The Spa at Pennyhill Park’s award-winning relaxation facilities, which already boast a state-of-the-art fitness suite and a variety of thermal and sensory spa experiences, are expanding with the addition of their new cabanas. Named after different herbs: Bergamot, Lemon Thyme, Peppermint, and Sorrel, the corresponding namesake herb will be planted around each respective cabana for use when making signature infused water, tisanes, and cocktails for guests. A DATE FOR YOUR DIARY

Strawberry Hill House and Garden has been described as a ‘magical wedding venue’ and with good reason. It was created in the 18th century by the famous writer and collector, Horace Walpole, and today, his stunning white villa is not only Grade I-listed but is internationally recognised as Britain’s finest example of domestic Georgian Gothic revival architecture. With the Thames nearby, Strawberry Hill benefits from extensive grounds, complete with five acres of Grade II* listed gardens, making it ideal for those all-important photographs.

To give couples a vision of what their celebrations could look like, couples are invited to the Wedding Open House on Saturday 7th October 2023, between 11am and 3pm. It’s the perfect opportunity to help you realise your vision for your special day, with the house dressed and presented to showcase a range of styles. You’ll have the chance to view the big-day spaces, meet the wedding team, who’ll be able to answer all your questions and discuss your ideal food and drink choices for your day – choosing whether to have canapes and cocktails to begin the celebrations or something more playful, such as patisserie cabinets, bagel walls or even pizza vans.

From intimate gatherings to grand affairs of more than 200 guests, Strawberry Hill House was built as a special place to entertain, dazzle and inspire romance. The Wedding Open House is an ideal way to see how you can create your fairytale day in a gorgeous white castle.

TEEING OFF THE

par-fect date

Jade and Dan’s day was full of fun, laughter and confetti galore!

Images courtesy of We Are Found Photography

Jade and Dan have their friends to thank for their introduction. “We got chatting at a small gathering and contacted each other as soon as we got home,” Jade recalls. “We both instantly knew we liked each other, and it was something we wanted to pursue.”

A few days later the duo arranged to have a round of mini golf followed by lunch, which then extended to dinner that night. “We just didn’t want the date to end. We met up almost every day after that. It was instant for us,” she says. “The mini golf was the only time he’s ever let me win. We still have the score card and you can see the total scores are added up wrong at the end by him to give me the win!” As a nod to their first date, Jade played mini golf with her best friends during her hen party. “I did actually win that time,” she says.

Dan proposed on Christmas Eve, insisting that Jade opened a couple of presents before family arrived the next day. “I opened a small box; it was a ring – not just any ring, a ring he had given me on our first Christmas together when we first met,” says Jade. “He said this was a perfect placeholder until we could go shopping together and choose a ring we both loved. The next week we went ring shopping and found ‘the one’.” Here Jade tells us more about their day…

REAL WEDDINGS 31

The grounds at Barnett Hill are stunning. We loved the idea of booking the whole place and having rooms for our guests to stay. We were all about our guests and ensuring they had the best time.

My sister was maid of honour; but we invited guests to match our colour scheme to feel like a bridesmaid. Match the colours, wear a beautiful dress, why not – it was super fun.

The boys wore a lovely suit from Next and accessorised with buttonholes matching the bouquets and pocket watches that we gifted to them on the day.

I got ready with my mum, sister, family friend and sister-in-laws, which was really special. Although they weren’t bridesmaids, I wanted them to have a treat, so I gave them a personalised clutch bag.

We had guest bouquets, which was fun! We could see them being passed around for photos and it created that ‘everyone is top table’ feel.

The invites, table plans and menus all matched. I was really pleased with how it all came together.

32
I wore a dress from Wed2Be called ‘James’ and accessorised with a simple veil.

We stepped foot in Barnett Hill and said yes on the spot. We could just picture everything there, and we loved the support the team would bring.

We had two table plans; one for the main meal – two courses by the wonderful chef at Barnett Hill, and one for the cheese afternoon tea. Both meals were spectacular.

The venue recommended our florist. They gave me ideas and just ran with it. They were so easy to work with.

I’d designed the stationery. My favourite was the hotel door hanger, that the venue popped on guest doors before the party was over. A little finishing touch, with a thank you from us both and a note to join us for breakfast in the morning.

For both sit down meals we put questions on the tables to get guests talking… tell us how you know the bride/groom, then for cheese they were more cheese based, such as tell the table a cheesey joke. They really elevated the atmosphere at the tables.

I said I wanted neutral colours for the bouquets and our florist excelled.

We created stickers for the confetti pots and candles and placenames with ‘Mr and Mrs Onions’ that matched our theme to tie everything together.

For the afternoon tea, guests were seated at about 5pm, golden hour. Tables were winding through the hedges with the centrepieces moved from the wedding breakfast. It was magical.

We had a cheese explainer menu which explained the cheeses and why we personally love them. It was just nice to express to the guests that we chose Bath Soft cheese as long-time fans.

33 REAL WEDDINGS

We were whisked away into the beautiful grounds and thought we’d try our hand at smoke bombs. My two new brother-in-laws zoomed around us with smoke flares as the photographers snapped away. We love the results!

I wanted a simple cake design. We came up with a white textured cake and our cake supplier found the perfect dried flower cake hoop for the topper.

I always knew I wanted a cheese tiered cake from Bath Soft Cheese as well as a cake.

The cheese afternoon tea included tiers of meat, fruit, bread, cheese and cake – it looked stunning.

Wedding tip – you can never have too much confetti! It was thrown as we left the ceremony, during the first dance and in the group family photos. Who doesn’t love a confetti pic?

Our first dance was outside in the grounds to Sunday Morning by Maroon5. I was nervous but our photographers grabbed the spare confetti and dished it out to guests, which put me at ease.

Barnett Hill allowed us to choose and create our own Mr and Mrs cocktails. Dan’s was a long island iced tea (but with a very whiskey twist) and I had a Pornstar (Passionfruit) Martini. It was a fun addition to the day.

As soon as it was dark, we couldn’t resist doing a sparkler tunnel. I don’t think Dan’s ever done as many sparklers in his life until he met my family! We love a sparkler.

JADE AND DAN’S LITTLE WHITE BOOK

We were both so excited on the day as we knew we had some fun things organised with our loved ones. We’d also planned everything as best we could, which meant that we could relax. It was perfect.

One ring to RULE THEM ALL

With views over the Surrey Hills, Nutfield Priory set the scene for Kerry and Adam’s day Images courtesy of Leanne Ashcroft Photography

36

Kerry and Adam went to the same college, so they knew of each other but met and started talking in the gym. “Adam used the pick-up technique of teaching me how to use the gym equipment,” says Kerry. “We hit it off quite quickly. We talked for hours and found we had a lot in common.”

Eight happy years later Adam proposed. “We were on holiday in Lanzarote. He knows I’m shy, so he had the room transformed with petals and candles and proposed in private, just the way I liked it,” she recalls.

When it came to finding a venue, Nutfield took their breath away. “It was the first venue we visited, and it was just stunning,” Kerry says. “The tall stained-glass windows and large fireplaces gave off a luxurious but homely feeling. We were also attracted to the exclusive-use option, which would mean we could use the endless space on offer, including the beautiful terrace with views over the Surrey Hills.”

WHIMSICAL VIBES

Kerry wore the beautiful Kassia design by Morilee. “I’d visited around five bridal boutiques and initially chose an A-line, whimsical dress. My sister told me to try one more shop to help me be 100% sure I’d picked the right one, so I went with my mum, and it was the last dress I tried on. The lady in the store hadn’t shown it to me because it was a tad out of my budget,” says Kerry. “I tried it on and said, ‘oh dear’ knowing that I had fallen in love with something a little over my budget, but it was worth it because it made me feel amazing, and made my mum shed a little tear!”

