re feeling self conscious about their body. What advice would you have for them?

As long as you’ve made the day enjoyable for yourself as well as your guests, you’ll get lost in the experience. I think a lot of couples get caught up in making the experience great for their guests, but forget about their own wants and needs. I think it’s important to have fun with the

whole thing, don’t do anything or wear anything that makes you feel uncomfortable or not yourself. This is your day to shine. If you don’t like wearing a high heel and it isn’t for you, then don’t! Make the day perfect for you and throw on those trainers.

What does a typical day look like for you?

My typical day at the moment starts with a dog walk and a coffee. I live next to a canal, so I walk my dog there every morning. I then get back and make myself some breakfast and start my working day. After work I’ll try to walk him again before heading home to make dinner and relax. At this point in my life, it’s all about career and I’m happy with that.

Your skin is flawless! Tell us about your daily skincare routine. Surprisingly I don’t do a lot! I have very sensitive skin, so I like to keep it minimal. My go-to everyday skincare routine consists of my Garnier Micellar Water on a cotton pad, which I use to clean my face and remove all make-up. I follow that with Simple’s Replenishing Rich Moisturiser and Eye Cream. It’s really just that simple… less is more!

Are there any products you’d recommend to a nearlywed looking to get their skin in top condition for the big day?

I’d highly recommend GlamGlow’s face masks. They’re incredible and will help to get your skin looking perfect for the big day. For those suffering with acne, my top tip is: stop touching your face! I’m a picker and once I stopped it went away, very quickly.

What make-up products can’t you live without?

Cream contours and eyebrow gel!

What’s next for Sophie Stonehouse?

At the moment I’m working towards growing my platform. We have some exciting things in the pipeline for this year so you’ll just have to wait and see!

Groomed Mobile Barbers have seen a rise in bookings for home haircuts and beard trims for weddings. Able to set up anywhere, Groomed Mobile Barbers bring with them everything needed to ensure your hair is styled, beard is trimmed and shave is perfectly smooth.

Owner Giuliano Dore tells us: “In many cultures, the bride gathers with her bridesmaids to have her make-up and hair done just before the wedding, but in the past, men simply queued at their local barber shop waiting for their turn. Now, everyone wants to have memorable photos, look their best and make more of the morning preparations. I advise grooms-to-be to consult with a barber about the style that they want before the wedding. A dramatic change may not be the most sensible thing to do just before you say your vows. Have a restyle a month or two before so that your wedding cut is just a tidy up and there are no shocks on the day.”

Dressed TO IMPRESS

The team at Colour Me Beautiful share their fashion advice for the groom-to-be

Choosing the right outfit for your special day will come down to a variety of factors: the style of wedding you’re having, the venue, the time of year and, of course, what your partner is wearing. To help you find the perfect look, we’ve asked Cliff Bashforth, the MD of Colour Me Beautiful, to share his top styling tips:

CHOOSING A STYLE

There are different styles of formal attire available for men, some of which are more traditional than others.

Morning dress: This is the most formal suit worn during the day and works well for all body shapes and sizes.

Tuxedo: A formal look typically used for evening receptions, tuxedos can be either single or double-breasted, and for a less formal look you have the option of adding a coloured tie and waistcoat or cummerbund.

Frock coat: A popular addition to the wedding scene, the frock coat can be made from luxury fabrics such as brocade or velvet. It’s best suited for average to tall, inverted triangle and rectangle body shapes, but can be worn with a waistcoat.

Lounge suit: This is a relaxed formal wear and is suitable for any time of day. If you aren’t used to wearing a suit during the day, this might be the most comfortable option. Choose fabrics carefully: a crisper fabric for an inverted triangle, lightweight for a rectangle and a softer, woven fabric such as lightweight flannel for a round body shape.

Alternatives: If a uniform is part of your life, you may want to wear a formal version of it for your wedding. The same applies if you have traditional dress, religious or otherwise. For an informal wedding, you may want to wear a lounge suit, with or without a tie.

HIRING

Don’t hesitate to hire the men’s attire, but make sure that you have tried your suit on in advance

and that the sleeve lengths are correct, and the trousers fit properly.

Whether you want the best man, fathers, and ushers to wear the same as the groom is entirely a personal choice. However, the best man usually wears the same style of suit as the groom. What the other men in the bridal party wear often depends on the formality of the wedding. If you choose to have a page boy or ring bearer, make sure that he’s comfortable in what he wears to avoid any last-minute tantrums.