Adam opted for a three-piece checked suit that he accessorised with a dusky pink tie and his groomsmen all complemented his style in navy suits. “In classic groom style, Adam purchased his suit only a few weeks before the day, but he still managed to find something perfect,” says Kerry. Their bridesmaids wore elegant floor-length dresses in dusky pink that suited the look of the day.

“For our styling, we wanted to go for a whimsical, laid-back vibe,” says Kerry. “Our florist created the beautiful centrepieces using eucalyptus, blush roses and pampas grass. They weren’t too high, which meant that our guests could see and talk to each other easily.” The rest of the blooms were matching in neutral tones mixed with dusky pink, eucalyptus, pampas grass, blush roses and gypsophila and their bridesmaids and flower girls accessorised with gypsophila in their hair.

“One of our highlights was the blossom tree arch that we said our vows under. It was just magical and really transformed the room. We also had a white starlight dancefloor which was beautiful in the evening,” says Kerry.

TALES OF MIDDLE-EARTH

Kerry and Adam had to postpone their big day numerous times due to the pandemic, and when it eventually came around, luckily for them, there were no more rules in place. “We were so relieved and wanted to include anything and everything!” says Kerry. “We’re massive Lord of the Rings fans, so we used Middle-Earth locations as table names and made the table plan following the same theme,” Kerry explains. The place names were made using tiny glass bottles that were hand-filled with

eucalyptus and finished with a brown craft tag inserted into the cork.

For their favours the duo opted for a selection of charity pins. “We chose a handful of charities that mean a lot to us. Particularly, the British Heart Foundation and Macmillan to honour loved ones who couldn’t be there,” says Kerry.

SWEET TREATS

The delightful semi-naked three-tiered cake was dressed in matching flowers to turn it into a showstopper. “We also had a Harry Potter-themed sweet cart that we made from scratch as a present to my sister for her wedding in 2016. It felt lovely to re-use it on our special day. I even made Harry Potter golden snitches out of Ferrero Roches,” says Kerry.

During the evening, guests had fun in the photobooth and enjoyed Italian delights from the pizza van later on. “The photobooth was a massive hit and it meant that we got an additional photo book – but a funnier version!” she says.

PRECIOUS MEMORIES

“Leanne, our photographer went above and beyond. She wasn’t just our photographer; she was a massive support when we rearranged our day multiple times and had the best wedding tips. She captured our day majestically and we couldn’t recommend her enough.”

Kerry and Adam both loved their day. “It felt surreal that we finally got there! We both felt relaxed and excited and having our six-month-old daughter with us made it even more special,” Kerry says.

As the clock struck twelve

Lauren and Charlie will never forget how special they felt on their magical day

Images courtesy of FotoFly Photography

43 REAL WEDDINGS

Lauren got a new job in the local pub where Charlie was working, and it was his looks that caught her eye. “After a few months we realised how compatible we really were. We got each other in ways that no one else had even come close to,” says Lauren.

The rest is history and a few years later, Charlie proposed. “It was New Year’s Eve as the clock struck midnight,” she says. “We were at my grandparents’ house which made it more special as I was surrounded by my family. It was a lovely surprise, he got it just right.”

The duo tied the knot at Morden Park followed by a reception at Coulsdon Manor. “Morden Park Registry Office was an immediate yes for us. The grounds are beautiful, and the staff made us feel so welcome and special. We liked the fact it was a big open space, which was perfect for our photos.” Here Lauren talks us through their big-day photo album…

I wore a white off-the-shoulder dress. As cringey as it sounds, it chose me! It was everything I said I didn’t want in a dress until I tried it on and burst into tears. I felt like one in a million.

Charlie wore a navy blue suit that he paired with brown loafers and his groomsmen wore the same coloured suit, but they chose their own style so it felt more personal to them.

I bought Charlie a pair of personalised cufflinks that we wore on the day.

During our ceremony Charlie got nervous and started pronouncing words wrong, so he had to keep starting the vows from the beginning again. It took him three times to get it right. It made us laugh.

I travelled to the ceremony with my mum and grandad. I was so nervous, but I was glad I had them with me. They kept me grounded and stopped me going mad.

Charlie was so nervous, his finger swelled and he got his ring stuck bless him. We got there in the end after nearly breaking his knuckle to get it on!

Our bridesmaids and two of our flower girls wore pink dresses, and our daughter wore a white dress to match my look.
44

We felt amazing as we left our ceremony. I was so happy to finally be able to call Charlie my husband and the sun came out just as we walked out which was perfect timing.

We’ve been to a few family parties at Coulsdon Manor so we knew we liked it. The staff were so friendly and couldn’t have done more for us. We wanted somewhere that would create the perfect backdrop for our photos and they have a beautiful outdoor space.

My aunt made the mirror welcome sign. The vinyl she used on top of the mirror changed between blue and pink depending on what angle you were looking at it, which we loved.

Our bouquets and centrepieces were pink, navy blue and white, and Charlie and his groomsmen wore matching buttonholes.

The Mr & Mrs sign was the best decision. We loved having that extra bit of sparkle and light on the dancefloor, and it fit the room perfectly.

For our guest book, we asked guests to write on small hearts and place them in a larger heart frame. It was the nicest touch as we got to keep the frame with everyone’s messages on to display at home.

Our DJ was amazing. If I requested a song, he played it straight away which made me very happy. Guests could also request songs so we had a great mix, which kept it fun and lively.

45 REAL WEDDINGS

My grandad made a post box for cards. We loved the personal touch of him making it for us and it was even better than we could have imagined.

For our favours we gave guests personalised sweet cones that were laid out on a handmade sweet cart. We’ve both got a sweet tooth, so it was perfect.

Coulsdon Court did our food. We had graze boards for the day guests and an evening buffet.

We had a magic mirror photo booth with props, which everyone had great fun dressing up for.

Our cake was made by my nan. It was white and finished with glitter and a gorgeous mix of pink and blue flowers cascading down the sides.

Our day was magical from beginning to end. Watching our daughter walk down the aisle with me was something neither of us will forget.

We loved having time out for our photos. Charlie knew I was nervous so he was doing everything he could to make me laugh. I was so giddy and it was definitley a part of the day we won’t forget.

LAUREN AND CHARLIE’S LITTLE WHITE BOOK

We were definitely nervous at the start of the day but as it went on we just felt more and more loved and overjoyed. Everyone involved made us feel so special. It was a day and feeling we’ll never forget.

Your wedmin top tips

Planning

Whenit comes to planning your day, there’s so much to think about but fear not, you’re not in it alone! Make the most of the support from those around you and most importantly, pick the brain of your suppliers. They’re the pros with so much W-day experience and will be happy to share their top tips. With their guidance, you’ll be able to enjoy the pre-wedding run up and more importantly relax on the day knowing you’re in safe hands. Here a selection of local experts share their top tips to get you started…

TRANSPORT

Dany Ridgers, Classic Car Hire

www.ucchire.com

• Plan ahead – classic cars get booked up well in advance (sometimes two years ahead of the day), so be sure to get this one ticked off your list early on.

• View the car in person – Book an appointment to view the car in person before you chose, so you can see for yourself what will arrive on the day rather than just a photo. Some suppliers will let you sit in the vehicles too, which will give you an idea of what space you’ll have inside – important if you’re choosing a traditional princess dress!

• Find an owner, rather than an agent – Lots of clients come to us who’ve booked a car in good faith only to find out the person they have handed their money to doesn’t actually own the car. This means they’re acting as an agent with no real control over what happens on the day. You want that reassurance that the supplier is the owner and cares about the whole experience from start to finish.

• Get your timings right – These old cars need treating gently, so allow extra time to get between locations. If you’re unsure how to plan this, a good supplier will be able to help you out with timings as they know the cars and how fast they can travel.

DOEY DRUMMOND, DOEY DRUMMOND MAKE-UP

www.instagram.com/doeydrummondmakeup

You’ll want your make-up to stay for the duration of your day and here’s how…

• Skin prep – A good canvas will provide the best outcome. I’d recommend starting with a gentle liquid exfoliator to get rid of any unwanted dead skin and create a smoother canvas to work on. Follow with a good moisturiser to keep your skin hydrated, and lastly apply a primer to help your foundation go the distance.

• Stays away from heavy layers – Apply sheer, light layers of makeup, rather than thick, heavy layers. Whilst the latter sounds more long-lasting, you run the risk of caking and getting a build-up of products.

• Powder is a must! – You’ll sweat on the day, so make sure your make-up artist brings out the powder. Using a light dusting of powder in the T-zone, or all over if you have a more oily skin helps to set make-up and takes away shine in the areas you don’t want it.

• The photo shoot – When you visit your venue, plan where the car could be parked for the best photos. Speak to your pro about this too because they might already know the venue and the best spots for the ultimate backdrops.

• Enjoy the ride – The journey to your wedding is a special one and we take great pride in making sure you feel like royalty from the minute our chauffers arrive to the minute they leave later in the day.

• Set your make-up – A good setting spray will help to lock everything in, keeping your products in place and increasing the longevity of your make-up.

• Top up throughout the day – Once your make-up artist has gone you might feel a little lost on how to maintain your look, so don’t be afraid to ask them for their expert advice on how to top up. The main products to top up with are lipstick, setting powder and concealer.

• Opt for waterproof products – Waterproof mascara is always a must with humidity and likely some tears! Waterproof mascara is great for longevity. When it’s warm naturally our eyelids become more oily, so this product’s really beneficial for avoiding smudging and transferring. Gel eyeliners also have great staying power and will likely last through sweat and tears.

• Stay true to yourself – It’s important to feel and look like yourself on your day, so don’t feel like you have to go for layers just to have a look that lasts. If you’re someone that prefers a very light look, stick to that. It just means you may have to reapply a little more frequently throughout the day.

PLANNING SOS 49
SOS

CELEBRANT

Janet Shell, Janet Shell Independent Celebrant www.janetshell.co.uk/celebrancy

When searching for a celebrant it helps to have some clear thinking in mind…

• Imagine your perfect ceremony to start your day. What do you feel from the person leading it? It’s not the words that somebody says that we remember, it’s how we feel when listening to them.

• Have a video call to meet your celebrant to get a feel for how you get along. This person is going to lead the beating heart of the day, so you need to feel comfortable with them.

• Don’t worry if you’re not sure about how the ceremony could look and feel, that’s up for discussion and your celebrant will have lots of ideas and will help steer you through.

• Does your celebrant offer special rituals? Have a think about having those as options within your ceremony. Many people haven’t have seen a handfasting or a sand ceremony and whenever I’ve performed them, they always get positive feedback.

PHOTOGRAPHY

Ryan Cox, Ryan Cox Photography www.ryancoxphotography.com

• Insurance – Check that your photographer has insurance. More venues are asking to see the photographer’s insurance to cover loss, damage or injury to the couples, guests and other service providers should it be the fault of the photographer and or their equipment. I’m insured through a specialist photography insurance company and also a member of a professional association who provide specialist support.

• Equipment – What equipment will your photographer bring and what reserves will they have in case anything stops working? A good pro will have a servicing regime in place to ensure the likelihood of failure on the day won’t happen. I carry two cameras on the day which are annually serviced and a backup camera, as well as various lenses to cover all eventualities along with lighting and backup lighting if required.

• Support from other photographers if they’re unavailable – Are they members of social media groups to get support if required or do they have other photographers they work with who could cover if required?  I have the support of other professional photographers who I’ve either trained or worked with over the years and a regular second shooter should the need arise.

• Backup and storage of the footage – How do they ensure that your images from your special day won’t be lost or damaged and how long do they save them for? All of my cameras use two memory cards and I purchase new ones annually to ensure they’re in good order. My images are backed up on my computer, a separate physical storage device and also in a secure cloud account – no chance they’re going missing!

• Weather – All weddings can be subject to adverse weather

• Flexibility is a great characteristic to have in your celebrant. You’ll get a sense of how adaptable they might be in your initial meeting. Go with your gut.

• Check what’s included in your celebrant costs – for example, I include all travel. It’s my choice to offer that. Each celebrant should be able to break down their costs for you so there’s transparency.

• You’re not looking for a new best friend, but a friendly professional who’s not one of your guests, but a polished and personable lead person for that part of the day, who’s well used to public facing roles. Be sure to look for that professional edge.

• Always meet with four or five celebrants to give yourself a wide choice of personality.

• What’s their voice like? Can you and your guests listen to this person for some time? Have they got expressive/calm/upbeat qualities? The last thing you want is monotonous tone!

• When you’ve selected your celebrant, keep communication channels open. There’ll be lots of alterations and ideas to encompass.

conditions, so make sure there’s a backup plan just in case. Has the photographer worked in bad weather conditions and how will they create beautiful images of your day? My cameras and lenses are weather sealed and apart from a sandstorm I’ve shot in all weather conditions over my 25 years of wedding photography.

• Travel – How do they get to your wedding and do they have other options if their transport fails? I’ll be in the area of the wedding at least one hour before the agreed time or if needed stay locally the night before. I also have a backup car and will use public transport if this is a viable option for me.

• Venue restrictions – Does your chosen venue have restrictions on what, where and when the photographs can be taken? Some historic venues will only allow certain rooms to be used for photography and some churches will have restrictions on the photography too. Be sure to this with your photographer so there are no surprises on the day.

ENTERTAINMENT – DANCE LESSONS

Here are some great tips for keeping you fit, healthy and having fun in the run up to your big day…

• Walk outside – after going through some wedding admin (that table seating plan will still be there when you get back), throw on some trainers, grab the keys, a water bottle and go for a stroll outside. Slow the walk right down and breathe in. By slowing down and drawing the mind to something it hasn’t seen before it’ll help calm your mind and body.

How often: Daily

• Put on the music and dance – we’re super biased but we love music and it’s so great to put on your favourite tracks (the cheesier the better), and get the body moving. Sway those hips, throw some shapes and feel good as the dance endorphins kick in. You’ll be glowing in no time and a bit of cardio helps a lot! Especially for a busy wedding day. Keep those fitness levels up.

How often: Twice a week.

• Work it – get strong and get to the gym to pump or even at home with some cans or small weights. A balanced work out mixing cardio and strength work will help your overall fitness and stamina for the month going into your big-day countdown. The pay off? Enjoying the whole wedding breakfast and cake!

How often: Twice a week.

HAIR AND MAKE-UP

Tan

• If you’re considering a spray tan, be sure to have a trial beforehand to ensure it’s flawless on the day. Book your tan appointment two to three days before your wedding to give it time to develop.

• Think about what depth of colour you’d like to be and talk that through with your specialist.

• After your tan’s developed, wear white so you can see how your tan will look with your dress.

• Think about the neckline you’re wearing a few weeks before the wedding and if you might get tan lines that clash with your dress.

Hair

• Get a trim two to four weeks before your day. Fresh ends will make your hair look polished in photos.

• For extra length and volume, consider clip-in or tape-in hair extensions. Applied properly, no one will ever know and it may give you more options for your style choice.

Beauty and make-up

• Begin a skincare routine at least six months before the special day to give your products time to work their magic.

• Book a monthly facial. Gentle exfoliants refine pores, brightening masks can fade sunspots and age spots, and hydrating serums will plump skin.

• Be consistent with your skincare routine, morning and night.