ACCESSORIES

The way the men in the bridal party wear the various accessories that complete their outfit is important, and you will want to make sure they get it right. This is where you can co-ordinate or contrast colours and demonstrate some of your personality.

Shirts, ties, and cufflinks: The choice of shirt will depend on the neckwear. For example, a tie requires a standard shirt and collar, a self-tie cravat can be worn with a standard or wing collar, a cravat needs a wing collar to go with it and if you’ve decided to go for a bow tie, team it with a standard or wing collar. Whatever the type of neckwear, it should be made from silk so it falls well.

Cufflinks are only worn with a shirt that has double fold back cuffs. Beware of choosing jokey inappropriate cufflinks for a formal wedding.

Waistcoats: You can choose a waistcoat in the same colour as your jacket or a contrasting one. Consider wearing something different from the rest of the men to help you stand out and make your own fashion statement. As with any waistcoat, always leave the lowest button open.

Cummerbunds, belts and braces: A cummerbund can be worn with a black tie or tuxedo and is great for tidying up the waistline and disguising a rounded stomach.

A cummerbund should always be teamed with a bow tie, and you can have fun choosing suitable colours for both.

If the suit trousers have loops, these call for a belt (and certainly no braces), but if these are unable to be altered to fit for the occasion and there are no belt loops, braces will be needed. Under no circumstances should these be worn together!

Shoes and socks: Black shoes should be highly polished and not scuffed; black patent can be worn with black tie. Make sure any labels on the soles are removed before wearing them.

Socks should be worn in plain, dark colours and made from wool, cotton, or silk. Avoid man-made fibres to prevent discomfort. They should be long enough to cover your lower calf.

Boutonnière or buttonholes: A boutonnière is a small flower arrangement placed in the buttonhole. Your boutonnière should match the flowers or colours used throughout the rest of the wedding.

Boutonnières for the rest of the men in the wedding party should be the same style or colour as yours, but not exactly the same in other respects. Double check that the stem of the boutonnière is securely pinned to the lapel.

GROOMING

Make sure you’ve booked a haircut for the photographs. If you have heavy brows, they should be controlled – you may need to get your tweezers out! It goes without saying that shaving or beard trimming must be attended to at the appropriate time prior to the ceremony. Your hands will also be on display on the day, so treat yourself to a manicure the day before the wedding or do it yourself if you have the time.

HONEYMOON NEWS 91

MY EVERYTHINGMy first, my last,

Located in the South Ari Atoll, renowned for its marine life and coral gardens, the resort is spread over two islands: one, the blissfully peaceful adult only island; the other slightly more buzzy, welcoming families; both stunningly beautiful and connected via a 500m wooden bridge – the first of its kind in the Maldives! Getting there couldn’t be easier with BA flying direct from London Heathrow! Once you land in Malé, you can rest in the Conrad Lounge to cool off with a refreshing juice, bite to eat and even a shower if you so wish before you embark on your seaplane for a 30-minute breathtaking flight to your home for the duration of your honeymoon. And home it is. The resort’s friendliness is not to be taken for granted, expect warm smiles, relaxed vibes and no stuffiness often associated with such glamorous resorts.

AN ISLAND OF FIRSTS!

Conrad Maldives Rangali Island boasts the nation’s first underground wine cellar, first below sea level bedroom in The Muraka (with the first underwater elevator in the Maldives!), first dedicated cheese bar and the first to open an authentic Chinese restaurant in the Maldives, Ufaa – to name a few of its innovations. It’s only right to be the first destination to experience as a married couple. Goosebumps, right?

A ROOM WITH A VIEW

I was fortunate to stay in one of the sunset water villas complete with a private plunge infinity pool allowing you to watch the sky turn from the brightest blue to blazon orange with a glass of bubbles in hand. Utter indulgence. If staying over the water is not your thing, the opposing side of the island offers fabulously chic beach villas with private pool just steps away from the turquoise waters that you’ve only ever seen on postcards.

UNDERWATER LIFE

Maldives offers worldclass snorkelling and diving opportunities. On the Rangali Island’s house reef, I was lucky enough to spot a manta ray, baby black fin sharks, who have kept to the shallows to learn to feed and grow, parrot fish, turtles, reef sharks and shoals of colourful fish imitating a scene

Rachel Westall experienced five-star, desert island luxury at Conrad Maldives Rangali Island

from Finding Nemo! If this isn’t enough, the resort offers an excellent range of water sports and boasts a PADI 5* dive centre. I was lucky enough to enjoy a champagne sunset cruise where we viewed joyful spinner dolphins playing gleefully in the waves; as well as our search for the magnificent whale shark which, like us, enjoys bathing in these warm, tropical waters.

indulged in a 90-minute session entitled Mindful Bliss. Watching the fish beneath through the glass-bottomed treatment room, my therapist began the ritual to restore harmony and balance. She started with the most fabulous back massage, followed by a mini facial using clear quartz crystal wands and finished with the entrancing effect of fragrant coconut oil being gently poured on my forehead and hairline (often known as your Third-Eye Chakra). My hair has never felt so nourished following this invigorating hair and scalp massage.