• The weeks before the wedding can be stressful. Set aside five minutes each day to do guided breathing exercises. Stress can play havoc with our skin, from eczema, breakout and rashes.

• Practice your first dance – clear away the table and chairs, make sure the cat or dog or children are out of the way and make it a date night with a difference. Put on your first dance song and get dancing! We love to work with our couples to create your first dance reoutine – one that’s fun and easy to learn but with extra wow factor!

How often: Start three months before.

• Live, laugh, love – remember that thriving with your love is the best thing ever so find space to connect with each other, like when you dance together and have a giggle because that’s what makes it fun. How often: Every day!

GEMMA WIGHTMAN, GEMMA WIGHTMAN CERAMICS

www.gemmawightmanceramics.com

Tell us about your company...

Gemma Wightman Ceramics, founded by me Gemma in 2004, is a ceramics studio that specialises in creating beautifully hand-thrown porcelain tableware. A defining characteristic of my brand is the focus on creating functional pieces that are quirky, bespoke, and visually striking. I offer a range of wedding gifts. From a full dinner service to start your new chapter together or a flower jug to adorn your home, to personalised mugs, or a customisable vase printed with your vows, I have a wealth of choices available.

What’s your most popular product?

Mugs have emerged as the most popular product. With a diverse range of designs, I offer mugs that cater to various tastes and occasions, making them a versatile and cherished item. One category that stands out is my collection of positive message mugs. These mugs feature uplifting and inspirational quotes or affirmations, designed to bring a smile to the face and brighten the day.

Why do you love what you do?

One of the aspects of my work that I cherish the most is the challenge of

developing new pieces. It’s an exciting journey where I get to push my boundaries and bring fresh ideas to life. Seeing the joy on customers’ faces when they connect with my creations brings me a tremendous sense of achievement and purpose. The greatest gift of all is being able to work with clay all day. It’s not just a job for me; it’s a passion.

Why should couples choose local suppliers for their wedding? You’ll benefit from a more personalised service with local suppliers being so attentive. You’ll also help to promote sustainability by minimising the environmental impact associated with long-distance shipping and transportation.

What’s your signature style?

I’ve developed a signature style that embraces and celebrates the inherent qualities of the porcelain clay I use. Porcelain clay possesses a remarkable fluidity, and I have found a way to harness this characteristic to create pieces that exude grace and fluidity in their form. I aim to create pieces that are not only visually pleasing but also evoke a sense of connection and engagement. The combination of elegant curves and tactile surfaces invites the user to experience the piece beyond its visual beauty, encouraging a deeper connection with the object itself so that it is one of my mugs that your hand magnetically reaches for in the cupboard every morning for that first delectable cup of coffee!

Whether you have designs in mind or starting with a blank canvas, the possibilities for stationery are endless.

What’s your most popular product?

My most popular product is bespoke invitations, which bring me so much joy to create and design. I absolutely love taking a concept and expanding on it to create one-of-a-kind invitations for my clients. There really is no greater joy than packing them up and seeing clients’ faces and responses when they receive them.

Why do you love what you do?

I’m very passionate about helping couples realise their special day through stationery and love taking them on a journey from concept to ceremony. My aim is to create a seamless and stress-free experience in creating and organising your stationery, providing an end-to-end service for couples.

Why should couples choose local suppliers for their wedding?

Choosing local suppliers for your weddings is a fantastic idea as many suppliers work closely with their local venues and have a great

knowledge of the area. Often, I work alongside other suppliers to create a seamless and consistent package for couples. Additionally, working with local suppliers enables couples to have face-to-face consultations, which I find really helps me understand the client and bring their stationery to life.

What’s your signature style?

My signature style and what I pride myself on would have to be my handwritten calligraphy! This allows me to create a completely bespoke flair to the calligraphy, bringing that extra special touch to your stationery.

Being Sophie

Sophie Stonehouse on body positivity, self-love and flawless skin

Social media sensation Sophie Stonehouse, is perhaps best known for her appearance on the fourth series of Netflix’s reality dating show, Too Hot To Handle. Hailing from Brighton, she was the only British cast member and made her mark as the group of risqué singletons were put to the test of abstinence in order to keep their prize money high and stay in with a chance of winning it. Since leaving the villa, she has dedicated her time to producing fashion and style content for her social media followers, now numbering in their hundreds of thousands. Lesser known however are her struggles with body dysmorphia and her fight to achieve body positivity. Being the centre of attention on their wedding day, isn’t every couple’s dream with issues such as Sophie’s becoming more prevalent, and importantly more commonly discussed. So, CWM’s beauty and wellness editor, Kelly Andrews, caught up with Sophie to find out how she overcame these personal challenges, as well as discovering her top health and wellbeing tips.

What will you take away from your time on Too Hot To Handle?

The experience really taught me about self-love and respect. It also taught me that the most incredible experiences in life, happen when you least expect it. I feel very lucky to have had the opportunity to go on the show.

What have you been up to since you left the show?

I’ve completely transformed my career to become a full-time content creator. It’s a job I’ve always wanted to do. It’s definitely not an easy one, but it’s very fulfilling. I’ve also found a new relationship since leaving the show, and I’m very happy.

You seem very at home in your own body. How did you find this confidence?

Body confidence is something I’ve definitely struggled with, and I’m definitely a victim of body dysmorphia. But, I found the confidence to be at home in my own body, when I realised that I was never truly going to be happy with it. I noticed that I was always finding something to complain about whether I was overweight or underweight. Once I learned to accept myself, only then did I truly feel at home.

Are you able to tell us a bit about your battle with body dysmorphia and coming out the other side?

I’ve suffered badly with it over the past couple years. Since being

74

a young adult, my weight has fluctuated year after year, and when I turned 18, I put on quite a bit. Then, as the first Covid lockdown hit I fell in love with fitness and completely transformed my life and body. However, that did come with its own disadvantages. I became obsessed with it all and would really get down on myself when I didn’t work out or eat right. Ultimately though, it taught me that no matter where I am with my body, I’m always going to want to change something whether I’m in perfect shape or not. I feel that now I have a happy balance and have accepted myself the way I am. I know that I want to look good, but I also want to enjoy my fried chicken burger, fries and a gallon of mayo without feeling bad!

How do you want to encourage and inspire women to discover their own self-love?

I think it’s important to remember that no one really cares. That’s what I learnt after suffering with pretty bad acne. I thought everyone was looking at me and the reality was that they just weren’t. As soon as you start putting yourself outside of your comfort zone, your confidence will grow. Another big one: don’t be mean to yourself, give yourself a break.

Wedding dress shopping can be a stressful time for those with worries about certain aspects of their body. What should they be looking for to feel more confident on the big day?

I think it’s so important to leave any expectations at the door. Go into the shopping experience with an open mind and a clean canvas. I’d be looking for something I feel comfortable and myself in. I think it’s important to remember that most people aren’t completely happy with themselves, and that’s okay. Go with what feels right and remember: on the day you really won’t care about the little things.

For many, their wedding day is the first time a couple will find themselves the centre of attention with all eyes on them. Some may find this uncomfortable, particularly if they’re feeling self conscious about their body. What advice would you have for them?

As long as you’ve made the day enjoyable for yourself as well as your guests, you’ll get lost in the experience. I think a lot of couples get caught up in making the experience great for their guests, but forget about their own wants and needs. I think it’s important to have fun with the

whole thing, don’t do anything or wear anything that makes you feel uncomfortable or not yourself. This is your day to shine. If you don’t like wearing a high heel and it isn’t for you, then don’t! Make the day perfect for you and throw on those trainers.

What does a typical day look like for you?

My typical day at the moment starts with a dog walk and a coffee. I live next to a canal, so I walk my dog there every morning. I then get back and make myself some breakfast and start my working day. After work I’ll try to walk him again before heading home to make dinner and relax. At this point in my life, it’s all about career and I’m happy with that.

Your skin is flawless! Tell us about your daily skincare routine. Surprisingly I don’t do a lot! I have very sensitive skin, so I like to keep it minimal. My go-to everyday skincare routine consists of my Garnier Micellar Water on a cotton pad, which I use to clean my face and remove all make-up. I follow that with Simple’s Replenishing Rich Moisturiser and Eye Cream. It’s really just that simple… less is more!

Are there any products you’d recommend to a nearlywed looking to get their skin in top condition for the big day?

I’d highly recommend GlamGlow’s face masks. They’re incredible and will help to get your skin looking perfect for the big day. For those suffering with acne, my top tip is: stop touching your face! I’m a picker and once I stopped it went away, very quickly.

What make-up products can’t you live without?

Cream contours and eyebrow gel!

What’s next for Sophie Stonehouse?

At the moment I’m working towards growing my platform. We have some exciting things in the pipeline for this year so you’ll just have to wait and see!

NATURAL BEAUTY

Q&A Beauty

Look the best version of you with our expert advice

I don’t usually wear much makeup, so I’m worried about hiring a pro and the finished look being too much. What would you advise?

Take the time to look at the make-up artist’s signature style. Bridal makeup doesn’t need to be plastered on; it should be about defining and highlighting your natural beauty, so you still feel like you.

Have a conversation before booking and consider whether that make-up artist makes you feel comfortable. Being around people who put you at ease and make you feel good is essential on your wedding morning. At a trial, I like to sit with the bride over a cuppa to talk about what they like, don’t like, what makeup they wear every day and on a night out and what they want from their bigday look, before I even pick up a brush.

If you don’t wear much make-up usually and feel nervous, hiring a professional will mean you have a great complexion and the right colour palette, all while looking fresh and natural.

For reassurance, I wanted to share a comment that one of my brides sent to me after an unhappy trial with someone else: “From the moment I walked through your door you made me feel at ease and understood what I wanted. I don’t think you know how much you’ve boosted my self-confidence! I didn’t even feel like I was wearing any make-up.”

LIFT OFF

My long hair is generally quite flat and lifeless, but I love the idea of wearing my hair down on my wedding day. What can I do to give it more volume?

Celebrity hairstylist Michael Douglas says: One of the easiest ways is to get some layers put in it. This way, you take weight out of the hair but keep the length while creating body. Having a fringe put in is also a great way of achieving more volume.

Blow-drying your hair properly is a good idea. Dry using a small, round brush and dry from roots upwards.

Dry shampoos and texturising sprays are good at supporting volume. You can use it throughout the day, so if you feel your hair getting a bit flat, just flip your head forward and spray it in at the roots. Another good idea is adding waves. If you put a curling tong through sections of your hair it creates push against other sections and that in turn creates volume. But if you don’t put enough wave in at the roots the hair sits a bit flat, so make sure you concentrate the tongs at the root, which is where you want the lift.

CARE FOR YOUR HAIR

We’re getting married just after summer so I’m worried that my hair won’t be in the best condition after all the sun, sea and sand. Help! With proper care and a little extra attention, you can make sure that your hair looks its best on your day. Here are some tips:

•Sun protection: Shield your hair from excessive sun exposure by wearing hats, scarves, or using UV protection sprays.

•Hydration: Sun and saltwater can dry out your hair. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water and use a moisturising shampoo and conditioner to replenish lost moisture.

•Rinse thoroughly: After swimming in the sea, rinse your hair with clean water to remove salt and sand.

•Deep conditioning treatments: Treat your hair to regular treatments to restore moisture and nourish your locks. Look for products with ingredients like argan oil, coconut oil, or shea butter.

•Trim split ends: Schedule regular trims to keep your hair looking healthy. This will also prevent further splitting and breakage.

•Heat styling: Minimise the use of tools such as curling irons and straighteners, as they can further damage your hair. If you must use them, apply a heat protector spray beforehand.

•Protective hairstyles: Wear hairstyles such as braids, buns, or updos during the summer to help shield your hair from environmental damage and reduce tangling.

•Eat a balanced diet: Nourish your hair from within by eating a balanced diet rich in vitamins, minerals, and proteins. Include foods like fish, nuts, fruits, vegetables, and whole grains to promote healthy hair growth.

If you’re concerned about the condition of your hair closer to your wedding date, consider consulting a professional stylist. They can suggest personalised treatments or recommend products to help you achieve your desired look. Remember to start implementing these tips well in advance of your wedding to give your hair sufficient time to recover and regain its vitality. With proper care, your hair will be ready to shine on your big day.

Our local pros answer your big-day woes

BIG-DAY SHOOT

My partner’s extremely camera shy so I’m worried about our photos not looking natural. What advice can you share and how can you help with that on the day?

My advice would be to hire a photographer that’s fun and that has great people skills. I’d certainly suggest to meet your photographer a few times before the big day to form a relationship and get to know each other and to also discuss your thoughts and expectations. You could even plan an engagement shoot to get used to being in front of the camera beforehand.

BEAUTIFUL BLOOMS

Our venue’s a blank canvas so we can add our own styling, but we’re not sure where to start. Can you give us any décor tips to create the perfect summer backdrop?

Many venues have lovely outside areas with greenery and flowers in the summer so there are a few tips to try and bring that summer garden feel into the venue.

•Arches and hoops – decorated with greenery and flowers create a wonderful focal point. These can be used at an entrance, behind a top table or as a photo backdrop. At many venues they can be moved from the ceremony to the reception depending on the height of the doors. I usually use a mixture of high-quality artificial garlands and fresh greenery to keep them cost effective.

•Pedestal flowers – These can be used for the ceremony and then moved to any location within the venue. They immediately create an impact and are a fantastic way to create that summer feeling.

•Pew Ends – A posy of fresh greenery or faux flowers on the ceremony chairs or church pews is a very pretty touch, especially if

It’s important to remember that the best photos come from the natural moments, that aren’t staged or posed. A good photographer will disappear into the background so you’ll forget they’re even there snapping away!

If you do feel nervous about the camera pointing in your direction, try and have a joke or a laugh with your partner, take a deep breath, relax, forget what’s going on around you and simply be you!

scented flowers are used such as lavender.

•Staircases, mantlepieces, columns, beams – Using greenery décor on features within your venue is a great way to soften the look and add a garden type feeling.

•Bouquets – Opt for stunning country-style bouquets with lots of classic summer Roses, scented freesias, bubbly Gypsophilia and wild greenery. After your ceremony these can be used around the venue. The bridal bouquet looks fab on the cake table and bridesmaid’s bouquets can be put on the top table or gift table or bar.

•Table centres – Tall vases brimming with a selection of seasonal flowers and greenery immediately create a wow factor when you walk into a room. They decorate the venue as well as the tables and in summer there are so many wonderful blooms.

•Ceremony and top table flower arrangement – Packed full of flowers with greenery flowing down the front of the table look amazing and you can rese them later on in the centre of the buffet table

SEASONAL SHOWSTOPPER

I’d love our cake to be an absolute showstopper. How can we inject a splash of seasonal colour into its design?

A splash of colour can add a lot of personality to your cake. Floral designs will always be on trend and can match many big-day styles and colour themes. Some fresh flowers are toxic so I’d advise to use sugar flowers for that wow-factor and to add dimension, texture, and colour in a completely safe way to avoid cross-contamination. Sugar florals are perfect for both classic elegant and contemporary designs and give you the option of having any colour and at any time of the year.