A FOODIES’ PARADISE

Foodies are in for a treat with 12 restaurants to sample. Wake up to room service or enjoy breakfast at Vilu, the à la carte establishment offering dishes from smashed avocado with sourdough to eggs benedict to sensational pancakes for those with a sweet tooth, or head over to the very relaxed Atoll Market, the resort’s only buffet restaurant. Here you can sample many international cuisines, everything from sushi to freshlymade omelettes and help yourself to a smoothie pressed-to-order or a fruit platter from the cold room.

Another first, dine below deck at fine-dining restaurant, Ithaa. Here, I was lucky enough to enjoy a set menu which consisted of silky dill-infused salmon, foie gras torchon, and miso and truffle marinated black cod fillet, all beautifully paired with a sensational Sauvignon Blanc – all this whilst watching reef sharks gliding past the surrounding glass walls. As well as these choices, there’s Ufaa by Jereme Leung, where you can sample handmade noodles and dim sum; and the island’s health restaurant, Mandhoo – expect freshly caught seafood, lobster and fragrant flavours aplenty.

FEEL-GOOD TRAVEL

Eco-conscious travel is all the rage and Conrad Maldives Rangali Island is certainly getting involved in the promise to go green. You’d be hard pushed to find a single-use plastic in the resort as bamboo options (even your key card) are being introduced at every opportunity. Furthermore, and I was so excited to be a part of this, in 2017 the resort launched a coral regeneration programme, which aims to protect the surrounding reefs. With a complex eco-system and more than 10,000 species in the Maldives, the programme includes a coral nursery and a coral adoption programme for guests to partake in. The super-friendly dive team and I took to the waters to replant baby coral to flourish in their new home and hopefully thrive and grow. In six months’ time they’ll update me on my coral’s progress! Watch this space...

TRUE ROMANCE

It’s safe to say the staff at Conrad Maldives Rangali Island will do everything to make your stay one to remember whether you’d like to experience private dining beneath the stars on your veranda listening to the sea lap around your stilted accommodation; or a private beach dinner, just you, your love and the powder white sand beneath your feet. For total relaxation, a visit to one of the island’s two spas is a must. I

HONEYMOON REVIEW 93

HAVEN A Celtic

Peace and tranquillity awaits honeymooners at Galgorm in Northern Ireland

WhileNorthern Ireland might not be the first place you think of when planning a mini-moon, having spent two nights at the incredible Galgorm Resort near Ballymena, CWM deputy managing editor Kelly Andrews is here to change that!

Northern Ireland’s premier luxury hotel and spa, located just 30 minutes from Belfast, offers the ultimate haven of relaxation. Set within 380 acres of parkland with the sometimes rushing, sometimes babbling River Maine running through it, Galgorm’s enviable location truly provides an escape from the real world.

A SPOT OF R&R

The jewel in Galgorm’s crown is the Thermal Spa Village, which I’d go so far as to say is unique, as I can honestly say I’ve never encountered its like. So vast is it that you need a map to orientate yourself! It’s fortunate indeed then that it has it’s own app containing just that, plus all the info you could possibly need during your stay. My accommodation was a mere two-minute walk to the entrance, so I was up bright and early, donned the robe and flip flops provided, and was off to investigate. Despite the flight from Stansted the previous day being one of the most stressful in recent memory, I could already feel the tension melt away as I strolled alongside the River nodding a cheerful, “good morning,” to fellow guests as I went.

If your experience of a spa is a pool, Jacuzzi, steam room and a sauna, maybe a hot tub if you’re really lucky, you’ll be swept off your feet by the Thermal Village! Mainly based in the open air it features a Wonderland of treats to explore and experience around every corner. I happened upon the Riverside Garden first; home to outdoor pools, hot tubs, The Salt Cave, a cafe and the Celtic Sauna. In some of the Resort’s packages you’ll receive a complementary 10-minute Celtic Sauna Infusion here, which was the case with my shepherd’s hut accommodation. So naturally, I wasted no time!

We were shown into the sauna by our sauna master, where I was pleasantly surprised to find a floor-to-ceiling window along one side acting as a frame for the stunning, tranquil landscape beyond. It occurred to me that what this place does so well is allow nature to do its thing in providing all the beauty and relaxation anyone could wish for. The landscape is part of the experience, not just a mere sideline, but I digress...

This treatment is a traditional Aufghuss ceremony consisting of three balls of ice being thrown onto hot coals, each one containing essential oils to benefit the body in a different way (breathing, circulation and skin) with each temperature more intense than the last. The air was circulated by the sauna master who used a towel to push the aromas towards us in the mesmerising, dance-like movements characteristic of the ceremony. As Celtic music played softly in the background, it was easy to drift away. When the ritual was over, we were escorted to the firepit area, where we were served a cool and refreshing watermelon punch to bring the body temperature back down.

As I continued my explorations, I came across The Walled Garden and couldn’t resist stopping for a cocktail in The Palm House, where I was able to recline and take in the views of the beautifully manicured gardens. Soon though, it was time for my private Riverside Bathing Experience. From reception, charming host Kenneth showed me the way to Birch, my very own secluded hot tub for the hour. The water is heated by log burner to 39 degrees, and the comforting smell of the wood burning only adds to the experience. A glass of prosecco waited for me and I was able to order more drinks using the QR code provided, which would be served tubside. All of my senses were engaged as I listened to the calming music and the sounds of the flowing river, sipped on my prosecco, enjoyed the smell of the wood smoke, and felt the warm water relax my muscles – this was the life!

The Thermal Village is actually open until 9pm, but by 6pm it was

Scan to view video 94

time for me to reluctantly head back to the hut to get ready for dinner. I procrastinated all the way though, stopping en route for one last visit to my beloved River House (with its infared beds and views of the cascading River), a hot chocolate enjoyed on the riverside boardwalk, and a spell in The Alpine Garden’s vitality pool.

HEARTY FARE

The foodies amongst you will be equally as delighted by Galgorm as the spa aficionados since there are no fewer than three restaurants to choose from for dinner: Fratelli Ristorante, Gillies Grill and Castle Kitchen + Bar (the latter just a short transfer away). That’s not even counting the other options for afternoon tea in The Conservatory, where you can also find the Cocktail Bar & Gin Library, and McKendry’s, all up at the main house.

This was my first visit to Northern Ireland and I found the people to be some of the friendliest I’ve ever encountered while travelling. We honestly felt like we were among friends, and the staff at Galgorm can’t do enough for their guests. We didn’t have to make the walk from our shepherd’s hut to Gillies Grill once as we simply dialled reception and a short while later a thoroughly charming member of staff would be there to collect us, which was most appreciated, particularly when it rained.

Gillies Grill is reportedly a favourite amongst guests and locals alike, and it’s not difficult to see why. With a warm informal atmosphere, and hunting lodge vibes, it offers a menu sure to delight any palate. Interestingly, the menus for all of the eateries at the Resort are accessed via QR code, so you can peruse at leisure on your phone. No doubt developed during the pandemic, it helps to keep everyone safe, but is also kind to the environment cutting down on paper.

I opted for the barbecue pork bites, followed by the braised brisket of beef for main, finished off with a selection of delicious Irish cheeses. After thanking our super-sweet and helpful server, we made our way through to the adjoining McKendry’s. With a traditional Irish pub vibe, it’s also the Resort’s exclusive whiskey bar, offering an impressive collection of 300plus varieties from more than 21 countries. Here, we happily let our dinner go down while sipping on another cocktail and listening to the live music.

When it comes to culinary highlights, for me, it was breakfast. I’ll admit to being like a kid in a sweetshop! The spread was a joyous sight to behold with everything you could possibly dream of for the most important meal of the day from muffins and pastries; fish, cold meats and cheeses; cereals and fruit; to pancakes, full Irish breakfast, waffles and toast. Self control was most definitely needed!

HOME AWAY FROM HOME

Opened as a bed and breakfast more than 30 years ago, Galgorm has grown into the immense site it is today with 125 luxurious guestrooms, including 48 deluxe rooms, Junior and Signature suites, along with a range of more out-of-the-ordinary accommodation such as log cabins, cottage suites, shepherd’s huts and exclusive residences perfect for groups. But it hasn’t stopped there as it’s still growing with works currently underway and more in the pipeline. Even as I visited, work on a group of two storey cottages was nearing completion and land was about to be cleared for the new treehouse accommodation.