Vibrant pops of yellow and green are perfect for a fresh spring look along with graceful tulips, romantic peonies and delicate sweet peas. For a summer wedding, think of soft pink and blue tones such as, garden roses, fluffy hydrangeas, beautiful clusters of delphiniums, and scabious. Flaming reds, oranges and brown are perfect for autumn, adding deep tone roses, beautiful dahlias and physalis alkekengi (Chinese lanterns) to get the autumn warmth. For the colder months go for

SUMMER STYLE

We’re getting married at the peak of summer, so I don’t want my dress to feel too heavy and hot. What collections are ideal for this time of the year and why?

Here at May & Grace we have a gorgeous range of princess style A-line wedding dresses perfect for a summer wedding. Floaty skirts in tulle, silk organza and silk muslin are dreamy and light allowing any bride to feel comfortable and cool on the big day. We also love cut-out details, spaghetti straps and low back detailing for a hot summer’s day.

white with metallic touches. Large white roses, gerbera daisies, hellebores, ranunculas, astilbe and thistles all make a wonderful base for a winter floral display.

The cake itself can be neutral in colour and the sugar flowers will add a bright splash. Go for super-bold sugar flowers and complement the wedding cake table display with natural blooms for the finishing touch.

New for 2024, we have Kiva, Christie and Eulene, by Rosa Clara, Rosa Clara Couture and Aire Atelier. Kiva by Rosa Clara is crafted in embellished tulle and features a v-neckline, round keyhole back and a side split. Christie by Rosa Clara Couture is made of silk muslin, a soft fabric that caresses the skin and is suitable for a beach wedding. Eulene by Aire Atelier is a painted ballgown in the lightest silk organza fabric, with a bold cut-out open back and square neckline.

Grooms editor Melissa Cullen reveals the latest best buys and product launches

The international best-selling Orient Bambino Watch Series now includes a long-awaited 38mm diameter case perfect for grooms-to-be.

The Classic and Simple Style Series, known as Orient Bambino by dedicated fans, features traditional design features such as a convex dial and domed glass. The series has been a consistent best-seller over the last decade in 70 countries around the world. Until now, they featured mostly 40.5-mm case diameters, however, these latest models feature a more compact 38-mm case.

The beautiful finish can be admired through the see-through back, and the domed glass and convex dial create a vintage feel. The dial is available in beige as well as black and white, which complements the simple design perfectly.

Groomed Mobile Barbers have seen a rise in bookings for home haircuts and beard trims for weddings. Able to set up anywhere, Groomed Mobile Barbers bring with them everything needed to ensure your hair is styled, beard is trimmed and shave is perfectly smooth.

Owner Giuliano Dore tells us: “In many cultures, the bride gathers with her bridesmaids to have her make-up and hair done just before the wedding, but in the past, men simply queued at their local barber shop waiting for their turn. Now, everyone wants to have memorable photos, look their best and make more of the morning preparations. I advise grooms-to-be to consult with a barber about the style that they want before the wedding. A dramatic change may not be the most sensible thing to do just before you say your vows. Have a restyle a month or two before so that your wedding cut is just a tidy up and there are no shocks on the day.”

Dressed TO IMPRESS

The team at Colour Me Beautiful share their fashion advice for the groom-to-be

Choosing the right outfit for your special day will come down to a variety of factors: the style of wedding you’re having, the venue, the time of year and, of course, what your partner is wearing. To help you find the perfect look, we’ve asked Cliff Bashforth, the MD of Colour Me Beautiful, to share his top styling tips:

CHOOSING A STYLE

There are different styles of formal attire available for men, some of which are more traditional than others.

Morning dress: This is the most formal suit worn during the day and works well for all body shapes and sizes.

Tuxedo: A formal look typically used for evening receptions, tuxedos can be either single or double-breasted, and for a less formal look you have the option of adding a coloured tie and waistcoat or cummerbund.

Frock coat: A popular addition to the wedding scene, the frock coat can be made from luxury fabrics such as brocade or velvet. It’s best suited for average to tall, inverted triangle and rectangle body shapes, but can be worn with a waistcoat.

Lounge suit: This is a relaxed formal wear and is suitable for any time of day. If you aren’t used to wearing a suit during the day, this might be the most comfortable option. Choose fabrics carefully: a crisper fabric for an inverted triangle, lightweight for a rectangle and a softer, woven fabric such as lightweight flannel for a round body shape.

Alternatives: If a uniform is part of your life, you may want to wear a formal version of it for your wedding. The same applies if you have traditional dress, religious or otherwise. For an informal wedding, you may want to wear a lounge suit, with or without a tie.

HIRING

Don’t hesitate to hire the men’s attire, but make sure that you have tried your suit on in advance

and that the sleeve lengths are correct, and the trousers fit properly.

Whether you want the best man, fathers, and ushers to wear the same as the groom is entirely a personal choice. However, the best man usually wears the same style of suit as the groom. What the other men in the bridal party wear often depends on the formality of the wedding. If you choose to have a page boy or ring bearer, make sure that he’s comfortable in what he wears to avoid any last-minute tantrums.

ACCESSORIES

The way the men in the bridal party wear the various accessories that complete their outfit is important, and you will want to make sure they get it right. This is where you can co-ordinate or contrast colours and demonstrate some of your personality.

Shirts, ties, and cufflinks: The choice of shirt will depend on the neckwear. For example, a tie requires a standard shirt and collar, a self-tie cravat can be worn with a standard or wing collar, a cravat needs a wing collar to go with it and if you’ve decided to go for a bow tie, team it with a standard or wing collar. Whatever the type of neckwear, it should be made from silk so it falls well.

Cufflinks are only worn with a shirt that has double fold back cuffs. Beware of choosing jokey inappropriate cufflinks for a formal wedding.

Waistcoats: You can choose a waistcoat in the same colour as your jacket or a contrasting one. Consider wearing something different from the rest of the men to help you stand out and make your own fashion statement. As with any waistcoat, always leave the lowest button open.

Cummerbunds, belts and braces: A cummerbund can be worn with a black tie or tuxedo and is great for tidying up the waistline and disguising a rounded stomach.

A cummerbund should always be teamed with a bow tie, and you can have fun choosing suitable colours for both.

If the suit trousers have loops, these call for a belt (and certainly no braces), but if these are unable to be altered to fit for the occasion and there are no belt loops, braces will be needed. Under no circumstances should these be worn together!

Shoes and socks: Black shoes should be highly polished and not scuffed; black patent can be worn with black tie. Make sure any labels on the soles are removed before wearing them.

Socks should be worn in plain, dark colours and made from wool, cotton, or silk. Avoid man-made fibres to prevent discomfort. They should be long enough to cover your lower calf.   Boutonnière or buttonholes: A boutonnière is a small flower arrangement placed in the buttonhole. Your boutonnière should match the flowers or colours used throughout the rest of the wedding.

Boutonnières for the rest of the men in the wedding party should be the same style or colour as yours, but not exactly the same in other respects. Double check that the stem of the boutonnière is securely pinned to the lapel.

GROOMING

Make sure you’ve booked a haircut for the photographs. If you have heavy brows, they should be controlled – you may need to get your tweezers out! It goes without saying that shaving or beard trimming must be attended to at the appropriate time prior to the ceremony. Your hands will also be on display on the day, so treat yourself to a manicure the day before the wedding or do it yourself if you have the time.

Dream Island Wedding

MY EVERYTHINGMy first, my last,

Located in the South Ari Atoll, renowned for its marine life and coral gardens, the resort is spread over two islands: one, the blissfully peaceful adult only island; the other slightly more buzzy, welcoming families; both stunningly beautiful and connected via a 500m wooden bridge – the first of its kind in the Maldives! Getting there couldn’t be easier with BA flying direct from London Heathrow! Once you land in Malé, you can rest in the Conrad Lounge to cool off with a refreshing juice, bite to eat and even a shower if you so wish before you embark on your seaplane for a 30-minute breathtaking flight to your home for the duration of your honeymoon. And home it is. The resort’s friendliness is not to be taken for granted, expect warm smiles, relaxed vibes and no stuffiness often associated with such glamorous resorts.