I was happily ensconced in one of the Resort’s shepherd’s huts during my stay. Welcomed by an electric woodburner cosily heating this home away from home, we quickly discovered all the comforts we could wish for were provided. I was obsessed with the huge outdoor copper bath, which I made a dive for as soon as I’d dumped my bags. The complimentary G&T and bath bomb, were much appreciated additions following the aforementioned airport hell.

For honeymooners though, there are two particular showstoppers that I would highly recommend! If you’re looking for ultimate luxury, Suite 1857 can be found in the original manor house and offers unrivalled views of the River from its Juliet balcony. Elegant and romantic, its rooms are decorated in brocade wall coverings in a muted palette, antique lighting, and French Baroque-style furniture, with solid oak floors and beams. It features a lounge area with sofa and two arm chairs for curling up in front of the TV, plus bathroom with free-standing bath and walk-in shower.

If a secluded, rustic, woodland escape is more your vibe the Shepherd’s Hut Suite is the place for you. Nestled in Galgorm Wood with the cascading River running alongside it, it’s luxuriously appointed with a lounge, mini kitchen, and bathroom with shower room and free-standing bath. But the stand-out features, without doubt, are your very own sauna and hot tub on the terrace. Enjoy a soak in the warm waters as you watch the sun set and raise a glass to yourselves, the newlyweds.

Olivia Gibson ventures to Staffordshire for a spa minimoon at Moddershall Oaks

Nestled in 72 acres of tranquil parkland in the Staffordshire countryside, Moddershall Oaks Country Spa Retreat is a luxurious property with lavish suites, spa facilities, lakeside dining and a wellness centre. The retreat offers a private location surrounded by unspoilt views of the rolling countryside, setting the perfect scene for romantic minimoons and getaways.

I felt a calming oasis as soon as I ventured onto Moddershall Oaks’ winding driveway. With the sun beaming down on me, I quickly left the outside world behind. The next thing I knew, I was enjoying an elderflower spritz while chatting to the attentive and friendly staff who were on hand throughout my entire stay.

REST YOUR HEAD

With only 10 suites on-site, I was excited to see my accommodation, and I wasn’t disappointed when I entered the modern space. Complete with air-conditioning, a seating area with plush furnishings, a private terrace, a smart TV, a desk, and a stylish bathroom with a rainfall shower; it had all the amenities needed for a tranquil stay.

All overnight guests can book a private 30-minute session in the outdoor hot tub. I went for a late night dip, so I could enjoy the sun setting and view the beautiful stars. The water was the perfect temperature, with water jets and warm lighting to add to the oh-so-romantic atmosphere.

When it was time to rest my head, I quickly entered dreamland thanks to the comfortable king-sized bed and fluffy pillows.

THE ULTIMATE SPA SESSION

Moddershall Oaks is more than just a spa; it’s a tranquil setting to enjoy quality time with loved ones. In the heart of the property, couples will find an outdoor heated vitality pool to enjoy year-round regardless of the weather. Surrounding the pool are comfortable loungers, providing the ideal location to read a book and enjoy a bite from the spa deli. I loved the views of the rolling countryside from the Kelo sauna and the calming setting in the intimate relaxation lounge with comfy sofas and blankets to

snuggle up.

The indoor spa area was my favourite space, with a hydrotherapy pool plus two overhead water jets designed to massage the upper back and neck muscles, while helping to promote blood circulation. Some of my personal highlights included the steam room, the 10-meter pool, the foot baths, heated loungers and the experience shower.

I was lucky enough to experience an Indian-inspired head massage during my stay. The talented beauty therapist used the latest massaging techniques to help tackle the problem areas in my upper back, shoulders, neck, face and scalp. As someone who struggles with tension headaches, I didn’t realise how much I needed the treatment. For 25 minutes, my problems melted away while I focused on the relaxing music and the calming aromas.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

As a massive food lover, I couldn’t wait to enjoy a two-course meal at The Oak House Restaurant after hearing great things about the menu. Spoiler alert, I wasn’t disappointed! Using local produce and fresh seasonal ingredients, where possible, the talented chefs created a feast. For my starter, I went with the lemongrass chicken bao buns with apple and cucumber salad and a spiced honey dressing. I opted for the beerbattered haddock fillet for my main, with skin-on triple-cooked chips, homemade tartare sauce and pea puree – the flavours were exquisite.

Wrapped in my fluffy robe, I returned to the restaurant for breakfast the following morning – the perfect way to start the day. I enjoyed a continental breakfast followed by avocado on toasted sourdough and a poached egg before walking around the lake and relaxing in the hammocks. I was sad to be checking out of this wonderful resort and can’t wait to return soon.