AN ISLAND OF FIRSTS!

Conrad Maldives Rangali Island boasts the nation’s first underground wine cellar, first below sea level bedroom in The Muraka (with the first underwater elevator in the Maldives!), first dedicated cheese bar and the first to open an authentic Chinese restaurant in the Maldives, Ufaa – to name a few of its innovations. It’s only right to be the first destination to experience as a married couple. Goosebumps, right?

A ROOM WITH A VIEW

I was fortunate to stay in one of the sunset water villas complete with a private plunge infinity pool allowing you to watch the sky turn from the brightest blue to blazon orange with a glass of bubbles in hand. Utter indulgence. If staying over the water is not your thing, the opposing side of the island offers fabulously chic beach villas with private pool just steps away from the turquoise waters that you’ve only ever seen on postcards.

UNDERWATER LIFE

Maldives offers worldclass snorkelling and diving opportunities. On the Rangali Island’s house reef, I was lucky enough to spot a manta ray, baby black fin sharks, who have kept to the shallows to learn to feed and grow, parrot fish, turtles, reef sharks and shoals of colourful fish imitating a scene

Rachel Westall experienced five-star, desert island luxury at Conrad Maldives Rangali Island

from Finding Nemo! If this isn’t enough, the resort offers an excellent range of water sports and boasts a PADI 5* dive centre. I was lucky enough to enjoy a champagne sunset cruise where we viewed joyful spinner dolphins playing gleefully in the waves; as well as our search for the magnificent whale shark which, like us, enjoys bathing in these warm, tropical waters.

indulged in a 90-minute session entitled Mindful Bliss. Watching the fish beneath through the glass-bottomed treatment room, my therapist began the ritual to restore harmony and balance. She started with the most fabulous back massage, followed by a mini facial using clear quartz crystal wands and finished with the entrancing effect of fragrant coconut oil being gently poured on my forehead and hairline (often known as your Third-Eye Chakra). My hair has never felt so nourished following this invigorating hair and scalp massage.

A FOODIES’ PARADISE

Foodies are in for a treat with 12 restaurants to sample. Wake up to room service or enjoy breakfast at Vilu, the à la carte establishment offering dishes from smashed avocado with sourdough to eggs benedict to sensational pancakes for those with a sweet tooth, or head over to the very relaxed Atoll Market, the resort’s only buffet restaurant. Here you can sample many international cuisines, everything from sushi to freshlymade omelettes and help yourself to a smoothie pressed-to-order or a fruit platter from the cold room.

Another first, dine below deck at fine-dining restaurant, Ithaa. Here, I was lucky enough to enjoy a set menu which consisted of silky dill-infused salmon, foie gras torchon, and miso and truffle marinated black cod fillet, all beautifully paired with a sensational Sauvignon Blanc – all this whilst watching reef sharks gliding past the surrounding glass walls. As well as these choices, there’s Ufaa by Jereme Leung, where you can sample handmade noodles and dim sum; and the island’s health restaurant, Mandhoo – expect freshly caught seafood, lobster and fragrant flavours aplenty.

FEEL-GOOD TRAVEL

Eco-conscious travel is all the rage and Conrad Maldives Rangali Island is certainly getting involved in the promise to go green. You’d be hard pushed to find a single-use plastic in the resort as bamboo options (even your key card) are being introduced at every opportunity. Furthermore, and I was so excited to be a part of this, in 2017 the resort launched a coral regeneration programme, which aims to protect the surrounding reefs. With a complex eco-system and more than 10,000 species in the Maldives, the programme includes a coral nursery and a coral adoption programme for guests to partake in. The super-friendly dive team and I took to the waters to replant baby coral to flourish in their new home and hopefully thrive and grow. In six months’ time they’ll update me on my coral’s progress! Watch this space...

TRUE ROMANCE

It’s safe to say the staff at Conrad Maldives Rangali Island will do everything to make your stay one to remember whether you’d like to experience private dining beneath the stars on your veranda listening to the sea lap around your stilted accommodation; or a private beach dinner, just you, your love and the powder white sand beneath your feet. For total relaxation, a visit to one of the island’s two spas is a must. I

ONCE IN A LIFETIME

Bond. The name’s Bond. No this isn’t a new film location of an upcoming James Bond movie, it’s The Muraka - a first-of-its-kind, luxury two-level residence with a master bedroom submerged some 16ft below sea level in the Indian Ocean. If money’s no problem, then honeymoon like Paris Hilton and go for it!

There’s so much more to say, but I’ll leave you to find out the rest for yourselves. Do indulge, it’s worth it. To book, visit the website: www.conradmaldives.com

HONEYMOON REVIEW 93

HAVEN A Celtic

Peace and tranquillity awaits honeymooners at Galgorm in Northern Ireland

WhileNorthern Ireland might not be the first place you think of when planning a mini-moon, having spent two nights at the incredible Galgorm Resort near Ballymena, CWM deputy managing editor Kelly Andrews is here to change that!

Northern Ireland’s premier luxury hotel and spa, located just 30 minutes from Belfast, offers the ultimate haven of relaxation. Set within 380 acres of parkland with the sometimes rushing, sometimes babbling River Maine running through it, Galgorm’s enviable location truly provides an escape from the real world.

A SPOT OF R&R

The jewel in Galgorm’s crown is the Thermal Spa Village, which I’d go so far as to say is unique, as I can honestly say I’ve never encountered its like. So vast is it that you need a map to orientate yourself! It’s fortunate indeed then that it has it’s own app containing just that, plus all the info you could possibly need during your stay. My accommodation was a mere two-minute walk to the entrance, so I was up bright and early, donned the robe and flip flops provided, and was off to investigate. Despite the flight from Stansted the previous day being one of the most stressful in recent memory, I could already feel the tension melt away as I strolled alongside the River nodding a cheerful, “good morning,” to fellow guests as I went.

If your experience of a spa is a pool, Jacuzzi, steam room and a sauna, maybe a hot tub if you’re really lucky, you’ll be swept off your feet by the Thermal Village! Mainly based in the open air it features a Wonderland of treats to explore and experience around every corner. I happened upon the Riverside Garden first; home to outdoor pools, hot tubs, The Salt Cave, a cafe and the Celtic Sauna. In some of the Resort’s packages you’ll receive a complementary 10-minute Celtic Sauna Infusion here, which was the case with my shepherd’s hut accommodation. So naturally, I wasted no time!

We were shown into the sauna by our sauna master, where I was pleasantly surprised to find a floor-to-ceiling window along one side acting as a frame for the stunning, tranquil landscape beyond. It occurred to me that what this place does so well is allow nature to do its thing in providing all the beauty and relaxation anyone could wish for. The landscape is part of the experience, not just a mere sideline, but I digress...

This treatment is a traditional Aufghuss ceremony consisting of three balls of ice being thrown onto hot coals, each one containing essential oils to benefit the body in a different way (breathing, circulation and skin) with each temperature more intense than the last. The air was circulated by the sauna master who used a towel to push the aromas towards us in the mesmerising, dance-like movements characteristic of the ceremony. As Celtic music played softly in the background, it was easy to drift away. When the ritual was over, we were escorted to the firepit area, where we were served a cool and refreshing watermelon punch to bring the body temperature back down.

As I continued my explorations, I came across The Walled Garden and couldn’t resist stopping for a cocktail in The Palm House, where I was able to recline and take in the views of the beautifully manicured gardens. Soon though, it was time for my private Riverside Bathing Experience. From reception, charming host Kenneth showed me the way to Birch, my very own secluded hot tub for the hour. The water is heated by log burner to 39 degrees, and the comforting smell of the wood burning only adds to the experience. A glass of prosecco waited for me and I was able to order more drinks using the QR code provided, which would be served tubside. All of my senses were engaged as I listened to the calming music and the sounds of the flowing river, sipped on my prosecco, enjoyed the smell of the wood smoke, and felt the warm water relax my muscles – this was the life!

The Thermal Village is actually open until 9pm, but by 6pm it was

time for me to reluctantly head back to the hut to get ready for dinner. I procrastinated all the way though, stopping en route for one last visit to my beloved River House (with its infared beds and views of the cascading River), a hot chocolate enjoyed on the riverside boardwalk, and a spell in The Alpine Garden’s vitality pool.

HEARTY FARE

The foodies amongst you will be equally as delighted by Galgorm as the spa aficionados since there are no fewer than three restaurants to choose from for dinner: Fratelli Ristorante, Gillies Grill and Castle Kitchen + Bar (the latter just a short transfer away). That’s not even counting the other options for afternoon tea in The Conservatory, where you can also find the Cocktail Bar & Gin Library, and McKendry’s, all up at the main house.

This was my first visit to Northern Ireland and I found the people to be some of the friendliest I’ve ever encountered while travelling. We honestly felt like we were among friends, and the staff at Galgorm can’t do enough for their guests. We didn’t have to make the walk from our shepherd’s hut to Gillies Grill once as we simply dialled reception and a short while later a thoroughly charming member of staff would be there to collect us, which was most appreciated, particularly when it rained.

Gillies Grill is reportedly a favourite amongst guests and locals alike, and it’s not difficult to see why. With a warm informal atmosphere, and hunting lodge vibes, it offers a menu sure to delight any palate. Interestingly, the menus for all of the eateries at the Resort are accessed via QR code, so you can peruse at leisure on your phone. No doubt developed during the pandemic, it helps to keep everyone safe, but is also kind to the environment cutting down on paper.

I opted for the barbecue pork bites, followed by the braised brisket of beef for main, finished off with a selection of delicious Irish cheeses. After thanking our super-sweet and helpful server, we made our way through to the adjoining McKendry’s. With a traditional Irish pub vibe, it’s also the Resort’s exclusive whiskey bar, offering an impressive collection of 300plus varieties from more than 21 countries. Here, we happily let our dinner go down while sipping on another cocktail and listening to the live music.

When it comes to culinary highlights, for me, it was breakfast. I’ll admit to being like a kid in a sweetshop! The spread was a joyous sight to behold with everything you could possibly dream of for the most important meal of the day from muffins and pastries; fish, cold meats and cheeses; cereals and fruit; to pancakes, full Irish breakfast, waffles and toast. Self control was most definitely needed!

HOME AWAY FROM HOME

Opened as a bed and breakfast more than 30 years ago, Galgorm has grown into the immense site it is today with 125 luxurious guestrooms, including 48 deluxe rooms, Junior and Signature suites, along with a range of more out-of-the-ordinary accommodation such as log cabins, cottage suites, shepherd’s huts and exclusive residences perfect for groups. But it hasn’t stopped there as it’s still growing with works currently underway and more in the pipeline. Even as I visited, work on a group of two storey cottages was nearing completion and land was about to be cleared for the new treehouse accommodation.

I was happily ensconced in one of the Resort’s shepherd’s huts during my stay. Welcomed by an electric woodburner cosily heating this home away from home, we quickly discovered all the comforts we could wish for were provided. I was obsessed with the huge outdoor copper bath, which I made a dive for as soon as I’d dumped my bags. The complimentary G&T and bath bomb, were much appreciated additions following the aforementioned airport hell.

For honeymooners though, there are two particular showstoppers that I would highly recommend! If you’re looking for ultimate luxury, Suite 1857 can be found in the original manor house and offers unrivalled views of the River from its Juliet balcony. Elegant and romantic, its rooms are decorated in brocade wall coverings in a muted palette, antique lighting, and French Baroque-style furniture, with solid oak floors and beams. It features a lounge area with sofa and two arm chairs for curling up in front of the TV, plus bathroom with free-standing bath and walk-in shower.

If a secluded, rustic, woodland escape is more your vibe the Shepherd’s Hut Suite is the place for you. Nestled in Galgorm Wood with the cascading River running alongside it, it’s luxuriously appointed with a lounge, mini kitchen, and bathroom with shower room and free-standing bath. But the stand-out features, without doubt, are your very own sauna and hot tub on the terrace. Enjoy a soak in the warm waters as you watch the sun set and raise a glass to yourselves, the newlyweds.

Nestled in 72 acres of tranquil parkland in the Staffordshire countryside, Moddershall Oaks Country Spa Retreat is a luxurious property with lavish suites, spa facilities, lakeside dining and a wellness centre. The retreat offers a private location surrounded by unspoilt views of the rolling countryside, setting the perfect scene for romantic minimoons and getaways.

I felt a calming oasis as soon as I ventured onto Moddershall Oaks’ winding driveway. With the sun beaming down on me, I quickly left the outside world behind. The next thing I knew, I was enjoying an elderflower spritz while chatting to the attentive and friendly staff who were on hand throughout my entire stay.

REST YOUR HEAD

With only 10 suites on-site, I was excited to see my accommodation, and I wasn’t disappointed when I entered the modern space. Complete with air-conditioning, a seating area with plush furnishings, a private terrace, a smart TV, a desk, and a stylish bathroom with a rainfall shower; it had all the amenities needed for a tranquil stay.

All overnight guests can book a private 30-minute session in the outdoor hot tub. I went for a late night dip, so I could enjoy the sun setting and view the beautiful stars. The water was the perfect temperature, with water jets and warm lighting to add to the oh-so-romantic atmosphere.

When it was time to rest my head, I quickly entered dreamland thanks to the comfortable king-sized bed and fluffy pillows.

THE ULTIMATE SPA SESSION

Moddershall Oaks is more than just a spa; it’s a tranquil setting to enjoy quality time with loved ones. In the heart of the property, couples will find an outdoor heated vitality pool to enjoy year-round regardless of the weather. Surrounding the pool are comfortable loungers, providing the ideal location to read a book and enjoy a bite from the spa deli. I loved the views of the rolling countryside from the Kelo sauna and the calming setting in the intimate relaxation lounge with comfy sofas and blankets to

snuggle up.

The indoor spa area was my favourite space, with a hydrotherapy pool plus two overhead water jets designed to massage the upper back and neck muscles, while helping to promote blood circulation. Some of my personal highlights included the steam room, the 10-meter pool, the foot baths, heated loungers and the experience shower.

I was lucky enough to experience an Indian-inspired head massage during my stay. The talented beauty therapist used the latest massaging techniques to help tackle the problem areas in my upper back, shoulders, neck, face and scalp. As someone who struggles with tension headaches, I didn’t realise how much I needed the treatment. For 25 minutes, my problems melted away while I focused on the relaxing music and the calming aromas.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

As a massive food lover, I couldn’t wait to enjoy a two-course meal at The Oak House Restaurant after hearing great things about the menu. Spoiler alert, I wasn’t disappointed! Using local produce and fresh seasonal ingredients, where possible, the talented chefs created a feast. For my starter, I went with the lemongrass chicken bao buns with apple and cucumber salad and a spiced honey dressing. I opted for the beerbattered haddock fillet for my main, with skin-on triple-cooked chips, homemade tartare sauce and pea puree – the flavours were exquisite.

Wrapped in my fluffy robe, I returned to the restaurant for breakfast the following morning – the perfect way to start the day. I enjoyed a continental breakfast followed by avocado on toasted sourdough and a poached egg before walking around the lake and relaxing in the hammocks. I was sad to be checking out of this wonderful resort and can’t wait to return soon.
